Indeed the names in stage select are early, They do show when going to the next stage. I checked both the USA and JP Ports (EU is the same as the USA port) and just saw basic stuff.
The final game definitely didn't let you increase or decrease your starting lives. (pretty sure that's what "player" meant in this version of the options screen)
Also, I found out that the last level, where Greedy is, has two areas, like any other stage. I don't know why they made it just the boss area in the final version.
