Great Video. I’m a combat Veteran who has PTSD and survivor’s guilt. Life can be challenging but everyone has their cross to bear. Thanks for bringing awareness to the issue of men’s mental health. We do the crappy jobs and we’ve been taught to suck it up and drive on. We need to get help when we need it and tough it out when we have to.

I love listening to your stories they're sad but very true . I know two great men who were in the dessert storm and came home with PTSD . My heart breaks for both of them cause they are the same age as my son and one talks about killing himself all the time . He has been in and out of the VA hospital . I tell him all the time that he could do so much for the youth if he told his story . So may I ask that you keep them in your prayers and I'll will pray that y'all's videos help others . And pray that I might say something to help someone . Thank you sir for your videos

In a very sincere calming way you told your audience to get back up and learn from their experiences and help others by telling their story. Thank you! I appreciate you.

Just found your videos and ran down the rabbit hole watching one after another of them. I'm knocking on the door of 70 and miss the outdoors, living with the land and letting mother nature supply your needs. I got thrown a curve ball and medically I can no longer enjoy the life style I miss. BUT...I can relive by watching your videos. Thank you for mentioning the mental health aspect of life that so many people ignore. In the nearly 70 years I have been above ground and sucking air I have found that no matter who you are, you are never so important that you can't at least say a kind word to everyone you meet and maybe offer a helping hand to those that are less fortunate than you. It may be just the help someone needs to turn their life around. Again Thank you
    Greg

Great comment Greg! It never hurts to say something kind to someone! But harsh words will always hurt! One thing I learned from Scouts, "Do a good turn every day!" For those that don’t know what that means, it’s quite simple. Do something or say something nice to someone every day. If you do that, you never know what that might mean to someone! You can literally save a life just by saying something nice to a person! Wish them well, compliment them in some way. For you Greg, I would just say that you are loved. You are important. To someone, you are a blessing! May the Lord bless and keep you all of your days! Have a wonderful day! - The ZippedUpKitz

Dave, somehow I had missed this video but it is da bomb! Took me back to some of my own camping trips but also I recalled being in the jungles of Nam in '69 but cooking "gourmet" meals concocted of a mix of C-rations. The unique aspect of that was not cooking with wood but using thumb size pieces of C-4 plastic explosive which burns very hot and is quite safe if you don't hit it with a hammer while it's burning. Now that was "da bomb"!
loved your stories about men's mental health. I am a retired psychologist and knew many clients who both got well or did not...the joy and the sorrow. One of my brothers-in-law was alcoholic and got drunk while burning a huge pile of brush on his rural property. He fell into the fire and suffered horrendous burns over 50% of his body. He was a very successful master electrician but is now disabled and living on SSDI. As you said, we all are messed up to varying degrees.
God bless you, Brooke, the kids and of course Maisey and Moose

Great video Dave!! Yesterday Christmas day my grandson had figured out what I had did for him for Christmas. He had called an wanted me to bring him a venison steak. Ok I took him one. So after we had opened presents. I had made a leather pouch an had a small fry pan in it. It was more or less a cook kit I put together for him. He disappeared outside. Comes back in the house an wants me to go with him. So I follow him outside. He has a small fire going in his dad's grill. An wants me to help him fry up that steak. Ya get this he is only 8. So I help him out with his meal he's making grandpa. He had a potato wrapped in foil on the edge of the fire. Just had to use his frying pan to cook us steak. Best Christmas ever. I had to save him from his my daughter. She wasn't too happy about him doing all this on his own. So I had to step in an save him. But he said it was my Christmas present so mom backed off an said he wouldn't do it again without someone knowing about it. But that was the best Christmas dinner I ever had. Guess my influence on him is paying off. Anyway Happy New year!! An God Bless!!!

Aubrey Maxam what a great story! I, myself have three boys, 15, 12 and 7, and love to get them outside to cook, camp, hike whatever, but that story melted my heart, eventho it was a lil dangerous for him to start a fire by himself but the willingness of him to want to cook you a meal outside is so fantastic! My dad passed away nearly 14 years ago and their dad isn’t interested in doing anything outside bc it’s either to cold or to hot...so it’s just me, which I wouldn’t trade our memories for nothing. Thanks for your story.
Dave, thank you as well friend for taking the time to make a great video on this subject. Happy New Years to you and Brooke! You guys rock! Take care my friend, Nikki.🥳

@@SouthernPatriot1 I'm not worried about him starting a fire. He's been doing it for a couple years now. When we do go camping or hiking. He let's it be known he's in charge of the camp fire an his older brother is the cook. They both been raised outside. I know for sure they could spend a night out in the woods with no problem. One is 9 the other is 10. See back when I was younger a boy 16 was out deer hunting. An he died from exposure. I made a vow right then none of my kids or grandkids were going out this way. I was raised in nature. Was taught if you killed it you ate it. An believe me my grandfather made sure of that. Still think that was my best Christmas present ever. God bless!

Hey Dave thanks for putting up this vid. It all started in the UK with a guy that has a bushcraft channel, I got tagged by a guy over there...then it pretty much went viral with some real big bushcraft/ outdoors channels.
I am particularly passionate about this because I was a mental health clinician and psychotherapist for over 20 years. I also helped to launch a Mens Health Week in the City of Kamloops, BC. That was an interesting exercise, we initially had 16 registrants and 14 were women!...it goes to show that men are not good at opening up about either mental health issues, or physical health issues. I believe it is partly as a result of how we have been socialized and brought up by our fathers. My dad was tough and never had a day off work in 20 years despite suffering some severe back pain as a result of his work in the ship-building industry, he died before his time as he had some major health issues he brushed off as trivial. I agree with what you say about first responders and military personnel being susceptible to trauma related mental disorders (including addictions), also, suicide. I had PTSD many years ago and I was lucky to get through it. But I would like to say that it is not just first responders and military personnel who suffer serious mental illness, mental illness is insidious and can come from a series of unrelenting 'life's knocks' unresolved, accumulating until they become overwhelming. it can also be hereditary in some cases, like BiPolar Disorder, one f the worst mental illnesses. It is great that you and many other men in the bushcraft/ outdoors community have stepped up to the plate, it is already giving some hope to men who are watching our channels and spreading out to the wider community. I hope you had a great Christmas and I send Best Wishes to you Brooke and your family for health, Happiness and Prosperity in 2019, WS.

Thanks for the tag, Dave! I hadn't been tagged until now. A few weeks back I was inspired to do one of these videos. It kind of turned out to be quite an ordeal! One Friday night I went out to do it, but the crappy cool, rainy, and windy weather (and it was dark) caused me to rethink things. I went out the next weekend armed with some better meat and shrimp and enjoyed much better conditions! It's nice to have been officially tagged! I've really liked these videos because everybody goes out and does something just a tad different and says something just a bit different. I've heard quite a lot of good things shared by folks over a fire/stove and a piece of tasty food.
Back in the 1990s I had for a while known of the term "woodcraft". I came across it in a lot of camping/outdoors books that I used to look trough. I had recently started to wonder how this "woodcraft" compared to "bushcraft". I looked things up last week and discovered that "woodcraft" is just the American term for what we now call "bushcraft". It seems that bushcraft is a term from Australia and also maybe Europe, and it showed up in North American with Mors Kockanski. But anyway, I cooked my food in a cast iron skillet over the same "Hunter-Trapper" fire lay that you used. It's one of those things that I first learned in one of those Camping and Woodcraft books way back when ;)

Good positive message Dave. I have 30 years now of clean and sober time. It took almost six years of prison to get me on the tracks of success but the mess continues. Addiction is a multifarious issue and just stopping the drugs and drink isn't really enough because it really doesn't deal with with underlying issue. In the end, rugged individualism won't work, it takes people holding me accountable for a good quality of life. I can say a lot more, but as I conduct my life I look for opportunities to share my stories, my hope and faith with all who will listen.

My favorite type of video to watch, nature, fire, meat, and stories... (Needs a baked tater, or ear of corn though.) I still live these adventures, however, at 77 they occur maybe 5 times a year or so rather than every couple of weeks, so Dave makes a great way to live it vicariously. It wouldn't work for back packing, but a small power station and fan save a lot of blowing and can keep a fire roaring. We still use a bellows with the fireplace at times, but they are becoming a relic of the past.

Hello Dave, thank you for sharing the information on men's mental health. This is truly a challenging topic. At times, all of us can use a helping hand from our friends or family. We cannot keep our problems bottled up inside. Conversely, we could be the one to lend a willing ear to a friend or family member. You handled this delicate topic quite. I am sorry that I missed your dinner invitation. A good craft beer would really hit the spot right now. Dave, I like your dog. She is a good camping and hiking companion. Take care out there, be safe and always have fun. 🤗

I'm watching this video after 4 years of upload but I completely agree with you. I'm in my early 20's and I kinda had a traumatic childhood, but I managed not to destroy my life up. Going to the GYM and riding my motorcycle gives me joy and it feels blessed to have whatever I've less or more we got. May God bless every soul who's going through a tough phase of their life.

Well, I subscribed a few months ago, watched most of your videos and would really like it if you keep this up. Winters are long in Northern Michigan and your videos make quarantine, a few beers and my old corncob pipe with a load of half & half a good experience. The ambient pan fry sound for 24 hours was a nice touch made me want to head to the Hemlocks & touch off a fire. Our hillside is north facing and there is wet ground down low, so we have LOTS of Hemlocks that are great winter cover for the songbirds and summer cover for the hummingbirds. Keep having fun with Daisy and make more videos.

I've seen a few of these videos, and depression and anxiety never really affected me too much. However, as I'm watching this I'm experiencing some depression/anxiety for literally no reason, and I was super confused and was just gonna let it pass, but after beginning this video I decided to tell my parents about this random moment of anxiety, and I think it was a good idea to just let them know that I was feeling this stress just for this time, because I knew they could help me feel calm again.
Thanks Dave! Hope you had a good Christmas.
