  • The greatest problem of the modern education system is that it doesn't focus on systematically preparing students for many aspects of the real challenge out there: Life itself.

As someone in the late stages of the formal education system, it seems downright bizarre that people could ever stop, or rather, deprioritise learning to such a degree that they're effectively stagnant.
Of course, people learn passively of current events: of who's performing well in the sports league, who said what, what the price of a box of teabags are, but we separate that learning from education: of actively pursuing a skill, of trying to find out more about a topic, of enhancing one's knowledge of the world.
I don't think I could ever stop learning. 'Life' may pose an obstacle to greater and lesser degrees as time goes on, but the impulse to learn is surely too great.

I couldn't disagree more. The goal of education should NOT be about creating workers or psychoanalyzing students desires and relationships! The goal of education is to foster intellectual curiosity that in turn results in a student loving to learn for the rest of their lives. Properly delivered education is akin to "laying out a string" by the teacher where through questioning and guidance the students follow the "string" while drawing their own conclusions becoming free thinkers and problem solvers capable of discerning, through group/democratic debate, between rational and irrational explanations. Students should NOT memorize math but instead be challenged to discover and understand the underlying principles, thus able to solve any problem presented. Each students should be free to pursue, and be encouraged to pursue, subjects and problems that interest them rather than objective based learning where the learning goals are chiseled in stone through a curriculum created by administrators and politicians. A class should NOT be about what is covered in a course, but instead what is discovered in a course. Teachers should NOT be the sage on the stage, but instead the guide on the side.

I feel when children are going to school, they start to loose their curiosity of the World because all of it is explained by teachers who say that it is the truth without letting the child learn how to reason it out on their own.
Funny thing is, in my classes, the teachers tend to encourage us to ask but when we ask they say it is dumb or irrelevant. When we try to say that they may be wrong, they say that it's in the textbook or they know better than we do, which leads us to become scared to ask or wonder. We loose our sense of wonder through the education we have currently.

I am a teacher. I love my job and I need to tell you this is happening in schools. It is pushed for students to learn and understand life problems. We call it the "hidden curriculum". It is what teachers facilitate in their classrooms. Teachers put students in many situations and help guide them in appropriate ways. Or guidance about finding themselves and their interests. Or understanding money (which is definitely in the curriculum). You are correct it is NOT as blatant as this example and I wish it were more but your next video I would love to see your solution to this problem. The education system knows this is where we want to go. They just don't know how.

+Besart Copa: Firstly like I said earlier the things this video is talking about and what you are speaking about is exactly what the education system is moving towards. We want kids to become active thinkers in situations. Like I said in my school in Canada we are doing this. We facilitate these situations in our hidden curriculum. You are right socioeconomics still plays a huge role. The idea of individualism is good and bad. Gives kids the power to strive for what they want, uniqueness but it also gives this idea that parents think their child is so special that they shouldn't fail and/or don't do wrong. Failing is really important... It is how we learn.
Maybe I should have phrased it differently. They don't know how to make the change quickly. Like any change it is slow and progressive. What education is and where they want to go is a HUGE change. So yes it is 2016 and you seem to think that we should be farther than where we are but like any change that takes time. Part of the problem things aren't changing quicker is because of Universities. Elementary to Highschool has figured it out but Universities still like their fancy degrees and money. They need to make a change as well but they aren't and show no signs that they want to. Our system as of now is satisfying what universities want while still trying to make change to educate children how they should. It is a difficult task.

I honestly think the school I went to was one of, if not, the best school in the world. All my classmates, the quiet shy ones or the loud social butterflies, were bright, open minded, and questioned everything they were told.
We were all different by culture and ethnicity, we came from different backgrounds, some were rich, some were poor, but we were all united under the same uniform, the same tables, the same chairs, the same classroom, the same books, the same teacher, and the same language.
We ALL loved going to school and always looked forward to classes. We would often disrupt the lesson because we liked to discuss politics and real life issues with the teacher, sometimes even their or our personal lives, we were all open to each other, like a family. We called each other by first name, we even go out with the teachers.
When graduation day arrived.. everyone was sad. We were finally adults who will now go to university and move on with our lives, we should be happy, right? Nope, we were not happy.
The solution is simple. Reduce the number of students in a class. Reduce the number of students in the whole school. 1 teacher to 10 student is the magic number, in my opinion, thats how my class was, 10 students and 1 teacher, 11 family members.

I agree with a single exception.
I very much think that a modest introduction to deeper, more conceptual mathematics is a very good thing.
The trouble with defending this is that it's very hard to point directly to immediate, directly practical applications for the literal material you are learning.
But that doesn't mean it's not important.
It teaches about a way of thinking conceptually and abstractly.
And makes people aware, at a very young age, of this style of analytical, logically rigorous investigation.
It's fundamental to the vital task of introducing the idea of intellectualism to people at a young age.

Instead of training students for the analytical, logically rigorous investigation you talk about, what is trained is just formula retention and the ability to apply these to nearly identical problems which require little more than some ability to interpret text.
A reform in math education is needed as well.

"Mathematics is the language with which God has written the universe"
he really had a point! ( Except the God thing may be.)
To answer your question, I thought I could recommend you a very
interesting conversation between Krista Tippett and Mario Livio. When you have some extra time , just google both names and you'll find a podcast. Mario Livio is a wonderful astrophysicist, he works at the institute that operates Hubble Space Telescope. He is also the writer of the book " Is God a Mathematician".
I am sure you'll enjoy that conversation and find some answers to your
question. Here I copied a part of the introduction of the book too:
"Physicist and author Mario Livio brilliantly explores mathematical ideas
from Pythagoras to the present day as he shows us how intriguing
questions and ingenious answers have led to ever deeper insights into
our world. This fascinating book will interest anyone curious about the

Training teaches you how to do something; education teaches you how to think. Both are worthy and noble, and nearly everyone will need some of both in their life.

School isn't supposed to be a place where people are given information; you're thinking of a library. A school is supposed to guide the learning process, teach people how to find and assimilate information for themselves, and direct them towards appropriate starting points (e.g. learning basic math or writing is a stepping stone to other more complex disciplines). The standard curriculum is not the problem. The fact that we have a standard curriculum is the problem.

    @brindlebriar Před 8 lety +47

I agree with the superlative importance of the proposed subjects of curriculum.
However, I would add two perspectives on 'What Is Education For?'
In the broad, philosophical sense, it is to increase human knowledge by sparing subsequent generations the burden of having to re-discover the discoveries of previous generations, since they can be learned faster than they can be re-discovered. This allows more time for further discovery. It is worth noting that we have long since reached quantities of global knowledge such that no person could ever hope to learn all of it even with thousands of lifetimes. So progress can only be made by specialists in their fields with little knowledge of what is happening in other fields. At present the various fields are still able to communicate with each other, but for how much longer? Computers help a lot with this, but how we deal with the difference between the static capacity of the human brain relative to the exponentially increasing quantity of knowledge remains to be seen. One can imagine capacity thresholds being reached and current upward trends plateauing. But perhaps artificial intelligence or quantum computing can extend the progression. In that case, one can imagine a world of dense technology all self-replicating with self-generating algorithms in which no human understands how any of it works.
The other, more cynical perspective I would share on 'What Is Education For?' is that, at least since the discovery of agriculture with allowed humans to produce surplus, humans have been looking for and finding ways to overtly or subtly 'enslave' each other in order to lay claim to that surplus, known in modern times as 'wealth.' The modern system, vastly more advanced and complex than previous models relies heavily on propaganda, control of information, to maintain an obedient and cooperative labor-farmed population, and the 'education' system is a primary means for dissemination of that propaganda.
So ask yourself, why does the state NOT already teach financial education about how capitalism works, about morality, relationships, etc.? You can suppose that of all the people whose job it is to think about what subjects to choose for educational curriculum, the relative importance of such subjects has never occurred to any of them, and that of the 7 billion odd people in the world, nobody has suggested any of them either. Or we can suppose that they have considered and rejected those subjects. If so, why? Well, there is very good reason to suppose that very powerful people believe - because it is true - that a financially and emotionally well educated, informed, and cooperative populace would not be in the best interests of the state. Perhaps they know that slaves work most diligently when they think they have been duped into thinking that they are free and in charge, and that too much education on certain subjects can get in the way of that delicate 'educational' process.

Jack G Freedom is relative. There are things that you are not allowed to do. There are also things that you are allowed to do. So you have some freedom, but you lack some freedom. Ultimate freedom would require omnipotence, as the laws of nature prevent us from doing many things. But we commonly use freedom, in the more limited political sense, to refer to freedom from the control of other humans. In America, for example, where I live, we are allowed many more freedoms by the people who control us, than are allowed to many citizens of other countries, and for that we are grateful. One can say we are 'more free.' But ultimately, even in the limited political sense, if someone else decides what it is that you may and may not do, even if they are quite lenient about it, you are not 'free.' You are under their control. They are your masters. And it would not be such a stretch to say that you are their slave. They may use you hard, or they may use you lightly, but it is up to them, not up to you. Ultimately, if your 'freedom' is afforded to you or allowed to you by people with power over you, it is not freedom.
You see, Freedom, is not a measure of how hard you have to work or how well you are treated. Freedom is a measure of power - the power to choose.
So, to answer your question directly, the "main stream sense of freedom," to use your words, is a sense of being allowed relatively more privileges than others are allowed. Like a house slave, relative to a field slave. They were allowed more 'freedoms.' But they were no more free.
I know that they tell us we are sort of 'collectively in charge' via the voting system, which would make us individuals enslaved to the collective, more or less the way we think of Communist China. But that is not accurate. However, that's a huge subject for another time.
At this point, you may throw up your hands, call me an idiot, and declare that by my reckoning, we're all slaves no matter what, so the word becomes meaningless and useless. However, the point of this way of thinking is to allow us to discern and parse the nature of power and freedom, where it lies and in what quantity, and by what mechanism. That's the point, and perhaps ironically, such an understanding gives one a small measure of additional freedom, because understanding, as they say, is power.

I personally believe children and students should be taught to think for themselves. They should learn to debate, solve problems and be encouraged to develop themselves. Learning them "capitalism" or "the meaning of life" (or any subject focussed on accumulation of knowledge) would only result in a loss of interest. It would result in a bunch of knowledge and rules and books while students should be encouraged to define their own meaning of life. And above all, should not be forced to do it. Forcing them a certain curriculum will result in what currently exists in the current school systems; a deeply unmotivated attitude towards self-employment and the accumulation of knowledge.

+TempoTap I agree with you - we can't have a school system which only focus on a special way of living. We need language, science, art, social studies etc. in our education - and not only "how-to-live-an-american-life 101". In Denmark, were I come from, we use a lot of time on being educated to think for ourselves + all the other things needed for university (I'm in the Danish edition of High School).

    • @brindlebriar
      @brindlebriar Před 8 lety

+TempoTap Meh, I used to think that. But it's too late for that. There's too much knowledge; it's been growing exponentially. Nobody can acquire it or think it through anymore. Just little pieces of it. Tiny fragments of a vast ungraspable web. Self-generating computers are going to have to do the thinking for us so we can play sex and violence per our nature across the pristine brothel battle grounds of Eden. We just have to push another generation or two of brain-laborers to get the machines going.
Also, thinking for themselves is what people do without any education. Education has always been for preventing people from thinking for themselves, thereby preventing them from coming to the wrong conclusions, like that they are slaves. But it doesn't matter. Perhaps it was for the best.

I can relate to this so heavily; here I am finishing high school in a couple of months and I am absolutely clueless about what I want to do. Even though I always had a soft spot for language, literature, history and philosophy; they are regarded by everyone as "useless" and said to bring you to a sad, miserable life filled with lack of money and guaranteed unemployment. Also it's not uncommon for people to call you a nutjob for liking such fields. Therefore I kind of treated them with modesty.
Quite discouraging. Everything else I never really enjoyed too much, math and the digital language would have been cool to learn but I chose the wrong school for that (kind of too late to start that from scratch now), it's a sport themed school, my passion for the sport has all but burned out by now, however.
So, instead of really thinking more deeply on this I always just ignored this issue by using the internet and playing video games, being focused on forum communities or youtube channels. While it definitely improved my english by ALOT and I learned things here and there, I've missed out on alot of time I could have spent reading more often (rather than scarcely like I usually did, even though I always liked it).
I'm inclining to go study History in the future, however, there's no passion in this decision, no certainty, no ambition, I like history, but I'm not quite sure what to make out of it and it's just the most convenient decision I can take. There's one thing school definitely should teach more and that's like you said, Capitalism. We all need to manage our finances and understand the economy edventually, it's better to not have to learn from mistakes and be easy naive targets at the start.
Well, all that is left now is to read and study more seriously on what I like the most, trying to tone down my virtual activity in the meanwhile. Your channel had its part in making me take this decision. Your videos are simply fascinating and leave me desiring for more, to "satiate my thirst" for knowledge (Francois Rabelais, wasn't it?)
The more I read, the more I realize how little I know, but it still feels so satisfying! I don't care if the public opinion thinks I am a weirdo for doing this, it's what I like and I'll try to succeed with it, somehow.

K0ragg all the in demand jobs are not ever mentioned or taught in high school. It is a crime against the poor in my opinion, as people leave high school and feel obligated to go to college because of "no opportunities" What is taught in high school is all the saturated low demand stuff like English, history, arts, sports, and people jam into college like sardines learning all about stuff that is not very marketable. This is by design, there is massive opportunity with no college. 75% of jobs require grade 12 that's it. 40% of jobs require grade 10.
If you are in good physical shape look into trades. If you live in a de-industrialized blighted shit hole city move to an industrious place and get your foot in the door. Yes, you will make low-ish pay for a while but have no student loans and be making money from day 1. Once a person gets to a certain point of expertise in a trade or skill, you are gold plated for life and never need to worry about finding work again. A person with great mechanical ability that gets into the more technical stuff like robotics or heavy duty mechanics, or electronics, or aeronautics, or locomotives, expect to be earning $200k a year later in life. No student loans, no debt, earning money from day 1, and no school councillor will ever mention this to anyone.
keep in mind the key here is WHERE you are living because none of this kind of work is available in the blighted welfare cities like Detroit, st. Louis, boston, cleavland, LA, ect. You have to go to where the industry is, which is pretty much the central strip of the US and western Canada. They do not build cars in Detroit any more, they do not build trains in LA, they do not build Saturn 5 rockets in st. Louis, if you get what I mean.

K0ragg I think he refers to 'a mechanic', not 'an engineer'. And that is, if you are able to grasp the 'more technical stuff'. He doesn't even mention that you're going to design (what engineers are supposed to do) these complex systems; probably just operating or fixing them, just like a normal mechanic, but with more expertise - they could still pay a lot.
I too, have a soft spot for art, especially painting, but my father didn't allow me to take Art (he thought it didn't pay well) and I took Biology instead in college and graduated just fine... and now I'm going to study molecular medicine for my Master's. I guess I just make a compromise out of things... and I found that once in a while, my skills with painting and drawing are critical even in Biology. I once made a comic strip about modes of reproduction, sketch wildlife for inventorisation, even made posters for events, little dioramas for an exhibition, and asked to teach sketching for a couple of people.
Contrary to an able-bodied mechanic, I'm more of a brooding, cogitating thinker in the dark corner of the library, so I don't really care about 'marketable stuff'and those sort of things, but I could say that instead of too much thinking on the subject itself, you should think about forming connections with people on college; they are to some degree a more important factor in getting a job than your actual degree. I got some research job from my former mentor in college, so there you go! If you could combine it with your interests, it could be a powerful combination...I could only say that crap though, but I wish you good luck with your studies!

Am sure if most of us looked at our education systems, we will discover that there have been minimal changes over decades. Teachers operate under government education policies, among other aspects, that structure and sometimes limits their performance. That is why I believe that "these kinds of teachers" are there or can be found but the issue lies in the changes that the education systems would have to make, depending on the countries that may adapt the curriculum and their political and social structures.

Greetings everyone. I agree that a better curriculum has great merits, but this assumes that most people are actually learning in school. Most kids have no learning habit at all, and are covertly blowing off their whole education with a long stream of passing grades. This is done for practical reasons, since most kids don't give a hoot about learning, and the teacher needs to "pass" these cognitively indigestible kids through the system. You can't force someone to learn if they have no desire to do so. A passing grade really means that the kid didn't learn much of anything. Kids that aren't learning are copying instead, leading to a degraded automaton-style mind of knowledge-free people. Copying and learning are two very different things. Things like the ideologies exist because kids use them as copycat clubs, to get all the "answers" (just like a kid copying his test "answers"). This is why we have such a huge population of mediocre people (all copycatting for life). This is also why we create two separate work hierarchies, like doctor/nurses, engineer/technicians, or officer/enlisted, etc. Without a learning habit there is no knowledge, and no knowledge means no judgement (childlike/apelike judgement for life), no creativity, and no purpose. This is a global problem, not just a single country. It's not that people have a tough time with a single topic, like math - mediocre people don't know the first thing about any topic at all.
Most mediocre people hate books (and anything like an essay style answer), because they don't understand them at all. If they are forced to go to college (typically ordered by parents), as soon as they get a book in school, it is kept as fresh and unread as possible in their bookshelves, so that eventually they can sell it back to the bookstore (its only value to them). If they must open one, they try to read the completely baffling text (which sounds to them like Charley Browns adult speak), and then mark "the answers" with highlighters (most of the text, since they have no idea what any of this means). Then on the test they try to regurgitate these copied "answers" (not understanding a single one). For this nothing of a learning experience, they get a "passing" grade (meaning no knowledge detected). At the end of schooling the few books that weren't sold are tossed, and the person never tries to read anything of significance again (but sometimes just faking their way through some manuals or "bestsellers" that are actually written for kids). What most mediocre people discover in college is that they have no interests at all (beyond eating and mating), because they never knew anything at all. They are just copying their parents desires for them (or equivalently taking orders from their parents). Typically, the next career step here is to fake being a professional, using a useless education of trivia as a foundation. It may seem strange at first, but many professionals of all types, don't know the first thing about any grade school topics, their major in college, or have any "area of interest" at all. Just a childlike mind of copied ideas, and a fancy title to make them feel good about their profound ignorance (a bit like Peter Keating in The Fountainhead, the king of mediocrity).
What you actually get from learning and education (for real) is a significantly boosted intelligence. Your learning habit goes for a lifetime, ramping up your intelligence (in your particular knowledge mix) the whole time.

i totally agree with this video that we need a new curriculum to prepare our children for the future. The content of the past is the fundamental knowledge we need to reflect how we can use to teach our children to prepare for the future. Besides these two areas of learning, we need the thinking, writing and anlaytical skills to make our children more reflective to uphold a civic society.

I liked that the narrator made education his main priority.

Totally agree. I would like to add an important thing to the curriculum. Namely that of humans' relationship with nature, and giving a more global outlook.
Another consideration of mine would be to include philosophy into the curriculum, either topic-based or as a subject in its own right.
Generally, I am also in big favor of topic-based learning, rather than subject-based. A lot of understanding of how the world is connected is being lost in our current school system.

Learning should instead become as self-regulated as possible, meaning that students would choose projects to work on for as long as they need to, using tools from whatever fields are suited to their tasks rather than study isolated bits and pieces of subjects.

I spent my entire teen years and beyond feeling depressed and lost which could have been helped with a decent curriculum and kind guidance that was terribly lacking in my school. The main problem seemed to be the inability to treat the students as individuals

I recognise that there is often a lack of connection between oneself and one's inner self, or however it is you want to describe it, but I really doubt that this can be solved through schooling. I don't think it is possible to teach the faculty of self-discovery. In order for us to be aware of who we are we need diversity in our experiences and independence - education in the form you are proposing doesn't seem to provide that. As a secondary school student I know that most of my development has occurred independently, and could not have been taught to me by any means.

School of Life: I love your videos, but I think you've missed the mark on this one. The problem with modern education is that it puts too much emphasis on definitive answers and not enough emphasis on abstract thought. In school, we are graded on being able to provide the one answer that the teacher is looking for. In subjects like math, this makes sense: one plus one will always equal two. But in other subjects, like English, this is just ridiculous. Language is flexible and always open to interpretation, as anyone who has ever published anything and had their message misunderstood will tell you. English is a perfect example of a class that should be graded on the reasoning and interpretive skills of the students rather then forcing them to produce an expected answer on demand.
If we used classes like English and the arts to teach reasoning skills and math and sciences to teach memorization skills, people would leave school with both reasoning skills and memorization skills. Right now, students leave school with nothing more than the ability to regurgitate phrases and ideas on demand without any sign that they actually understand them.

Subjects like physics requires learners to have strong intuition and visualization. Contrary to what u have written, memorization works for subjects like history which is an arts subject, there's not much scope for creativity there.

school should teach us to understand our qualities and allocate them to a suitable career path that we would find meaningful so we don't end up miserable wasting our life on a job we hate. give us more opportunities to experience different work so we can come to grips to what we actually want to do. school is fake as it never really teaches you what you need to know. • @bryanwong6126
    @bryanwong6126 Před 9 lety +3

Good points but I must disagree with this video. The bigger problem here is not about what teachers in schools are teaching, but more about how they are teaching it to the students.
The way our education is being categorized into subjects make it difficult for us to find what's the real purpose of learning. And its more pointless when we are thought to study and achieve for the results that do not even reflect on who we are.
Some had already given up, failing a subject means nothing anymore because they are too far fetched, pointless. But why are some of us still busting our asses to even try when it's not what we want? Simply, because results are just qualifications to get into a good university, where we are not sure what we truly want to learn. And also to get a good job in this society, still, maybe not clueless, maybe we had found our career, but maybe it's too abstract for this society to handle...
Teaching SUBJECTS make ideas we learn so one-way-ed and dull. Like how only in Maths we think of numbers, and only in geography we talk of mountains, only in art we appreciate things, ONLY in a certain subject/class, only that certain specific thing. We only tend to think that way when we like that subject. Other subjects are just a waste of time. Imagine the things we could've learned during that time.
The solution? Well the best one I could think of is where we teach TOPICS instead. A topic not restricted to any one-way-ed kind of mono-mentality. So each of us can have different views and opinions on topics, views where some see in an artistic way and where some see it in a scientific manner. So that we can share our ideas amongst one another. Classes will no longer be boring, everyone will participate, there won't be such things as "I've already learn that." Or "that's too hard to understand." . Classes will engage in activities where one will inspire someone else to think in a different way.
We slowly start to open our minds to others and to stand up for our own ideas, that, I think is the true purpose of learning.
