  • One of my favorite trumpet players to listen to and try to emulate is the great Uan Rasey. Never heard of him? He's probably best known for the amazing opening trumpet solo on Jerry Goldsmith's soundtrack to 'Chinatown'. Check it out here: • Jerry Goldsmith ~ Chin...
It literally makes tear up every time I hear that. Such soul in his playing. Uan was one of the LA studio trumpet masters, including the gig as principal trumpet of the great (and huge!) MGM Orchestra for many years starting in the 1930's through the mid/late 50's. He had a HUGE, gorgeous sound, but also was a stylistic master. His sultry, beautiful vibrato and overall style of playing has had a big influence on my own trumpet playing.

My brother took lessons from Uan as a kid and I came to his lessons with my dad just hear his sound. You mentioned tearing up when you hear him play. When I was 12 I would be sitting in his living room eating caramel candy that his wife gave me as I would melt in my seat and listen to him play the trumpet. His sound would make me tear up it was so beautiful as well. Such a great memory and not many other times that has happened to me while listening to music. Only other time I can remember that happening was seeing one of my grandfathers students play the trombone, Andy Martin...

I took a dozen lessons with Uan. A remarkably kind and positive

Got to take 2 lessons from Mr Rasey. He was very friendly and helpful, Find the soul of every note he used to say. He played the China town solo on a King silver Flair. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Thank you so much for sharing that, Gregory. It means a lot to me to hear people's stories about Uan. I would have loved to have taken a lesson with him! I didn't know what equipment he used on Chinatown-so thanks for sharing the info! I adore that solo. One of my favorite movie soundtrack moments

Mr Tichenor - I couldn't agree more re your comment on Mr Rasey's Chinatown solo . I first heard this amazing solo at age 17 , in 1974 at a small cinema in Tiburon ( San Francisco bay - area) . Well , suffice to say I was thrilled - deeply moved by the gorgeous lyrical and sensitively nuanced solo so flawlessly played - wow !! I , at that time , was a serious musician playing French Horn . My active envolvement was classical orchestral and chamber ..
yet , puting it simply ; as a musician , I listen and feel music and musicians playing very deeply - hearing this solo now , 50 years later - I'm still deeply moved by Uan's playing - it brings me to tears every time - thanks for your sharing this remarkable musicians legacy - cheers !!😉

I enjoyed your playing emensely! Love that old style playing. I have a vintage King trumpet from the the late twenties early thirties. It was my trumpeter Father in law's trumpet he cherished.. He played big band music, including a brass band that played on one of the luxury liners that traveled to Europe from the US in the late thirties. I play trumpet as well and we LOVED playing music together into the wee hours of the morning.. This King trumpet is gorgeous and with Art Deco designs and etching. It is gorgeous silver and gold bell. The sound is incredible. It has been called the best trumpet made in that era. I'm blessed to have this gem and play it with reverance and rememberance to my Father in law and his talent and the joy we shared. It is in perfect mint condition; not a tiny dent to be seen. He left it to me along with six other horns. Some real gems. One a french made lafayette 105 Bb/C trumpet by couesnon paris vintage, silver. I see trumpets of this in poor condition going for thousands on line. Also, a vintage slide trumpet which I have yet to learn to play. Your playing took me back to the great trumpet scores in old movies I love. I love and jazzy sound. Check out some of the crazy jazz trumpet pieces played on very early Laurel and Hardy films. Some are amazing! Just watching you I have learned a lot on how to get the jazzy slur from one note to the other. I LOVE your playing; you are very skilled. Not quite sure why I shared all that I did; I guess I thought you being a trumpet lover would appreciate the joy I have playing these jem trumpets.Their sound is so superior to manyof the newer trumpets today. I now own nine beautiful horns; only two are not vintage. I've subscribed and looking forward to listening to more great playing!

Hey thanks so much for sharing all of that! My apologies for not responding much sooner. I love that you have these vintage horns and that they're being used! Too many great old trumpets just sitting in closets somewhere. Thanks for the kind words by the way. I love the playing on old movie soundtracks, including obviously Ian's wonderful playing. Thanks for checking out my channel and I promise I'll be posting more frequently!

@@AndyTichenor Thank you so much and really forward to new videos!! Someday I may send you some photos of these gem trumpets. Can you play a slide trumpet? I'm just recovering from emergency eye surgery for detached retina! Praise God all is healing well, (only been just after three weeks and eyesight has come back in this last week. Docs tell me I can't play my trumpets for at east three full months, maybe longer. )-; They had a laugh that I was concerned and wanting to know when I could play again. Out of thousands of patients, I'm their first one, that they know of, that plays trumpet. Also, strangly enough, because my hubby and I are musicians, years ago people always assumed I was the one that played violin and he played trumpet. So many don't think of women being trumpet players. So odd! Yet there are great women trumpeters. Take care and God bless you!

My teacher was one of Uan’s early students back in the 80s and they later became close friends. Needless to say, I always hear at least one Uan story every few weeks. His virbrato is easily identified in solo playing, though it is of the era he came up in. One thing most people get wrong (or rather it’s a misconception) about his equipment is his mouthpiece. He’s most often cited as using a Bach 1A. This couldn’t be further from what he used. When he came to LA he was using a 10.5C. Before he was hired by MGM, he split his lip has made a switch to “the biggest one I could find.” This ended being a custom Olds mouthpiece that had a close to 3 rim size with a deep cup. To Uan, big wasn’t in the rim.

Great playing Andy as usual.. was watching a video the other day where it was said that Pete Candoli told Malcolm McNab and Arturo Sandoval that Uan played lead on most of Tuttis Trumpets and not Gozzo who many people believe did.

Here is what my ears heard: WONDERFUL music, sir. Your interpretation of “American in Paris” was absolutely right on the money. That trumpet lick also appears on many symphonic orchestral trumpet auditions. You may not realize it, but you just helped those having to play it! Great rendition, Andy! As you demonstrated, a piece of sheet music contains written notes. The trick is to play music with them, not just play the notes. 🎼🎶🎺

The original movie soundtrack to Singin' in the Rain, as well as the movie soundtrack to American in Paris are both available and Uan sounds spectacular on both. Also basically ANY old MGM musical will have him on the soundtrack!

I just found out who the trumpet player was for the episode A Passage For Trumpet from the Twilight Zone and it was none other than Uan Rasey, I can without a doubt say that the way this man plays the trumpet is by far the best I've ever heard in my entire life just absolutely beautiful I hope you enjoy this portion of him playing.

I love your playing you have such an amazing rich sound. How did you find your embouchure I'm struggling between finding a fit with a nice rich lower register but also keeping my range?

    • @AndyTichenor
      @AndyTichenor  Před 6 lety +5

Thanks for the compliments! I've had this same embouchure since I was a teenager. It's just always felt right to set the mouthpiece very high up and keeping the horn pointed straight out. This helps me a lot to use my jaw as a strong support and not dig in too hard on my top lip. There's lots of factors of course involved with finding a set that works for you though. All of us have different shaped chops! As long as you're not grinding the mp really hard into your lips that will help you overall with more resonance and fullness of sound as well as increase your endurance. Increasing mp pressure on your chops to play higher ultimately has the opposite effect. Anyway-just some general things that I think help a bit. I'm glad you liked this latest video-thanks for checking it out!

So I played the trumpet for years, and now I have been asked to do something crazy. I know I could have handled it in my youth but I'm not sure how to work up to where I need to be. I just found you on CZcams and ordered your book. What would you recommend for building ones range back up?

Another very nice prominence so low Uan has is Two for the Seesaw with Shirley MacLaine
