- In this demonstration, Peter Woolley will show how the technique of 'Stopping Out' can be used to create a complex cloudscape.
With care and practice, it's possible to vary the intensity of the area you lift out and create subtle graduations. In this way, it's possible to to blend it into the surrounding wash so that you can't see the join.

You're very welcome Bob - thank you for the lovely comment.
This technique tutorial is most helpful.
You're a rockstar!!!! What a help this was. Man!! Because of you, I just painted my first AWESOME cloud scene. thanks!!
Oooh! Well done Janet! I'm pleased this was helpful for you
Yesss! I just watched probably 15 different cloud videos, and this is by far my favorite. I'm so excited to try it, I can't contain myself. Thank you Peter! I'll graduate to the none stopping out technique after I master this 😀
Thanks R&P - I'm pleased this one ticked all the necessary boxes!
I particularly like the bold use of darker grays here . We all know once watercolors dry they seem lighter than when first put down . The final effect of multiple layering is wonderful as it gives us the whole tonal range . Bravo
Wow beautiful clouds .Will try .Never imagined it can look so beautiful with this techniques.
Thank you for the video ❤
You are such an incredible artist and a special person. I love to watch your movies and listen to your stories and instructions. Every day you give my depressed head a spark of light. Thank you very much.

One of the best tutorials on lifting clouds that I've seen, thanks peter.😀
Beautiful! Excited to try you technique! Thank you for sharing your gift!
i just stumbled on this and thought, I've got to try it. I've been practicing clouds all day and this was my favorite result. A huge thank you - I am now a fan!

You're very welcome Sybilla - thank you for the lovely comment - I'm pleased you enjoyed it!
That's pure poetry. Thanks so much for sharing 😀
Love this demonstration, it really shows how much depth and subtle contrast can be achieved with a more skilled approach to "lifting out clouds". This technique here enables a far more interesting skyscape painting. Thank you.
Best cloud tutorial I have seen. It helped me a lot with lifting clouds. Thanks!
That was just what I needed ....thank you for making my Sauble Beach scene much better! Lovely technique and instruction!
I just saw this now in 2021 and am impressed with your technique and instructions, a born teacher.
I can't believe this dates back 4 years ago - how time flies! Thank you for your lovely comments Karin - I'm pleased you enjoyed it.
What a wonderful demonstration and explanation. Thank you very much!
I absolutely LOVE this video. It was exactly what I needed.
Thank you Peter ☁️... I believe this is the most effective way to produce a realistic cloud base for any watercolour painting I have ever seen. There are some armature painters on YT whom degrade those of us whom like to use tissues to lift out ( stop out) !
I love the end result, beautiful. 👏🏻
This is exactly what I was looking for in order to paint realistic looking clouds just as I see them out in nature. Thank you.
Thank you so much Peter. I had no idea how to even start! So enjoying clouds now. Wow! If we don’t succeed, it will have nothing to do with anything lacking in the tutorial. It’s brilliant! Thanks heaps!
Thank you Peter, very grateful to you for the lesson!
Tremendously inspiring. Thank you Peter!
Thanks Phil - I'm pleased you enjoyed it!
Thank you. You allowed me to understand where exactly my mistakes were. I was finally able to realize a beautiful sky. It gave me back confidence. ..... You are the best!
That's great, Sonia... I'm really pleased it was helpful to you! It's a big moment when a sky turns out right... Nice one!
Loved this demo. I learned some new techniques I'm anxious to try I'm an experienced painter but this old dog is always learning. Thanx. Jewel in San Diego CA
Absolutely beautiful, love this means for making beautiful clouds. Thank you. Can’t wait to watch more.

Beautiful! Can't wait to try this out on my beautiful Arizona skies!
Thanks Peter, I am off to have a go, might need to practice that on quite a few sheets, but what a great technique, such a beautiful complex sky . thank you . Cheers, Lorraine

Beautiful technique! It's repetitive that it becomes second nature. I feel that you won't go wrong as you keep on building and elaborating on the clouds. This may be the answer to my frustration. Thank you for sharing your gift!
Beautiful clouds will have a try at this😊👍
Thank you so much for this wonderful video!! These are some really beautiful and realistic clouds!! All of the tips and colors are very helpful, along with the technique. Very helpful!! Thanks again.
Thanks Belinda - I'm pleased you enjoyed the demonstration.
Wonderful and very satisfying to watch :) I could watch you painting for hours...
Thanks Marcotronic - I'm pleased you enjoyed it!
Great job!!! Very clear, you teach so well
Beautiful clouds. Thanks for the useful information. Not only does it inspire, it gives one courage.
Fantastic tutorial, Peter. Thank you. My clouds look as though they've been lifted out with kitchen paper. :) Shall try them again using your techniques and layering patiently. So good to see up close how you softened the edges.
By far the best watercolour cloud tutorial I’ve seen
Thanks Wakabaloola - I'm pleased you enjoyed it!
I've found this way the best clouds and sky painting! thank you, Peter!
It's a challenging technique, but if you've found it works well for you, that's excellent - thanks for the comment, Daniel

Thanks Siddharth - I'm pleased you enjoyed it. Thank you for lovely comment!
I don’t know why you don’t necessarily “like” the “lift-out” technique Peter, because you’ve mastered it, and those are some of the most beautiful watercolor clouds that I’ve seen! 👍🏽
Thanks Ambrose - I still have reservations, but I think I'm warming to it (and I'm using the lift-out technque in other places too)
@@peterwoolleyartist I think clouds are made for watercolor, and in my humble opinion, the “lift-out” technique that you use should not only be utilized without reservation; you’ve proven to me that it is a “must-have,” invaluable “tool” to have in our artistic-toolbox! THANKS! Subscribed!
thank you very much for this lesson. I am lucky, as a beginner to have found your tutorial!! teaching is giving , and you gave me a lot. thank you again!!
You're very welcome - thank you for the lovely comment - I'm pleased you enjoyed the demonstration!
Absolutely stunning! Your end result looks as real as the inspiration photograph!
Thanks Lynn - Mission Accomplished - I'm pleased you enjoyed it!

That was amazing thankyou so much for this I will have a go at it, I'm sure I will need to practice several times to get it right
Thank you so very much for this video. I struggle with clouds (beginner painter). Just happened upon your video. Your clouds are the very best, most realistic clouds and sky that I have ever seen. I hope to practice and improve.
beautiful! Im a new artist and i learned more from you then my real art teacher!! I love this!!
Thank you for the lovely comment, Emily Rose
Beautiful done and your technique and teaching is superb. Love your accent too, my maternal grandparents came from England. I always wanted to go there but wasn't able to. Thank you for sharing!
Very inspiring and informative!! And beautiful!! Thanks so much!! 🙏🙏
Excellent demonstration! So beautiful. I can’t wait to try this technique. Thank you and I love your English accent
Thanks for the comment Kathy - I'm pleased you enjoyed the demonstration... and my accent...
Great instructional video. I have been working on a cloud study as of late and this “lifting” method I am anxious to “give it a go”. Thank you so much for sharing.😊
This turn out beautiful. I've tried to paint clouds in watercolor many times & used the method you showed here. Mine of course are near as beautiful as yours came out, but practice makes perfect. I sure hope so! Using 200 lb paper I realize must make a big difference, I've only used 140 lb. So now I'll try it with the 200 lb. Its very easy to destroy your paper very fast if not careful, or even if you are careful. This is the fourth video I've watched of yours & I've learned quite allot from them all, even though they weren't very long. So thanks very much for each one and the fun ideas I learned. The sheep were by far the most fun!😊
Beautiful demo. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing - I'm going to adopt this way of doing clouds. Very nice. Thanks for your generous sharing.
You're very welcome syongwc - I'm pleased you enjoyed the demonstration and feel that it is a technique that inspires you (it just takes a little practice...).

Aaaw! - Thanks Valerie - appreciate the comment!
Great stuff Peter - lovely to see you progress second by second with the application of paint, the blending with clear water and then the rubbing with tissue - Alison
Thanks Alison - I'm pleased you enjoyed it!
