Storm Approaching - Bare House, Grassington

I've been out and about in Wharfedale again - seeking out one of the most remote farmsteads on Grassington Moor. Despite being a little on the windy side, the sky was mostly blue and the walking was very enjoyable - yet - when it came to painting the subject in watercolour, I just couldn't resist the temptation to make things a bit stormier... A full-length, non-timelapsed version of the painti...
The Humble Pencil (Mossy Wall)

In a world where AI-driven art seems to be gaining ever more publicity and attention - often at the expense of traditional, organic methods of creating original images, I just find myself coming back to the humble pencil as a simple, but powerful tool for expression. ABANDONED WRECK IN WATERCOLOUR

As an artist, I'm constantly on the lookout for new, interesting and challenging -subjects. Yet, I am consistently finding that the subjects which grab my attention the most are not necessarily the obvious ones. The painting featured in this video is a good case in point - I wasn't looking for it, but it came completely out of left field... and there it was... The rotting carcass of an old, aba...
LINTON FALLS IN WATERCOLOUR
zhlédnutí 1,2KPřed 4 měsíci
We took a walk from Burnsall to Linton Falls in Wharfedale recently. This is a brief record of some of the things we saw along the way, and an extract of the watercolour painting I did of part of the falls. The painting was produced without any pre-planning in pencil; a loose, spontaneous approach that I like to indulge in once in a while - and one that means the finished painting is as much a ...
Gnarly Trees at Hardcastle Crags
zhlédnutí 1,3KPřed 5 měsíci
I came across a whole bunch of gnarly trees at Hardcastle Crags, near Hebden Bridge, recently. They can be something of a challenge to paint, though, being as chaotic as they are. I find it best to just dive in with as little preparation as I can get away with, and just enjoy the process of exploration and discovery. The result could use some finesse, but it serves as a reasonable demonstration...
LAST LIGHT, WHARFEDALE (Simon's Seat and Howgill)

Join me in Wharfedale on a walk up to Barden Moor on a cold January morning. My aim was to reach Simon’s Seat - a well known rocky outcrop in these parts. Despite the rocks being my prime objective, the surprise of the day came right at the end, on my way back to the car, when I discovered an absolutely fantastic scene, looking back up the hill, with the sun going down on an old stone barn… ver...

I love a stone circle, and 'The Twelve Apostles', located on the wild moors above Ilkley, not only makes a superb subject for painting, but also for a great local walk out. Capturing a suitable source photograph proved to be a bit of a challenge for several reasons, but then I just had to be a little more resourceful when it came to planning my watercolour... This is an extract from a much long...

Climbing to the top of a mountain or hill is a great way to collect panoramic vistas. Of course, With the unpredictability of the weather, such views are never guaranteed. SKETCHING A SNOW-SCENE IN PENCIL (Winter Imagined)
zhlédnutí 2,3KPřed 8 měsíci
I love a snowscene. We don't get that much snow, though - not where I live anyway. Not that it really makes a difference; if I fancy painting or drawing a snowscene, then I can generally conjure one up from from my imagination. This is a pencil sketch, where I explore turning a photograph taken in the summer into a wintery snowscene. To see the full, uncut 52-minute version, which includes the ...
The Perfect Medium - Painting a Sky in Watercolour
zhlédnutí 4KPřed 9 měsíci
Watercolour is a natural medium for painting skies. If you think about the nature of skies and how clouds are formed, then you begin to realise that it’s all to do with moisture in the air. What better way to capture it then, than with a loose, water-based medium. I’ve recently been playing around with a variety of complex skies - here's one of them... In the second of my CZcams Sketchbooks series, I'll be indulging in bit of line and wash. I love the technique, particularly for sketching. Since time and the weather are not always sympathetic to our needs in a sketching situation, it's a great method for getting the basic information down in a sketchbook as efficiently as possible. Barn in Patterdale

It never ceases to amaze me how, even when surrounded by some of the finest landscape this country has to offer, it can sometimes be difficult to find just the right subject. Having said that, it is with an equal amount of amazement that some ...

Hi Nancy - These are just free samples/extracts from a longer demonstration (which also includes how I start and finish a painting, complete with a full breakdown to help teach others to learn the watercolour techniques... it's how I make my living, and is very much my primary interest). Keep up the fight. Against AI
Hi Peter, just came across this video. I worked in the shipyards of glasgow so have always been inspired by the industry plus I was a Draughtsman. I did a small watercolour scene in Glasgow as the sun set over it. Cheers Charlie
Another excellent demo , I enjoy your dullest tones of description with great individual style thanks for your expressive work
Peter out of all the many people on CZcams doing watercolour painting. YOU are by far the dogs bol...s ,,best wishes from Thailand
Thank you so much! An excellent lesson, Alex
Beautiful
Great video , think I'll just keep painting this scene until I get it looking right. Important to experiment when you are learning I think and not be too precious about your early efforts. thanks Peter 👍
Thank you so much. Such a wonderful paining. I love it😊.
Excellent tutorial! Thank you. Beautiful scene and you made it approachable.
Wow! Nice work.
The crazy way this guy moves his face, head and mouth while he speaks is mesmerizing!
Thanks Pete, love your paintings and the way you describe the land is amazing, wish it was closer to Queensland mate😊as I don't much like the long airline flights, will just have to imagine I am there through your great videos.
So beautiful Peter!
Beautiful painting and helpful explanations as well.
Beautiful.
Excellent demo love your style
Very helpful thank you!
Vaporosas como son ellas gracias
Beautiful...the colours are simply enticing!
Thanks Suneeta.
Beautiful.....your choice of primaries Prussian blue and cadmium yellow, unusual though, lend a serene, ethereal calm to the landscape...very engaging indeed!
Thank you Suneeta - I'm pleased you enjoyed it. Serene and ethereal are good - mission accomplished.
Beautifully done!
That is really useful Peter. This is the first time I've seen an artist actually break down what they do in detail & explain why they do it in order to produce an advanced full featured top level version. Thank you
Thanks Colin - I'm pleased you enjoyed it, and that you found it helpful.
@@peterwoolleyartist Very much so. Thank you for sharing it with us
Wow, I thought I had to be the only one to start over and over trying to paint the norther lights. This is a great technique. I can't wait to try it. One question, What do I do if it does start to dry out? Thank you
If it starts to dry out... panic! No - seriously - don't panic, just speed things up , because once it dries out it's game over.
Loved watching that! Watercolour and I are not good friends... which makes your very interesting to watch. Thank you from Cyprus.
Thank you Maria - you should try to patch things up with watercolour... you'll never look back!
Yesss! I just watched probably 15 different cloud videos, and this is by far my favorite. I'm so excited to try it, I can't contain myself. Thank you Peter! I'll graduate to the none stopping out technique after I master this 😀
Thanks R&P - I'm pleased this one ticked all the necessary boxes!
shameful that the tree was vandalised so deliberately , some beautiful images of it in your video , thank you
Indeed... still leaves me rather speechless actually. Thanks for the comment Trevor.
loved that Peter
Thanks Trevor - I'm pleased you enjoyed it.
Beautiful. Peter ! Very different this time. ❤😊
Thank you Tahera.
At least your subject did not get bored and fidget.
There was always the danger it might disintegrate, though. Thanks for the comment Wendy!
Wonderful composition…love the Yorkshire landscapes..been to Grassington…charming place
I agree - Grassington is a lovely place - it always suprises me how large it is - more a small Dales town than a village. Thanks for the comment Linda.
Beautiful!
Thank you Suneeta!
Nice. I love the sky.
Thanks Doug - I'm pleased you enjoyed it.
Wonderful walk Peter, so happy you didn’t paint this scene as you found it. I found your painting an awesome piece, thank you Peter. ♥️
Thanks Consuelo - I just felt it had to be a little wilder.

You're very welcome - thank you for the comment Mahyar.
You always take such good walks. Makes me homesick.

New to yr channel..love art.i was a street artist. Doing mainly biblical art..also i haven't seen your pencil fr years..my grandad worked fr B.T and thars wat he was given as a telephone operator. I loved the pencils the sharpener at the top was brilliant
Awesome piece!!! Thanks for sharing this...
Thank you so much for sharing this, I’ve been a drawer/sketcher since childhood, I’m now in my 70’s and I’m still learning. Thank you again.
You're very welcome Patricia - good to hear you're still at it - and we never stop learning (which is one of the reasons art is so endlessly fascinating) - thank you for the lovely comment!
Pencil is so versatile, In comparison to the vibrance and impact of skilled hand, I too am humbled. AI will never reflect the soul of an artist, it imitates the fundamentals and takes from what's been made. While man weaves his inspiration from the Almighty and his creation.
Fantastic drawing work sir 👌
Now that's what I call a mossy wall. Very nice.
That vid was wonderful. What kind of paper do you use?
Thanks Maggie - I'm pleased you like it. The paper is Frisk Bristol Board 250gsm
