    Don't forget that Sam made the important point that there are major benefits to PR when you're a smaller influencer and don't have $50 billion to blow on all the new products. You've said you're on a budget as a student, so your receiving PR is totally different. ❤️

    I feel like there's a difference between being purposefully dishonest and being out of touch. I think a lot of larger producers are out of touch with reality. It's been so long since they had to actually weigh their purchasing options and budget, they forget what money really... means?
    It's a natural side effect of having enough money that you don't need to worry about it, and a $125 palette is no big deal. Where an average consumer might have to save up for six months to spend that much.
    I've heard so many times "It's $50, so not TOO expensive" and I realize how out of touch they are. For a normal average consumer not in the makeup industry, $50 is a LOT of money for one container of colored powder or liquid. Shit, that's my phone bill for the month. My husband has to work like four hours to make that $50.

    I don't think the Colourpop thing is the same as Huda x Beauty Bakerie controversy. Huda copied marketing and creative aspects from Beauty Bakerie, while Colourpop simply developed a similar product - which, btw, is nothing new, as these glitter products on a gel base have been around for ages...

    • @bibsberti
      @bibsberti Před 5 lety +9

      Bianca Berti just because something is legal doesn’t make it less shady. People are up in arms about Shop Hush and they blatant rip off of popular products. It’s really not any different. But they making an order shows how little Colourpop cares about the shadiness and their image because the beauty community is fickle and people jump in and off band wagons quickly.

    • @bibsberti
      @bibsberti Před 5 lety +10

      @@shawndamichelle639 but still, it is different. By shop hush I'm assuming you're referring to Bad Habit palettes, which copy other brands palettes entirely. Stealing a theme, a whole color scheme, that's stealing the creative dimension of a product. Reproducing the formula isn't. If it were, well, every single brand out there is complete shit for copying Maybelline original mascara formula back in the day.

    I’ve always thought that James Charles is a bit full of himself, which is probably why he said his palette will break the makeup industry and he’s made the only true red. I understand why he may be a bit cocky, because of how young he is (saying that made me feel a little old although I’m younger than him) and being as popular as he is. Still, he’s exudes a certain kind of entitlement that really turns me off.

    • @claireeebee
      @claireeebee Před 5 lety +6

      I liked him at one point but I honestly can't with him. The way he attacked Marlena (Makeup Geek.. I might've spelled her name wrong) made me so mad. I don't care that he doesn't like her but to invalidate her job, experience, etc. I can't support him. On top of all the other things he's said/done. I think he has a horrible, entitled attitude. I know he apologized but the fact he went there in the first place makes me not care for him. People always say "he's young" but I didn't do that kinda stuff and most young people don't. So it's pretty insulting to young people. Sorry, my rant is over :)

    I'd actually never watched Samantha before, I saw her video in someone's insta story. 100% agreed with her. I personally NEVER watch PR unboxings, and I am always more wary of heavily-sent PR people.. Just how it is. I'm 23 and I've been living off my own dollar for like 9 years.. I'm not out here trying to spend it all on average products; which I do think can happen when people are disconnected from the true value of a product. I liked how she mentioned PR was great for new YTbers, I see it's an expensive gig and the early releases can be helpful for getting viws - however, I'm not a kid and I don't need to buy every new release ASAP - I'm more than happy to wait, live my life, save my coin, and make my decision as the reviews come out. Also, side rant, people do need to realize (like she said) it's not brands being all lovely and friendly sending you gifts.. It's called PR for a reason, it's business .. But CZcams beauty videos for me are not just a business. I skip adds for a reason, I don't click on 30 min ones for fun! People talk so much about "missing the old youtube" .. maybe getting excited about individual great products would be a start :)

    I keep waiting for a bigger YT’er to find a small channel and send a box of PR to them that they won’t review. Imagine if a box from Tati showed up at your door. You’d never have to know it was from her (if she didn’t want to disclose that). Even if she did it monthly and never said a word about it. I don’t see a downside. Yes donating to charity/shelters is great but they can only accept so much makeup. (They need feminine products, toothpaste + brushes, sunscreens, pet food, etc).

    I watched Beauty News today and they talked a little about the Colourpop and Lemonhead situation. They commented that sometimes companies buy products to make sure they aren't the same as theirs, or just to compare quality. They also said somebody did a comparison video and said they weren't the same. They didn't really have a conclusion, except that if it is a copy, then that's pretty terrible. I haven't used either and I probably won't, because I'm not a body glitter kind of person. I do wonder what's up with Colourpop and their intentions though. kristina erickson it depends on the color/ shadow, but you’re 100% correct that for the most intense payoff many brighter &/ or colorful dark shadows work best when applied with more of a tapping/patting motion and then , for blending, rather than swiping, etc it often works best to apply the shadow where you want it to be most concentrated & then blend it out around the edges.

The term baking was around long before beauty bakerie and the popularity in the cutesie retro aesthetic really came about years ago on the continent and Britain (thank you to great British bake off for making it OK, cool and mainstream I think) so I can see how huda's team would've got there on their own. I'm a bit of a pedant, and I was a History major. I think James Charles meant "make makeup history" not "break makeup history." That sounds like he's trying to "break the internet." I think breaking history would require a pretty large change to the status quo: revolution, coup, war or massive destruction. His palatte is pretty, but I don't think it is revolutionary.
    I think the primer issue is a Morphe shadow issue, and he's trying to avoid Jaclyn's Vault drama. I use eye primer and it improved my eyeshadow looks, but that's personal preference. I do think it's curious that he was so anti-primer, and now has to back track to cover the Morphe shadows.
    I had a blue body glitter from Bonne Bell/Lip Smackers in 1997 that looked very similar to both Lemonhead and Colourpop. It's sketchy of Colourpop, but it's a fairly common industry practice. My opinion is unhelpful and overly-snarky: "The 90s called, they would like their body glitter back."

There’s the waste aspect, but I also want these brands to get a kick up the arse and put thought into what they release instead of spitting out new products on a near weekly basis. If a lot of influencers opt to not get PR and these companies know off bat that they WON’T get that promotion, they can maybe redirect those resources towards product development or even corporate social responsibility (which might be preferred considering all the aforementioned waste).

    This is why I want beauty gurus to post (at least annually) their permanent favorites. Do your monthly videos, sure. But please include what your V.I.P. is and if I changes. That’s all I want when it comes down to it. All of these products that you are saying are amazing and holy grails are just..excessive, and they overwhelm me. Don’t get me wrong, I get incredibly interested in new products, but my end goal is to find the ultimates for myself. 😔
    EDIT: I should take away the sad face! I already have two staples: my Lancôme mascara and Clio Kill Cover brow stain and mascara. But dang it..I feel like I’ll never get a great foundation or concealer, because they keep reviewing new ones and never coming back to them! Grr.

    With CP and LH drama: i didnt really have an opinion until I heard yours tbh. but what I have come down to is basically that its shady for colourpop to order it themselves, and them put it out. But like you said, not exactly.. illegal or "wrong". I think it would have been different of Bretman had just brought his glitter in and said "i want it like this" and they did it, rather then spending money and buying it outright with the intention of duping it.

      @claireeebee Před 5 lety +1

      I think that's the line for me. CP bought the product with the intent of stealing it. Maybe if they just saw pictures and tried their best at dupping it, I would feel different. Idk. I'm sure more companies do this than we know but the blatant way they went about it turned me off.

    I like watching Tati’s PR unboxing because she donates or does giveaways for her subs, but thats about it. I miss genuine hauls with stuff people went out and bought themselves, not what the companies sent them.

  • @sos1518
    @sos1518 Před 5 lety +1

    I like what you said about PR being received but then no accompanying review. You are spot on. Why companies are sending makeup, or anything in any market, to people that just do a PR unboxing/haul is something I just can't wrap my brain around. I love seeing things actually reviewed before/near the launch date. Definitely helps me decide what to get and what to pass on.
    The other thing that drives me bonkers regarding PR are the videos that people do where they save their PR until they have a big enough "haul" to do a video instead of showing them as they receive them. A lot of times the products are already launched and then it's just extra frustrating when you find out they have had that product for awhile and just wanted to wait until they got more. Like are 5 min videos about a single PR item a bad thing?
    I don't know, just my thoughts.

    Oh wow my perspective is so different when it comes to trying makeup! I am not at all on a quest to find my favorites and then keep using those. I think most of the fun for me comes from learning the differences between different products and figuring out the best ways to use them. I think the day I find all my favorites and want to keep just buying those is the day I lose interest in doing makeup. :)

    re: dupes, I think what makes this situation different is that it's a powerhouse company copying a small indy brand (if they really did copy, which there's no way to know as far as I can tell). I don't take all that much issue with a smaller or less notable brand taking direct inspiration from iconic, expensive brands...that is the entire story of the fashion industry. Marc Jacobs puts a coat on the runway for $10,000, and a few months later various versions of that coat are available at multiple retailers from Anthropologie to Zara to H&M to Etsy at multiple price points and multiple levels of quality. But when a company like Urban Outfitters copies an Etsy design, I think that's gross. To me, one is about trickle-down trendsetting and making beautiful things accessible to all, and the other is stealing & taking advantage. Since the Lemonhead product wasn't exactly trending, if Colourpop decided to steal their idea...it falls more in the second category to me, but it is somewhat complex and unclear and I don't know why I AGAIN wrote such a long comment YOU JUST MAKE ME WANT TO WRITE LONG COMMENTS HANNAH, OKAY????

    I appreciate what Samantha is doing by taking herself off PR. She seemed overwhelmed by it and recently she’s even admitted that she doesn’t really love doing CZcams. I feel like she would start to resent Makeup if she kept getting tons and tons of makeup each week. I do think the idea of PR is important so we can see reviews prior to launch but they don’t need to send the entire range of foundation or make elaborate packaging. I don’t really care what the package looks like I want to know that it’s a good product. With James I roll my eyes with him. I tried watching some of his videos earlier this year but I can’t handle the constant “sister” or the attitude. He acts like he has more talent and knowledge than those who have been doing this for years. And he started out his career by lying about his yearbook picture. I won’t buy the palette because I don’t really use a lot of those colors and I don’t really want to support morphe. I feel like there are so many other men in Makeup that deserve more recognition

Damned if you’re negative, dammed if you’re too positive. Also, I agree too with the JC things you were saying. I love Sam! She is so unbelievably classy and honest! Her doing what she did with her PR made me love her even more.
    I agree with her that these larger youtubers should let the smaller Channels have a shot at getting PR. I know you used Tati as an example but why can’t someone like her purchase stuff on her own? I understand that the sooner you get stuff out the better, but I dont think Tati has her hand on the pulse of the new launches anymore, she doesn’t really need to. Her fans are so loyal that she can pretty much do whatever and she will get views. I find her really entertaining and informative, I watch her nearly everyday. I saw another comment about Emily, and I totally agree. I never watch PR Unboxing’s, I think they are totally obnoxious so I guess I didn’t realize she got so much or that the stuff she got she never talks about... that should be an indication to the brands that someone smaller should get a chance... Jessica Braun is the same way, she even admits that she gets so much stuff from brands in PR, a lot of the stuff she never shows.. she gives it away to family and friends...
    It’s a tricky subject I guess.
    I love all the people I mentioned, but even those people are saying enough is enough.. Sam is just the first one to say no more and I’m so proud of her 💜

Idk if that makes sense but this is such a dilemma for me because I totally agree with you but I also see all the other point.

    My issue with dupes are the ones that are the same shades and same theme exactly. Those bother me. There is no creativity and it is just a cheaper version of something that a brand put a lot of thought and effort into.
    However, there is SO much makeup out there that "dupes" are going to happy. There are only so many shades and color stories that make sense.
    James Charles totally put me off with his palette being the absolute best thing ever to happen to makeup....with Morphe. Like the quality is OK but it doesn't compare to like ABH or Huda shadows. Also, my unpopular opinion about her is she didn't steal that idea from Beauty Bakerie....

I'm not accepting PR this year but I'm going to be open to it next year, so I'm potentially just about to start being part of the system that she just decided to gracefully bow out of. The issue of waste is close to my heart. I hope that more CZcamsrs will start asking companies to send more reasonably-sized packages...influencers as big as Tati could actually have the power to REQUIRE that change from companies. I think this is the kind of issue that might actually be actionable via some kind of petition or hashtag? LMK if you have any ideas.

    I really liked the Samantha video. The waste with the PR packaging was not something I would have thought of, but I also had been thinking how overwhelming the volume of items could get. Not that I get PR or think I'd ever get that big, but I get anxious about random things. And i have fallen into that mindset of "well I'm a youtuber and I should buy that to review" when I'm just one lady with one face and am not making any money off of youtuber. So normal usage people like myself fall into over purchasing because we see so many things being tried by the bigger influencers. I think making it a collab or sponsor product only allows her to only accept items she's excited for and that won't overwhelm her collection.

    I think the Colourpop situation is pissing people off bc they are a large company compared to Lemonhead LA. If MUG or Colourpop dupes the companies that are bigger than they are it doesn't worry people as much bc of the power balance. Same with Huda vs Beauty Bakerie - it's a big powerful company potentially ripping off a much less advantaged company. That's my take on it, anyway!

LH said that he copied their colors but he made a whole line based on the colors of the flag of the Philippines... and red and blue are not really original colors so it's hard to say that that was copying? I'm not sure. I also kind of feel like the idea is not super original and I know LH is saying that their formula of glitter gel is unlike anything else but I still don't feel like a body glitter in a gel-like formula is an original idea? Not sure what to think but I'm not interested in LH's product or the Bretman collection so I'm not buying either way I guess :)
