    DO NOT ATTEMPT TO RESET FUSE WITH THE POWER CORD STILL CONNECTED TO THE WALL. ON SOME DRYERS THESE WIRES CONNECTED WILL STILL BE HOT/ACTIVE (EVEN WHEN YOU THINK THE DRYER IS OFF.

    You just saved my behind. Our dryer stopped working on Saturday the day we got back from vacation after only one load. We still had three loads to go and that didn’t include all my work clothes from the prior week. Thanks to you and your video and me of course, our dryer is now running and drying, with a new part ordered and on its way. 👍🏻👍🏻

    OMG!!! I’ve replaced 5-6 of them and did all the extra crap and never once thought of it needing to be reset even though it it a thermal FUSE. fuses can be reset. I just did it and boom it works again!!! I did have a thermostat piece from buying to many parts in the event it keeps breaking. Changed it out just in case that was the issue. No lint or anything.

    While I was out of town, my partner had a repair man come and he charged $225.00 to put a new hi temp fuse in, not sure they even changed the other switch. 2 months later and it has the same issue. If it trips again I'll order the 3 wire switch but in the meantime the dryer works! Your hack is brilliant and worked for me. Keep up the good work!

      @bettinanstevens9259 Před rokem +2

      A year later. You may have bought a new dryer by now or figured out what is causing the thermal cut off to keep tripping. The reason it keeps tripping is most likely because one or all, of three things. Your dryer vent duct hose is clogged with lint, your the duct behind the lint screen inside the dryer is clogged, or your dryer lint screen is clogged but probably doesn't look clogged (dryer sheet residue blocking the air flow).

    • @Mr.BigDaddyBronco

      @@bettinanstevens9259its the thermostat not blockage. The thermostat..then the thermal fuse because of thermostat. If it's blockage then God bless the neighborhood

    • @bettinanstevens9259
      @bettinanstevens9259 Před rokem +2

      @@Mr.BigDaddyBronco No, if you read the comment this person has had a thermal shut off keep tripping. Its just like mine and the problem wasn't the thermostat. What happens is when the dryer vent gets even semi-blocked heat builds up inside the dryer because it cannot escape though the vent fast enough and it heats up the thermal cutoff and it does its job by cutting off the heat.

    Thank you for the info. Question - I just found that the Thermal Fuse was tripped on our speed queen, however, what actually controls the cycling on/off of the elements? Is it the thermal fuse or is it the limit thermostat? Does the thermostat ever fail closed which ultimately causes the thermal fuse to trip?

    • @TheVintageEngineer
      @TheVintageEngineer  Před rokem

      If I understand it correctly the thermistor in the front of the dryer lets the computer know what the temp is. The computer then turns on and off the relay that controls the elements. I think both the cycling and the hi limit are double safety features (fire avoidance). I think they use a self resetting one for the lower temp due to possibilities of false positives.

    Have you ever put one in an electric skillet to see if it still tripped at the rated temperature?
    Or some other way if heating it up to 3?? degrees?
    Sorry can’t think right off hand what many if those are rated at. I think it is usually over 300f.

    • @TheVintageEngineer
      @TheVintageEngineer  Před 2 lety +2

      I have tripped it on a gas stove in a skillet but it’s hard to get the temperature set to a specific one and see because of the heat soak of the skillet.

    • @TheVintageEngineer
      @TheVintageEngineer  Před rokem +1

      Just enough to break through the plastic layer. There is a slight air gap between the metallic strip and the housing. Use the lightest touch so when it breaks through it doesn’t damage the strip. Also to confirm function, I would heat it up and confirm it trips before reinstalling.

  • @rickeykeeton4770

    Does this affect the accuracy of the thermal cutoff?
    Looked like it took a little longer to trip it the second time after the hole was drilled in it.
    Should the hole be closed in someway, so it will trip at the set rating?
    Btw, do you ever just slap then on a hard surface to reset them?
    I have done that a few times. Not sure I ever knowingly reused one I had reset, but it helps when testing for other problems that a dryer might have.

    • @TheVintageEngineer
      @TheVintageEngineer  Před 2 lety +1

      Video has some of the heating time edited out so don’t go by that. I’m not understanding why the hole being open would change the set point. Its just a housing. I tried getting this one to reset by slamming and couldn’t until I stuck it in the freezer for a few hours and then hit it.

    • @samjackson3359

    • @TheVintageEngineer

    @IjeomaThePlantMama Před 2 lety +2

    Thanks for the video! I don't have a drill bit that thin, so I'm hoping the freezing method will work. If I shake my thermal fuse, I can hear something rattling around. Is this the thing that needs to be "reset"? And if so, would throwing it in the freezer and then smaking it work? Thanks!

    • @TheVintageEngineer
      @TheVintageEngineer  Před 2 lety +2

      I don’t think it should rattle but anyways. I actually reset it myself this way before by doing the freeze/smack. By freezing it, it will put more tension on it to pull it back into the reset position, won’t be cold enough to pull it all the way, but should make it easier to smack it into position than if it was room temp. Use a multimeter to confirm reset.
