  • Upanishads follow the four vedas (Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda and Atharvaveda), and Brahmanas and Aranyakas. It is in Upanishads that the focus decisively shifts from rituals to knowledge. The vast expanse of ten major Upanishads and many minor ones cover a great array of philosophical concepts and spiritual inquiry. Upanishads hence signify a pivotal juncture in the evolution of the vedic philosophy. They also are a vital sliver of the literary history of ancient India.
Thus, the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute is delighted to bring you a CZcams series of 13 lectures on Upanishads that begins with this first introductory interaction between Dr. Sucheta Paranjpe and Dr. Gauri Moghe. During the course of next 12 sessions, multiple scholars will introduce viewers to each of the 10 major upanishads. There will be two sessions on how to understand upanishads.
On each Tuesday and Friday a new episode of this series will be released. So stay tuned and subscribe to our CZcams channel for regular updates.

With all due respect to both of you, my humble request is that you use a board or better prepared slides to have better communication with Shishyas. Architecture and interrelationship between different Upanishads can be better appreciated if a pictorial help is taken. I am ardent lover of our philosophy, 86 years of age living in USA.

karma is essential for purifying mind. Without which we are not qualified to practice vedantha. Karma should leave one on its own as one's mind is purified by karma and focused by upasana, and lost in vedantha dhyana. No one should deliberately give up karma, (while still enjoying everything else in the world). That is a wrong understanding

Even though I am not Indian I read some of the Upanishads when I was 20. I am glad I did because my mind and heart were fresh. I found the texts very moving and inspirational. Then I went on and lived my karma-dharma. That was 55 years ago and now I have returned to these incredible ancient teachings...

So I think there should be no issues on using everyday examples to make the subject easier to understand but may be it could be presented with a verbal caveat that this is a crude example and only meant for oversimplification of the idea. This will make sure that nitpickers don't get a chance to overshadow the important ideas.

Very well explained madam. Interesting to know the divisions .
Since post vedantic period , saw the development of many upanishads, dealing with different subjects , perhaps this is the reason Shankaracharya called the 10 important philosophic work as Mukhya Upanishads. Thank you for this video.

Dr. Bannanje Govindacharya great Vedic scholar from Karnataka gives a beautiful meaning of the word upanishad. Up means higher or upper and nishad means to carry. Meaning elevated knowledge. This literally fits the real purport of Upanishads
