# Ep 1 - Upanishads - The Essence of Vedic Philosophy

- čas přidán 29. 08. 2021
- Upanishads follow the four vedas (Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda and Atharvaveda), and Brahmanas and Aranyakas. It is in Upanishads that the focus decisively shifts from rituals to knowledge. The vast expanse of ten major Upanishads and many minor ones cover a great array of philosophical concepts and spiritual inquiry. Upanishads hence signify a pivotal juncture in the evolution of the vedic philosophy. They also are a vital sliver of the literary history of ancient India.
Thus, the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute is delighted to bring you a CZcams series of 13 lectures on Upanishads that begins with this first introductory interaction between Dr. Sucheta Paranjpe and Dr. Gauri Moghe. During the course of next 12 sessions, multiple scholars will introduce viewers to each of the 10 major upanishads. There will be two sessions on how to understand upanishads.
On each Tuesday and Friday a new episode of this series will be released. So stay tuned and subscribe to our CZcams channel for regular updates.

With all due respect to both of you, my humble request is that you use a board or better prepared slides to have better communication with Shishyas. Architecture and interrelationship between different Upanishads can be better appreciated if a pictorial help is taken. I am ardent lover of our philosophy, 86 years of age living in USA.
Absolutely right. I liked your suggestion and strongly support it. In modern communication charts and pictorial presentation is very effective. Later on if I think about the lecture, I will immediately remember the visual presentation and then the words.

The production quality and the presentation of the topic was absolutely top notch! Looking forward to more of these.
Upnishads are natural but unless one can read Sanskrit it becomes impossible to get essence out of it. Can you please suggest simple translation in English or Marathi ?
Clear exposition of the complex and interesting subject of Upanishads at once appealing even to the uninitiated.Pranams to the teacher.

I used to be a research student of this magnificent research centre. My koti koti naman to this place.
The final note of the session , transitioning from ritual to spiritual is worth to learn, remember and practice. It’s like a realized soul transitioning from Karma path to Jyana. Thank you both , for having a great knowledgeable session with audience.
karma is essential for purifying mind. Without which we are not qualified to practice vedantha. Karma should leave one on its own as one's mind is purified by karma and focused by upasana, and lost in vedantha dhyana. No one should deliberately give up karma, (while still enjoying everything else in the world). That is a wrong understanding
Dr Paranjape’s introduction to Upanishads is fascinating. I am longing to hear her all forthcoming lectures. Her sonorous voice is a feast to the ears. Namastey to Bhandarkar Institute- treasure house of Vedic and Eitihasic studies.
Even though I am not Indian I read some of the Upanishads when I was 20. I am glad I did because my mind and heart were fresh. I found the texts very moving and inspirational. Then I went on and lived my karma-dharma. That was 55 years ago and now I have returned to these incredible ancient teachings...
I want to add that these women uphold the dignity of their gender by the way they dress. I hope India retains this custom.
Pleasure to hear Dr. Paranjpe. Her explanations are so easy to follow even for lay people. Please organise more such talks. It is so difficult to get proper explanations for our scriptures. Thank you for organising this talk.

I found listening to Dr, Paranjpe's scholarly exposition on what Upanishads are and their significance in the development of Vedic learning traditions very, very illuminating. Her observations have ably assigned the Upanishads in their right historical settings. They were a scholarly introduction to understand them. My deep gratitude's and appreciatins to Dr, Paranjpe.
Wonderful wonderful initiative, thankful to the YT algorithm that got me here
Subscribed, and looking forward to learning more about the Vedas and Upanishads in a similarly simplified way

Upansihad is something that takes you from ritual to spiritual. Fantastic. THANKS Dr Paranjpe
I am not Brahmin, but after seeing this video,I want to study in vedas and upnishad.it is beyond the cast and religion.
Very thankful to paranjape mam!
As long as you have interest in knowledge above anything, your goal is to become brahmana (The Knower of Brahm). Telling you this coz studies of these texts mention brahmana, that time understand that they are referring to you.
Who said only Brhamins can learn vedas and shastra

Must say: Content shared is of great quality.
Awesome, hope we will have lots of Sanskrit Shloka quotes and references in subsequent lectures like we had in the Mahabharata lectures
'Upanidhads tske you from thr RITUAL to the SPIRITUAL. " This concluding summarising statement of Prof Paranjape was a 'good take home' for me.
Dr. Paranpe, I am listening to the Ocean of your lessons on your discovery of the Upanishads and self realization. But, every human being is only a particle or dot in the science dominated universe . Thanks. You are great ! God bless you !
Absolutely top notch. The last sentence uttered by Dr. Paranjape really conveys the gist of Upanishads - 'They take you from ritual to spiritual '. Thanks to both the ladies.
This is the best and desirable attempt to enlighten the current generation.
Thank you so much BORI. This was much awaited. Looking forward to listening to Dr. Paranjpe and collecting pearls for the knowledge Bank. Upanishads take you from' Rituals to Spiritual'...what a great definition! Simply Overwhelmed !!
I am very happy to attend and listen this session. BORI has taken a good step to distribute our treasure throgh Pandita Dr. Paranjape and learned Sutrasanchalak. Lot of compliments for this programme. Eagerly awaiting the next Episode.👋👋👋
This is fantastic, am loving learning the basics of Hindu thought and philosophy in this format as it is matter of fact and authentic- no embellishments
An apt introduction to Vedic Literature and in particular to Upanishads by explaining the etymological beauty of Upanishads and its contents. Superb presentation of the transition of vedic literature from 'ritual to spiritual '. Waiting for more sessions.
What a simple and enlightening conversation.Very blissful. Pranams to you Dr. Paranjpe.🙏🙏
As a devout Hindu and lover of Indian Philosophy I earnestly await to listen your dissertation. Since my childhood Upanishad played a vital source of inspiration to awaken in me the knowledge of "Guru Sishya" parampara, which ultimately turned me to the path of Sadhana after my initiation from my Yogi Guru 1008 Swami Viswapranab Attyaashram, later my Tantra Guru Agambagish Paramananda Tirthanath ji. I thank you very much for uploading such commentary.

Enlightening and much needed episode. Thank you so much for this.
Story, structure and then philosophy on how Upanishads get attracted by the seeker.
Lucid, analytical and pleasant.

Excellent introduction to the great light of the Upanishads.
Absolutely riveting. Prof Sucheta Paranjape makes an erudite topic so captivating with her style.
Casually hit the button, stayed glued to Dr.Paranjape, I'm eager for all the discussions to follow..
Thanks a lot.... literally i got goose bumps after listening her explanation....it was my long time wish to know about The Upanishads...my wish is getting fulfilled..thank you once again
*upanishads take you from ritual to spiritual*-- Quite informative and useful. After all the 9 schools of Indian philosophy are supported by upanishads without imposing them on others. Few prakarana granthas of Adi Shankaracharya based on upanishads.
Ritual - understood. What is spirirual? Can you please explain.
@@jacobcheriyan according to classical Indian philosophy knowing one's own true nature is spiritualism. A seeker goes through various levels before realizing the required level. Typed the part of the speaker's sentence because it describes the total thing in short.
@@AkshayChaitanya , so one is able to do rhe rituals right from the beginning but takes time to understand spirituality?
@@jacobcheriyan spiritualism never rejects rituals which are mainly economically, psychologically based and promoted in the name of this or that. It is a long journey so you'll find few are spiritualistic from childhood and are less interested in rituals whether old or new. Toys are given for time pass and not for forgetting the giver. Pleasure and honour to hear this lucid explanation.
I bow my head for this wonderful session. 🌹
It is very enlightening, when Dr. Paranjape explains the topic. Thanks to BORI for organising this series. Anxiously waiting for the subsequent talks. धन्यवाद।
Fantastic--- just blows the mind to see the depth of ancient knowledge and a great presentation-- Thank you
loved it. Looking forward for more episodes of this series!
I enjoyed listening to the first episode. I would urge that the episodes be published in a book form so that we can read them later on at our convenience
So profound but so lucidly explained by Dr. Paranzpe. 🙏
Excellent way of sharing such incredible knowledge!
As a Civil Service aspirant, I can say that it was a knowledgeable session. A lot of times we study things we don't fully understand and it becomes very difficult to memorise the same and use that knowledge later during the exam. However, this particular lecture/ session by Dr. Sucheta ji was really helpful. Thank you.
It would b wonderful to hear if someone said I would use this knowledge during my service to perform bettet
@@hemeshm8290 ofcourse that's why it's a part of syllabus. :)

Thank you so much, both to the guru and shisya. Both the questions and answers are very simple but very profound for every one to understand the fundamentals of Upanishads. Very enriching time to listen and learn 🙏👍🙏
Can't thank Prof Paranjape enough.🙏 Looking forward to the next parts..
Subhodayam, thank you very much to the Team at BORI for their efforts.

Request to please include a peek in to the scientific element in Upanishads also apart from the philosophy side.

Dhanyavad for the brilliant discussions on the Upanishad, the spiritual wealth house of the Indian Culture..
Awaiting for the next series of such sessions we eagerly..
Thanks to Dr Paranjpe and Dr Gouri..
Thank you for the series and introducing us to spiritual knowledge treasure of Upanishads
Very Good Initiative..!! “Ritual to Spiritual”.. This statement shows her Command over the subject..!!
Depth of Knowledge reflects in Brevity..!!
BORI & Madams deserve.. 🙏🙏🙏🙏
This is the type of knowledge that should be encouraged by the 'Indian government' to promote universal love & peace as an aspect of its main foreign policy. Trying only to be attracted to materialistic targets like most other countries will only make India yet another marginal country. Ancient knowledge such as the Upanishad can bring so much happiness, moral value, and satisfaction to every human being, in my thought. Thank you.
Brilliant exposition on Upanishads..it got me hooked! Thanks for the series. looking forward to your next episode
Delighted .looking forward for forthcoming episodes.
Very lucid presentation of ideas. The pinnacle is "transition from Ritual to spritual " Well said Madam !
Very well explained by Dr. Paranjape ma'am and that too in a easy to understand way. A good perspective on vedas and evolution of all vedic literature, contribution of all sections of society in creating this treasure of knowledge.
I look forward to more such sessions by BORI. One needs to understand that this series is for masses and not for scholars. So I think there should be no issues on using everyday examples to make the subject easier to understand but may be it could be presented with a verbal caveat that this is a crude example and only meant for oversimplification of the idea. This will make sure that nitpickers don't get a chance to overshadow the important ideas.
Great presentation and I eagerly await further episodes. Please keep up the good work and many thanks.
🙏🏼 scholarly session 🙏🏼 Thank you BORI and Dr Paranjape. Waiting for the series.
I have found a goldmine in the form of your channel. Thank you. I am starting with this playlist.

Bumped into this channel and got hooked...aligns so well with what I am pursuing now. 🙏
Very well explained madam. Interesting to know the divisions .
Since post vedantic period , saw the development of many upanishads, dealing with different subjects , perhaps this is the reason Shankaracharya called the 10 important philosophic work as Mukhya Upanishads. Thank you for this video.
Very simply and in Upanishadic style it is explained about vaidic literature. Thank for begining such a knowledgeable series.
I am so grateful to u both for this content. Thank u Paranjape mam I bow to u in reverence.🙏
