I added the Leica M system in 2018, following a brief financial windfall, buying a new Leica M10, which may remain the only Leica camera I will ever be able to afford to buy new. It is good to see yet another professional photographer giving a positive assessment of the Voigtlander 50mm APO Lanthar, which appears to punch well above its price point. I have been more interested in 50mm lenses with “character,” but if I ever need to acquire a superbly-optically-corrected 50mm lens, this Voigtlander option is the leading contender.

I recently got a used first gen Leica Q, and last weekend did a trip with that + X-Pro3 and a 27mm f2.8 on it. That proved to be a fantastic travel combo! Leica Q especially for tighter spaces and when there was less light, Fuji otherwise for weather resistance and supremely versatile focal length, which I definitely prefer to 35mm, but is a bit more forgiving compared to a 50mm equivalent.

Sony covers about 49.1% $17.2B turn over in camera sales world wide with Sony sensors in a huge percentage of cameras, the sensor you have on that M11 is a Sony sensor, but Leica put a glass cover over it to sharpen the edges more than on a Sony AR4. So even with Leica lenses on a E mount the Leica will come out better. But it doesn't matter, what ever the outcome; it's always going to just be the user experience and individual luck and effort and light? The only difference on that CMOS on the Leica is its Metal Oxide semiconductor with a twist of (like)CCD colour tech. Personally if anyone is on a budget and low income get a 5D mk1 with its Kodak CCD sensor that was also taken from Leica technology. Stick a prime on it and you're good to-go, save yourself a huge fortune and get the same results with less sharpness and better film-esq result. Always a great channel, but don't get lost in tech, it will kill your fun and creative ethos you already have promoted on this channel. Right......where's my Zinger burger

@@bluejay3945 hi Jay, there is no wrong or right camera, the light, the brain and time you put in will give you something to cherish but if you are asking for advise on a Canon 5D Mk1 classic has an old CCD sensor that was devised to get film people over too digital. It had a unique film feel and a nice CCD colour tech to help push it with a 35mm feel. be careful though there are two versions, the first version was recalled for shutter problems. If you CZcams 5D Mk 1 you'll eventually see how to find the right one via serial numbers. Right... all this said it's only appropriate if you are after an Leica/35mm/ Kodak/ Porta/ film esq result, there are plenty of other older CCD compacts/Dslrs that have CCD sensors but not all have the same result. There is nothing wrong with CMOS sensors / Xtrans sensors or other cameras its just the older CCD's have something arty about them. This seems to have been even more recognised over the last 7 Years but only because of FujiFilm recipes has it become a bit more apparent recently. Don't fall into any hype around gear, try to fall into feel with your own vison and style, and hope for luck because that's part of it sometimes. Regarding a lens I just use a nifty Canon 50 1.8 canon on my older Canons when I'm not in such a serious mood with Sony, its simple and does the job well. Ricoh Gr recommended, FujiFilm Xt1, Canon 1Dmk1, or Nikon D700. Epson Rd1 is special too if you have the pockets. Positive minds can fight bad health so God bless too you.

@4:38 - It's been shown that there is no DR advantage in using the lower res modes of the M11, contrary to Leica's own marketing materials. The default 61 MP mode always provides higher DR and high-ISO performance 100% of the time, in all situations. This seems to be a slightly misguided early marketing misstep from Leica. This is from the Red Dot Forum team and their independent testing, as well as photographers they work with, now that the M11 has been out for a while. So don't sweat it, you were using the right mode for maximum optical performance. Cheers!

But rather the price point they put themselves at, you kind of expect things will be engineered to a point where they have tried to think of everything and cut no corners. But I'm not really getting the impression that's the case either 🤔 As for the USB placement on that thing, I think I'd maybe use one of those magnetic snappy cables to minimize risk of damage due to snagging on cable. You don’t neeed to keep camera on to charge. Just turn on, then plug-in cable, then turn off after some second, it will be charrging.

Sounds like an interesting trip with your "pretty good" camera. I'm sticking with my R5. Although I'm not going to Abu Dhabi. ps. I sold all my old cameras and lenses to MPB and am very happy.

I shoot with an X-Pro3, you can’t charge it when it is on, I dream of an M11 to join my M6. 👍🏼👍🏼

Summarizing your remarks about the camera: rubbish 😛 Or at least full of quirks solved in other cameras a long time ago 😃

I don’t know if it is the camera and lens, or your presets, but i really like your clean, minimalist compositions and the color mix you’ve shared. So, yeah, a bit pricey for my taste.

Been trying to find real world usage of the Voigt 50 APO for the last 2 days and just saw this video pop up, great timing haha. Not sure if it would be overkill for a M3 but I could always adapt it to mirrorless too...

Leica Q2 DNG files are also very saturated and also darker than the standard profile JPEG. They can easily be desaturated using a slider or a saved custom preset of course. On the other hand, since I tend to shoot both raw and JPEG, usually the JPEG needs less correction. Not always, but usually.
Unfortunately my Q2 has no USB or charging through USB. No external ports whatsoever, which makes it almost unique for a digital camera and its visual simplicity is part of its aesthetic appeal.

Beautiful shots! I took a 28mm and 50mm with my Pentax MX for a year in Europe in 1980. Probably the most fun I’ve ever had with a camera. I guess no viewfinder would be a show stopper for me, though.

    • @sexysilversurfer

There is a viewfinder but it is an optical one so you can’t review photos you have already taken in bright light.

I love those photos! The light there is magical, as is the architecture. I have the M11 as well. I suspect your finicky charging experience was due to the cable. One reason for the high cost of some Leica batteries (SL and Q series as well as the M11) is that they are and have to be bespoke because they act as part of the weather sealed bottom plates. As for dual card slots, I doubt there is room for a second slot. If you look at an exploded diagram, you’ll notice that compact body is absolutely crammed full of electronics and the rangefinder.

A suggestion on the screen protector... Amazon cheap made in china 3 pack for 15 Canadian dollars, that's like a pound and a half. I've had no bubbles or issues with them. The screen does need to be excessively clean to have no bubbles though (like all screen protectors).
