Finding Inspiration (Not Envy) On Strava

  • As a runner, I find myself regularly on Strava, sharing my journey and following other runners and athletes. But recently, I've found myself falling into the hole of comparing myself with other runners. I really resonate with the line "Comparison is the thief of joy" and so I've recently been trying to change my relationship with Strava to use it as a source of running inspiration and running motivation.

    Interesting timing James!! Yeah now I'm LOVING being a part of my local running club (thanks to you James who motivated and encouraged me to do that) they literally harangue me to join Strava ... I dunno, the whole idea just puts me off 'cause I run for ME, just for joy and happiness, and I don't want to have any thoughts in the back of my head about how I look to others, whether that's positive or negative! I've always recorded all my training on Runkeeper, and I'm kinda emotionally attached to that app, it changed my life!! Anyway I joined Strava so I can keep up with the club a bit and I uploaded my last marathon that I was so so so proud of, a huge unexpected 3h37min, a 24min PB!! But so far that's as far as I've gone.🤷🏻‍♀🤷🏻‍♀

      Amazing Bev. So glad you're enjoying being in the club! Feel like more people should join their local club. I definitely waited too long!
      Totally get that perspective. I totally get why people wouldn't want strava but it can be great.
      Congrats on the marathon PB! 3:37 is an amazing time! You've made huge progress over the last few years!

      @@jamesday1 Yes THANKS so much James I have indeed come a long way ... consistency!!! A lot of volume too, but it's really down to consistency!!! And, I really thank you James for your encouragement to join the club because not only it's a lot of fun, and also the people are just lovely, but of course it's quite amazing how much more we do with the group and others around us!! Plus I now do 2 or 3 double days per week thanks to the club!! AND I get lots and lots of encouragement and congratulations from the club members too when I do races, which is highly motivating to say the least!! 😁😆💪🏻🏃🏻‍♀💪🏻🙋🏻‍♀

    I removed the social media apps from my phone and embraced moments of boredom. But I kept Strava.
    However, I was comparing, too. I muted most of my feed, but only for close friends. But mainly, it affected my training; I’d find myself running a long distance and thinking how impressive it would be on Strava (which is not my motivation), or I would be disappointed with my average pace, even though it included warm and cool down. To solve this, I’ve hidden my activity and will only selectively share runs when I’ve done them with other people, as those are fun memories. But mostly I enjoy training in private for the time being.

    I ended up disconnecting Strava from my garmin. I found I was doing routes for the segment wins. The comparison was also a big one for me. I'm enjoying my running a lot more now

      I've definitely considered that at times. Nice to hear that it's made running more enjoyable for you. That's the important thing.

    I really miss Strava seeing what my running friends are doing but not looking at Strava has been liberating for me. Now I often run and don't turn on my Garmin or just delete the run. Much happier now.
    When I do meet up with my running friends it's great catching up, human to human interaction much better. Cheers

    • @jamesday1
      @jamesday1  Před 6 měsíci

      Totally get that. Quite a few of my friends at the running club have done the exact same thing and I still see their race results and talk to them at training about their training. I don't think I've seen anyone come back to strava after making that decision so it must be working for them!

    I've always compared my pace to others, but recently I've decided I want to run further rather than faster, I've signed up to endure24 as a solo and running slower means I'm enjoying running much more than when I was always chasing speed pb's. I'd like to run more marathons and ultras (only done 1 marathon to date)

    • @jamesday1
      @jamesday1  Před 6 měsíci +1

      I definitely think it's hard to avoid when doing shorter distances. You'll be amazed at how different the atmosphere is during ultras. Everyone runs along chatting with strangers. Aid stations are full of people standing around just enjoying themselves. Good luck at Endure24. I'm sure you'll love it.

    Great reframing James and another super video! Would love to see the notion template youre using?

    • @jamesday1
      @jamesday1  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Thanks Neil! I've been creating the layout myself but I'll maybe turn it into a template at some point if I get to the point where it's useful. I'm using zapier to pull over the data from strava into a notion database which works surprisingly well.

    I’ve fallen foul of comparing myself to others on Strava when it comes to club races. I know a club mate or rival is taking part in the next race, so i stalk their Strava and try and work out what pace / time they are likely to do and then try to run quicker than that. And inevitably because I wasn’t concentrating on myself. My own training and own tactics I’d have a shocker and perform badly. I’ve learned the hard way to do what works for me, and control the controllables on race day.

    • @jamesday1
      @jamesday1  Před 6 měsíci +1

      It's far too easy to fall into that trap. I've definitely experienced that myself. And having the right mindset in a race is super important for performance.

    My interest in Strava goes up and down depending on how I'm doing. If I'm injured or not running, I barely look at it. When I'm doing well, I'm checking it daily. It's funny how it works that way.

    • @jamesday1
      @jamesday1  Před 6 měsíci

      I'm completely the same! I'm just recovering from a small injury and whilst I stopped running, I barely looked at strava.
