      LOL!! I remember starting a thread once about why the hell did they call their company PORN and dunwoody, were the owners Mr Porn and Mr Dunwoody!? LOL. VERY strange decision!!

      Mr Porn & Mr Dunwoody did indeed start the company, i am informed that Mr Porn was eastern european in origin.

      Marcel Porn was born in Romania in 1884, in 1905 was appointed chief engineer at Petrolifier (19 yrs old) after the 1914-18 war he came to England and started his own business manufacturing lifts and diesel engines. In 1927 the company became Porn & Dunwoody, he died in 1949.

    @mrdummy_nl Před 7 lety +24

    "PORN" company? Oke in old times is not a problem because there is very low or no internet. Today it's bad idea to use "PORN" as company name. :)
    Nice tour btw. Little sad it's modernized.

    • @morthren

      mrdummy Porn and Dunwoody still exists but are now called PDERS and owned by Otis. They dropped the Porn from their name

      Good job they didn't do it the other way round and drop Dunwoody from the name instead (PORN LIFTS would attract a different type of passenger!!)

    I found an old beauty today at the odeon Leeds! An express lift! It had rattles and bangs and it took ages to level! I thaught I was stuck, it takes so long to level. Non modernised ether!

    Those type of winding wheels can be dangerous,There was instances of Fire Brigade Not removing them,When the Lift was eventually switched on by the Lift engineer,The wheel smashed around the motoroom, Of course he should have checked,but unfortunately he didn’t.Now winding wheels are mechanically fixed,in most motorooms.

    I think there are more old lifts around than people think. Yesterday I was walking around the Holborn area of London and happened to peer into a few doorways - I found 2 unmodernised Expresses from the 1980's and a gated lift, as well as an unusual little lift with yellow doors - sadly this one had been modernised.

    • @upanddownadventures
      @upanddownadventures Před 2 měsíci

      In residential or office buildings? I wouldn't be surprised if a fair number of old lifts survive in London (among the many more modernized lifts).

    I had bit of luck jesterday. I was inspecting a building with my boss for some structural modifications to a building form 1993. I knew the building had a lift by looking at the floor plans and to my luck it was on Otis europa 2000 in original condition. I had short ride in it and the video will be up in a few weeks (I have quite a backlog). The interiour is covered with plywood to protect is from damaging as it is beeing used by the builders for transport purposes.

    You can't judge a controller off the smoothness alone. I have seen late-model relay logic controlling modern smooth ac drives. In one odd case, a truly modern flux vector unit, and in several others, two-speed ac with solid state torque control.

    Motors never lie, it was PORN !!!!!. Nice vid and hats off on the effort for doing the visit ... the PROPER way. Teha, the dude wasnt too interested and a bit in a hurry, but just probably he is getting a bit in trouble if something happens to you in the building. We kind of the landlords to let you visit and film. Shame it upgraded the controller. But at least the machinery and fixtures still original.

  • @Lynxfan2
    @Lynxfan2 Před 7 lety

    At least the guy let you in the motor room, film the motor from different angles and also record the motor in action, so it is not all bad :-)
    What happened to the Express Lift at the beginning of the video? Do you return to that lift in a later video?

    • @mrmattandmrchay
      @mrmattandmrchay  Před 7 lety

      I want to have a look at that Express, perhaps I'll try and find out who to contact to do that. I'm always a little embarrassed walking into places and say "you know the lift in your back stairwell..." , but sometimes it has to be done!!
      The guys actually went out somewhere to turn off the alarm on the roof door. If he'd done it before we came up then I'd have no time at all and the video would have really sucked!!

    Is asbestos used in lift brake shoes and clutches?

    • @peterlomas984
      @peterlomas984 Před 7 lety

      No , and any that had would have been taken out of service and the brake or clutch components replaced with a composite material.

    • @tomjardine100
      @tomjardine100 Před 7 lety

      Peter Lomas I see, I am sure some lift shafts have asbestos insulating board in them?

    • @peterlomas984
      @peterlomas984 Před 7 lety

      They have , but all lift shafts will have had a full asbestos survey carried out. Any exposed asbestos will have been removed under controlled conditions or if the asbestos is still stable i.e not flaky it will be sealed with an approved sealant by a registered contractor and this is then entered into the asbestos register of the building owners, it is then checked at regular intervals for signs of deterioration.

    • @tomjardine100
      @tomjardine100 Před 7 lety

      Peter Lomas thanks Do you know if 1990s buildings will have asbestos in them?

    • @peterlomas984
      @peterlomas984 Před 7 lety

      I would not be able to say for certain , if you think you may have some in a building you can get it surveyed by a registered contractor. A lot of stuff looks just like asbestos sheeting but is usually a quite innocent material. If in doubt get it checked.
