I've been an Elvis fan since 1956 when he became an international superstar. Keep in mind back then we didn't have internet or music videos. The majority of us never had the opportunity to see him perform live. And the only way to see his movies was to go to a theater. We had radio, records, magazines and an occasional tv appearance. Younger people wonder if we knew at the time how extraordinary he was. YES WE DID!!

Woow!!! If most of today's super star singers and musicians were to be thrown back to those days, they will find it hard to have an appearance cos they depend heavily on gimmicks in various forms. Woow!!! More or less back then, it was true talent or no stage.

Beside your great musical knowledge, you are absolutely right.....he was going through a lot during this time in 1973. His wife left him and took his beloved little daughter with her. This concert took place in January '73, and the divorce in October '73.
He always was a great storyteller and i feel a certain kind of anger in his voice. Today we know that he didn't climb this mountain anymore.
    He died four years later.
Some say because of a broken heart......💔
Thanks so much for your professional explanation and insight to this great performance!

This is a great song written and performed by Marty Robbins but compare the 2 performances and Elvis has a pathos in his voice that just grabs your heart strings. A very autobiographical song as to what he was going through in his life but also has an anthemic quality. He did more and more really heart wrenching songs as he moved towards the end of his life and did not enjoy singing the frivolous tracks from his early career. His voice just became so big!! Thank you for wonderful observations.

I've recently become addicted to the version of "Danny Boy" that Elvis recorded in 1976 at the request of his father. If you haven't heard it and would like to, you can find it under Elvis Presley - Danny Boy (New 2020 Enhanced Remastered Version). There's also a home recording from 1959 if you wish to compare the two. I heard a band member say that when Elvis chose a new song he would first spend time alone with it to engrain it into him before they would start rehearsing it. Personally, I don't think every emotional song Elvis sang was about his life. I just think he had such overwhelming empathy for all people that his passion was real. He also said The Sweet Inspirations brought out the soul in him. I assume you're continuing to discover more Elvis songs. Enjoy!!

@@christineokosun This will be long but hopefully will give you a little more insight into Elvis's life and some new songs to explore. I can only guess at why Elvis's dad (Vernon) asked him to record "Danny Boy". It was a very familiar song in the U.S. when I was growing up, so it could have been one of Vernon's favorites. I know Elvis had sung it for many years because there's a home recording of it. When he was stationed in Germany in 1958-60 he rented a house for his dad, his grandma & himself off base. He had a piano and his guitar and practiced singing whenever he got a chance. To hear it search: Elvis Presley Danny Boy private recorded (3:36). He was 24 when this was made. He never recorded this as a single, so maybe they they were looking for suggestions for the album that was being made in 1976. Vernon had been struggling with heart problems for a couple years so he may have been thinking about his own mortality when he made this request. NEW SUBJECT: If you haven't seen these, I think you would really enjoy them: (1) Elvis: Return to Tupelo (this details Elvis's life from birth through the beginning of his career); (2) Elvis Presley - The King of kindness; (3) Bruno Kirby Story: 'The Magic of Elvis Presley'; (4) 200 CADILLACS (Elvis Presley). And finally SOME SONGS: In December of 1956 four young rising stars just happened to come together at the small recording studio where they had all recorded separately. Elvis was 21 years old at the time. They had a spontaneous jam session for a few hours, and the owner recorded them. A reporter nicknamed them The Million Dollar Quartet because he thought that's what their combined earnings would total in a year. If you search The Million Dollar Quartet and then type in each song separately you'll find my favorites: Down By The Riverside; Just A Little Talk With Jesus; Jesus Walked That Lonesome Valley (extra verse); When The Saints Go Marchin' In; Softly and Tenderly. SOME GOSPEL SONGS: (1) Elvis Presley - Let Us Pray (3:04) (this is a movie clip); (2) In the Garden; (3) He Is My Everything; (4) The stamps (Elvis) sweet sweet spirit. mp4 (2:56); (5) So High (Extended Version) (1966) (3:00); (6) "I believe" - Elvis Presley (2:08); (7) Elvis Presley. - Lighthouse - Lead Me Guide Me - Bosom of Abraham (3:45) (this is one of those informal times Elvis and his group shared); (8) Reach Out To Jesus; (9) Elvis Presley - I Believe in the Man in the Sky (with lyrics) (2:11); (10) only believe -- Elvis Presley (2:59); (11) Gospel Production Number ('68 Comeback Special) (8:51). I got a little carried away, but it's so easy to do when it comes to Elvis. After you've had a chance to check out some or all of these, I'd love it if you would let me know what your favorites are. Enjoy and have a wonderful 2022!

Elvis had many illness. He died the old fashioned way..a heart attack, same as both parents. He had had at least two prior. Again, Elvis was not an unhappy man
Go to Globetrotting with Trey channel for an interview with Sallt Hoedel on her book Destined to Die Young.
He, like all of us, had ups and downs and like us, he got over them.He was upbeat when he died, looking forward to his tour and the career changes he had already set in motion. For example Wembley in the UK was already scheduled for an appearance.. So many fans make false assumptions about him and they get theur impressions from salacious books of fabrications..sourced mainly by the book told by Red and Sonny West and ghost written by a Natuonal Enquirer writer.Since when is the Enquurer credible and factual?Oh, I get it. Only when they mainly fabricate against Elvis..and to think this book is used as the main references in hundreds of other books. And many fans chose to believe the lies and the worst about him.Elvis was private person for a reason..those reasons were all the lies told about him.
    he was looking forward..not backward.

Anyone who chooses to believe a lie is not truly a fan.

We all have mountains to climb. This shows he was human just like us. Loved him for it.
