Interesting. I never knew that about the scale tool. I've always edited the pattern to change the size but using the scale tool is faster. The scale tool is one of those tools that I practically never used.
This is a wonderful tutorial for me as I never learned how to coloring in illustrator even though it was quite simple. Very helpful well done and many thanks :)

Please help. My flats have a big unfilled gap in the middle when I try to fill it in with a pattern or solid color. I’m not sure what the problem is ?
Most likely, you don't have one whole shape but 2 shapes. You need to "join" the shapes into one complete, closed shape to fill with color.
