  • I show you step by step how to make a vegan dehydrated backpacking meal from scratch.
    There is no need to follow a recipe, just follow these guidelines. A grain (pasta, brown rice, quinoa, etc), and bean (any variety), and veggies (brocolli, peppers, onions all de/rehydrate well).
    Add plenty of oils and spices to boost flavor and caloric density.

    I started dehydrating food for bike trips last year...it works great!! One word of caution dont leave bags of dehydrated food in a bag in your closet...put it in a sealed bucket or something as the mice spent all winter eating mine...lol

    Easier way to measure out the dried product, if your scale works like mine - zero out the bowl of food using the tare button and then scoop enough food into the baggie so that you're at -4 ounces, hit tare again and repeat.
    Helpful video! I look forward to making my own backpacking meals 😊

    Nice! THank you so much for posting this, it is very helpful. How do you think scrambled tofu would dehydrate?

      I really can't say. I've more or less have cut tofu out of my diet, but my guess is it'd be just fine. Only one way to find out.

    A truly inspirational video. But, I would request you tell us what spices you are using. It would be particularly helpful to us non-vegans or we vegan-wanna-be's,

      I can't possibly remember what combination I used when I made this video. The point I make is to just be bold and experiment. The only time I've gone wrong with spices is adding too much salt.

    How do you know how much water to add to the meal? I’ve never done this and am about to go on a backpacking trip.

      Just get fill up the Talenti Cup all the way about 2 hours before you want to eat.

    How long do these meals last on the shelf? Or how long do you think they will last?

    • @davebraunlich
      @davebraunlich  Před 2 lety

      I have had some in storage for over a year and it's always been good. I imagine they'll last a long time if you get a good vacuum seal. I just store them in a Thermarest bag in my closet.

    Thanks for not showing the rehydrating process and amount of water to add, proud to be the first thumbs down...

      lol ok.
      To answer your question, I just fill up the Talenti Cup when I'm cold soaking with water a little below full.
      With a stove I use maybe 2/5 of a liter. I don't really measure. You can always add more water in and if you add too much it's a little soupy, but still good.
