    I've been drying food for thirty + years. I use 93% hamburger and I have never rinsed it, not ever. My canoe trips are usually 3 weeks and I have never had a meal go bad. Pretty much all my dinners have burger or shredded roast. Frozen vegetables are already blanched, they can go right on the trays. Thank you, lots of good tips and best of luck with your recipes.

    Try Rain County regarding dehydration, she is vacuum sealing mason jars with meat and fat, she has 7 year old Elk. I am going to start dehydrating eggs, our happy chickens are gifting us. You have great ideas for backpacking making good quality food to take with you.

    Great video, I’m really considering getting a dehydrator before like you said mountain houses are expensive. I’ve been buying the #10 cans of them and splitting them up to make it cheaper.

    To avoid strong smells inside the house...I dehydrate in my garage. The last time I dehydrated garlic & onions. My neighbors thought I was make homemade spaghetti sauce outside. 😂. I love vac sealing. I literally use it even with cold cuts. I have vac sealed speciality cheeses that are more than 6 months old. When reopened, they taste as fresh as the 1st day. 👌🏼 One think I might suggest. I put any seasoning/spices/herbs in a separate vac seal bag enclosed in the bigger bag of vac seal dinner.

    Thank you for all your tips and tricks. I would have done 90% of the mistakes... I've only had my dehydrator for a few weeks, but nothing goes bad in my house anymore and I'm eating so much better with dehydrated fruits and jerky for work instead of the horrible "snacks" I used to bring. Your "Buffalo Chicken" video is in my recommended to watch, so I'll see about that now! Thanks again.

    It's very easy to skip one quite cumbersome and time consuming step by buying ready-made, freeze-dried (but already cooked) herbs, such as onions, garlic, spring onions, parsley etc .. They are also super cheap. I always buy something like this in a 500 gram glass for 99 ct. I can make 6 to 8 servings with one glass, depending on the dish.

    Just got a dehydrator for Christmas and have already made your Hungarian Goulash, Great!
    I love making my own meals with it, and I will continue to do so, but I'm not sure I agree with your assessment that it only costs a few dollars a meal? While that may be true for buying ingredients I wonder if you have taken into the account the cost of running the dehydrator?
    I have not figured it out myself but to me it is almost like running an electric heater for 10-12 hours straight, and my guess is the consumption of electricity has to be pretty high.

    I am on a Keto diet so I dehydrate all of my backpacking meals. The buffalo chicken is great, chili, pasta meat sauce, zucchini and any other left overs that are Keto friendly. I do add olive oil, butter, powdered sour cream and powdered heavy whipping cream to a lot of meals to increase the fat. You also cannot beat homemade beef jerky.
    I was around a lot of jealous hikers on the AT when they saw my dehydrated BACON.
    Eat well on the trail, dehydrate.

    • @StacieDude
      @StacieDude Před 5 lety +1

      Hi! Good question. You have brought up the $64,000 question. Chef Glenn McAllister (the Backpacking Chef, wrote Recipes for Adventure) dehydrates most of his Ingredients separately and then combines them to make up his meal packets. Linda Fredrick Chaffee (High Trail Cookery, the Backpack Gourmet) cooks entire meals and then dehydrates them. We have done both methods and it depends on what you are making. I like the precooked then dehydrated method for most our meals because I believe it allows the flavors to marry better. 9/2014 my wife made and dehydrated all the meals for 12 people, on a 10 day canoe trip, totaling less than 100 lbs. Some of my favorite meals were: Turkey Tetrazini; Spaghetti with meat sauce, garlic bread, peas and no-bake cherry cheesecake; Humus; salsa; trail pizza on crackers; Hopping John; fruit porridge (canned pie filling in couscous) and my personal favorite Corned Beef and Cabbage.
