- We're finally building our own NAS / media server, and we're using Unraid with ZFS to do it. This first part is all about the hardware. Wendell from Level1Techs is helping.

In this video, we'll be assembling our own DIY server. We're using the following parts for this build:
ASRock Rack X470D4U2-2T AM4 Motherboard w/ IPMI (Amazon): geni.us/cqFS
AMD Ryzen R5 3600 (Amazon): geni.us/XMMNrW
SilverStone CS381 (Amazon): geni.us/1fqCikA
Cryorig C7 cooler (Amazon): geni.us/Dp35EL
AMD RX 5700 (Amazon): geni.us/YHAbFc
Old NetApp disk shelf
This two-part series will offer a loose guide to how you might go about building your own NAS for a DIY solution. We're using ZFS on Unraid for our DIY NAS, but this part focuses on the hardware and build. A major aspect of our build is a board with IPMI support so that we can remotely manage and boot (even from an off state!) the server, useful for business environments. You could also apply these basic steps to home theater and HTPC builds, where a home media server might be the end goal. For us, a small business file storage server was our goal, and so we called in help from Wendell at L1T. The build also uses an older NetApp Disk Shelf to give us expansion possibilities up to 32 drives, + additional SSDs. One of our other benefits is easy addition of Steam Cache to accelerate game downloads after the first download of a game.

Great Stuff.
Finaly ZFS for the Win. No more script based compression...💪👌
i wonder if you guys go with iscsi or the more...slow a.f. nfs version....
@wendel have you encountered iSER aka. RDMA via ISCSI?
Nailed the intro, that's how you summon socks and sandles 👍🤣
I agree with Wendell most people do not need over 100tb
YES! Do the software side of things!!! Also love the Star Trek references.
I'm sure this was the Excelsior Warp Sound Wendel was referring to: czcams.com/video/mkJ3--2K7yo/video.htmlm03s
PS: i always name my gaming PCs DEEP-SPACE-BLUE / DEEP-SPACE-RED (depending on the LED color), but since RGB i do call it DEEP-SPACE-ZERO
i'm legit dying at the linus joke at the beginning.

Best. Intro. Ever.
"No not him" floored me
That jab at Linus in the intro was fantastic. I always enjoy the fact that a lot of the tech you-tubers (Gamers Nexus, Jay, Linus, Kyle etc) are in business sense competitors, yet they do a ton of joint projects, and support each other. Just refreshing imo.
everyone stepping in for Hardware Unboxed was pretty wholesome too
and 3 years later they are all admittingly friends.
It's really not competition. They arent competing for your money like say plumbers compete for your bathroom remodel.
You can watch one youtuber and then watch the other after and it cost you nothing. "Competition" in their job is nothing like in orher fields
OOOOH BOY THO
OP's comment aged well. Or like milk, depending on how you look at it. 😅
something i don't get about the "not him" part of the intro... if you didn't want linus, then why drop all the cpus? that was clearly the summoning for Linus Drop Tips Sebastian
Kind of like how you can't hold your hand above superheated steam, or dip into the boiling liquid of a cauldron, one must be careful to not touch or get too close to a CPU pentagram with unprotected skin. The consequences are rumored to be dire.
They didn't understand what they were summoning.

Satanic summoning of stuff. Hilarious

"How can we take something that Linus can do and make it so regular people can do it?"

Wendell: "what im wearing?"
Linus: "LTTstore.com"😎
I was hoping Wendell was going to say it, then wonder why he said it. :D
That intro was PERFECT
oof
"I always traveil by telecom rack" gets me every time !
Oscar winning acting right there
Steve: "I have some server parts."
Wendell: "Oooooh!"
that's how i sound when i find even more proprietary server parts i cant ever use
Weirdly enough, this might be one of my favorite GN videos. A lot of good information sprinkled throughout and the Wendell - Steve combo is fantastic

Quick Occult Fact: The circle surrounding your pentagram is a circle of binding. So if you did accidentally call up Linus, he would be contained within the circle. Destroying your circle in an attempt to stop the ritual would only set Linus free to roam about the GN office.
Ever since Wendell mentioned ZFS, I've been reading about it compared to other file systems and volume managers. This is stuff that was dry in college but exciting once you can apply it in real life
I find it fascinating on how boring school can make a topic. It’s impressive
ZFS is just AWESOME. Designed to protect your data as much as possible but still giving very good performance (provided you set it up properly).
When CZcamsrs have storage problems they call Linus, when tech CZcamsrs have storage problems they call Wendell.
Yes, Wendell have better knowledge
I mean even Linus brought on Wendell several times that definitely true LUL
So MKBHD is not a tech CZcamsr?

Do not forget the server parts when calling Wendell through your telecom rack. Not that he'll use them, it's a sacred gift your must give if you want him to help you. The more advanced the parts you sacrifice, the better the server will be.
I love how excited Wendell gets talking about computers! This looks like an awesome project.
This really puts in perspective how insane Linus's Petabyte project was.
and as of a few weeks ago, he needed to call in a specialist to get more storage, because, IT'S NEARLY FULL!!!

Thank you guys for this. I'm somewhere in between the groups here. I'm in the enterprise IT world with a lab at home that needs some love. This video helps me review and get back to it. Thank you to both teams.
One of the most epic introductions, it was a great laugh, and really nice to see the collab between the two of you. Hope to see more collabs between you and Level1 in the future. Interesting server build.
I absolutely freaked when Wendell sat the disk shelf on top of the 2U server rack of my dreams. I will definitely have nightmares.
i nearly died from hart failure.
I do have a bad heart. My PaceMaker - *(Ark Reactor) did not fire. But all I was thinking. The *Linus Tech tips intro. Please don't drop it...
To my experience, that is the normal way to treat servers out of the rack.
@@barongerhardt Yep. No problems whatsoever. Perfectly common for datacenter.
Yeap completely normal, we stack like dual DL385 G10 on top of each other since nothing will happen. These machines are sturdy

Oh man that intro had me in stitches. Thanks you have no idea how much i needed that.
Thanks for the video, love these videos. Specialy from tech i cant really get myself (or afford).
It's great seeing Wendall on your show Steve. I built a dual xeon server with an ASRock RACK motherboard and used to watch Wendall's videos on setting up a NAS server, configuring users and groups, setting up iSCSI, NFS, and SMB shares. What an experience. I was fascinated with the 14 onboard SATA ports (several of which were SATAII and not SATAIII). Now using SAS drives on both an internal LSI controller for my two 8 drive vdevs in my Pool, and an external LSI controller with an Expander for my 24 bay JBOD. Look at how fast things are changing... Love the show.
Well then... this is mildly disturbing and hilarious while being a very well made video.

Nah, Wendell is actually Sulley from Monsters Inc. He's a good guy ;-)
Wow, this is so funny and incredible. The opening was a shocker. Gosh, I love your channel so much more now. Kudos !!!
Man, that Linus joke at the beginning was amazing, thumbs up for that alone (sorry Linus, we still love you)

You know when someone works enterprise when you swing your gear around like Wendell , only experience let’s you be that confident
Love Wendell.. maybe the only pc guy that can make Steve's eyes cloud over with tech talk..lol love that Silverstone case
Wendell and Anthony operate on a whole different level to the rest of the tech CZcams space. Wendell presumably because he’s an actual IT consultant who happens to make excellent videos, and Anthony because he is The Chosen One so of course he knows his stuff
That was an amazing intro. "What am I wearing?!" I friggin' love you guys.

all we need to do is exhume body parts, yeet it at linus, and boom
0:29
the "what am i wearing" with the LTT hoodie was a nice touch.
Now im expecting part 2 to have another Linus intro where he comes back to haunt GN because they didn't call out LTTstore.com.
I'm honestly starting to get really sick of them randomly shilling LTTstore in the middle of videos for no other reason than to shill LTTstore. They should do what GN does: "buy" ad spots from themselves and keep the ad in the ad portion of the video. It's also okay to do it mid video when, for example, GN does a video card teardown and mentions you can buy the mat he's working on. Those are at least relevant. Linus interrupting random videos to tell me to buy a hoodie is straight up bullshit.
@@mjc0961I though I was the only one since I never saw anyone else mention it, but I had to unsubscribe because of that exact same problem. That method of self promotion is just so contrived and corny, even more so when he gets his employees to do it.
@@mjc0961 I think he picked it up from Louis though.

Have Wendell on more he is a good dude and has a good channel also. Love enterprise equipment, always so over kill.
Hands down most badass intro ever on a tech video. The bar has been set.
This gave me some cool ideas for my home server. I've been considering an upgrade from my old Phenom II for some time now, but I like this board because it has the option to automatically power back on after a power failure. Since my Nextcloud and several services we use a lot run on it, it has been nice on the rare occasion that the power has gone off long enough for the UPS to die, that when power was restored and the UPS came back on, the server just turned itself back on automatically.

why would they not JBOD it? The standard for this type of operation is zfs for software raid, and glusterfs nodes if scaling with multiple disk shelves
@@borisyeltsin6606 the branded shelves have optimized firmware to work with the vendor software. they work better with the software they are optimized for and tend to cause some "undesirable behaviors" if you swap the disks for off the shelf it's slightly better but you have to watch the modules too.
