  • Another day, another thrifting adventure! Join me as I showcase my latest haul of arty thrift store finds. Namely, colored pencils (or "pencil crayons" as we call them here in Canada). I found a ton of vintage colored pencils of the Eagle and Berol brand names (now known as Prismacolor), along with some Venus and Laurentien pencils (now known as Faber Castell).
    I went thrifting around Value Village, Salvation Army, and some local charity shops. Enjoy diving into this pile of Canadianas, Verathins, and old-timey Prismacolors with me ^^

    Use the pencils. They don't have lead in them, just pigment, wax or oil based. I collect vintage art supplies and stumbled upon a bag of Venus Paradise , a few Berol prismacolor, and random other Faber castell at a Restore shop. I ve Yet to find Caran d'ache. Lucky you, enjoy!!!! The Venus Paradise pencils are fun to work with. I agree too about using thrifted art supplies....I have soft and oil pastels, India inks, prismapastel pencils, vintage art papers, charcoal, brushes, and occasionally a few watercolor paints thrifted.

      Haha yes, I feel silly for thinking the pencils were dangerous! There still sitting in evidence bags in my drawer 😂 I'll give them a proper spot and use them well.
      Ohh an entire bag of Venus pencils? That's a great find! I rarely come across them in bulk. Just one or two in assorted bags. I'm glad you agree that it's important to use the supplies we have! I put a small bag of assorted vintage watercolor tubes down yesterday. Honestly, it took a lot haha. But I already found the set of tubed Cotmans recently. So walked away and saved them for someone else to find. It can really be a test of willpower, huh? 😵‍💫😅

    Never ever have I seen art supplies in our charity shops in the UK, loved your art work

      Oh wow, really? Never?
      Here in Vancouver, Canada, even the small thrift shops have a little corner designated to craft items. In massive thrift stores, there are ALWAYS art supplies. Though it does make me sad to see the never-ending inventory of second-hand stuff these stores have. Being honest, I kind of wish it was harder to find things at thrift shops 😅 It's a bit embarrassing how we live in North America. It sounds like the UK is doing charity shops right.

    I am also a vintage pencil crayon fanatic, and just love thrifting them. I am a Canadian watercolour artist, and also have a pair of budgies who chatter on my videos. It was fun to find you!

      Ahhh no way!! Fellow Canadian art supply thrifter- what an obscure category we fall into haha. Where in Canada are you? Aw I love my birds. They're just white noise when you live with them, aren't they? I'll start recording a voiceover without even realizing they're in the background until a few minutes in 😂

    Hello, I really enjoy your channel. I love that you repurposed old art supplies. I enjoy seeing items I enjoyed as a child. Thanks for sharing your treasures.

      Hi Jackie 👋🏼 Thank you so much for watching. I'm glad you enjoyed this video and that it hit a cord of nostalgia. I have to say, thrifted supplies feel a lot more special than buying anything brand new. There's just always a story behind the items!

    I think you should start an archive. It would be so much fun. We could all add info that we know😂

    • @JuliRoxArt
      @JuliRoxArt  Před 4 měsíci

      Haha perhaps! I hardly have any knowledge on vintage supplies. I just learn as I find some. We're a small group- us who enjoy finding vintage supplies. I'm not sure how useful an archive would be with just a handful of folks contributing 🤔 But maybe in the future, if there's interest

    Just found your channel....I love finding vintage art supplies in thrift stores, especially pencil crayons...I'm actively looking for a set of Laurentiens...i had a large set as a school kid back in the dark ages 😅..I'm a fellow Canadian, in the Fraser Valley. Love the idea of an art supply archive! How great would that be!?

    • @JuliRoxArt
      @JuliRoxArt  Před 5 měsíci +2

      Ahh a fellow Canadian!! And one who enjoys thrifting for art supplies 🤗 Laurentiens are becoming harder to come by. An entire set, especially. Usually, I find a handful of them mixed up in bags, but not on their own. I'll keep an eye out for you 😋 What are some of the coolest supplies you've found at thrift stores? Do you prefer big box shops or local charity shops? I'm visiting Victoria now and am planning to drop by Value Village later today. I'll keep you posted if I find any treasures!

      I just finished shopping at Value Village and Salvation Army in the downtown Victoria area. I must say, the Value Village here has a great art section! I didn't end up buying anything, but it was fun to peruse the aisles. No Laurentiens, unfortunately. But I'll keep an eye out!

      @@JuliRoxArt that is wonderful! I like going to local thrift shops here and scoping out what they have. I've found a few of those Canadiana pencil crayons and some soft pastels, which I have no experience with but have always wanted to learn...I also find a lot of dried up markers, which I don't buy! Lol..also lots of crayons and Crayolas...which also don't come home with me! It's fun to keep looking though...you never know what you'll come across 😊

    • @JuliRoxArt

      @evaprokop6056 Evaprokop!! I found a TON of Laurentiens at a shop in the Mount Pleasant area. Next time you're in town, check it out. I don't think there'll be a shortage anytime soon. The place is called Urban Source, it has some second-hand and brand-new art supplies. There's a big bucket of pencil crayons, and you can fill a little paper bag up for $10 (or half the bag for $5). You'll have to dig through them, but there are plenty! I even saw some Eagle, Berol, and Venus in the mix. Though I didn't end up getting any. Good luck 😙

    JUST WRITE THE COMPANY!!
    I bought an old faber castell set with polychromos pencils,watercolor pencils,pastells and oil pastells in blue,red and yellow. I later found out through texting faber castell that they were used in the faber castell academie for art lessons...I was so happy what a treasure😊

    • @JuliRoxArt
      @JuliRoxArt  Před 5 měsíci

      Wow, that sounds awesome! It's great you were able to gather more information on your set. It can be so hard to do some digging... it's nice that Faber Castell was responsive! If only the manufactured year of a supply was in tiny text on its packaging. It would take the guesswork out of placing older supplies on a timeline. Too bad that's rare at best.
      Thanks for sharing!

    Nice video, I also like to look for art supplies when I am thrifting! I have some of the COLLEEN pencils and they are really nice to use and are a Japanese brand (though it seems they now manufacture them in Thailand), but the ones I have are 2 coloured (one on each end).

    • @JuliRoxArt
      @JuliRoxArt  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Ahh a fellow art-supply thrifter! Have you found anything cool? I haven't swatched all of the pencils yet. I only really played with the watercolor ones. I better go ahead and do that haha. Thanks for the intel on the COLLEEN pencils! I didn't know they were Japanese. It's really interesting to come across items from different places and decades, eh?
      Thanks for your comment!

      @@JuliRoxArt :) Haha yay to art supply thrifters ! My best find a few years ago was a vintage set of unused Derwent Artist colour pencils 36 (one was missing) packaged in a cardboard box for $3 AUD, this was before Derwent started to sell them in the metal tins I believe. I also have some older Cotman tubes like the ones in your video I purchased at a second-hand outdoor market. Hope you find some more art supplies to share, I enjoy your videos a lot :P

    It's mostly pigmented art supplies you need to worry about. The dustier, the more problematic, of course. Pastels would top that list, but it's an inherent issue with pigments in general.
    Cobalts, cadmium, or something like yellow chrome (lead chromate) are particularly bad.
    Of course, how much you worry about it is up to you. There's nothing new about it, and artists haven't been keeling over left and right.

    • @JuliRoxArt
      @JuliRoxArt  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Thanks for the tip! I was informed a few times that I don't need to worry about the pencils being toxic, since they were never actually made with lead. Do you happen to know when cobalts, cadmium, and other really toxic ingredients stopped being used in art supplies? I don't think I have anything older than the 50s (e.g. charcoal sticks). I was only concerned about potential lead in my supplies. Honestly, I didn't even think about all of the other stuff 🤔
      You're right though, if we were to count every single toxic thing we encounter just by living day-to-day, it would drive us mad! I guess I shouldn't be too worried. Artists have been doing fine for generations 😁

    Lead colored pencils is a misnomer. There is no lead in pencils be it graphite or wax/oil.
