- The black fire snake experiment - When the baking soda gets hot, it makes carbon dioxide gas. The pressure from this gas pushes the carbonate from the burning sugar out of the sand, producing the “black snakes”

Do you absolutely need the sand? I was thinking of doing this on my driveway; would it work there?
Couldn't get this to work. Only two differences: Our sand was wet, and we used charcoal-lighter lighting fluid, which may be different than Zippo. Ours just made tiny little "worms" that never grew more than about an inch. Ideas?
Use dry sand, and a different lighter fluid
wet sand is the problem; i think any accelerant should work.

The sand’s purpose I think is to evenly spread the heat out during the reaction. Doesn’t play any chemical part, but it’s something to place the fuel on top of.

I make a ratio for the baking soda and sugar 1:4, but the substance wont catch on fire. I need to repeteadly put it on fire. Is it because I didnt use sand or is it bcuz of sth else?
