85% of the reason I'm here is that as a mechanic, I love watching old-school transmission guys tear these things down like nothing, throw the parts in a big pile, and then build them back up knowing exactly where everything goes. Stellar work as always.
I'm a mechanic as well but I steer away from a trans rebuild lol.
James Keller agreed, I build my own but they are laid out the way it comes apart except my C4s I can build them in my sleep lol
absolutely
It blows my mind how quick he just tears thru it haha
@@young11984 because its a ford pos!! Lol jk
I opened a bottle of Dextron V and poured it on my hands to get a real feel for the video🤣

@@1911junkie You say tomatoes; I say potatoes 🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃
If you work on greasy, nasty stuff, that high detergent Dexron (no T) will clean the crap out of your hands and make them soft. It's hard to get the smell off, though. LOL
That fluid looked like a chocolate shake.
"All this stuff I'm telling you is real simple mistakes that you can make if you're doing this at home"
lol. Yeah, no f'ing way am I doing this at home.
First mistake would be even thinking about attempting to do this at home!
They didn’t have him, but now we do so if you’re going to work on your own watch this guy and learn all the ‘ right ‘ tricks.
The worst part is having to replace you living room carpet....again.
@@howardcon5126 all I did once was rebuild a pump assembly for a th400r4 and nearly had to replace the carpet in my apartment, found a really good cleaner that got out the fluid I spilt. I bought a couple containers more of it just in case they stopped making it.
Jon Storch very wise man👍🇦🇺
Trans engineering makes the internal combustion engine look like child's play!
Sure put a helluva lot of thought into solving the "inconvenience" of manual shifting.. Torque converters are insanely clever as well. Sometimes I wonder if some of these ideas came from space. I'da told the guy to stuff it if they asked me to make a car shift itself. I'da called him a lazy bastard too...
N here we are lol
Trans engineering looks like intergalactic travel compared to internal combustion engines 😳
Yep
The older ones aren’t terrible. Just get a good book and a bunch of sandwich bags for parts and a rebuild is doable for anyone that has mechanical aptitude. That being said when you get up to the 4+ speeds things get more complex in a hurry and this guy is very good at what he does.
I was thinking the same thing.
You can see just how good this guy is, he could probably build this blindfolded... impressive skills... 👍
This guy IS the real deal. Wish all transmission guys were this knowledgeable.
I would like to learn 1 on 1, how to rebuild transmissions from him.
I can do that with a turbo 350 I've done so many of them in the race car
When you been doing it as long as we have it wouldn’t be too hard to pull off. May make a good CZcams video. I might keep that in mind. Thanks.
I was gonna comment on the same thing! This guy does everything so smoothly that you feel confident about his skills.
This good ol boy knows what he's doing.
Every turn, flip and spin is done with purpose and max efficiency. It's like watching a master butcher cutting up an entire cow.
lol ya got that right !
Smooth
Watching the gear oil pour out, I had the same image. Astonishing to watch the efficiency/economy of movement. Exactly like a master butcher with some freshly honed knives. I'll fix almost anything, but that transmission isn't something I'd want to play with. Excellent video
Guys forgotten more than most will ever know , respect
I like to think of myself as a pretty mechanical guy but these automatic transmissions got so much going on. It would take many many years to be on this guy's level.
@@bigjay6743 Naw, if this was your daily job you'd pick it up pretty fast. It's the diagnostic skill that's the real art, that part takes time but with a guy this good teaching you you'd be a pro in no time, right? Right!
When I was young I used to play with old Chevy Powerglide transmissions and got to know all the parts pretty good but this transmission is 20 times more complicated.
I used to be space ship mechanic because I actually understood and was daring enough to attempt working on an automatic transmission while most people would just cross their eyes and make gurgling noises at the idea.
This guy is true ‘ space ship mechanic ‘
Jason Mercer o
I get what you're saying .. but I'm not sure guys like this actually forget anything!
The way he knows the little ins and outs of that transmission as though he designed the damn thing...he probably knows things like that about ALL of them...
I bow in humility.
I do too... but with every near master comes a con .... he probably doesn't know squat about cooking or computers .... or arts & crafts.....
be careful who you bow in humility to ..... you may have (know) something another does not. In which case, BOTH should bow in humility to each other ... rather just a one sided "I bow to your greatness on transmissions!!!!"
H'e a nerd, like me. I can do things he can't do. He can do things I can't do.
There's that equilibrium everyone keeps screaming about ... you know, the circle of life..... the trait that makes what we have a marketable item .... for sale....... for currency............
Finally? He'd wipe my ass clean out of this solar system when it comes to Transmissions.
No shit this man can truly call himself a master.
Bet he knows things about this unit that the team of engineers who designed it don’t know
If designed them they'd be bulletproof. He knows by now just about every way one of those units fails and could tell the designers a thing or two about making them better for sure.
Adding nitrous keeps a lot of people employed. lol
Capitalism! Ya can't beat it!
I prefer it in my lungs if @ all possible. Why waste N2O in an infernal combustion engine?!
Love me some dentists!...Mmmmm! Mmmmm! Mmmmm!...;)
This guy is a flat ProWizardScientist of deconstruction/construction/metallurgy! VERY cool to see! Thanks Mechaniacs!
Im mechanically inclined -BUT- much like a postal parcel getting from one end of the 'Erf to another, its a flat WONDER that all these interconnected pieces of steel do a choreographed dance that results in converting rotational energy to forward/reverse motion...
Love it when people build performance engines then seem to forget about all the things on down the line to the rear tires?
One of my favorite ‘ nitrous ‘ incidents was a tv show where these guys had to buy old used car and make it go 140mph and one guy put nitrous injection in his car and when he was going as fast as it would go ( about only 100 ) he hit the nitrous switch and it ......did nothing.
It's good for mechanics ... and dentists.
@@creightonleerose582 i think what you meant is internal combustion engine
I've been working on cars for 42 years and can say unequivocally that this is one of those guys that truly amazes me! He wreaks of experience, knowledge, and truth. Sadly, there's only a handful of them on this planet. Thank you awesome gentleman from Precision Transmission!!!
Our kids just arnt learning like this anymore.
@@mrt7814 His son Trent is learning a TON. 👍
@@mrt7814 It's not about not wanting to learn, it's about the school that doesn't learn a single thing. I have learned 4 years in technical school to recieve a paper that I am a car mechanic. Last year I went to college, this year I quit, because rather than learning shit to get paper, I started doing real things. And in last few weeks I have learned more, than I had in 4 and a half years in school.
It doesn't matter how long you have been ''learning'' in school, since only thing what matters is how much experience you have in real world.
Listening to someone who truly is at the top of his trade is amazing. If he were a doctor, Covid 19 would be a thing of the past.
Yeah he would stop the transmission
@@ashleyhansen3326 COVID be gone!
You mean the fake virus?
I love his autopsy table!
If you need a whole new case isn't it easier just to buy a crate transmission?
Anyhow great video
Now I understand why people say that Transmissions are voodoo wizardry.... Crazy Complicated!!
I can smell the burnt transmission fluid just watching this.
The knowledge displayed by this man is overwhelming. Every part of that transmission, every measurement, tolerance, range of modification and the resulting performance, all clearly explained. A+++++
and from memory. No manuals, not look it up on youtube to see how it's done...
Its crazy how relaxed he is, just throwing parts and pieces aside to continue digging deeper. I cant imagine how anybody could put something like this back together without forgetting anything.
Agree! Like kindergarten level "paint-by-number" I'd need kindergarten level "build-by-number" instructions just to avoid perpetual sleepless nights thinking I missed one tiny curcial step, part, update or special "trick" that would come back to haunt me ... to the tune of $1000s of dollars and the nightmare propsect of having to repeat the entire process over again.
After 2 aday its not that hard.
What took this guy 30 minutes would take me 10 years. Respect.
Me: “Have you ever taken apart a transmission before?” This guy: “Watch this and try and keep up.”
Yeah, I had to watch REAL close, that man knows his transmissions.
Have You got manual for this thing ? and he be like " I AM the manual"
more like...
Me: Do you know how to
This guy:(DrrDrrrDrrroooOo!) Ayne that's how you gettir done!
I could take a transmission apart that fast, but it wouldn't go back together.
Me: “Have you ever taken apart a transmission before?”
This guy: "Which Model...never mind - Yes!"
Amen. The concept “Blind Watchmaker” comes to mind. AT LEAST as many parts as a Rolex. I think the reason Aliens appear to people down South is that they’ve had a breakdown a zillion miles from home and know that a Southern mechanic can fix anything!
The Aliens took me up.... And asked if I could fix their warp drive. Had to stop by home depot for supplies, but we got er done
This guy is an artist! What a pleasure to watch him working. Love the way he just tosses everything aside, knowing full well he is on top of the rebuild.
I hope this gentleman makes MILLIONS every year
That second phone call could not have been timed more perfectly 😂 Eerie music just as you peak over to see the absolute train wreck in that case. Love yalls videos!
I thought it was edited in, crying in my beer old timey ragtime - it was perfect.
Yep, no need to say sorry. It was perfect timing.
Exactly what I thought lol
The music did not play just has he peeks over the case too see the absolute trainwreck. Lier.
Keep chugging along and these videos will absolutely pay for themselves, fellas.
This guy knows more about transmissions than I do about any topic.
The engineers that designed this were incredibly smart! You techs that work on them are equally impressive.
Man this guy knows his stuff! I'm impressed!
something tells me this isn't this guy's first time taking apart a transmission... i dunno- just a hunch.
I don't give a shift about transmissions. But there's something about watching you work on them . that's satisfying...
A master at his trade. I have torn down Mack, Fullers, and Spicer manuals. But gentleman knows his teade. My hat is off to you. We are losing this type of persons everyday, never to be replaced. Take a bow. God bless.
Love this guy he’ knows he’s stuff and hes a very humble man thanks for the vids
Watched the whole thing and saw no manual "Transmissions for Dummies" anywhere. I know nothing about transmissions but found this mechanic extremely entertaining and educational. Hope he passes even just a part of what he knows on to the next generation.
You remind me of my late uncle. He always threw everything into a pile and knew what every bolt went to when he put it back together. Accent included too.
This is the best skilled mechanic i have ever seen. I am sitting here wondering how this guy know so much about this mountain of metals.
4:38 You only want metal flake on the OUTSIDE of your car, in the paint. Don't let anyone sell you on this 'sparkle dex' fluid!! :-) thanks for another great video.
No, see, the thing is that the metal powder sits into the grooves and renews the bearing surfaces. The gas station guy himself told me.
Cherrish Brown metal color. I wanna car that color.
Him: "But honey, why does everything you cook tastes like transmission fluid?"
Me: “Have you ever taken apart a transmission before?” This guy: “Watch this and try and keep up.”
Truly, time is money for this man...
This is how you do a gearbox teardown on youtube !.....fully explained ... knowledge shared .... perfect 😁😁
It's a pleasure to watch someone who's clearly a master of their subject. Much respect.
FINALLY, a mechanic that knows what the HELL HE"S DOING. It would be interesting to know his 'background' and how long he's been wrenching, and WHERE.
There are some of us that are pretty sure what we’re doing, the problem is most of us don’t do it professionally, we do something else for a living and only work on a few here and there.
It's a family business and he been at it more than 40 years.
Just wanted to pop in and say thank you so much for making these videos. Your knowledge from decades of practical experience is so valuable and we're lucky that you're sharing it with us.
This guy knows his stuff, the folks that engineered /design transmissions are amazing as well
Very, very impressive. My dad was a truck mechanic that spent the end of his career rebuilding Allison truck automatic transmissions. His work station included a labeled board to set every piece he took out of the trans. Whoa be it to anyone that dared to pick up a piece off that board. Seeing this trans tear down gives me new respect for what my dad did on a daily basis.
Woe be it*?
Your Dad deserves many props for his experience.
I've rebuilt a handful of Allison transmissions, mostly old AT-540s. They're not simple by any means, but very much less complicated than the newer ones. I always used a version of his labelled board. Without it they would have quickly been just a pile of parts.
The phone is charming, don’t be sorry!
I can tell by your ring tone, you’re an old school kinda guy, humble, friendly, and helpful to those who need help in anything.
Carry on!
This is a classic case of " you're paying for the years, not the hours". Such a phenomenal knowledge of transmission.
This man was an automatic transmission in a past life.
That was some real carnage! Thanks for this one.
No joke-
I've watched EVERY video you guy's have uploaded in the past month...and I'm still looking foward to more.
(I'm embarrassed to say that, for some reason of another, I wasn't subscribed...so, I fixed that!)
That is the most practiced precision I've ever seen on a transmission. Just wow. Well done.
It's great watching someone tear one of these down so fast, especially when they can describe what everything does in the process.
This is like watching someone process a murder scene !
The red fluid didnt help, lol
Who killed the transmission? Film at eleven
It's an autopsy. What killed the transmission?
@@gorillaau I think it was the spanner in the drawing room.

@@ichoozjc Manual transmissions are much simpler.
Congratulations. Your detailed explainations are worthy of Merit. I did not appreciate the complexities of an auto transmission untiI watched you pull this beast apart. Thank you for being so knowledgable and sharing.
I've built and rebuilt everything else on hundreds of cars & trucks including manual transmission but watching guys that know automatics tear one apart like this is still impressive! I've just never done it, I could of course but this is experience I've never been in the position to gain, I'm lost after 2 minutes 😂😂😂👍 Beautiful!

The no nonsense way he gets to the issue without any fuss or lack of confidence is pretty epic. 👍
As a combat medic myself, I absolutely agree.
When the phone started ringing the 2nd time I 100% thought it was and edit for a death of that case 😂
I love watching a really talented mechanic work, you make it look so easy!
It's nice to watch a video and not feel dumber afterwards. I appreciate the detail!
I love the bluesy ring tone as the destroyed case is exposed, couldn't have timed it better...
You caught that too. Nice.

I too love watching him tear into transmissions...make it look as easy as taking a puzzle apart and putting it back together. He has a lot of knowledge and experience that goes unmatched by many...Thanks for sharing your info and thx for the fun videos.
I salute you!!! this man has obviously invested his life into his work and is willing to try and pass on his knoledge...... RESPECT........
As a fairly young mechanic I'm extremely jealous of your experience.
You're surge from soda AZ
Adding nitrous, turbos, or superchargers to stock engines and transmissions can get expensive really fast.
I really hate when every B.S. session about cars always ends up in nitrous oxide injection ( cheating ) I always tell them they need to do it the old fashion way.
I love it though when I hear of someone talking about putting nitrous injection in their car and by the time they ran out their first bottle they managed to melt all their pistons.
Watching you explain and demonstrate what is working in these transmissions is very therapeutic for me at the end of my day. I don;t do transmissions, but I do repair a lot equipment that has been worked on before by self proclaimed experts..
The education you provide to us novice mechanics is priceless. Thank you sir you are most knowledgeable.
This guy could build a transmission in his sleep 😂😂😂😂😁😁....prolly has..
He has probably woken up one time or another and found a fully built trans in his room and went "wtf again..i gotta stop sleep building these damn things"
You sure go threw those like you invented it!!!
The skills of a surgeon!!! Amazing.
It's a pleasure to watch you work. Thanks for the videos.
Do you ever work dual shaft transmissions for front wheel drive transverse engines? I would love to see some tear downs/builds of that type!!

I know zero about transmissions, but I do know a humble genius when I see one. And I just did. Awesome confidence from experience and wisdom.
Just subscribed. Not because I'm gonna learn much that will help me, but because I love watching a pro work. You remind me of the mechanics I used to know and respect when I was a kid. I'd lump most of the new ones in with politicians.
I was a Ford Master Tech in a former career and fellows like this still blow me away. I can muddle my way through "restuffing" a C4 or C6 (or THM350/400) if pressed, but doing a proper rebuild/update on a modern automatic trans is a huge skill set all its own. This fellow shows exactly why a transmission rebuild is $3000+ today.
Love watching these videos. You are the Bob Ross of transmission repair.
I understood about half of the words in this video. Hydraulics are absolutely mind-blowing to me. It's always a pleasure to watch a master at work. Years of lessons learned (presumably some the hard way) shared in 30 minutes.
So much respect for this guy you can tell he has been through it all my man takes that think apart like a tuna can honestly I always thought ATs were so streassing and complicated to take apart but he makes this interesting and so satisfying as easy as it could be and he hardly has any trouble taking them things apart and he talks about about them like if he designed them thats just crazy to think I personally love MTs but god those are some skills anyone would be blessed to learn and in the span of 28 mins no pauses or cuts and even with a lil joke here and there props to you and your skills man
