Why 53? I'd like to see 67 more.
Obligatory "Wow I love your videos and I didn't know you watched vlogbrothers!" comment.
But seriously, your stuff is amazing.
@@Hi_Brien but John wouldn't...
I just really really really wanna live to be 102. I was born right at the end of the 20th century, so I think I’m one of a group of people who could conceivably meet the wild and arbitrary milestone of seeing three different centuries. This is genuinely what keeps me going.
Pardon me but I'm confused.
Edit: Ok I'm dumb, please don't mind me. 😂 I just automatically assumed you were born on 1899.
Same for me. Though I feel like, with my lifestyle choices, it's not very probable
@Vathek How about the much increased likelihood we'll find strong evidence of extraterrestrial life, my friend, thanks to this next generation of powerful telescopes?
i mean there are a lot of people bornt in 1999, but only a few of them will live up to 101+ years and statistically it's very hard you'll be one of them
Literally same
If John lives to his preferred lifespan, he will die when he is still in his prime :(
Clever
Angry thumbs up
Hey it's John Chessant!
"There is comfort and pleasure to 10 year old shoes that can not be imagined by people whos shoe size changes every year."
Yes, yea there is! (Me, wearing same red winter boots since 2007)
It occurred to me the other day that if I bought myself a pair of ice skates, they'd potentially last me the rest of my life (I live somewhere hot and don't get to the rink very often but love to skate)
I am 17. This made me realize that my shoe size didn't change in the last 3 years. It's honestly kind of sad and weird. I am not an adult yet, in any way. Like, no one will look at me and will take me seriously, at the same time I have to deal with the seriousness of the world. I will graduate this year, and hell, everything will change a lot, while at least my shoes stay the same. The comfort doesn't feel right yet.
@@_the_ I'm sorry you feel no one is taking you seriously. But don't wory, comfort of old shoes always comes in retrospect (like when they are actually old;) so you have something to look forward to ;)
One of the things that surprised me the most is that adulthood can be fun! I wish someone had told me that while I was growing up, it would have made me feel less anxious about the process of getting older.
Same. Lots of wonderful moments. -John
For me, an 18 year old, the weird thing about adulthood isn't so much that it can only be likened to zombie apocalypse. It's that I don't really know anything about zombies so how am I expected to be one.
@@kalpbhavsar That's the perfect way to describe what I'm feeling. I'm gonna start college in a week; I guess I have to learn to be a zombie.
Still waiting for that fun part of adulthood to arrive, and I'm close in age to John...
@@kalpbhavsar i dont think anyone rly knows how to be zombies, we're all just children in zombie costumes but with fully developed braaaaains
John says "It's a nice, solid prime number" and the word "gauche" in the same 5 seconds.
What is this? MY birthday!?
When I was growing up I couldn’t wait to become an adult. As an adult I could have agency over my life where as a child/adolescent I was subject to the whims of the adults in my life.
Adulthood is awesome. Post-college life is far superior to anything that came before. I have the power to acquire stability for myself and nothing has ever given me more joy and hope.
Same! Once I moved out, life was so much better than before. Responsibilities and bills are so worth the freedom and autonomy of adulthood. I'm graduating from college in a few months and I feel so ready to move on.
Oh my goodness yes! I do things every day my inner child could only long for! I've already ticked off so many of my old dreams, and I'm just having a really great time rolling with all there still is to enjoy and the freedom to do it all my own way!
I just had the thought that this community will grow old with Hank and John
"Nothing happens if you don't make goals in this world." 😂 Happy birthday, John!! Mine was last week - I am now officially half your age (sorry), and I have now officially been a nerdfighter for a third of my life. Grateful as always to be defined in part by the things you create, and then in part by the things I create as a result. DFTBA ❤️
Why is Donald Trump pretty and I am not? But why does he only have a wife but I have TWO HANDSOME GIRLFRIENDS who I show off in my masterpiece YT videos? Do you know the answer, dear ma
Mine was on the 10th. I'm 10 years younger than John. Happy birthday to you both. 😊🎂
I am also half John’s age and I share his birthday! DFTBA

Hi John! I hardly ever comment on youtube videos but I’ll make an exception for your birthday :) I’ve been subscribed to this channel since I was 12. I’ll be 20 this November, and you and Hank are still my favorite people to listen to, no matter the subject. I’ve learned so much from the two of you and this channel has been formative for me in more ways than one, so I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you and happy birthday! Here’s to many more!
Completely irrelevant but I wanted to include this: my older brother and I share a copy of TAR, which is something I thought you’d appreciate as someone who l***s his brother :)
I've enjoyed TAR so much over the last few months. I'm sad to see it seeing its sunset, but I'm excited for what else that'll enable John to do with his time. Happy birthday John, you're an amazing human being who's given me plenty to look up to, laugh at, and learn over the last year.
This. All this. You said it really well.
Imagine John is 97 years old and every Tuesday morning he will be like, " Good morning Hank, it's Tuesday...."
The Green brothers might be the only ones to have patience to do that for 70 years
@@amirpourghoureiyan1637 I really hope they will.
It's the year 2074. I take a sip of irradiated water as I wait patiently by my IBM PC for his dulcet tones to reach me. I open Amazontube and as I load the page I hear him...John. "Good morning Hank, it's Tuesday...."
Can you imagine him ( then somewhat senile ) suddenly going "wait, is it???"
I mean, I'll be here watching it☺️
My oldest pair of shoes is 10 years old, and I felt an odd sense of comfort when you mentioned those old shoes. I wear through shoes until they die, so going on 10 years is a pretty good record. I hope happiness finds you in your oldest shoes. Best wishes on your birthday, John.
Happy Birthday, John! Today I finished reading "The Anthropocene Reviewed". Thank you for writing the thing that got me excited to read again. 5 stars.
People: Celebrate life on birthdays.
John Green: Celebrates Anxiety on his birthday... and then wait what no in fact ok yeah life is celebrationable and so in a 180° move John foregoes his anxiety for celebration.

To be honest, I also get very anxious around birthdays, feeling like I'm getting older but not achieving enough or improving enough and all kinds of fun stuff...
Happy birthday John! I've always enjoyed the fact that we share one, it makes it easy to remember.
Happy Birthday to you too!
Happy birthday to you as well! -John
Happy birthday Ryan!
Happy birthday to the both of you guys!
Same! august 24th gang
I wonder where the "doobly doo" will be when John is making videos at 97.
"A man who had not seen Mr. K for a long time greeted him with the words: "You haven't cahnged a bit." "Oh!" said Mr. K and turned pale."
Happy Birthday John, have a wonderful day!
Happy Birthday and thank you for the Anthropocene Reviewed! It lights a small glimmer of hope in me - hope not in denial of bad and big and confusing things, but hope in the face of it. And that is very precious to me.
Thanks very, very kind Gilah. Thank you. -John
The Anthropocene Reviewed is literally one of my favorite pieces of media and it'll be missed by me
Same
John just casually mentions that this week's episode is the last one ever?? Was this announced beforehand? I'm so sad. It's my favorite podcast ever.
Happy birthday John! Today is your birthday, but one year later. The Anthropocene Reviewed is great and it changed my life. Thank you.
I love the fact that you have "eventually becoming a zombie" as part of your zombie apocalypse-plan.
Happy birthday John, you're a stellar person. Truly out of this world. Another year around the sun another year of philanthropy, soccer, and being a key part of the best internet community. Best wishes
“Excruciatingly biting stuff…like life insurance” Little did you anticipate the joy of making ads for Policy Genius
Never has gray hair looked so beautiful. Happy birthday, John ;) All the love from all over the planet!
I definitely appreciated this. I just graduated college and I feel like the rest of my life is just standing right in front of me as some black abyss. Hearing your words about change in adulthood comforted my fears a bit, so thanks and happy birthday!
that "when i was younger, adulthood-" temporarily transported me to a Policy Genius ad
Policy Genius - "How will I ever escape this labyrinth- wait no no that's not their tagline either"
Policy genius - because adulthood is temporary, even if it's close to a million years.
Followed immediately by a mention of life insurance… ooh, subliminal message?
Sundials.
That would sound like an insult to people who don't know the unexpected joy that is John's Policy Genius ads. And I suppose this would sound sarcastic.
ITS MY BIRTHDAY TOO JOHN! I’ve been listening to the podcast and I love it. Can’t wait to get the book! FYI I agree Luigi all the way in Mario cart.
Happy birthday, Lili! -John
@@vlogbrothers thank you that just made my day! 🤩

Happy birthday :D
Happy b'day John..... thanks for being born. I'm grateful to your parents 😄 You inspired me to write my first novel (still in progress, looking forward to sending you the first copy soon)😀
I can't even begin to express the level of delight that came when getting a notification that you posted this video! First, HAPPY BIRTHDAY and I hope you celebrate your years on our planet! Second, I hope to see more videos, as well as fiction or non-fiction from you, but only if it brings you joy to create more. Third, I am so appreciative for the vast amount of awesome perspective and knowledge you have given me, without ever knowing each other, and being worlds apart (I'm in Australia), so thank you!
Happy Birthday, John :)
Hey John! I just wanted to say that one of the signed copies of The Anthropocene Reviewed now lives on my bookshelf in Saint-Petersburg, Russia. Don't know if you've ever been here, but if not, you can now probably say that you have, to some extent :) Thank you for being awesome, and happy birthday!
Happy Birthday John!!
The Anthropocene Reviewed has helped me through many difficult times in my life. Thank you for all the hard work and energy you put in to telling those stories and for being vulnerable with all of us. Your courage, wit and kindness are truly admirable.
I hope you have a wonderful birthday surrounded by the people who love and cherish you most!
My grandfather was 97 and a half when he passed. He was awesome. He retired the year I was born and was my only father figure. He lived many lives.. You have inspired me and comforted me in a way that an amazing father would. So, please, please live to be 97.
so adulthood isn't devoid of all the excitement and motivation like I always dreaded? thanks for the insight, john and happy birthday!
DFTBA!!!
Lots of excitement to be found! There is a lot of annoying stuff, too, of course--but you get better at dealing with that stuff as you grow into adulthood (or I think most people do, anyway. I still find that stuff pretty annoying.) -John
Oh I'm with John, adulthood can be loads of fun! You get this amazing thing called autonomy. I used to dread growing up because everyone told me I should enjoy being young but actually being an adult is so much better.
@@nickynak3 but with autonomy and freedom, isn't there more responsibility, which can only derive more anxiety?
Doesn't life and the societal constructs of it (or "the annoying stuff" as John puts it) get in the way of your motivation and happiness?
@@anushreenarayanan2962 At least in my experience, meeting your responsibilities is incredibly fulfilling and very worth it - and adulthood lends itself to security (friendships that have lasted over a decade, being in the same workplace for longer etc) which negates some of that anxiety. Also, in my experience, my toolkit for coping with the life stuff has got so much better, so I find it much easier to deal with. I am MUCH less anxious now than I was as a teenager!
@@louloureads3953 wow, so eloquently put! enough to move away my pall..thank you, i find myself coming back to this whenever the dread returns, thank you nerdfighteria!
I feel like I always had the opposite perspective about adulthood. I so much looked forward to the freedom to make your own schedule (a week off in the middle of September? Why not?) and loved the idea of having those long-term adult friendships. I don’t think adulthood itself is what kids dread, though doing taxes etc isn’t fun, but it’s that life is such a progression as a kid. You go to school, you go to college, you get a job/become an adult/maybe have a kid, and you die. There’s such a huge jump there that becoming an adult seems like the end of the road when it’s really not
I definitely enjoy being an adult over being a kid or teenager.

I love the anthropocene reviewed. I found vlogbrothers through the sycamore treee and it spoke my every thought and I love this community
HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOHN!!!!!! We thank you for all the amazing things you do and are so greatfull of your existence for all the greatness you’ve given the world. Sadly there’s no gift that’s worth the wonders you’ve given.
For my birthday last year I bought myself a tattoo that said the word "change" amongst wildflowers and I chose that word because the short but fucking brilliantly truthful quote "change is constant" is something i both live by and love. So this video kind of feels like it was made for me, and that's such a wonderful feeling. Also, happy birthday John!
Have you read Parable of the Sower? John Green did a Crash Course on it and you might like it:)
Happy Birthday sir, God bless.
Happy birthday, John! Thank you for making the world infinity better in ways neither you nor any of us will realise, but somehow know anyway!
Happy birthday, John! I will give you a like on this video as a present
Happy birthday! As a kid I thought adults could never sit or sleep on the ground. Turned out my parents both had back problems (edit: and therefore couldn't get easily down) and I'm getting old now and still a happy ground sitter, squatter and sleeper - albeit on a mattress.
Sleeping on the ground may cause back problems.
@@OriginalPiMan Probably depends on the back and the futon or mattress. Plain ground I would agree, the joy of a sleeping bag on thin padding kind of weakens with aging ...
@@susanne5803
Once you've got something as thick as a mattress between you and the ground, I wouldn't call it sleeping on the ground anymore. Even the futon, I would call sleeping on a crappy futon rather than on the ground.
@@OriginalPiMan I was just trying to say that watching my parents as a kid I felt so sorry for grownups since they would never again be able to spread their Legos or whatever on the whole floor and get down and play with them. And it turned out only my parents couldn't. I can and still do most of my activities on the ground.
I can actually still fall asleep and sleep for several hours on the bare ground. But I get a little stiff nowadays and really prefer a mattress. So I am a mattress sleeper. 🤷🏼
I thought this too. I was quite surprised to find I could still sit not only on the ground but cross-legged at 41 weeks pregnant (my mum has always had severe hip problems)
Happy birthday ! Thank you for existing, your outlook and books have made me rethink my outlook on life and think that being human isnt so bad after all
Happy birthday, John! You have made the world that I experience a more thoughtful and generous place, and I will always be grateful for that. :)
Happy Birthday John!!! I got a signed copy of the book and it is great so far I love it and I give it 5 stars ☆
I'm 20 and I just had the realization that my shoe size is probably never gonna change again and that's weirdly terrifying and comforting at the same time. Thanks a lot John.
Also happy birthday!!
fun fact: If you are a person who can get pregnant it still might! Feet can grow two sizes in pregnancy (and stay that way too)
I'm turning 21 in a week and I only had this realization after reading your comment.
Happy birthday! (and thanks for all the cool videos)
It was my birthday two weeks ago! I always forget when your birthday is, and then it comes around two weeks later. I love that. I really just want to live to be 100 so in 2099 I can bump "2099" by Charli XCX and Troye Sivan but 101 would put me in the 3 Centuries Club

For sec I thought you want to be that age because of the radio station.
