Nice experiment - I've basically stopped using faceshields unless it's the Altyn, but even then no ears makes it a struggle. Ulach or nothing camp these days!

This is my 2nd wipe and I’ve been a lot more aggressive so I use face shields more. I think the average player needs to think of them more as assurance that a scav or a Timmy running bad ammo isn’t going to get the one shot on ya. Clearly they have some use against stronger ammo and can make a fight with a better player more in your favor. But relying on them to save your life is going to leave you disappointed.

Way I look at it is you can put on a decent helmet, face shield and headphones. Then I'm using it. Monies easy to make in Tarkov, if it saves my life 1/10 times it's worth it. Time is more important than money.
Good point. Same reason I use L2 armor vest for my uktra budget scav hunt runs. So I dont get 1 shotted by shotgun

I'll wear them when I can for that protection from scavs and bad rounds, but only when I have them available already
Also it doesn't hurt to run it even when you're going to areas like resort or labs where you can expect decent ammo users - you never know when you'll get a ricochet! That's why we prefer high ricochet helmets too!
I think you should’ve continued shooting the Altyn Face Shield with .45 FMJ until failure, not until the player dies of blunt damage to the head. I understand the test is meant to be reflective of in-game scenarios, but the face shield was still working the whole way through.

I think the point about the Level 3 on factory is good. I use the ZSh exclusively on factory and its saved my life countless times vs the pistol and shotgun runners. Would I take it out of factory? Doubtful. But it has a place.
Since they made you not hear shit without headset this wipe I stopped using Zsh on factory because I notice I die far more not hearing players then if I even go naked with a headset because I can hear people.

@@John-Is-My-Name To play with a ZSH you should be playing with only sight, downside is that you are FORCED to play fast, if you don't clear faster than a person could clear up to you then you risk the chance of dying to someone flanking you, basically only go "Forward" with your past cover lines being the flank routes
When using anything but an altyn, the face shield is there purely to protect against shotguns and pistols. Plus, if I have a Fast MT, having the faceshield and the headphones are nice, and the shield isn't too bad in long range shotgun/pistol. More than once I've had a Fast MT shield save a run where I was decently equipped and took some longrange buckshot to the damn face from laser sighted scavs haha.
Exactly, this video was good but completely missed the point of why we wear the FASTMT faceshield. It's to protect ourselves against shotguns and random crap ammo from otherwise killing us. Not to mention headphones are ridiculously overpowered.
The LShZ-2DTM is a perfect helmet standing in between the OP of Altyns and almost useless tier 3 visors, its pretty cheap (around 80-100k helmet + visor) no FOV reduction and tier 4 helmet and visor, totally recomend it!

I bring faceshields to survive low level/budget PMC and scav player and it's 100% worth it.

Depends on the map honestly, faceshields are still worth on customs since it's full of new players and lighthouse because of playerscavs, all the other maps either altyn or no faceshield, people who play interchange/reserve/woods/labs are going to be further down in the progression and will have ammo that pens at least t3 armor

Loved the testing, personally I would have kept the health tab open to see if the death was caused by blunt damage from the stopped round or from a penetration

loving the analysis for the CQB combat, but with damage dropoff at 100m+ the results would vary greatly, would love to see a follow up on these tests with some distance between pmcs
If somebody is shooting at you from that much range they most likely have at least m80 or lps gzh, both of those are still going to kill you trough a tier 3 faceshield or a tier 4 helmet even at that range, obviosly ap6.3 might not pen at that range, but realistically speaking you won't find people sniping with vectors

To me the trooper is really the go to with the High Richochet chance I have tanked SNB to the face a few times with it. at lvl 2 it will take almost all the same rounds as the lvl 3 but with a better richochet chance, bonus also being not having the glass infront of your face.

Ik this doesn’t count for much but me and my buddies tested ap 6.3 the other day vs altyns and air frames with chops and face shield.
We got 6 and 8 hits on altyn and 3 and 5 shots on the air frame when aiming at the chops and 1 not aiming at it

You can check out the pen value of bullets and use calculations to see the pen chance of different armors online, there's a great one on desmos. basically anything with 10x the pen value of the armor class you're shooting at has 90% chance to go through, which means that any test on the tier 3 faceshields that took more than 1 bullet was either down to a sub 10% lucky chance or the ricochet chance, appart from FMJ which only has 25 pen and thus a sub 40% chance of penetrating the first bullet after which durability plays a bigger roll as well as ricochet chance. it'd also be interesting to see on the altyn if the shots actually penetrated or if you died to the blunt damage before which might be the case with the FMJ bullets.
Last wipe I ran a lot with both the fast faceshield and the Condor glasses underneath. I got saved by the Condors many times when the faceshield failed, sometimes to m855A1 bullets, so don't underestimate the power of the ricochet chance.
But in the end, as Holy Lettuce said, don't ever rely on armor
on factory that one tier 4 helmet with tier 4 face shield has saved my life so many times, i usually have to replace 2 to 3 faceshields per helmet without ever taking damage to the rest of the helmet
There is a case to be made for using lower class faceshields on factory seeing how many naked pistol and buckshot users you will run into there, but outside of factory anything under an altyn isn't really worth the effort and money. I'd rather just rock an ulach and wear condors for the small off-chance they'll ricochet something in all the other cases.

1 thing holding me back from ever using any faceshield is headphones, if I can't hear people running behind me I don't see the point oh using faceshields even on factory
Exfil and Fast allow for headphones, as well as the lower class ones, but yeah outside of that your hearing is limited. I will say though, the more you use an Altyn/Rhys for example, you definitely adapt to the hearing restriction and it isn't as much of a shock when switching from headphones.
@@JonnyBooSock I've died on multiple occasions using altyns and even lszsh lv4 on factory, when you can't hear them they have enough time to hit you till the point that your reaction time is barely enough to kill them once they put 3-4 shots on you, imagine someone ratting with a shotgun on factory you are done!

You got a good concept . Imo I would like to have seen you check k the health stats at one several of the deflections. You got a heavy bleed but where, and on one your head took almost no damage but you thorax went red.
Condor glasses will ricochet 7.62X54 LPS ammo. Found out from experience.
I would have liked to see the lshz face shield. Maybe the reason people don't run it is because they don't know that it exists.

Shields are super effective against scavs and rats, saved me sometimes from lucky Makarov shots :D
I never really go out of my way for a face shield after a few weeks into wipe. If I do wear one I know it's mainly for terminator mag buck scavs.
Interesting that you encounter the Kiver and ZSH more in your gameplay. At 4-5k hours I have encountered the EXFIL more, to my surprise. Definitely LESS than the FAST and Altyn, but the Kiver and ZSH are non-existent. Oh well.
Yes I encounter the exfils frequently as well, just felt like I'd be hitting some redundancy if I'd included it since it's stats are a middleground between others is all 🙂

I personally just run the Shattered mask with sordins its brilliant combo survived more raids with that than with a proper faceshield but as you said at the end its all up to the person playing and how many rubles they have to throw around but I mean I dont say no if someone brings a sexy airframe in for me to wear ;)
56a1 has 37 pen, the pen threshold for level 3 (80% chance) is 30. (this is the same for all classes of armor, 1 = 10, 2 = 20 and so on)
If you want a quick summary: All glass faceshields are useless against easy access rifle rounds (BT, BS, 56a1, m80 and so on) and the stronger faceshields will only stop a couple rounds.
What you're relying on most with the weaker faceshields is purely richochet chance, which calculates the angle of the surface + the richochet chance of the faceshield + The richochet chance of the individual bullet (the WIKI contains this information) so essentially, weak faceshields and the altyn faceshields perform the same when dealing with m61, 995 and other +50/60 pen rounds.
And your choices on using which depends on preference (because the altyn blocks your view), playstyle, the map youre going to (Labs= Most people use high pen rounds, while most people on factory are a mixed bag of high to low pen rounds)
Also, don't know if this is patched, however most bullets wouldnt pen condors after hitting glass/faceshields so just be sure to wear a pair of condors behind your faceshield for that extra hitbox protection.
EDIT: eft-ammo.com website that tells you each bullets parameters, be sure to check tarkov-ballistics.com for these bullet parameters in a bit more detail (Informative when it comes to engaging distances)
Funfact: 7.62x51 Nato m62 was nerfed from 53pen to 44pen after patch 12.9 which the altyn has a 70%+ chance of blocking on the first shot.
This is why I always wear a condor behind my altyn. Without it it was like coinflip hen bp hit me.

The most annoying thing is that I can get the maska helmet at ragman 3 but not the face shield. And I can get the altyn face shield but not the helmet. Can I pls just duct tape the altyn face shield onto the maska? Lol
Airframes late game for the double ricochet chance on jaws and eyes is why you run face shields. The actual face shields are only good vs anything with around 27 pen or less in terms of actually tanking a hit or two which limits them to mostly stopping PS ammo and some pistol rounds. The team Wendy isn't a bad alternative but you lose the double jaw protection and you gain some penalties for turn speed and ergo. Once you hit the end game of Tarkov money really isn't a big deal so there is no reason to not run these unless you are sniping or doing some super budget kits.
It would be really interesting if someone did a proper test on ricochet chance to nail down if the angles matter and if it truly only works on a round that would pen since nobody has been willing to spend the rubles and time trying to test in live servers but with the addition of offline coop there is room for videos to finally get some data on this as well as the actual hearing reduction penalties that helmets give whether it be low or high penalties. The community is still working off years old info from nofoodaftermidnight which was never really verified.
I remember bringing ZSH the first time I could get my hands on it 2 wipes ago and some dude head eyes me with m995 the moment I turned around the corner of office floor in factory.
Maybe do a comparison of face shields that compare to the Altyn?
I use Trooper mask on Fast MT helmet only for night raids, cuz This helmet with side covers gives you full head protection while having NVGs on.
I remember killing a full kitted meta-guy with a PM pistol i found in the box 20 seconds before the guy appeared near me. Just shot him to his unprotected face.
Trooper mask would save him from PM ammo.
Other than that i use either Exfil or Altyn. Sometimes LShZ helmet cuz it gives full class 4 head protection and enough for a Factory run.

You see level 3 FS are weared only agaınst Scavs , for sure 7.62 PS can take you done , but hitting that with sks or akm is kinda hard. However ton of 9x19 20mm buckshots , 855 . 5.45 PS rounds , and all other stuff that BOTS have will be no problem for you. For sure Altyn is the only option for SQB .
Btw i suggest you to look close at level 4 Face shields , as they can survive BT , 855A1 and M80 .
As much as I enjoy tanking round after round, I feel like the armorless movement is better than having a tier 4 helmet and 5 armor.
I personally am going to keep running faceshields, If I encounter people running these ammos, I expect them to pen but I have significantly less raids where I'm "HEAD-EYES" killed by a scav or someone using 8.5 magnum buck.
Altyn, Shattered mask or no helmet for me.
Altyns I’ll use during warmups for labs then I switch to shattered mask when I feel like o go my movements down.

I wear a team wedndy with face shield 24/7 and before i finsh samples i buy the LSHZ with the face shield. They have saved me so many times its insane its riccochet the worst and best ammo in the game and sometimes stopes it compleatly. I will aways have a helment on i never understand not having one on. Its either do you want to pay 0 to 100% get one tapped or 80k to maybe get one tapped or 150k to geneneraly live. I get not using the alt due to sound but sometimes im factory ill run a jug kit for fun. I higley recomend using a helmet it will save u alot more than it will be a waste.
neat gives an dinsight on if its worth it to even buy them, tho i would've liked to see the trooper face shield as well, ive been running it lately and its has saved me quite a bit, even against other pmcs unsure if its just pure luck but still
It's really just luck, unless it is a very very low pen round. You're relying on just ricochet chance, same with Shattered mask. At which point you're just juggling with RNG - then again this is all RNG, but ricochet chance is just....more heavily RNG 😅

I feel like level 3 shields *only* for scav protection. It’s saved me once or twice from getting head,jaws’d by a scav when I play sloppy, but that’s about it
I find them useful at saving you from scavs that load into the match with garbage ammo. They are experts at headshots and stomach shots but their ammo is sometimes bad enough to justify the faceshield but I also only use the ones that allow you to wear a headset as well.
One of the main features of helmets and faceshields in general isn't their raw armor class but their ricochet chance. Which is a product of the angle the bullet hits at unlike armor.
So while your test allegedly looks over straight on shots, realistically its not that easy and largely your paying the price for the ricochet chance which can be significant against meta ammo . Upwards of 50% chance at high enough angles.

I wear faceshields all the time and I'm surprised by how many shots you can take, I always seem to die to blunt damage a lot quicker. 2 taps from rifle rounds and I'm down even with Altyn

I wore an Altyn with a face shield once. Got geared up with a Zabralo and 400k meta gun, into Factory. Got 1 tapped head eyes 7.62x39 PS instantly. Never worn it again.
This was 3 wipes ago where PS was weaker than it is now.
I would have liked to see the Tagilla mask tested as well.
I would've liked to too, but at the time of testing, I didn't have two with perfect durability. Still don't actually haha
I feel like face shields are good only for factory on a low tier spectrum. Besides that carrying one on for scavs in building but I’d rather be able to see and hear because some helmets block hearing.

do bastion with the slab i remember putting 4 m62 in it and my buddy put a few 7.62 bp as well and the guy was still running xD when we killed him and checked the helmet it was full of holes :D
I like face Shields for anything I expect to get into fights sub 25m. Though level 3 is fine I would never go above it. If someone manages to face shot me with a higher pen round I'll just take the L. Face shields shouldn't change the way you play they're just there to catch the occasional kedr spray, pistol bullet or buckshot that would otherwise tarkov you. For that I think it's worth it.
eye shield plus condors or Oakley is the best imo
the real test we all wanted to see was the storm trooper helmet "Tac-Kek Heavy Trooper mask"
My Condor Sunglasses ricochet a 7,62x39 PS from a scav and saved me. Never thought this would work.
In my experience, ricochet chance has saved me more often than the armor class stopping power of faceshields 🤷♂️
in my limited experience i encounter way more pistol and shotgun rounds in the situations where i use face shields
Other than Altyn (which i almost never use..) i use face shields to protect me from scav buckshot, never was i under any illusions that these, especially level 3 ones would protect from rifle rounds or any decent FMJ..

Most low level face shields are for those that struggle with scavs. Any player is going to kill them regardless, but it's useful for the "mostly" low tier ammo that scavs use.
Just as i thought. All armor in Tarkov does not perfectly protects you, but gives you a second chance if you screw up. Although, Altyn seems best for close combat, as it stops nearly all main calibers at least one time.
IBH, I use face shields more for the head eye scavs that actual player defense.
i find face shields are nice when im playing like factory or somewhere pretty close quarters, i cant count the number of times that little 20k face shield blocked buckshot or kept me going vrs a rat with a keder and let me get out, not for everywhere but def useful imo
And also dont forget to mention that wearing faceshield.. mainly ALTYN comes with the price of not hearing/seeing much and being slower.. i personally use altyn and i tank headshots almost every raid

Does shooting the glass on the helmet at an angle affect its effectiveness? I believe that helmets work like that when it comes to ricochets, so why wouldn't that apply to face shields as well? I could be completely wrong but please test haha
also why does thorax take damage from a headshot? does the round pen through the head hitbox and affect the thorax as well? you should check the pmc wasn't just dying to thorax. especially since the altyn is a class 5 and the body armour being worn is class 4 only.
I would assume that the angles affect ricochet on faceshields too... this could be really fun to test, all around. Appreciate the idea, I'll definitely try it.
As for the thorax hits, those were a result of fragmentation I'm pretty positive. The face was still the direct hit, and the head would take reduced damage, but some partial damage was redirected to the thorax. In these situations, I left them in rather than retesting, as they represent what damage you'd actually take in in game combat. If I removed these fragmentation results frlm the test,, the test technically wouldn't be representative of normal combat, rendering the test not realistic. Definitely something I had to weigh the pros and cons of while conducting it all
I barely use helmets much less face shields these days lol, only really run the tac kek for the cheap high ricochet chance
although I've heard that with the dmg dropoff changes helmets have a higher chance of saving you from a long range oneshot to the head even if the round pens due to the dmg dropoff pushing high pen low dmg ammo below the head hp threshold
im running ULACH every raid and it saved me a lot of times. Always worth since its only 50K and most of the times you dont even have to buy them since you find them enough

Lower durability = lower effectiveness. That being said, losing 2 durability isn't too significant, as long as there isn't a bull set hole obstructing your vision
Another take on this video is: which ammo should I use to defeat face shields! Looks like 5.56x45 995, 5.45x39 BS, and 7.63z39 BP are the winners! You'd think that the 7.62x51 would have fared better eh!?

Faceshields is the best thing in the world, even the 2 and 3 tier. I got saved soooo many times with them. Random shots from scavs, head-eyes on factory, snipers on forest. Thing is - if you have a chance of survival - use it, its only 30k
Nowadays I mostly die to limb spill damage. But there were raids I wish I had a fs bc I would have won the fight.
i have actually one tapped two altyn players in one raid before on woods with m61, makes me wonder if they were already somewhat damaged or something, up until now i just assumed that nothing could stop m61
I'm guessing you meant to say that you 2 tapped a player with an altyn, since otherwise what you wrote makes no sense.
In that case it might have been a ricochet or the guy was extremely lucky and the altyn absorbed the shot.
The penetration is always a chance and it never reaches 0 or 100% (unless the armor/helmet is at 0 durability, in which case the armor basically is not there for the game except penalties), so even tho an m61 should almost alway pen an altyn there's always that slim chance to tank it

i one tapped both, one bullet enterred the head and the first altyn died. i then collected his slightly damaged altyn and one tapped his buddy who also had an altyn as well

Why was the Team Wendy Exfil helmet not tested? That faceshield has a high ricochet chance while the Fast face shield is only a medium.
I explained why I didn't choose the exfil in the video. While it is common, it's stats are just a middleground between the Kiver and ZSh, so it felt redundant to test it.
