A safety tip for field archery (where you move from target to target through the woods) is to ALWAYS hang your bow on the front of the target when retrieving your arrows. If you establish that habit someday when you miss the target or when an arrow goes thru the bales a following archer will see your bow in front of the target and recognize someone is in the bushes or behind the target and not start shooting.

Good tip!
I'm not good at english, does that mean I need to lean/hang my bow on some trees near the targets or you hold the bow with the long side of the bow's orientation facing up/down to warn the other that you were there?
That is super solid advice, thank you! I really want to find one of those field archery courses near me. I have an archery range at the park across the street from me, but it is just a few targets in a line. Nobody ever goes and I al amlways the only one there though, so I kinda make my own field archery scenario where I walk around unknown distances and odd angles and shoot the targets from behind cover or through branches to simulate hunting situations. I almost never shoot from the known distance lines except when I first set up my stuff at the range.
I made a bow with a shoe lace, a semi curved stick, and a wooden dowel for the arrow, I'm bout to become the best archer in the world

I've shot archery off and on for a long time since I was 5 years old. I'm 61 now and have never had any formal training. Thank you for this video, it will help me correct any bad habits. Also, find a suitable and safe place to shoot. A bad shot can be very destructive and dangerous.
Putting a target on your dad's tailgate for target practice is NEVER a good idea.
I shot a good bit in my teen years. I'm 73 and will start shooting again this spring. This is a good reminder of those primary steps. It's going to be like starting all over!

I've been shooting archery for over 20 years now myself and introduced many new archers to the sport during this time. I was watching this video to see your take on it and I am really glad that the things mentioned are exactly the tips I've been giving new archers for years on their first day.
@bastiat kids that age are developed very differently physically, so there's not a definite answer to that. From my experience, she should be able to handle a 66" bow with ~15# (which is more or less the lowest a normal recurve bow goes, unless you look specifically into bows for small children, which shouldn't be necessary at the age of 10, but is still a possibility). It's also best to start out with a wooden riser, since they are lighter than aluminum ones.
Generally speaking, when starting out it's never wrong to go too low on weight in my opinion, but going too high can greatly impact the learning process in a negative way.
@bastiat A basic recurve bow consists of a riser (the part in the middle, where you grip your bow) and two limbs (the long parts above and below the riser) and a string which is strung between the top and bottom limb.
You can think of the limbs as springs. When you pull on the string, you bend the limbs, the stronger the limbs and the further you pull, the more force you need and the more force will be put into the arrow when you release. Usually limbs' nominal force are measured at around 28" (inch) draw length (much further han a 10 year old would draw). So when I am talking about 15# (1# = 1 pound = 0,454 kg) limbs, the actual force required to pull the bow for your niece will be much less, since she might only draw the bow by 20" or whatever.
The part about taking a wooden riser in my previous comment has nothing to do with draw weight, but just with the general weight of the bow, so the force you need to lift it up.

Edit: btw, generally speaking it's best to stop by an archery club nearby and talk to the people there. They might even have bows so new archers can try it out, so you don't have to commit to buying anything right away.
What size bow should I get, I’m 5,5& not too strong either
@@Man_fay_the_Bru I've been a traditional archer for about 25 years now, and might be able to give you some insight here. At 5'5", you should have no problem with a 64" bow, and that would probably fit you perfectly. Longer bows are usually feel more stable for most people, and tend to be more accurate and more forgiving than shorter bows. And a 64", or possibly even a 66" bow, would be a good size bow length for you to start out with as a beginner. My advice to you would be to start out with a 64" bow.
BUT, that being said...height is not as much of a factor in determining the length of the bow you should use as your draw length, and what feels comfortable for you personally. Whatever bow you choose must be able to first safely accommodate your draw length. And then, at a minimum, the bow length should be no shorter than double what your draw length is, and then as many inches beyond that as you feel you can comfortably manage for height. That is ultimately what you should go by when choosing a bow size.
So for example, if your draw length happens to be 28", and your height is 5'6", you would want to use a bow that is no shorter than 56". And about no longer than 64". Remember, longer bows tend to be more stable, and more accurate and forgiving than shorter bows, which make them ideal for beginners, and archers who require precision, like Olympic archers, competition shooters etc.
You can find size charts online that suggest a 5'5" or 5'6" person use a 64" bow. Which I would agree is about right for maximum length. But ultimately these are just suggestions, and you should always keep in mind that your comfort is going to be one of the most determining factors. I'm 6'1", with a 29.5" draw length, and size charts suggest that I use a 68" or 70" bow. But for the last 14 years or so my preference has been a 62" bow, and none of the bows I own are over 66". That's just what I prefer and what I'm comfortable with.
If you haven't done this already, you should find a range with a pro shop, and go in a try out a few bows, and see what feels right. The bow techs there will be happy to help you. If that's not an option, or you are just looking to order a bow online, then my advice is to go with the 64" to start. Samick Sage makes some truly excellent quality bows for novice to advanced archers, that are very popular and go for around $150 - $200. I would strongly suggest a Samick Sage, with at least a 25lbs and no more than a 30-35lbs draw weight, and a D97 flemish twist bowstring.
I know you made this comment a couple months ago, but I saw that it went unanswered, so I just thought I'd comment on it and tell you what I thought, and hopefully at least give you some insight on it if you by some chance haven't already found the answer you were looking for.

I just subscribed and thank you for the start up tips. I'm 62 and my nephew is a bow builder so for my 62nd birthday he built me a long bow from Osage orange. Its about 49 lbs with a 30 in draw. Stance and hand grip have been a big challenge for me & if those 2 things don't feel right, nothing else seems to flow.

I was always given a right handed now to use but it turned out that I am left eye dominant so I was never very successful with my shooting. Now I am taking up the sport again but this time I have purchased a left handed now so it was great to see you instruct with a left handed one. This was quite informative on a lot of useful form tips. I appreciate the way you demonstrate and explain these and used an unfamiliar grip to give us a good beginner example. I definitely didn't know you needed a follow though.

Great video, Just started in an archery club so this gave me good information that they don't teach out (They are too busy with the kids there than the older ones) so we just shoot and know how to stand, but they aren't really teaching much at all even tho we are paying for it :D So will show this video to a few over there!
I do trad archery (horesbow) and our bows are different, so is our technique. That said I love your advice for beginners, as it creates a solid foundation to progress from. Especially the letter T. (as a kid in the 70's we had the same poster on our field shed). The one thing I'd add from Saracen archery is to start very close to the target (in training saracen archery the distance is minimal for the beginer[ in fact it is truely a couple of feet, but a metre is a good modern compromise, bow weigh at #15-20 to start). Also with wooden arrows check the shaft as you re-quiver them. Fantastic resource!!!

Saying the set up to myself. Grip in right spot, finger in front, arrow under knock, fingers under arrow, draw to same place every time, and release with t formation and follow through. Whoop there it is! Love it.

Because my son has trouble with his draw, I had to him, to make it easier, after he is finished putting the arrow in, draw back while it’s pointing down and then when he is ready, lift up and aim. He found that way easier than drawing while pointed at the target.🤗🥰

I used to shoot a recurve bow a bit. Wasn’t good but wasn’t bad. Then I started shooting a compound and got good. When I tried a recurve again while my compound bow is being restrung, I was embarrassed how much I forgot and how poor I shot. This video was a perfect refresher. I can’t wait to try again.

I'm coming to archery from fb place kicking. Your discussion of follow through is a hoot and absolutely correct--my mentor always said, you let the crowd tell you if your kick is good, just concentrate on the follow through because you're otherwise likely to pull the swing one way or the other.
Archery is really appealing to me and I'd like to begin. I have an old compound bow I got at Christmas a long--a very long time ago. Should I start with something ordinary, first?

Awesome video thank you. Would like to see an addition to this video that I think will help new archers. Sighting and using both eyes vs. the typical close one eye to shoot type of habit. I did see this on another video and think it would be great to cover as well for us that are restarting the hobby.

That's Aeesome Jake, it made me laugh because i can relate.I'm 54, an archer for 30+ years and i just bought a $400 25# straight bow for target practice.I am subscribed and i need all the tips available. Thank you and please do a video about the "archers' paradox" and do a video about draw length,draw wieght and poundage so that i can find a custom recurve, about 35 or so lbs for target shooting!
