    Here's everything you need to know about the new Garmin Descent MK1 dive watch. Or, alternatively, a bunch of really fun videos about the NEMO33 indoor dive facility. I walk through the watch and how a standard dive works (it includes gauge, single-gas, multi-gas, apnea/freediving modes, as well as the ability to plan a dive).

      That's why he especially notes that in "Dive Mode" it locks down. No extra apps, nothing except what is needed in diving mode. Just so you wouldn't miss when the watch tell you "time is up" or something else important to diving (I know nothing about diving).

    Things I'd like to see In the MK2 from a freediving perspective. Recovery time on the surface, should alert you in apnea mode when you have spent 220% longer than your last dive length at the surface WHILE in resting heart rate zone. With options to adjust the recovery time percentage and heartrate function.I'd also like to see other adjustable condition alerts like alert me if I'm still at or above 100ft and its been more than 50 seconds and make said alerts have customizable alert tones/viberations. I'd also LOVE to see a wrist based SPO 2 sensor that works in the water. Don't know if its been done before and I'm taking a huge guess while saying this but i think that could be amazing at preventing shallow water blackout. A larger screen, more tap controls (the double tap to scroll was smart! Add the option to other apps that aren't just diving! Hikers wear gloves to bro!

    Great video. Thank you!
    I've been waiting for something like this for a few years now and have been resisting the temptation to replace my old Suunto fully expecting that someone will come out with a real smart watch that's also a dive computer. This is so much more.
    Sure the price point is steep, but when you consider the fact that I was ready to buy two devices, one for diving and another for everything else, it's a bargain.
    I have another few months before my next diving vacation. So I'll do some more research, but as of right now , it's a clear front runner.

I have a Fenix 3 and I have always been scared of using it while swimming or even in the shower. May I ask you (and I know my question is not related to this particularly video :P ), but could I also use the Fenix 3 inside a pool just like you are using the Descent ??

    What about the 16gb of internal storage the 5X has? What about the ability to install topographic maps? What about Live Track ?

      @Dcrainmaker  Před 6 lety +2

      Correct, everything. You'll likely see slight lag for new firmware updates, since the Descent goes through a longer QA process than the 5X does for safety reasons, but the rough plan is to keep them identical. Yes on breadcrumb, no problems there. Yes on Topo installs. And yes on live track.

    Deepblue Cosmiq+ was $606.79
    Garmin MK1...........was $786.91 (original price with no discount was $1 215.67)
    So the totall difference $180.12
    Would you say the uppgrade was worth $180.12?

  • @LacayoDe
    @LacayoDe Před 6 lety

    I recently read this In a website but I think is wrong can you please clarify this for us?
    FENIX 5X VS DESCENT MK1
    You mentioned that Descent doesn’t have quite the same amount of fitness/training features as the Fenix 5 tell me more! The following might sound like a lot but considering the number of diving features gained and the plethora of fitness features still available it doesn’t make an impact on how powerful this watch is. I’ve listed the specs below for a full breakdown of all features available.
    The Descent Mk1 won’t come preloaded with profiles for Strength, training and cardio training. It also does not come with Cardio workouts, strength workouts or the automatic rep counting feature.
    In regards to training and planning/analysis features the Descent won’t come with auto multisport activities or manual multisport activities.
    For running features, the Descent Mk1 has almost all the same except Vertical oscillation and ratio (the degree of ‘bounce’ in your running motion and the cost-benefit ration with stride length). Ground contact time and balance (shows how much time, in the running motion, your foot is on the ground rather than in flight and lets you check your running symmetry) and Stride length. *All of these require the compatible accessory from Garmin.
    Additionally, the Descent Mk1 does not feature the FTP (Functional Threshold Power) feature that is available with the fenix 5X for cycling.

    • @joelsherrouse2053
      @joelsherrouse2053 Před 6 lety +3

      According to Garmin, it uses the Bühlmann deco model, and it automatically adjusts for altitude dives.
      It also has handy tech/nitrox functions like trimix support, deco lockout override, deep stops, a multi-gas planner, gas-switch depth notifications, PO2 tracking/warnings, and up to 5 deco mixes on a single dive.
      It really does look like they're being very serious about entering the dive market.

    • @Dcrainmaker
      @Dcrainmaker  Před 6 lety

      Same size as the Fenix 5X (same shell). From a Suunto standpoint, it's complex (assume comparison to DX and D6I. If you look at non-dive features first, then Garmin has a boatload more (GPS/sports/smartphone integration/etc...). That's easy. Then you get to dive features and both have the ability to download dives to their respective platforms (but Suunto requires computer, not just phone). Suunto supports 3 gas mixes at the D6i and 8 at the DX, Garmin is 6. But Suunto does support wireless air link on their highest end model, so you could monitor that accordingly in one place. Suunto also touts more advanced algorithms, but again, it's kinda tit for tat in some areas. Beyond that though - both units from a spec standpoint are fairly similar.

    • @Dcrainmaker
      @Dcrainmaker  Před 6 lety +1

      Yeah, I can't remember if I get into it in the video as deep as the post. But essentially they went back to the Fenix 3 charger for this one because of concerns around over-pressure at 100m. The standard they test to for this watch required overpressure, beyond the 100m. Also required direct hits against hard options at depth to that piece. So essentially they felt more secure with the existing port there.

    • @miamitreo
      @miamitreo Před 6 lety

      DC Rainmaker seems they should have stuck with the fenix 3 charging port for the fenix 5 also. My question then becomes is my fenix 5 REALLY capable of 100m as listed in the back of the watch??? Garmin has some explaining to do....

    • @Dcrainmaker
      @Dcrainmaker  Před 6 lety

      I suspect it is capable of 100m (Fenix 3). But my guess is that the overpressure piece per the standard is what does the trick. I can't seem to find any downloadable version of the EN13119 spec that doesn't cost $49 to download. But would be curious how much overpressure it takes.

    • @veryconfused2
      @veryconfused2 Před 5 lety

      Steffen H. Found some useful info ... The difference between them two is that Descent MK1 has:
      -Depth Gauge added: To measure depth, obviously.
      - Waterproofing standard differs: It’s waterproof to 100m, but in this case they’re specifically following EN 13319
      - Added DLC bezel coating: The Fenix 5X doesn’t have this, and it hardens against scratches. On higher end model Titanium model.
      - Charging port changed: In order to get the dive-focused 100m rating, they switched back to the Fenix 3 charging port
      - Additional super-long strap included: It’ll fit around dry suits, or perhaps a very bulky wetsuit
      The biggest change up above aside from the depth gauge is the adherence to EN13319. That’s more than just bringing it to 100m, but actually doing overpressure testing at the 100m depth, as well as things like protection against banging the screen and body against rocks and hard surfaces while at that depth. The obvious goal being that if you are cave diving it should be able to withstand a few whacks to the head.
      Then there’s some software focused changes:
      - Dive modes added: To record dives, obviously. More on this in a second.
      - No Fly Watch Face: To tell you when it’s safe to fly
      - HR Recording Works Underwater: Yup, they found that given diving is less about strokes, it records quite well
      - No Connect IQ Apps allowed in Dive Mode: Simply for safety reasons. Apps allowed in all other modes.
      - Different software development QC process for the dive aspects of the unit

      Aymene Megri the body is still made of titanium, however the higher price watch comes with a Titanium band as well.

      From what I was reading on the Garmin site and from another video, the actual frame of the watch is titanium and the higher priced watch comes with a titanium band as well.

    I had a lot problems with Garmin Forerunner 235 Crashes, resets, screen freezes etc, I wouldn't trust Garmin for a diving Watch

    Did Garmin said anything about a tank pressure sensor for air integration? That will make it perfect.

      It won't be in the MK1 unfortunately, but it sounds like they're targetting it for Gen2. Check out my post above for details on why.

      Not in the MK1, though it sounds like it's on the table for future versions. I dive into the details of that a bit more in the linked post in the description.

    Imagine a watch that somehow reads how much oxygen you have in your blood and it tells you how much longer you should stay down before coming back up

    A friend of mine has this dive computer and tells me that it does have ai. It will connect to any transmitter you have.

    • @Dcrainmaker
      @Dcrainmaker  Před 5 lety +1

      Unfortunately, your friend is wrong. It’s the single biggest item people ask for, and there’s no hardware in the watch to enable air connectivity.
