    You are spot on calling the Garmin MK1 "a masterpiece".
    I also appreciated you stating that calling the Garmin MK1 "a fitness watch" is a huge understatement.
    Actually, the Garmin MK1 is more of a "life manager" that includes a diver app of superior performance.
    You offered two criticisms about the MK1, one, its screen size being too small for your personal preference.
    The issue with size is that if Garmin makes this life manager computer any bigger it could be bothersome to wear it on a daily basis as it is designed to be used.
    So the sacrifice in order to enjoy all the other many features of the MK1 when you are not SCUBA or free diving is, well yes, to have a smaller dive computer on your wrist.
    There are ways to offset for a smaller screen, one, you can customize the MK1 to make the numbers larger (I tried this on watch more) and two, you can also add magnifier lenses to your SCUBA mask if you'd find that the MK1 is a bit hard to read when you are diving.
    The other critique that you stated was no air integration - I understand the MK2 by Garmin will be air integrated although at DEMA 2019 the Garmin people were not willing to admit to it.
    I would argue that air integration is nice to have but not a necessity for the recreational diver.
    There are so many people that trust analog SPGs far better than the transmitter-based air integrated computer models, so, personally, the MK1 not having air intergration is not a problem for me at all.
    Here is the thing that Garmin gets that no other SCUBA diving computer company gets: for the overwhelming majority of the SCUBA divers around the world, even those who are in absolute love with the sport of SCUBA diving, the time you spend underwater is only a fraction of your week.
    So Garmin has engineered a formidable dive computer that is imbedded inside this "life manager" device which has so much more to offer to the end user than just a SCUBA/Free diver dive app.
    I won't go over the details of all the other value-adding features the Garmin MK1 has that no other dive computer has (none of them even come close to what Garmin offers) because you already provided a good enough summary of said features.
    Bottom line is, sophisticated end customers can pay around $1K to buy a formidable dive computer that has some smartwatch features, or they can pay $1K to buy a life manager full of apps.
    There is of course the cheap choice of buying a $300 dive computer that would likely be bulky and cheap-looking but this is also a problem-solving alternative.
    Me personally? Thumbs up Garmin and welcome to the sport of SCUBA diving.

      Thank you for a very comprehensive and in-depth reply - very very much appreciated!
      So, just to clarify on my comments. Yes I did think that screen size was too small, but that was when comparing it against the Suunto D5, The Shearwater Teric and the iDive Colour Easy - I compared all 4 units in the 'Big Dive Computer' Review Video - there's a link to that review at the end of this video if you haven't seen it.
      All of these units are a similar size, but the Descent has a much smaller viewable screen in comparison, and I'm comparing these as dive computers - and not life managing smart watches.
      On my other comment - air integration. I fully understand a lot of people don't care for this, but as it's a growing feature on almost all DC's these days I do think they missed a trick. I too have heard that the Mk2 will have AI (and possibly a larger viewing screen), which for me will make this probably the best DC on the market.
      I'm a big AI fan, and always dive with a unit that has AI as well as a working SPG.
      Do I think the Descent Mk1 is good/worth it?? Absolutely!! I'm just calling out the things they could have improved on, and remember, a lot of divers don't necessarily dive with a watch that is their everyday device too.
      Fundamentally I agree with the thumbs up to Garmin for a great product, and looking forward to see what the Mk2 has to offer!!
      Thanks again for your comment, and a very Mery Christmas to you!

    I would get this if I were a diver, for you runners out there I recommend Coros Pace 2 for the incredible battery time, I charge mine once per month and it offers satellite maps (after) your run on your phone / computer for showing friends. But again, this is king for diving. Thanks for this video.

      Thanks for the great feedback - you're spot on, the Mk1 is perfect for the diver, and for those that also like to be active in multi-sports outside of the water too. However, the king for diving has to be the newly released Descent Mk2i. It really is an incredible dive computer!

    I have had the MK1 Titanium for around a Year and I love it! I wear and sleep in it every Day, Battery Life is also great! Not fussed about Air integration as I would never solely rely on that and dive with out a Gauge!! Yeah that Black Ring inside the Bezel is just a waste of space as the Display could have easily been a good few mm bigger and would not have cost a lot more! Maybe they just wanted to fit the bloody Garmin Logo on the front lol
    I was considering the Shearwater Teric as that had the AMOLED Screen which is super nice and bright but didn’t want a Computer I had to charge every few Days as I wanted to wear it daily! Did that with my Samsung Gear and not much fun having to constantly charge your Watch! Other downer for the MK1 is no Wireless charging
    That all said, If I wanted just a Dive Computer or didn’t mind constantly charging it I would have then gone for the Teric.

I am short with a tiny wrist of 5.25 inches around and was worried about this thing looking like a big honkin' satellite dish on my arm but it's so incredible that I probably won't give a flying F.

    Another great video. I use a shearwater perdix AI as my main dive computer but am looking at a watch type for when travelling but something I can also wear daily as a watch. Was looking at the teric but think this one just has more features for every day and the gps is a great feature. Again thanks for the video. I’ll be ordering one from mikes dive store ASAP and that’s what I’ll be taking with me when things have returned to somewhat normal and I can go on the vortex in Guadalupe. All the best. Chris 👍🏻

    • @BlackMantaPhotography
      @BlackMantaPhotography  Před 4 lety

      Hi Chris - thanks for the lovely comment. Much appreciated! I've tested both the Descent and the Teric, and whilst the Teric is the most complete DC I've ever used, you are right in that the Descent is a real contender with the extra smart watch features. It's only downside is the lack of AI and size of screen as I mention in the video.
      However - reports state that the Garmin Descent Mk2 will be out soon (hopefully), and will/should/might have AI..! If this does then for me that will always be the winner hands down!! If you aren't fussed about the AI then you'll definitely get yourself a bargain at Mike's Dive Store on the Mk1 when the Mk2 is released - if however, you want what could be the most complete DC ever made then hang on for the Mk2..!!
      On a side note - the Vortex boat is utterly amazing! Guadalupe too...
      Funny thing is you won't need your DC to cage dive at Guadalupe as you're either in the surface cage, or in the submersible with crew. Definitely want to get back there!!

    Thanks for the vid mike. I'm glad that I saw a more detailed review of my personal love-at-the first sight dive computer I saw earlier on your comparison video.
    I believe that for people who choose an active lifestyle, having one piece of wearable tech for everything on board is not only convenient, but potentially critical as well. Now, let's think of having a dive computer that I use only during dives. True, I may have read the instruction manual forwards and backwards, got the the knack down for it's every feature, and used it uneventfully several times before. But more experienced divers better know that things don't always run smooth underwater and when things go south, it may be a life or death situation that you have made that piece of equipment an extension of your nervous system, and interact with it instinctively; because that you used a dive computer several times doesn't necessarily mean that you'll remember how to use it properly when your physiology is compromised due to a myriad of complications a diver can encounter. The first thing I forcefully carved into my head during my basic training was that you should never take your attributes and sound judgement for granted in a medium which is normally inconsistent with human life, and you survive thanks to bio-integrated equipment. When a diver who clocked 300 dives under his belt passed out due to exhaustion in one of my first dives and I ended up grabbing him from rolling into the water, that opinion solidified. WE were counting on HIM to lead us dive and despite all his experience and everything, that happened to him.
    Anyway, got carried away, back on track. So getting accustomed to a complex piece of equipment is important then what? Neurophysiologically speaking (yes, I'm a physician), it is best achieved when the instrument you use is the one you use all the time. So if I'm to have a dive computer which I'll entrust my life, my buddy's life, and even at times, dive master's life with, I'll be much more comfortable doing it if I look at it and work with it at other times as well.
    And, another question just popped up. What's the deal with algorhytms? And I thought I saw that watch face displaying gas amounts. How can it do that without AI?
    Cheers Buddy!

    • @BlackMantaPhotography
      @BlackMantaPhotography  Před 4 lety

      Never a truer word said! Never be complacent with diving - it doesn't matter how much experience you have. Anything can happen to anyone whilst diving, and there are so many factors involved that can cause any diver to have any kind of bad experience. In your case the 'experienced' diver suffered exhaustion - a scary thing to deal with if he'd never experienced it before!
      Anyway - to your other point... as the old saying goes 'practise makes perfect'. The issue with many divers is they have a DC they use only whilst diving. In some cases that may only be once or twice a year, so being familiar with the device is important.
      Algorithms - there are a few different types of algorithms on DC's. They essentially calculate your depth, run rate, and according to the type of gas you are breathing will give you a safe and calculated dive ensuring you do not enter decompression. Buhlmman is the most popular, and commonly found on some of the leading brands.
      And no - that wasn't gas amounts being displayed. You may be confusing the numbers from the altimeter and barometer. You can select what type of gas you are using (% of O2/Nitrox), but the current Garmin Mk1 does not allow you to see the amount of gas you have left in the tank. To do this it would need AI.
      Hope that all makes sense?

    • @muratsinanengin9773
      @muratsinanengin9773 Před 4 lety

      Black Manta Photography of course it does. Thanks a lot!
      There’s a Turkish diver, Savaş Karakaş who makes underwater documentaries. In one he said “the worst risk factor involved in diving is testosterone”. Considering the sex distribution of dive fatalities, it does make sense.
      And that buddy just denied that he’s being exhausted until he suffered a transient ischemic attack in his brain (that happened to him after we surfaced, while swimming back to the dive boat. When you’d think that you’re safe, off the hook. Minutes away from a cup of hot tea. He was lagging and last thing he yelled before passing out was “you go ahead I’m fine”).
      He’d never do that if he had his default judgement up and running down there. He didn’t.

      barronhead so glad to hear they have been useful! Gauge mode should only be used if free diving, or if you only want to use your Descent as an SPG. If you plan to use it as a dive computer you must make sure it’s in single gas mode. Single gas is what you would use for normal single tank recreational diving. Multiple gas is if you are using more than 1 gas mix if you were using more than 1 tank. Hope that makes sense... 👍🏻

    Is it possible to use chest strap heart rate monitor for diving?

    • @BlackMantaPhotography
      @BlackMantaPhotography  Před 3 lety +2

      Great question and thanks for asking...
      The Descent range watches can pair with Garmin heart rate straps for swimming, such as the HRM-Pro, HRM-Swim, and HRM-Tri.
      While Descent watches are designed for diving, the heart rate straps are rated at 5 ATMs only, and its use is not recommended for scuba diving. You might think that although the heart rate straps will go to 50m, they are not tested to engineering standard EN13319 for dive compliance and are not recommended for scuba.
      The HRM-Pro, HRM-Swim, and HRM-Tri are designed for surface open water swimming and pool swimming only.
      You can find more info here... I hope this helps.

    Been using this as my every day watch for a nearly a year now. Had a couple of parachute guys look at the Jump master program, it's kinda pointless. Lots of information during an activity that doesn't generally leave a lot of time to think through variables. The "Tactical" tracker is for ruck marches or more detailed hiking where you're humping for time.
    Overall, I found it a nice device, a little big for my dainty wrist. The screen size a bit small, while the thickness was excessive. Perhaps the MK2 will have AI and wireless charging to help make it more thin.

    Great review, thanks. Is it a dive computer with watch features or a watch with diving app are questions which are defining two different approaches, and is hard to bring them together. Anyway, this is finally a life manager with great diving app - arguing a size is a bit pointless. My two main drawbacks are: maximum brightness is not bright enough - it always looks like it is bit dimmed - I dońt mind wasting battery life faster as long as I dońt need to be charged for expensive battery replacement; and no "no fly time": essential information. Today people travel and plan their time minutewise - for such relatively expensive device, using rule of "24 hours and then you are on a safe side" is not really why I paid money for. I dońt think it is necessary to wait for Mk2 - come on, Garmin, it should be done in one update.

    • @BlackMantaPhotography
      @BlackMantaPhotography  Před 4 lety +1

      Thanks for the great comment... I guess there are varying ways to look at it. It is a life management fitness watch with dive computer facilities, although I believe the people developing the Mk1 weren't divers - I think this is where we'll see a change with the Mk2.
      I didn't find the screen that dim in reality, but would argue the size of the viewable screen is important underwater.
      I did wonder if a software update would solve all of the issues, but can see why a newer version in the Mk2 is required. I absolutely love the Mk1 - thought it was a great device!
      If you haven't seen it, definitely check out this video where I compare the Mk1 with the Teric and the Suunto D5.

      Oh hang on - I'm so sorry!! I've just realised you were talking about the Mk1 and not the MK2i..!!
      It's the MK2i I have on my wrist and has CCR functionality. NOT the Mk1.
      I'm not even sure they still make/sell it do they??

    • @BlackMantaPhotography
      @BlackMantaPhotography  Před 4 lety +1

      Thanks Mark - much appreciated. The GPS doesn't run in the background - it is only activated when you open an app or activity. The 12 days stated by Garmin for battery life will be with screen brightness set to low, but must say, the battery life even with the screen set to brightest is very very impressive. Charging is really quick too - charges in no time! Just for interest I've added a couple of info links below. :)

      Ryan Gentzler I honestly don’t know why, but will assume it impossible otherwise I guess they would have done so - I mean, they have enough people feedback saying it’s the one thing it was missing. However, I do know 100% that the Mk2 will definitely have AI, along with a host of other features! Actually, it’s what I’m hanging out for. Should be pretty special..!!

    • @BlackMantaPhotography
      @BlackMantaPhotography  Před 4 lety

      Thanks for the question. Yes, that's exactly what the Mk1 will be able to do. The device needs an active GPS signal, so you will need to be on the surface for it to work.

    • @BlackMantaPhotography
      @BlackMantaPhotography  Před 3 lety +1

      I’ve thought long and hard about this over the past few weeks.
      If not having AI isn’t a big deal for you then yes, I think it’s definitely still a viable option.
      I loved the Mk1 - I just wished it had AI, other than that it was great!
      With the Mk2 now being out I can see the price dropping, and with Garmin being a huge international multi billion dollar company I can’t see them stopping updates for it.
      The question is whether you’d be happy buying it knowing there was a more improved model out there with AI, larger screen, and more menu options and health apps etc...?

    If you would compare to garmin fenix5 or 6 how would this look? From sport watch features point?

    • @BlackMantaPhotography
      @BlackMantaPhotography  Před 4 lety

      A lot of the features on the Descent can be found on the Fenix, but the Fenix 5 just edges it over the Descent. It has a longer battery life, it's 2.3mm thinner, and it automatically syncs and registers GPS faster. It's also compatible with heart rate monitors and has a low phone battery alert.
      I found this link that will help you to see the true differences.

      Whereas the Fenix 6 is even better. Battery life is 4 days longer, 3.1mm thinner, has a bigger screen size, 3D compass and monitors blood oxygen levels. It also has a better resolution screen - the downside is you can't download maps.

      Most scuba dive computers also double up as free diving computers, so even though you won't be scuba diving I wouldn't avoid them.
