With 16% Earth's gravity, I see good potential for personal human flight on the moon, both inside and outside habitats. It'll be exceedingly fun.

I am thinking underground at first to make it more cost effective if that is a more cost effective way to expand humanity’s knowledge of space.😀

Solar radiation is the main factor most colonization videos overlook. How do you shield against radiation without a magnetosphere?

A Lunar Space Elevator would also be far more possible than one on Earth, plus give us construction insight when the proper technology becomes readily viable for use to build one on Earth. Similar to how the Space Stations we have built around Earth can tell us how to build Space Stations around the Moon, which is still quite far away to travel to. Hopefully we can build these systems soon, not letting this drag out since we likely cannot count on continued Russian engagement in such endeavors.

The moon does not spin in relation to the earth. it is tidally locked. That means that only very few places on the moon will see earthrise because of seasonal variations in the moons orbit. The majority of the moon will either see the earth or not see it.

The moon does wiggle a little bit, so at spots near the lunar South Pole you should be able to witness the earth go slowly over and under the horizon.

Whenever I think of the idea of colonizing the moon, my mind can't help but think of how cities were built in the anime girls last tour in which cities were built in some sort of levels and the inhabitants live in a sort of confine environment. I wonder if one day, if ever humanity manage to land on the moon and build the first habitats, as they expand on the lunar surface, they can apply the same concept of city building as the anime albeit a more confine version as, obviously, the moon had no atmosphere whatsoever thus the layers or levels of city should be air tight and were connected on the surface by some sort of self contained channels or subway systems. Its simply mind tickling to think of such scenario... 😊

      P. S. Had humanity manage to discover the secret behind artificial gravity, the human race would've been one step closer at becoming a multi planetary species. Just overcoming this single obstacle can have a huge impact on the field of space exploration. 😊

Using a mixture of gallium’ aluminum’ and water, all can be found and liberated from the surface of the moon, to make hydrogen using the Grotthuss mechanism with very little power output. Also, after the reaction of the aluminum two the gallium and water the gallium is available for reuse.

It will require underground cities. Huge Solar arrays on the rim that always face the sun. To power the drilling and to melt the walls, floors and ceilings to impervious glass, the only local building material. Daily exercise routines to maintain bone density which will be long and intense. Which means only healthy, fit adults (no babies) can live there. Get really sick and you're fired, back to Earth. It can be done, it should be done as a platform for Space exploration. All life-giving chemicals have to be 100% recycled (oxygen, water, nutrients, etc.) A thousand years from now we may find we are accelerating the moon's escape from our gravity if we develop it just to exploit it, as we have done on Earth. The other problem is return transport re-entry. To date we use distance-eating speed (which will be provided by electro-magnetic launch ramps) and heat panels. That will have to be rethought, by rocket braking and entering our upper atmosphere at speeds closer to 160kph, enabling early deployment of controllable parachutes - to choose landing sites.

  • @owenwilson25

At first you find a lava tube NOT too big, Lave tubes are NOT very solid, Lunar lava tubes are very undisturbed for the past 4 billion years - careful calculations have to be made to estimate the carrying load of their ceilings ; in any event they would need re-enforcement as human habitats. So the first tube settlement needs to be small enough for the expedition to be able to convert to a structurally safe site. On the surface you construct some habitats with windows and egress access to the underground habitats that house the manufacture factories and hydroponic farms that enjoy about 15 days sun-light via light tubes filtered through glass to remove the UV, followed by 15 days of LED lighting. In addition to producing food, telescope mirrors & lenses, the factories need to manufacture building materials for any Lunar or orbital structures that are wanted. Over time the manufacture/farm base can diversify and extend throughout any tubes deemed suitable, each supporting occasional above ground posts/egress points.

We should NEVER colonise it. Firstly a bare unspoilt moon is central to our culture. Simply just aesthetically. But there are cultures like Muslims and Jews for instance who use it to base their lunar calendar. It's also so crucial to navigation in remote regions for the world and for nocturnal animals. As well as it's gravitational pull on the earth affecting our climate.
We humans need to learn to just leave things alone!! At the minimum maybe have an observatory. Even then on the dark side of it so as to not pollute our view of space on death. But LEAVE IT AT THAT!!
