  • Having been out of steam for 5 years, 34070 "Manston" has emerged following the completion of its latest overhaul inside Herston Works; the main heavy engineering workshop of the Swanage Railway.
First steaming in preservation in 2008, 34070 was withdrawn from its last stint in service in August 2017, following a minor collision with 4MT Tank - 80104. The Bulleid made its way to Tyseley for repairs to the frames and for the overhaul to begin, with 34070 returning to Dorset in 2021; entering Swanage Railway's Herston Works for the completion of its overhaul.
34070 was not repainted during this overhaul, with attention instead being given to preserving its current coat of paint, and prioritising the mechanical integrity of the locomotive. As such, "Manston" appears wonderfully weathered for its return to the Swanage Railway, and stands testement to the tireless dedication and hard work demonstrated by all those involved in its overhaul; not least the volunteers and staff of the owners, Southern Locomotives Ltd.
Once 34070 graced the metals of the Swanage Railway, the same low-loader would take 34053 back to Herston Works. 34053 is going in for its own overhaul to commence. This switch involved 34070 regaining its tender from 34053: When 34053 came back to Swanage after the Great Dorset Steam Fair in the summer, it was coupled to 34070's tender to ease shunting. 34053's own tender is still on the Spa Valley Railway.
    Locomotives:
Ex-SR 'Battle of Britain' Class - 34070 "Manston"
    BR Class 08 - 08436 "Beighton"
    BR Class 33 - 33111
Ex-SR Rebuilt 'Battle of Britain' Class - 34053 "Sir Keith Park"
All footage filmed on Wednesday the 2nd of November 2022.

I used to travel up to school from Woking to Waterloo in the 1960s behind these lovely machines. Great to see so many in preservation thanks to people like you.

MANSTON was the loco that hauled our portion of the Atlantic Coast Express from Exeter to Ilfracombe in 1962. Great to see she is still operational.

Excellent record of this move and great to see 34070 returning to action. We really do owe a debt of gratitude to the people at SLL and Swanage for keeping these amazing machines alive.

That always seemed to be one of the best unrebuilt Bulleids. Ran like a sewing machine. Particularly impressed on its visit to the NYMR.

There’s something about a Bullied. It’s great to see them still around and being looked after. Am old enough to remember the Golden Arrow, The Night Ferry Thanet Belle and the like, always a Bullied Pacific turn. Thanks for the video. Nice close ups of the running gear. All the best. Mick.

They're really distinctive looking engines. I went on the Golden Arrow and also on the train to Bournemouth pulled by these. They were very reliable over the years.

I was taken as a small boy in 66 and 67 by my late father to mp 31 between Brookwood and Farnborough just after the Alton branch left the main line. We saw the last of the Bulleids and class 5's. I am still interested in railways.

Bulleid heaven!!!! Glad you got this in the bag, really interesting behind the scenes shots. There's always good stuff coming out of that Herston Works door👍👍👍👍 And I've learnt something - never knew preserved locos had TOPS numbers, presumably for mainline working, so thanks for that cab shot Matthew🙂🙂

Thanks very much, Bob. Was something of a happy accident / reluctant compliance on my end, to be available on the day and film it.
Steam locomotives do have TOPS numbers allocated, when they have either ran or been towed on the mainline.

    • @TheSouthernerYTChannel
      @TheSouthernerYTChannel  Před rokem +4

Other way around. The tender that was behind 34053, is 34070's. When 34053 came back to Swanage after the Great Dorset Steam Fair, it was coupled to 34070's tender to ease shunting. 34053's tender is still on the Spa Valley Railway. I have since updated the description with this information.
It will be repainted at a later date.

Herston is not rail linked to the Swanage Railway. Taking locomotives by road is an operational necessity.
