I did some quick testing tonight, taking shots of the moon. You just need to use pattern metering rather than spot metering (don’t tap the screen to set exposure and focus). Pretty sure that’s the reason your shots are so underexposed. I’ve seen some absolutely phenomenal astro shots with a 14 Pro Max, so there’s nothing wrong with this phone. If spot metering used to work fine for astro on the 13 with iOS 15, then that specific bug should be reported.
How would I do that?
@@trpczsweat2477 Just don’t tap the screen.
Is there any difference with Iphone 14?
@@ruka88 The software is the same, so the same should apply.
Could you help me with a focus problem I am having? If I try to capture the sky for example on a x1, x2 or x3 zoom it just goes blurry. Then the macro things comes on and the quality looks horrible cause of course the sky is not for macro photography but at least is in focus! If I tap to remove macro it goes blurry and completely out of focus again. What am I doing wrong??
My pixel 6 has been producing mind blowing results. I'm in the Himalayas and couldn't get more clearer skies anywhere else! I do have 12 pro Max but I'd rather leave astro to pixel 👍. Thanks for this video. I'll wait for 15pro!
Im flying to Norway next week and Im hiking the national parks. Cant wait to take photos with my Pixel 6 Pro.
The pixel is hard to beat with Astro thats for sure.
@@ShayneMostyn have you tried the Vivo x70/80 pro for Astro shots?
exposure time is 10s on iphone 14 (metadata shows that) while there is 30s on iphone 13
username checks out
Keep us updated Shayne! I took some shots on my 14 Pro last weekend. I was pretty satisfied with the results, granted it was still a bit more bright because the moon was out.
The iphone 14 camera has been fucked for most people since launch, they just released ios 16.0.2 which is meant to have fixed these issues
I actually like the camera, especially video. Im doing an update at the moment. We shall see. I would say its an easy fix via an update.
honestly as a person who isn’t that technical when it comes to astrophotography and just want to see the sky with their phone it’s not terrible. you can see the milky way which is cool.
I have heard that the 14pm is having some issues with the camera, especially that shaking bug in third party camera apps, but maybe there are some others, such as the ones you're experiencing, and I think they're going to push out a software update next week to fix them, hopefully that will make the 14pm meet our expectations for low light/astro
The update is already out. The shaking has been fixed.
Update resolved
8:30 I did some quick searching through my night photos and found ISO all the way up to 6000 without ever even trying long exposure times, so i'm pretty sure there might just be some setting going wrong in the tests :)
No it was resolved after a software update. I did an updated video
This doesn’t surprise me. The pixel diameter is smaller than on the 13. That quad pixeling isn’t producing the results that a single larger pixel would. I could be proven wrong with the next iOS update but until I see the results I am reluctant to let go of my 12 Pro Max and it’s low light capability for great stage photos on both the main and telephoto cameras.
i think this pretty much matches what mr.whosetheboss said as well in his video about the iphone 14 camera, they probably need to do some software updates until this new bigger sensor is as good as the old ones, there is an update to my phone today so ill check what that includes
Weird, I just used nightmode on my 14 Pro, with ProRaw on, and got 6400 ISO. There definitely seem to be a lot of weird camera bugs. Shayne, is your 13 Pro on IOS 16?
There will be an update for it... Just wait
I also did a nightlife shot of the stars with my 14 pro max and I got 4000iso. So yes there are definitely bugs this early on into the release. I was on update 16.01 for anyone wondering
I don’t get it, is 6400 bad?
@@biggestboolerbaibhav 6400 is very bad if there's light pollution.
@@RR3DS is there no way to manually set iso and all that on iPhone? I could do it on my old Galaxy S10+ - a little sad I can’t do that on my iPhone
I've only taken a couple of astro shots here because I normally don't see a single star! Just gone back to them to find out exif data on my iphone12pm on 13 August. Set on nightmode on a tripod the ISO was 2000 and shutter 1 sec. I'll have to try again to get longer exposure but may have to wait another 8 years before I see any more stars haha!
The metadata is showing a 10-second exposure instead of the 30-second max that the phone can do when it detects it’s absolutely still on a tripod. Update the phone and give it another whirl. A bit disappointing that you missed a crucial yet basic detail like that
13 and 14 are the same in this regard. They both shoot 10 seconds max. On a tripod, they do the same but merge 3x10 second shots. The metadata only ever shows 10 seconds. Thats the way it has always been. A bit disappointing that you missed a crucial yet basic detail like that...
A new type of sensor. Different results? No way. 🤯
Pittsburgh Pirates fans of the world unite. I'm getting a 14 Pro Max this week and need to try astro out!
Thanks Shayne, will wait for more photos with and without software update(s) 😉
There is an update its doing as I type this. The release notes mention nothing about low light.
Maybe because screen recording was on? Perhaps it was reducing performance to record the screen. I have the 12 Pro Max, and would upgrade if astrophotos were a massive improvement
Something is wrong, there are others where the 14 pro max out performs the 13 pro max. Hopefully you figure out the problem as i love your astro videos.
Shane
You are right. There are some exposure issues with the IPhone 14. Maybe some software updates will rectify those. I am more than happy with my 13 Pro Max..
Why did you not try with the full 48mp? From what I’ve seen that pixel binning doesn’t work all that well, but in the 48mp mode it looks superior.
Edit: I’ve read in one of your comments night mode doesn’t work in 48mp.. that’s such a shame I hope they fix that.
You can probably use a third party app for that and shoot in that full 48MP + your choice of ISO.
@@alex.muntean I tried ProShot at 48MP lots of the manual controls go. 12MP and I can do exposures as long as I’d like, I did a 15min one. But on 48MP it’ll only allow auto for some reason, hopefully they just need to update it
I’m going to try Procam 8 in a few hours - wish me luck. Comparing the S21, 13PM and 14PM tonight
Shayne, this may be a long shot, but have you checked in Settings > Camera > Preserve Settings, if you disable Creative Controls or Exposure Adjustment, does that help? Do you have the same settings as in the 13 PM?
Exact same settings in the 13PM. I have the updated software on there now. A quick test suggest it may have fixed it. Ill test tonight.
@@ShayneMostyn that’s great news! Can’t wait to see the results!
I currently have the 13 pro max and an unboxing video of it on my channel. I think ima sit this one out and upgrade next year and I want the black one!!
I did 3 Astro shots last night on my 14 pro max, I got a 5000iso, 10,000, and a 12,500. Only difference I can see is I didn’t tap to focus and I have the pro raw set to 48 even though it bins to 12. Not sure if that setting makes any difference but maybe try not tapping to focus.
Why was it 10 seconds on iPhone 14 Pro vs. 30 seconds on iPhone 13 Pro? On the note about cases and charging bricks - yes, the case changed because the camera bump changing is understandable, forcing you to get a new case. But the charging brick not being included makes sense for the environment - the 20w charger will work for several years; you could even still use the 5W charger that was sent out with iPhones for years (but now battery tech has changed that it could handle much more). Less charging bricks, less waste.
Thats not the case mate. both phones shoot 10 second maximum. Night mode on a tripod takes 3x10 second images and blends them together. The metadata from both phones demonstrates this.
Hi Shane thanks for another helpful video, regarding the iPhone 14 pro max. I was going to get that phone for Astrophotography but watching your video has helped me to stick with my current phone the iPhone 13 Pro Max. I’m just wondering if the Samsung Ultras are better for astrophotography. I will watch your other videos to find out. Again thank you Shane 👍🏽🙏😊
Thanks for the video and eagerly waiting for your update.
With larger sensor and pixel size could even a slight possible movement be causing a problem?
Maybe the point when you hit the shutter
A similar problem when we move from low or mid-level mirrorless /DSLR to a higher-end one with more pixels
I have tried mine yesterday and my iso was between 1000-12500 so clearly there is a bug somewhere with the iphone 14 pro, looks like the iso improves if you don’t shoot raw
took a photo last night and my iso was at 12500 so thats quite strange his was that low
Been waiting for this video from you! Cheers!
ProRaw in iPhone 14 Pro is not as same as in the 13 pro.
When you visualize a photo in the gallery ,shot on raw and iPhone 13 it will show the photo “auto edited” until you tap on edit and then you will see the real proRaw photo.
In the iPhone 14 the proRaw directly shows the real raw image that need to be edited to get the best results
I did edit them...
@@ShayneMostyn fine! It was just a friendly information I thought could be nice to know 😊
Do you edit the pics at all? Also when it ride turning the sharpness up and pressing edit. It showed the stars more vibrant at first then just reset to how it was before.
great job ! telling us that 14 pro 48 megapixel sensor is not for astrophotography..
It's pretty well known that Apple have had issues with noise performance vs the 13PM. I'm sure we'll find out soon enough when Apple release a software update.
what phone mount is that on your tripod?
Thanks for great vids, I bought a Pixel 6 Pro for easy astrophotography when I go camping.
I updated my 14 Pro Max to iOS 16.1 beta 2 and I never got ISOs that low at night, in ProRaw with the exposure down it went as high as 50,000
So bummed. Hope it's fixed with software or a 3rd party as I was looking forward to an improvement not a reduction in quality. Thanks and keep us updated if things change Shayne.
There’s an app called Even Longer that could work!
really glad i found your channel. Thanks for your work!
Lux, maker of the Halide camera app for iPhones, reports a top ISO of 12,768 for the iPhone 14 Pro's main camera compared with 7,616 on the 13 Pro.
A software update fixed this mate. I have an updated video
i looked it up and the iphone 14 pro max is capable of more iso than the 13. the main camera of the 14 has just over 12 k iso. the main cam of 13 has just over 7k
Hi dud i like your videos.... I just want to let you know that Huawei mate 50 pro is out now and they said is a beast so i hope you will try it soon. So good job sir and keep going
Wi be waiting to see what happens tonight with your adventure. I was waiting on the iPhone 14
Coat ✅ hat ✅ tripod ✅
That bloody beautiful beard ✅
HAHA thanks mate
Oh damn 13PM for the win 🥇
Could you try with reeflex and see?
My $500 pixel 6 crushes it at astrophotography.
Of course. Its pretty hard to beat the Pixel for astro.
I have been waiting for a astrophotography video
I suspect there will be more as they fix it with software updates
Can you maybe please check vivo x80 pro? Im want to choose betwen s22 ultra and the vivo
My Vivo X70 Pro Plus is far better than the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra so buy a Vivo X80 Pro, you won't be disappointed.
Heard the software is messed up on iPhone 14 camera
Im doing an update on it at the moment. We shall see.
@@ShayneMostyn according to specs iso should be increased to max of 3072
Good effort with the 13 mate .
I’ll never understand why we bother with astrophotography on a smart phone. Even a micro four thirds sensor will murder them. Guess it’s a great point of entry for ppl to actually want to do astrophotography Btw there are apps so you can fine tune settings. Maybe review that for us? ThT said I find this odd;y interesting. You have a great vibe.
Asked and answered mate. Its a great place for people to start.
Ah it is a bit of fun trying to get the most out of your cameras , and to be fair , smart phones are the cameras we always have in our pockets , im in melbourne Australia in the burbs , and unfortunately clear starry skys are very much are rarity , and light pollution is a real bugger too , but we still try ;) .
Why you dont use a Better Photography app like ProCam, Slow Shutter, Moment, Obscura 3? Stock app is limited :/
Hello, I'm looking for a phone to do astrophotography, which one do you recommend? I was thinking about the p50
Disappointed to see how poorly the new iPhones rolled out with their cameras. Between the social media app vibrations and lack of significant improvement with the 0.5 & 3X lenses. I’ll be holding on to my 13 Pro Max for another year.
To be honest, ive been really happy with them, then I shot astro...
If all you do is low light then absolutely stay with 13. But the 14 does have an improvement across the board on other camera features.
How can I take good photographs and videos of the upcoming solar eclipses with the iPhone?
Is this with the latest software update with the camera improvements?
Its updating at the moment. The release notes dont mention anything about this, but lets see. Ill be testing it out tonight.
Sounds great look forward to the video!
You need Huawei’s latest Mate 50 Pro.
Can you do astrophotography on normal iPhone 14 and make a video of it.……? Please 🙏🙏
Which phone will be better for night photography ?
Very interesting video! Where are these photos taken?
You should try an iPhone 14 which has a better and brighter camera (F/1.5) and larger 1.90 µm pixel than 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max (F/1.8 and very small and dark 1,22 µm pixel)
No this was fixed with a software update. I did another video shortly after this one.
Yes, I know. But if you can, compare 14 and 14 pro max
Pls I Beg of you make an editing tutorial
Why did you change to 12 megapixels instead of the 48? 🤔 Take one with the 48 megapixels. And also, try to edit the raw and bring out the shadows.
Night shot can only 12 megapixels
HI shayne is it better to buy s22 ultra or upcoming 7 pro for Manual o pro mode photography than Iphone14pro??? Please answer
Eu vou comprar uma câmara propia para astrofotografia e ponto final!
With these night modes, could you get better results even further by taking a dozen or so and stacking them together? I know that is a bit more advanced shooting method, would you or have you already dones something like this? and if not could/would you be willing to give it a shot?
Can you stack them on iPhone?
@@sashaleela273 not directly, you would need to import them to the relevant software designed for stacking images, I have not attempted this route yet so I do not know the sofware, but it is just a case of capturing as many photos as you wish then doing the rest on computer
@@jasonlee4267 thanks !
Try the 48mp option
Maybe it will be better with the software update they just released.
Literally everything you've done here is not intended for astrophotography. The iPhone 14 Pro can take amazing astrophotography images, but you're using a mode of the camera that is literally intended to take photos of terrestrial subjects, and that is what it does best. To do the job you need to use an app that allows full manual control. That you don't know how to use the device? Not Apple's fault.
Why U changed 14 pro settings proraw from 48 to 12 megapixels?
Thank you 😊
So from what I have read on your replies you may have fixed the issue?
this is bad? my god that’s absolutely phenomenal considering I live in ontario that’s littered in light polution
It was. It was not nearly as good as the iPhone 13PM. A software update has fixed it though.
Tutorial on how I can set my iPhone 14 pro max like this?
Please make a comparison of promax 14 and s22 ultra in astrophotography and nightlapse
The 14 pro is capable of reaching 12,700 iso compared to “only” 7,600 in the 13 pro. Definitely a software bug. Look for the the lux.camera article with the specs. CZcams doesn’t allow me to post it here in the comments
So Android is not alone when releasing stuff that isn't ready for prime time.
Oh hell no. Infact the 13 was similar with the cinematic mode. It seemed to get better with updates.
how about third party camera apps?maybe better than original camera
Why does my iPhone 14 pro max only go up to 1s max and not 30s max
Use pro mode in Xiaomi smartphone camera,by setup maximum shutter speed and maximum iso,you can click the same photo at night😃😃😃😃
Wait how do u get 30 second exposure time
I only go upto 10 even when I’m doing pro raw
It’s better iPhone 13 pro max?
My 14 pro max allow only 10 seconds long exposure! How you set 30 seconds?
Gday @RuncisPro, to get 30 seconds, the phone will need to be on a tripod. Once its on a tripod, leave it for a moment and it will change to 30 seconds.
Why no 48 MP shot? That’s some serious disappointment. I would have liked to see the difference.
Because u cant 48 low light only 12
It pixel bins in low light.
How many chargers do you really need to buy????
thank you for this comparison
you have to see the updates no doubt; where the 13 has been done for quite some time
Oh of course. I suspect this will be fixed in an update.
3:44 isn’t camera lens dirty seeing your fingers all over it
What is that icon that looks like a ruler beside the night mode icon? 1:53
Exposure
Any thoughts on the 15 pro max for astrophotography
I suspect it will be good. Will be able to confirm next week!
Could it be the quad pixel technology?
I tried to take a Timelapse of the northern lights, my god that was disappointing, it could not focus right on normal and dark, like someone switched on and off the lights. But I think it’s the iOS 16 that’s the problem. Have done this before with the 12pro and iOS 15 with no problem, then right before i got the 14pro the iOS16 came, and the problems. Don’t know if it’s fixed yet with the new update.
my one not going above 1 sec?
The iPhone 14 pro should be able to go to an ISO of like 12000, you might have to use a 3rd party photo app tho
Shayne......we need the MOON pics review...... I think it's horrible..... HELP
Looks like it was still shooting 12 mp instead of 48 mp
Hello could you test with Xiaomi mi 11 ultra please?
Do same on regular iphone 13 and 14
I only found that I can adjust the ISO in Lightroom all the way to 10000
wow that's really disappointing, surely they could have sorted that out before they released the phone
Unless I missed something, you didn't try it at 48 megapixels. Please try that. Also, it drives me crazy that yu always say 13 pro max. The "max" is irrelevant because the max and the regular pro have the same cameras, it was only different with the 12 models.
Sorry mate, no night mode at 48MP. The sensor bins the pixels to 12MP in low light automatically. Cant override it either. I call it the Max.... because its the Max.
@@ShayneMostyn no night mode at 48? Why upgrade? Haha. Vivo x80 pro here I come.
Could the smaller aperture another possible cause for the worse effect on 14 than 13?
It looks like its sorted out now with the latest software update
can you do it with xiaomi 12s ultra please
If you have the 48MP option turned on for RAW photos, then you will notice that the night mode is much worse. Either try turning RAW off or changing the RAW MP count from 48 to 12.
Tried both.
I have 14 pro max some reason camera is always blowing highlights
Will it work in citys, or will the light pollution get us and won't be able to see the stars.
