  • I've tried my Salsa Timberjack as a 29er and as a 27.5 plus bike, but how does it ride if I mix them and run it as a mullet bike? In this video, I take my hardtail to the steep and rocky trails of Copper City outside of Three Forks, Montana and test it out with two different wheel sizes.

    Another fantastic video. Great riding and great articulation of what you're feeling. It's egressing to see someone not just praising the mullet in all areas because it's the latest fad. Great work, a very trustworthy review.

      Thanks man! I actually wasn't planning on doing a mullet video, but some viewers saw your review and wanted to know my thoughts on it since you enjoyed it so much.

      @@RideYearRound I'm not usually a mullet fan, but with how awkward the 29er steering is on this bike, I felt like the mullet setup improved the bike, especially for high speed or steep trails.

    I've got my rigid Karate Monkey as a plus mullet with 2.8 Rekons. I freaking love it. Singlespeed for around home, and gears for bikepacking. It's the most versatile bike I've ever rode.

    Yip. I been contemplating this mullet idea for Winter abuse. Narrow tires handle better in snow-clogged road conditions. Fat bike tires, have little stability and tons of resistance when five or more inches of snow are on the roads. Have even noticed people on gravel bikes gettin' plenty of traction on snow-covered roads. And commuting to/from work is always before the plows are out. Hard-packed snow on roads, is nearly impossible to gain traction. Even on a fat bike. Recently installed a Zeron 36 fork to my 2019 Rangefinder SLX & a syntace W40 650b rim. Bring-on Winter.

    Im looking at the 2023 Timberjack. I havent found much on this setup so thanks for the content. I ride flow trails and low to moderate jumps. Since you have experience on different setups, what would you recommend? Full 27.5 plus , 29er or Mullet?

    I’ve been switching back and forth just trying different thing. I started with 27.5+ front and rear. Then went to a mullet . My particular tire wheel combo was a difference of 5/8 of an inch from center of hub from the ground. The bike felt ok but not to confidence inspiring. So I measured my handle bar center from ground with the 27.5+ . Then when I went back to the 29 I lowered the handle bars accordingly and that made a big difference. Going to try and lengthen the wheel base next .

      @@RideYearRound Seemed to me the way I had it, front tire would wash out easier. But since I lowered the bars not so much anymore.

    Cool video (as usual), and timely too!
    I'm about to upgrade the fork on my 2019 Timberjack XT (from a RockShox Sektor to a Fox 34 Rhythm) and was considering mullet-izing it as well for winter riding. What year is your Salsa? Wondering if it's got the same geometry as my 2019...

      This was a 2021 with a lot more aggressive geo. I think mullets make a lot of sense if you’re doing a lot of steep downhill riding, but otherwise I’d probably just pick a size haha.

    I think a Mullet Plus Hardtail would be a great setup myself, I may one day try it. I love my plus hardtail I have now with 27.5 x 2.8's

      @@RideYearRound I experimented with tire pressures for several months. I don't ride alot of flow, but more technical trails. I weigh 190 lbs and settled on 18 psi fr/ 20 psi rear, I have yet to ding a rim and the bike climbs well

    What wheel/tire did you use in front and in back did you use stock 27.5”+ tire? I am trying to take my SLX 2021 and make it a mullet I want 29x2.6 in front, what do you recommend?

    • @RideYearRound
      @RideYearRound  Před rokem

      Mine was actually the 29er version to begin with so I was running the stock 29x2.6” on a 30mm rim up front with a 27.5x2.8” Maxxis Rekon+ on an i35 rim in the rear.

    Not being rude but I have to laugh a bit on this massive difference between 29@27.5 it really equates to about 5mm. As far as the wheel getting caught up don’t agree. That caught up symptom is solved by getting up out of the bike and moving around same as 29. I roll a 29x2.2 continental fast tire on a ht and a 27.5x3.0 front 27.5x2.8 rear on full squish. I experience more front wheel chocking and hanging up the rear on my ht by far. My plus tire rolls significantly better than the 29 when I’m not on smooth granite trail here in Az and even strava times show slower dh on the ht than the full squish. The 29 is faster but you can’t tell me me there is a dramatic difference if I had 27.5x2.2. The 29x2.2 requires better more exact line pick to a softball size object. The plus allows me to go higher up on trail walls gaining more gravity speed and so on. My 29er is a 30LB hard tail running a tube in the rear. The 27.5 is full suspension at 34+ lbs. I’m more notable in being tired muscling weight around than my 29 hard tail. My times are usually equal or slower on the hardtail because the dramatic difference in speed with the larger width tires and full squish increases the faster rolling over every anything and pedaling of the lighter bike. I noticed half the pedal strikes on my full squish by running 29’s do to the 5mm height increase but for speed on it not really. Both 29 and 27.5+ on the full squish are minions front and rear. Especially with the increase flooding we had in Az over the summer and the huge depositing of granite and sand the 29 is only good at high speed for short periods. The plus all around is better by far and gets caught...up well not much of anything. In Az we have little groomed soft trails. It’s all eroded. So I think this dramatic talk in this huge hang up is what’s my content for the week. The bike is super rad I test putted your exact salsa last night @ my LBS very nice especially for a low stack geo number for me I like my bars in my chest per say. Stay well and true my friend nice rig.

      In this video I’m running 29x2.6 up front with a 27.5x2.8 in the rear which results in around 30mm of difference in height and noticeably different ride feel. A 29x2.2 will be almost identical to a 27.5x2.8/3.0 though so that’s probably why you’ve enjoyed the plus tires so much…same rollover but wider contact patch.
