A classic and iconic performance from Everton, thrashing Coventry 6-0 with the help of a Bob Latchford hat-trick and a Dave Thomas wing-wizard master-class
44 yrs ago. Remember that great tv-broadcasted game to the danish viewers. The day I became a blues fan. And still am despite poor conditions according to the good times from the mid 80s.
Thomas only received 8 caps for England. He joins that long list of flair players - Rodney Marsh, Worthington, Hudson, Osgood, Bowles, Currie etc.. who hardly got any caps. No wonder England failed to qualify for the World Cup in 74 and 78.
Davey Tomas could drop a ball on a sixpence from 40yrds away. 4 assists in this game, and probably over 75% assists for all the goals Everton scored that season.
It was a very good and entertaining Everton team Thomas played in, but like the West Brom team of roughly the same time, they were destined never to win a trophy.
Reliving some great moments from that era, couldn't agree more about Dave Thomas brilliant winger, he must have had a huge number of assists for Bob Latchford that season, how much would those 2 be worth nowadays?, Football was so much better in those days, none of this play acting and cheating that drives me mad now
Tony Lathom: You mean 'crosses' let's leave the 'Americanized 'Assists' for the modern, crappy, money driven cheating version of the game we're stuck with today. Anyway I was at the game. Brilliant. In that era we used to give Coventry and, ironically, Chelsea a good hiding on a regular basis. Sigh!
+Graham Clayton .......big Bobby Latchford would slot right into our attack no problem!........a real centre forward....(take note Lukaku)......💙C.O.Y.B......
Brilliant Everton side. Thomas tearing down the left wing constantly putting balls into the box that Latchford put away with extraordinary consistency throughout that 77/78 season. Came a bit undone on Boxing day when they were beaten 2-6 at home by Man Utd.
peterc: Yeah and I was working in St Helens with a load of Man Utd supporters and was knocking around with a girl who was one of 'them' as well. You never let me forget did you Irene.
I was in the bullens road with my brother and his mate and remember this vividly, 9 years old...and watching a masterclass in wing play and finishing from dave thomas and the great bob latchford...fantastic
From Lartington. Usually see him in Clarendons with his guide dog Hannah. He could easily swap wings and place a ball on a sixpence with either foot. Great player, top bloke all round.
Yes and we had Brian Labone before Lyon’s. Great Evertonian and great man. If he hadn’t refused to put off his wedding day the same date as the World Cup final, he would have been in the team instead of Charlton!
Late on in the game, me Dad said to me “come on son, let’s go they’ll be no more goals now and we can miss the rush” Got home singin 5-0, 5-0 to my sister, a red, “6-0” she said, “you can’t even count”. Never forgiven him for me missing Bobby’s third!!!
Dave Thomas...what a great player. We were so lucky at Pompey to have him play for us.

What a winger Dave Thomas was....Brilliant

@@johnt7630 Four QPR legends in that number... goes to show you
I believe that he rarely wore football boots. Preferring to wear pimp soled trainers whenever he could.
No shiinnies incredible player
Best Everton side

What a forward Bob Latchford was 👏👏👏
Dave Thomas. wat a player proud to be related to him.

How England could have done with a winger like Dave Thomas last night.

This was my 1st everton game.
I was in the "street end ". Great stuff!!!......Bobby Latchford could definitely walk on water!....honest I saw him!!....😜
And that characteristic goal celebration!
+Graham Clayton .......big Bobby Latchford would slot right into our attack no problem!........a real centre forward....(take note Lukaku)......💙C.O.Y.B......

I think they finished 3rd that year....what a team they were.

Still the best Everton side of the 1970s 77 to 79 come on Everton 💙💙💙💙 y
Some things just don't change - We still defend like that to this day.
Was at that game, Coventry were riding high themselves at the time
Cov fan here I was there we had a decent side then and you absolutely battered us.
Yeah...Everton were ON FIRE 🔥 for that game!...💙
Was there, Park End, brilliant Latchford, brilliant match. Happy days.
I was in the bullens road with my brother and his mate and remember this vividly, 9 years old...and watching a masterclass in wing play and finishing from dave thomas and the great bob latchford...fantastic
I well remember the game where Thomas and Wood squared up to each other at the Street end and came very close to a punch up!
Wow. Dave Thomas. Unplayable
I saw him in Morrisons, Barnard Castle last week.
Yes he’s from around there. Greatest crosser of the ball I’ve ever seen! Only player comes close is my favourite Everton player, Trevor Steven.

I have the shirt george wood wore in this game at home
Bramley Moore. If they don’t put back in the D’s and give a concession to the Goodison supper bar I’m not going....
And we love our georgie wood !!!
And we love our Maxie Wall.
Every time the Coventry hard men foul Thomas...Everton score from the free kick!!!
Remember it like yesterday with me mate Franny Harcombe in The Paddock!
Mt first season supporting Everton. 👍
Lyons 🦉 legend best captain in the history of our club .
He would run through walls get up and do it again and again untill the final whistle 💪
Yes and we had Brian Labone before Lyon’s. Great Evertonian and great man. If he hadn’t refused to put off his wedding day the same date as the World Cup final, he would have been in the team instead of Charlton!
@@martinkulkarni3569 Wll said sir Labone was class The great Gerd Muller of Germany said he was best defender Lyon was not good lacked skills
6 nil and even Pearson scored!!
Remember that brown Coventry shirt?
Except that was the red one.
Wales had a similar looking kit at the same time.
How the hell this Everton team never won any silverware I'll never know...
many English players of the period never got to play in a World Cup
What a tonking.
Ooh ooh mr peeveley
Why did we sell Dave Thomas ffs
Can't understand why we didn't win it that year
Forest and the Dark Side were more consistent over the season. We tailed off badly after the new year.
Yeah we give it away that season...💙
Late on in the game, me Dad said to me “come on son, let’s go they’ll be no more goals now and we can miss the rush”
Got home singin 5-0, 5-0 to my sister, a red, “6-0” she said, “you can’t even count”.
Never forgiven him for me missing Bobby’s third!!!
Everton should never have sacked Bingham,,, Lee was an idiot who was out of his depth He was like Moyes could not handle star players
MAN.COVENTRY DEFENDES POORLY SO.MANY TIMES IN THE SEVENTIES AND EIGHTIES.LOST 2-8 AT SOUTHAMPTON BUT ALSO DREW 5-5 THERE ONCE!
