Having contacted Pacific Cross, Cigna and others it is important to realize that, though most countries honor these plans, the United States has a limited time period such as 90 days in which it would honor such a plan (for visitation purposes) as, the medical costs in the USA are much higher than most countries throughout the world. Great information, Pea, as always!

My wife and I (both Seniors) were insured with Pacific Cross. I abandoned it because of my understanding of pre-existing conditions. My wife is still insured, she was admitted 2x in hospital and Pacific Cross was up to his worth. Excellent service. A representative of Pacific Cross even came to the Chong Hua hospital in Cebu to to assist when checking in for an operation. All expenses paid.

Pea, thanks for your work. This is some important stuff. While in the Philippines, I hung around hospitals all the time...not really for me, but because some of my best friends are doctors. I was awaken at the activity that went on in the hospitals. In Bohol there are around a dozen or so hospitals...and they are all very busy. Not only with locals, but expats also....mostly because of renting a motor and crashing it because they didn't learn about Filipino driving skills. Insurance is a high priority...or the expat better have a lot of cash if something happens.
I'd like to know more about healthcare in that how it works when you are sick and injured... like where do you go, who treats you, and how the system works. Not healthcare insurance, just the system... In my small experience, it is far below what we expect in the west (especially when you are in the provinces). I don't have any experience in the bigger cities. My wife hurt herself when we lived in Malaybalay, Mindanao, and we had to go to the hospital. They don't really do triage, taking the worst patients first. They just send you to a location in the hospital depending on your health issue. I also feel like the doctor was just going through the motions, not giving individual service (meaning every problem has similarities but can be different between individual patients...). So, it's like an assembly line... you get in line, you tell the doctor your problem, and they give you a generic diagnosis without asking questions or getting specific information, and that's it. I'm sure they are wrong very often because there is no attention to detail. Get people in and out seems to be the goal. It is one of the main reasons we live in the USA and not Philippines.
I don't know about Doctors and nurses who practice in the Philippines, however if they are similar to The Filipino medical professionals I have met and worked with here in the US I have no concerns about those professionals in the Philippines.
I have been going to the Philippines for over 25 years and my observation is that if you go to a reliable Hospital, you will receive excellent care. The doctors and nurses are both very knowledgeable and caring.
I think the Filipina Pea is offering the whole package. Doesn't she has a friend, that is lawyer.......? You just need to use her service too, to fight fight back the insurer. (^-^)

Thank you for the great info. My wife found me unconscious by the beach in Masbate Province. No ambulance was available. It took her 2 hours to find someone who could drive me to the Doctors Hospital in Masbate City - 45 minutes away. My private hospital room was almost as good as a small town hospital room in the us, and the care I received was outstanding. Four days in the hospital came to about $990 US. I had PhilHealth, and that brought it down to about $668.
I've gone to the dentist in Manila, and he did a good job for 6 times less expensive than in my country. But honestly, i would be king of reluctant to have any surgery in the philippines except in case of emergency... While I watched the documentary about Dr. Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital, i was so shocked that I cried. And i really rarely cry... I hope other hospitals are better than this one...
@@ateam6486 So, dental care is good there in DM, and Cebu sounds like? Ive went to Mexico before and it was a lot cheaper than the US, but you're saying 8 teeth for 60 bucks? I might come just for that, and I only need a filling! But actually its between 2 teeth and in the US they're telling me I need 2 root canals and crowns for $1000 each tooth (which seems to be the favorite price here), and it doesn't even bother me, just want filling between them.
My cousin from Australia had an emergency detached retina surgery at St. Luke in Manila & they screw it. Australian doctors said it's irrepairable. He lost his peripheral vision & St. Luke is supposed to be world class.😂

I work in healthcare and I assure you the problem is not that people don’t care. The problems are extreme levels of bureaucracy and layers of socialism. Healthcare workers feel helpless in a crazy system that grows crazier every year, with ever more unrealistic expectations and largely unfunded mandates. Nothing drives up the cost of healthcare like politicians and others making promises they cannot possibly keep. PI healthcare, by contrast, appears to be much more capitalistic as it was in the US 50-70 years ago. I hope PI can find a way to modernize care delivery without adopting everything that went wrong in the west. Not sure if that is possible though.

Have been using Pacific Cross cover for many years, luckily never had a claim, so don’t know if they come thru when needed. The one thing I have observed with Philippine Doctors, Surgeons and Specialists is that their medical training and certification is lightweight by International standards. Also perhaps because they are overworked, visiting a few clinics weekly, they tend to rush their diagnosis with minimal testing and default towards operations rather than as a last resort. So, if you do have a serious problem, recommend getting more detailed tests (like colored ct scans) and sending that data overseas for a second opinion.
@@joewilliams7783 Don't know, but I am pretty sure that the patient pays the Hospital/Medical bills and then gets reimbursed in stages by the Insurance company once all the paperwork has been processed.
@@spidermanspiderman9910 I think it's a bit more than just an opinion. Have been living in the Philippines for 20 years and love it. But the "fact" that Philippine trained doctors have to go thru retraining and certification in UK/USD/Canada/Australia, is more than an opinion Many Doctors end up working as Nurses. Many Nurses end up as medical assistants in retirement homes in those countries until retrained. Many of the best Doctors here in the Philippines, ended up working overseas for many years getting retrained, before returning home. We all know that the Philippine education system is not well funded, forced to take shortcuts to put people to work and we do our best to fill in the Gaps. That's why I advise a second opinion from overseas, if you have a serious concern

I traveled from Cebu city to Tagbilaran, Bohol on the hydrofoil and it was amazing!! Saw the creepy big snake, the cave pool, and painted church. Alano white sands is where I spent my honeymoon with my amazing Filipina wife. A truly magical week in the most picturesque place I'd ever been with the nicest people I'd ever met!!
I checked prices and found Pacific Cross was indeed cheaper than Cigna and Aetna for the same coverage, paid yearly. In addition I like the fact that Pac Cross renews regardless of age, and also covers travel worldwide. You can choose to reduce your premium by excluding more expensive countries. And they offer travel insurance and rental car insurance. Well done Pea!
Thank you -- extremely informative video on Health Plans for the Philippines and the World. I took notes. The issue with Americans who are age 65 or over, most are covered under Government Medicare Part A (Hospitalization) and Part B (Outpatient Doctor Care) Insurance. Medicare Insurance only pays 80% of costs. Then most buy a Medicare Supplement (Gap Insurance) for the other 20%, and both together, theoretically, will pay 100% of all medical costs. I had 3 major eye surgeries, and paid a total of less than $100.00. Part D is medicines, and that is extra you have to buy a pharmacy plan for pills, etc. HOWEVER, When you move Out of the Country, Medicare will not pay anything -- they pay NOTHING. So many lose all their insurance. If you are a US Military Veteran and live in Manila, the ONLY US Veteran's Administration (VA) medical facility in the World outside the United States is in Manila, so they can get medical care there for free or low cost. That is why I want my VA Medical Card for a backup because I am a Veteran. If you have US Military Tricare Insurance (different types), they will pay some costs for in and out patient medical care in the Philippines if you go to Tricare approved medical doctors and hospitals -- most of which are in Manila (probably 85% of them). Some are in Cebu, but not many. So I have either limited Tricare insurance, or unknown VA Medical insurance, and will probably have to go to Manila to benefit from both. I think Tricare has a $3500 CAP on medical expenses for patients, meaning that Tricare will pay anything over $3,500 for major medical issues. So if you have a $16,000 medical procedure, you don't pay more than $3,500 out of your pocket, "Tricare for Life" will pay the difference. Now these numbers change -- I don't know what the "Tricare for Life" numbers are for 2021. Other types of Tricare Military Medical Insurance may pay more than "Tricare for Life."

U.S. Veterans Affairs (V.A.) has a clinic and hospital for U.S. Armed Forces veterans in the Manilla area. They also have a regional office that handles all other veterans claims and issues.
The example of a 55 year old person doesn’t really answer the cost question for the average retirees in their 60’s and 70’s. It will be substantially more for those above 55. She also did not talk about deductibles and co-payments. It’s a difficult subject because the factors change with age and health. Thank you for the major effort put into this presentation.

Here's a number for you. 19 hours of observation costs 29,000 here in the United States. Insurance didn't cover this because it wasn't an emergency that I was shipped to this hospital on an emergency and shipped to a specialized care facility after. That bit in the middle wasn't covered... Insurance in the United States has more problems than not.

No, sadly, it's not. My experience of top tier healthcare here is not great, I can't imagine what it's like if you can't pay the fees for Manila's "top" doctors.
Depends on what problems you have. I only investigated the dentist world and it's like most in the Philippines disgustingly expensive compared to other ASEAN countries. The terrible influence of America is shown again.

I’ve had great treatment here for Prostate Cancer with great Doctors, and most of the things I’ve had issue with here I’ve been treated better here than my friends in Australia or Canada. My treatments were at The Medical City and they have a lot of first rate equipment.
In my situation as medically retired military I do not have to worry about HealthCare coverage. I'm really interested in knowing how the VA in Manila works, since it's the only place outside of the US where you can actually use veterans benefits. Compared to most out of pocket insurances in the US these plans sound very enticing. Thank you for the research and the heads up.
They will only see you if you are 100% service-connected, but they will only treat your service-connected issues. I’m 100% S/C, but they won’t see me for the care that I really need the way my Chicago VA treated me for everything. They are extremely extremely limited. I have yet to hear someone speak positively of the care offered there. My opinion is that they should not even call themself a VA Clinic. The name is misleading and the service offered is severely limited and very disappointing.
The va in phillipines will only treat medical conditions you aquired while in military. But you can get your drugs from them. If you needed a major surgery and could board a plane, I think the va in japan will do most stuff, check that though....that was 15 years ago.
VA clinic in Manila is only authorized to handel service connected issues. So good for some but not all. On top of that, some of the more specialty issues still need to be handled by FMP (pay up front the get reimbursed most times). The majority of US veterans can NOT use the VA clinic in Manila. We pay 125 euro a month here fully insured for medicines, hospital and dental... So i dont think the $ plan is cheap.. Maybe it's cheap compared to the USA but not to many EU countries. Very informative video though..
I don't know much, but I do know that up until just a couple years ago, every filipina I met was a nurse. Not only that, they were the best nurses. So, in the phillipines, I would assume that at least the care you get from nurses are the best. Also, they are in the top of prettiest nurses as well.
I remember being in a hospital in antipolo with my wife. For a fan for my wife I had to pay up-front so she could be a little cool. And the run down condition of the place shocked me. While I am not here to degrade the Philippines , let me just say ; Culture Shock !
I was in a provincial hospital in Davao City back in 2010. It was old and delapted, they had cats living inside the hospital. It was not a place I viewed as sanitary

However, my sister is an RN in the US and, as she wholeheartedly admits, her Filipino nurse subordinates continue to dazzle her and her other US-trained nurses with their performance. Don't anyone forget that just because they were trained in a 'lesser' country they have any less skills. Our Western paradigm is set up so that we favor those trained in our countries for job positions. Filipino nurses are known around the world for excellence.
Miss Pea, I know from experience that there are many great hospitals in the Philippines. The one thing that has completely stumped me is this. The rate of death from this covid thing is due to the fact that in the Philippines (at least in Olongapo where we live) if you cannot pay in advance for even a life saving surgery you are not getting it and will therefore die. I realize also from experience that getting a Filipino to pay you back is difficult , is not that life more important then the money? why do they make you pay before they take care of you? Unfortunately... providing care to too high a number of people, and then NOT receiving payment... would quickly put a hospital out of business... and then they wouldn't be there to help ANYONE. Hospitals have high costs (salaries to doctors, nurses and other staff, maintenance of medical equipment and even the building itself, etc.), which must be paid regardless of whether or not they "collect" for services rendered. In the u.s., there are laws which force hospitals to treat in life threatening situations... but, I'm pretty sure that the government also "steps in" in some way to prevent that from putting a hospital out of business. I don't know for sure... but, I suspect that Philippines hospitals don't enjoy such protections. This is why I would say that good health care insurance, bolstered by your own emergency savings fund (as much reserve cash as you can afford to keep without spending it on living expenses), should be viewed as an imperative part of your financial planning. The most crucial layer of any plan, is what you can do for yourself.
Many hospitals in America have closed their doors permanently because of too many uninsured or under insured patients. For the same reason, is one of the reasons why medical insurance premiums are skyrocketing out of control. Unlike the Philippines, the US government passed a law in 1964 mandating that even the indigent are entitled to hospital services regardless of anility to pay. Now we are paying the price in gigantic healthcare insurance premiums for those of us lucky enough to have insurance.

Slogans such as “affordable healthcare act” have been anything but affordable. It’s bankrupting the middle class, which is strait out of the socialist playbook.
@@WildMidwest1 Actually, the United States stands virtually alone among developed countries in terms of personal bankruptcies being caused by health emergencies. Call it socialism or whatever you want, but the rest of the world seems to be able to assure that all of their citizens get adequate healthcare through a public or semi-public system.
Great interview, my only question is with pre existing conditions and being over 55, what happens to those that have pre existing conditions that need medications? You can buy the insurance a year in advance before retiring in Pinas. As far as premium for health insurance, it will be expensive specially when you reach 70 & above. The premium is almost comparable to the US & some stop insuring when you reach 65.
A good follow up to this video would be the topic of: Locating/selecting health care providers. Selecting your primary care physician... Choosing a dentist, eye doctor, etc. Always a good idea to have thought about these choices BEFORE an emergency arises so no time is wasted (in the event of...). Just a suggestion Pea... no pressure, lol.
I have a great health plan. If I get really sick then it’s time to cash in my chips. I’m not trying to extend my life in any way. If it’s my time to go I’m leaving. Peace ✌️

Just to clarify something you said Pea, you mentioned some people could take out Philippines Pacific Cross insurance as an alternative to their own country insurance. Note that their policy states: "In the event that you are hospitalized while abroad, our worldwide emergency assistance partner will be there to help you. Pacific Cross includes coverage for a *maximum of 90 days abroad per trip*. Coverage is extended beyond 90 days *provided the reason for going abroad is not to seek medical treatment*. The extension of stay overseas must also be due to an emergency illness or condition (leading to confinement) that arose on or before your 90th day abroad, for which the continued hospitalization will require you to stay abroad beyond 90 days" So its not really an alternative to ones own countries health insurance and one would need to be very careful trying to use it in this fashion. Great idea if we could though.

When I was at Juness Beach Resort in Morong near Subic bay. I did not have to pay for my care because I was a tourist. But the nurse said if I want I can leave money in a jar to others who can not afford care. I left about 700 pesos. Back to everything we came across but one who had lived in Sweden for a couple of years, so we spoke a little Swedish before we moved on.
True..I was in Pasig with a gall bladder attack. Lots of pain, went to ER, but had to sign paperwork that I would pay upon discharge. 4 hrs in ER, lots of Dx testing... final bill $427...as a nurse myself, I was impressed with my care
You need to pay upfront in most hospital them submit a claim in the US. I know someone that was in ICU for 3 weeks & he has to pay the $70K upfront. He submitted a claim when he came back but the insurance company paid him only $65K. He lost $5K.
Hi Pea! This video touches more people than you realize. I have in-laws from China that often come to the U.S. for months at a time (at least before COVID they did) and it was always a worry that they would have some kind of medical issue while they were here. My wife and I (both Seniors) were insured with Pacific Cross. I abandoned it because of my understanding of pre-existing conditions. My wife is still insured, she was admitted 2x in hospital and Pacific Cross was up to his worth. Excellent service. A representative of Pacific Cross even came to the Chong Hua hospital in Cebu to to assist when checking in for an operation. All expenses paid.

Pea, thanks for your work. This is some important stuff. While in the Philippines, I hung around hospitals all the time...not really for me, but because some of my best friends are doctors. I was awaken at the activity that went on in the hospitals. In Bohol there are around a dozen or so hospitals...and they are all very busy. Not only with locals, but expats also....mostly because of renting a motor and crashing it because they didn't learn about Filipino driving skills. Insurance is a high priority...or the expat better have a lot of cash if something happens.

I'd like to know more about healthcare in that how it works when you are sick and injured... like where do you go, who treats you, and how the system works. Not healthcare insurance, just the system... In my small experience, it is far below what we expect in the west (especially when you are in the provinces). I don't have any experience in the bigger cities. My wife hurt herself when we lived in Malaybalay, Mindanao, and we had to go to the hospital. They don't really do triage, taking the worst patients first. They just send you to a location in the hospital depending on your health issue. I also feel like the doctor was just going through the motions, not giving individual service (meaning every problem has similarities but can be different between individual patients...). So, it's like an assembly line... you get in line, you tell the doctor your problem, and they give you a generic diagnosis without asking questions or getting specific information, and that's it. I'm sure they are wrong very often because there is no attention to detail. Get people in and out seems to be the goal. It is one of the main reasons we live in the USA and not Philippines.

I don't know about Doctors and nurses who practice in the Philippines, however if they are similar to The Filipino medical professionals I have met and worked with here in the US I have no concerns about those professionals in the Philippines.
Depends on what hospital you go to. I've had good nurses and I've had experiences with nurses that are always on their phones.
I have been going to the Philippines for over 25 years and my observation is that if you go to a reliable Hospital, you will receive excellent care. The doctors and nurses are both very knowledgeable and caring.

My wife found me unconscious by the beach in Masbate Province. No ambulance was available. It took her 2 hours to find someone who could drive me to the Doctors Hospital in Masbate City - 45 minutes away. My private hospital room was almost as good as a small town hospital room in the us, and the care I received was outstanding. Four days in the hospital came to about $990 US. I had PhilHealth, and that brought it down to about $668.
You're lucky, if you're having a stroke or heart attack, you'll be either be in a vegetative condition or dead by the time you arrive at the hospital.
I've gone to the dentist in Manila, and he did a good job for 6 times less expensive than in my country. But honestly, i would be king of reluctant to have any surgery in the philippines except in case of emergency... While I watched the documentary about Dr. Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital, i was so shocked that I cried. And i really rarely cry... I hope other hospitals are better than this one...

I might come just for that, and I only need a filling! But actually its between 2 teeth and in the US they're telling me I need 2 root canals and crowns for $1000 each tooth (which seems to be the favorite price here), and it doesn't even bother me, just want filling between them.
My cousin from Australia had an emergency detached retina surgery at St. Luke in Manila & they screw it. Australian doctors said it's irrepairable. He lost his peripheral vision & St. Luke is supposed to be world class.😂

I work in healthcare and I assure you the problem is not that people don’t care. The problems are extreme levels of bureaucracy and layers of socialism. Healthcare workers feel helpless in a crazy system that grows crazier every year, with ever more unrealistic expectations and largely unfunded mandates. Nothing drives up the cost of healthcare like politicians and others making promises they cannot possibly keep.
PI healthcare, by contrast, appears to be much more capitalistic as it was in the US 50-70 years ago. I hope PI can find a way to modernize care delivery without adopting everything that went wrong in the west. Not sure if that is possible though.

Great information and answered many of my personal questions about insurance in the PI. Thorough and well done, Miss Pea. Thank you.
Have been using Pacific Cross cover for many years, luckily never had a claim, so don’t know if they come thru when needed.
The one thing I have observed with Philippine Doctors, Surgeons and Specialists is that their medical training and certification is lightweight by International standards. Also perhaps because they are overworked, visiting a few clinics weekly, they tend to rush their diagnosis with minimal testing and default towards operations rather than as a last resort.
So, if you do have a serious problem, recommend getting more detailed tests (like colored ct scans) and sending that data overseas for a second opinion.

Have been living in the Philippines for 20 years and love it. But the "fact" that Philippine trained doctors have to go thru retraining and certification in UK/USD/Canada/Australia, is more than an opinion Many Doctors end up working as Nurses. Many Nurses end up as medical assistants in retirement homes in those countries until retrained.
Many of the best Doctors here in the Philippines, ended up working overseas for many years getting retrained, before returning home.
We all know that the Philippine education system is not well funded, forced to take shortcuts to put people to work and we do our best to fill in the Gaps. That's why I advise a second opinion from overseas, if you have a serious concern

I traveled from Cebu city to Tagbilaran, Bohol on the hydrofoil and it was amazing!! Saw the creepy big snake, the cave pool, and painted church. Alano white sands is where I spent my honeymoon with my amazing Filipina wife. A truly magical week in the most picturesque place I'd ever been with the nicest people I'd ever met!!
I checked prices and found Pacific Cross was indeed cheaper than Cigna and Aetna for the same coverage, paid yearly.
In addition I like the fact that Pac Cross renews regardless of age, and also covers travel worldwide. You can choose to reduce your premium by excluding more expensive countries. And they offer travel insurance and rental car insurance.

Thank you -- extremely informative video on Health Plans for the Philippines and the World. I took notes. The issue with Americans who are age 65 or over, most are covered under Government Medicare Part A (Hospitalization) and Part B (Outpatient Doctor Care) Insurance. Medicare Insurance only pays 80% of costs. Then most buy a Medicare Supplement (Gap Insurance) for the other 20%, and both together, theoretically, will pay 100% of all medical costs. I had 3 major eye surgeries, and paid a total of less than $100.00. Part D is medicines, and that is extra you have to buy a pharmacy plan for pills, etc. HOWEVER, When you move Out of the Country, Medicare will not pay anything -- they pay NOTHING. So many lose all their insurance. If you are a US Military Veteran and live in Manila, the ONLY US Veteran's Administration (VA) medical facility in the World outside the United States is in Manila, so they can get medical care there for free or low cost. That is why I want my VA Medical Card for a backup because I am a Veteran. If you have US Military Tricare Insurance (different types), they will pay some costs for in and out patient medical care in the Philippines if you go to Tricare approved medical doctors and hospitals -- most of which are in Manila (probably 85% of them). Some are in Cebu, but not many. So I have either limited Tricare insurance, or unknown VA Medical insurance, and will probably have to go to Manila to benefit from both. I think Tricare has a $3500 CAP on medical expenses for patients, meaning that Tricare will pay anything over $3,500 for major medical issues. So if you have a $16,000 medical procedure, you don't pay more than $3,500 out of your pocket, "Tricare for Life" will pay the difference. Now these numbers change -- I don't know what the "Tricare for Life" numbers are for 2021. Other types of Tricare Military Medical Insurance may pay more than "Tricare for Life."
Correction: You don’t lose your Medicare part A or B (extra pay) outside the country. You are a plane ticket to (Guam or U.S )away from medical care.

U.S. Veterans Affairs (V.A.) has a clinic and hospital for U.S. Armed Forces veterans in the Manilla area. They also have a regional office that handles all other veterans claims and issues.
The example of a 55 year old person doesn’t really answer the cost question for the average retirees in their 60’s and 70’s. It will be substantially more for those above 55. She also did not talk about deductibles and co-payments. It’s a difficult subject because the factors change with age and health. Thank you for the major effort put into this presentation.

Here's a number for you. 19 hours of observation costs 29,000 here in the United States. Insurance didn't cover this because it wasn't an emergency that I was shipped to this hospital on an emergency and shipped to a specialized care facility after. That bit in the middle wasn't covered...

No, sadly, it's not. My experience of top tier healthcare here is not great, I can't imagine what it's like if you can't pay the fees for Manila's "top" doctors.

I’ve had great treatment here for Prostate Cancer with great Doctors, and most of the things I’ve had issue with here I’ve been treated better here than my friends in Australia or Canada. My treatments were at The Medical City and they have a lot of first rate equipment.

In my situation as medically retired military I do not have to worry about HealthCare coverage. I'm really interested in knowing how the VA in Manila works, since it's the only place outside of the US where you can actually use veterans benefits. Compared to most out of pocket insurances in the US these plans sound very enticing. Thank you for the research and the heads up.
They will only see you if you are 100% service-connected, but they will only treat your service-connected issues. I’m 100% S/C, but they won’t see me for the care that I really need the way my Chicago VA treated me for everything. They are extremely extremely limited. I have yet to hear someone speak positively of the care offered there. My opinion is that they should not even call themself a VA Clinic. The name is misleading and the service offered is severely limited and very disappointing.
The va in phillipines will only treat medical conditions you aquired while in military. But you can get your drugs from them. If you needed a major surgery and could board a plane, I think the va in japan will do most stuff, check that though....that was 15 years ago.
VA clinic in Manila is only authorized to handel service connected issues. So good for some but not all. On top of that, some of the more specialty issues still need to be handled by FMP (pay up front the get reimbursed most times). The majority of US veterans can NOT use the VA clinic in Manila. If you want more info, check out tricare in the Philippines on fb groups. Imho, ymmv

We pay 125 euro a month here fully insured for medicines, hospital and dental... So i dont think the $ plan is cheap.. Maybe it's cheap compared to the USA but not to many EU countries. Very informative video though..

I don't know much, but I do know that up until just a couple years ago, every filipina I met was a nurse. Not only that, they were the best nurses. So, in the phillipines, I would assume that at least the care you get from nurses are the best.

I remember being in a hospital in antipolo with my wife. For a fan for my wife I had to pay up-front so she could be a little cool. And the run down condition of the place shocked me. While I am not here to degrade the Philippines , let me just say ; Culture Shock !

However, my sister is an RN in the US and, as she wholeheartedly admits, her Filipino nurse subordinates continue to dazzle her and her other US-trained nurses with their performance. Don't anyone forget that just because they were trained in a 'lesser' country they have any less skills. Our Western paradigm is set up so that we favor those trained in our countries for job positions. Filipino nurses are known around the world for excellence.

Miss Pea, I know from experience that there are many great hospitals in the Philippines. The one thing that has completely stumped me is this. The rate of death from this covid thing is due to the fact that in the Philippines (at least in Olongapo where we live) if you cannot pay in advance for even a life saving surgery you are not getting it and will therefore die. I realize also from experience that getting a Filipino to pay you back is difficult , is not that life more important then the money? why do they make you pay before they take care of you? They make you pay up front so they are sure they get their money.
Unfortunately... providing care to too high a number of people, and then NOT receiving payment... would quickly put a hospital out of business... and then they wouldn't be there to help ANYONE.
Hospitals have high costs (salaries to doctors, nurses and other staff, maintenance of medical equipment and even the building itself, etc.), which must be paid regardless of whether or not they "collect" for services rendered.
In the u.s., there are laws which force hospitals to treat in life threatening situations... but, I'm pretty sure that the government also "steps in" in some way to prevent that from putting a hospital out of business.
I don't know for sure... but, I suspect that Philippines hospitals don't enjoy such protections.
This is why I would say that good health care insurance, bolstered by your own emergency savings fund (as much reserve cash as you can afford to keep without spending it on living expenses), should be viewed as an imperative part of your financial planning.
The most crucial layer of any plan, is what you can do for yourself.
Many hospitals in America have closed their doors permanently because of too many uninsured or under insured patients. For the same reason, is one of the reasons why medical insurance premiums are skyrocketing out of control. Unlike the Philippines, the US government passed a law in 1964 mandating that even the indigent are entitled to hospital services regardless of anility to pay. Now we are paying the price in gigantic healthcare insurance premiums for those of us lucky enough to have insurance.

Slogans such as “affordable healthcare act” have been anything but affordable. It’s bankrupting the middle class, which is strait out of the socialist playbook.

You can buy the insurance a year in advance before retiring in Pinas. As far as premium for health insurance, it will be expensive specially when you reach 70 & above. The premium is almost comparable to the US & some stop insuring when you reach 65.

Selecting your primary care physician...
Choosing a dentist, eye doctor, etc.
Always a good idea to have thought about these choices BEFORE an emergency arises so no time is wasted (in the event of...).

Just to clarify something you said Pea, you mentioned some people could take out Philippines Pacific Cross insurance as an alternative to their own country insurance. Note that their policy states: "In the event that you are hospitalized while abroad, our worldwide emergency assistance partner will be there to help you. Pacific Cross includes coverage for a *maximum of 90 days abroad per trip*. Coverage is extended beyond 90 days *provided the reason for going abroad is not to seek medical treatment*. The extension of stay overseas must also be due to an emergency illness or condition (leading to confinement) that arose on or before your 90th day abroad, for which the continued hospitalization will require you to stay abroad beyond 90 days" So its not really an alternative to ones own countries health insurance and one would need to be very careful trying to use it in this fashion. Great idea if we could though.
I don't think the agent said it's a replacement of your home country plan. The message is it's a good supplement plan.

So what happens if the hospital is not part of the Pacific Cross network? Does the patient pay for the entire bill out of their own pocket?

Ear update.While it started and ended poorly the actual interview was great,and u great to look at.I presume the beginning and end was shot another time so let you off slighty on that.So i give you a 7/10 which is just about a pass.I am sure you would like a higher score? Also do you know how many passes and fails you got? As I would like to keep score.

True..I was in Pasig with a gall bladder attack. Lots of pain, went to ER, but had to sign paperwork that I would pay upon discharge. 4 hrs in ER, lots of Dx testing... final bill $427...as a nurse myself, I was impressed with my care
You need to pay upfront in most hospital them submit a claim in the US. I know someone that was in ICU for 3 weeks & he has to pay the $70K upfront. He submitted a claim when he came back but the insurance company paid him only $65K. He lost $5K.

I have free Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO Global, and it covers everything there, but I have to pay first and be reimbursed later :(
I also had the same plan. Good luck when you need to see a specialist is all I have to say. That plan is very much an all or nothing situation.

Hi Pea! This video touches more people than you realize. I have in-laws from China that often come to the U.S. for months at a time (at least before COVID they did) and it was always a worry that they would have some kind of medical issue while they were here. I'm going to look into this as an option for them. Thank you!
