When ruler Ahmed Shah shifted his capital to Ahmedabad in 1411, small villages were eventually hemmed in by construction of a wall. In its prime, there were 12 gates connecting to the core. Within these 10 square kilometers, the city was divided into different districts with clusters of houses called "pols."
The "pols" are unique to Ahmedabad. Each "pol" is accessed independently through a single gate and usually inhabited by people of the same community and caste.
Each "pol" also had guard's quarters above the portal guarding the only access to the "pols" main street. Fascinating!
@sco6484 You are so right! Even eggs are considered vegetarian to strict vegetarians which I never knew! We resorted to grilled cheese sandwiches for breakfast. Best regards, Travels With Sheila
Hi Sheila, Thanks for uploading this video. I will appreciate if you share some more videos of these streets.
Wish I had more! So very interesting and thanks for commenting and visiting my channel.
What an amazing and extraordinary place!!!! How beautiful! I am impressed with it, to say the least!
Thanks for taking time to watch this old video, Daniel. I was struck by the similarities and wonder how people, so far apart in distance came up with the same idea? Or perhaps, it was always a matter of escaping??
@@SheilaSimkin Maybe a similar reaction to a similar life.
@@danielintheantipodes6741 🤔
@@SheilaSimkin I mean, the landscapes they were faced with were similar so they came up with similar ideas on how to build.
@@danielintheantipodes6741 Interesting thought! 🤔 My thinking was “escape and evasion” 😂
Love indian life.
Me too. Don't know if you had a chance to view my Lyon, France videos but we took a tour that is so similar to the pols. Secret entrances that lead from one area to another. Fascinating. Thanks so much for your time to view and comment. Best regards, Sheila 😍
Hi Sheila!
Can you please take a video of Dhanasuthar Pole (go on left side at Ambaji mata Mandir) and post it on CZcams?
Thank you,
I wish I could, Gautam, but I'm not here. This was filmed several years ago on my trip through Gujarat. Best to you and thanks so much for taking time to watch and comment. Regards, Sheila
Did you encounter problem in locating non-vegetarian restaurants through out Gujrat easily? I am sure your answer is Yes! ^_^
If you go without nonveg, you are not going to suffer like the animals. On the contrary you might be better off, not knowing the hygiene of the meat, poultry or fish.
