  • From www.swimmingpoolsteve.com/pag... - How do you know if your swimming pool pump is working properly? The first thing to do is to look and listen to your pool pump. Does it look or sound unusual? You should know roughly how your pump sounds and what it looks like when it is running so you can tell if there is anything off.
When looking through the pump lid you should see it full of water and little to no air bubbles. There should be only water visible. If you listen to the pump when it is running, does it sound good or is there any odd noises? If a pump is starved for water it could be making gurgling noises or even sound like there are rocks tumbling around inside. Double check the water level in your pool to make sure that the level is high enough to be reaching the skimmer and or other suction ports. Check the weir door on the skimmer the make sure it is not stuck shut which does not allow enough water into the suction line to keep the pump running properly.
Check the pool filter gauge to see what the current pressure is. If it is not at a normal pressure level, this could be a symptom of the pool pump not running properly. The first thing is turn off the system and check all of the pool valves to ensure they are in the ON position. If there are any valves in the OFF position, turn it back to ON so the pool pump will get the water it needs to run properly.

I wish I had seen this video about three years ago. True story. I had a problem with my pump losing it's prime. Drove me nuts... rebuilt my plumbing going into my pump 3 times because I thought it must be sucking air through a leak in one of the joints. This is my first pool so forgive me if I didn't know better. After losing a lot of sleep, one day I had an epiphany and decided to check my skimmer while trying to get my pump running again. Presto!!! My recently replaced skimmer gate was sticking due to the edges not being cleaned properly during the manufacturing process . Luckily I didn't have to replace a burnt out pump. Love your videos Steve , just wish you had put this one out sooner...🤣

My variable speed pump doesn’t run with a full chamber or water when running at 1200 RPMs. Is this normal?

      Same

Most pool pumps will not run with a full chamber of water at 1200 RPM. As long as the pump is un fact moving water it is not a problem. If the pump is not moving water that is definitely a problem.

I’m having problems with possible cavitation. I slightly closed my return valve and the nose went away. Will this hurt anything?

Not enough info to say definitively. But worth noting is that pool pumps require back pressure or they will cavitate. By throttling the valve you are indeed provided an increase in back pressure and could be this alone helps the pump, or the reduced flow rate helps the pump. Many pool pumps are WELL oversized for the pipes that they run on. So perhaps yours is too powerful and the reduction in flow helps it. Again, these are just generic possibilities. Every pool system is unique.

@@Swimmingpoolsteve thank you for your reply.
Also my pressure went from 12psi to 14 psi
Clean running pressure. Will the increase hurt anything?

@@Derek.Naquin an increase from 12psi to 14 psi will not substantially change anything.
