  • I just wanted to show how easy to build a homebrew air variable and high voltage butterfly capacitor.
I designed and used 3D printed endplates. They are free and can be downloaded from www.thingivers...

Instead of using air dielectric, have you thought about just printing that as part of the fixture?
I was just looking into doing this. PLA has a dielectric constant of 3 to air of 1; PLA dielectric breakdown is 30kV/mm to 3kV/mm for air. This should increase power handling and decrease capacitor size for the same capacitance range.

Interesting idea. Can you please explain that a bit more. Where can we place printed PLA plastics parts? Between the stators? You can email me at erhan@ta1lsx.com

@@TA2WK-TR I was thinking of printing the stator and rotor vanes directly and at the desired thickness (100% infill of course). Copper tape the plastic. The overall configuration probably wouldn't be rotating butterfly though.
However, since you've already laser cut both, perhaps print just inserts into the air gap.

It depends on number of plate sets. Email me I can send you pf table erhan@ta1lsx.com

what is the plate thickness and what metal please?

Its 1mm. I have 5mm and 6mm spacers. So they give us 2mm and 2.5mm spacing.

Yes, you can order from www.ebay.com/str/TA1LSXStore or email me how many plates you need? erhan@ta2wk.com

Long term durability is questionable. The plate and shafts should be silver plated and brazed together to prevent corrosion from forming. Corrosion will cause higher plate to plate resistance.

Nope. I use 304 grade stainless steel plates and rods and high grade aluminum plates. I have a few caps for my own use for more than 2 years and nothing happened yet.
