Do you want to change location so that you can install your personally owns ROMs without prying eyes? Then you'll need a VPN installed on the steam deck, which is not all that easy to do... In this guide, I'll use ExpressVPN to help you easily do just that!

that was incredibly helpful, thanks! just a tip for other users - when you type in your password on linux konsole, you won't actually be able to see anything by the cursor so it will seem as if nothing is being typed. i suppose this is a security buffer but be rest assured and press enter after you've put in your password and it'll be recognised.

FYI: You can turn readonly mode back on once done, the VPN will still work normally.

I just got this up and working thanks to you. This was super helpful. One note, I got stuck on one part simply because I wasn't being case sensitive.
To everyone: Make super all upper and lower case letters are exactly as you see things in the video and you should be fine if you followed along correctly.

Thank you. The solution works before any Steam updates, but then there is an issue after a steam update which wipes out expressVPN. When I try to reinstall, I get an error in the Konsole that says that expressvpn already exists in folder path x. Basically steam wiped out some of the files, but some files still exist. How do I get around this so I can reinstall after an update? EDIT: For every one else getting this error, you need to delete the files in the /etc directory that are mentioned in the error, then run the installation in the video again.
Where can i find the /etc directory? I am having trouble locating it.
I can't turn on my expressvpn because it keeps on saying command not found but I've had expressvpn on for little over a month and it just turned off with this recent update

error: not enough free disk space
error: failed to commit transaction (not enough free disk space)
Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.

I followed your steps and I was able to get the VPN installed. Unfortunately, I think something in the process broke my steam deck on game mode. I get “Error loading” cannot read property etc. any suggestions on how to fix this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Anyone know how to get around the ‘limited connectivity’ while using ExpressVPN on deck?
Edit. After going though the steps after hitting Y for installation it tells me there are conflicting files how do I delete the old files to redownload them? Or what do I need to do? I updated the deck and when I went to check the VPN the command’s stopped being recognized so I figured I needed to redownload it but now I don’t know 😅

When I type organization in the pacman command, I get an error " no operation specified (use -h for help)
When u disable sudo steamos-readonly to put a pvn on can I enable sudo again after. Cause I don't want anything to happen to the steam deck
Is the VPN still active when you go back to game mode (and toggle between desktop and game mode)... but game mode specifically?

I am unable to type in my activation code while in Konsole. I can just hit enter and the activation fails. When I type the code, the cursor remains blank.
Edit: To anyone with this issue, hold CTRL and click the mouse wheel. It will paste the contents of the clipboard into Konsole.
Has anyone gotten the Linux package for NordVPN to install? Whenever I try this message I get an error saying that the file is corrupted.

I’m having trouble finding the file after the command Cd and Ls the apps, documents, downloads show up but when I enter Cd downloads it says no such file or directory. What did I do wrong?
Edit. Okay I don’t know what I was doing wrong but I was doing something wrong because I got it. Followed the rest of the steps and I’m all set! This is the second time using the Konsole. Just took walking away and coming back.

Starting openvpn with nmcli gives me an error saying I'm missing GLIBC_2.3.4 but I have 2.3.5. Am I just doing something wrong?

Thanks for the mini tutorial. I have a question, what is the difference between -U and -S ?
In very simple terms, -S is pretty much an install. -U is an "update." What it's doing is checking if there's already files there then adding the remaining ones. He's using -U so he doesn't accidentally overwrite any SteamOS files.
How do you update it when it needs the update ? Do you just go through the same process?
Is there a way you can pin Expressvpn to the taskbar?
I have installed this for 3 months and suddenly not working anymore, idk what the reason was, but i tried to install again, follow the steps and expreevpn commands isn't working error.. so i'm guessing I need to uninstall the apps and reinstall again but i dont know how

I’m having this problem after the recent update. I had auto connect on and after the update Expressvpn wasn’t connected anymore. I went back through konsol to try to reconnect it and now I’m getting “conflicting files” feedback.
@@TylerByrd1989 ok so when you try to update/download the VPN and it tells you there was a file or files that the error was occurring at you need to type into the Konsole "sudo pacman -Qo (name of the file)" that command will see if there is any owner of the files and when it says there is no owner you then type "sudo rm (name of the file) this command will delete the file you typed in, after that try to redownload/update the VPN. If you have more than 1 file that there is an error coming from then you will have to do the 2 steps above another time, 1 time for each file. If you have any questions or is confused then just lmk and ill help you.
@@Relyinglemming6 this works but you forgot to mention it's "sudo rm (path to file)" not name of the file.. for example to remove expressvpn (when you get conflicting files error message) run this
"sudo rm /etc/default/expressvpn" and
"sudo rm /etc/init.d/expressvpn"
in my case i hade to remove expressvpn from 2 folders

I researched and downloaded a udp file from expressvpn and then added it to my wifi settings under VPN(openvpn) and now it shows up in my networks list when i want the vpn on for the country i chose i connect to it as well has connecting to my wifi.
I got to the sudo pacman -U etc command and pressed enter and it prompted me to enter the password but I can't type anything. Any clue as to why?
If the password is showing blank when you're typing, that's because it's working as intended. The video covers this earlier I think, but your prompts are still being typed in, it's just not showing it. Hope that helps.
I have a password created. After I type passwd and try to put in password it does not let me type anything. Do you know why that is?🤔

is there any way i could a gui version like the windows one i tried the commands to get the browser extensions but they don't work and when i ad the extensions using a web browser it says i don't have express vpn installed
I have spent days trying to get my Nord to work via openvpn and failing miserably. You should really contact express to see about getting an affiliate link.
