- Should you lean in or lean away when doing dumbbell lateral raises? In this short, I'll explore three different lateral raise techniques and explain why leaning in during dumbbell lateral raises might be the most effective approach for side delt growth!

Bro just removed all 3,000,000 tutorials saying leaning out was the best😭
but that was with cable wasn't it?
@@Yajoy-kh3kcI’ve seen them say it with dumbbells
new research = new conclusion
with the now more abundance of research saying the stretch part of the movement is the most important for muscle growth, that even doing just the stretch part can sometimes be better, it make sense to modify the exercise to have more tension in the stretch part
@@minegamerpro1308we’ve known for decades that stretch is good, but it wasn’t as popular as it is now
Leaning in is better with dumbbells for the reasons he just showed, leaning out is better for cable because it evens the resistance across the range of the rep

True. I still feel like the other leaning variation is better cause it hits more of the delt at 90 degrees. He's right in that you can't really cheat his way.

Good stuff as usual. Lean in when doing dumbbells and lean out when using the cables. Gold nuggets for free!
Thank you for your practical logic, It all makes sense to me now! 🎉🎉
No. You do not lean out when using cables. You lean in toward the weight stack. Read Doug Brignole's book. This is where Jeff is getting the info.
WRONG. You do the same thing. Lean in with both.
@@MrRossT1 You don't have to lean with cables because there's always constant tension.
@@codybulluss1987 correct
I’ve never commenter on Yourube in my life…. Leaning in lateral raise was magic. Thank you sir
He's not Lying
Don’t comment again
You lost your streak
Learnt this from Joe aesthetics a couple months before his passing last year, his variation was with a bench lying on your side with an angle of 65 degrees on the bench then do it as a single arm exercise alternating between both arms. Usually do these before normal lat raises as they are slightly harder. Joe was truly a genius. RIP 🕊️
If you use cable you can do the “lean away” and still get the tension. 😊
With cables you don't need to lean at all. The cable positioning is important. Adjusting to have the pulley right where your hand naturally rests at your side is the best for tension in the stretched position.

I love this. You’ve taken a closer look at a common exercise and have improved it.
Honestly, Ive given up on DB lat raises altogether after moving to your recommendation of cables at hand height. Its so much more effective and less fatiguing.
Well, not everybody has access to cables. But if you do, yeah that's superior
Yh I’ve learned some invaluable tips from Jeff. The hand height cable raises and using the using the rear delt machine but with one facing the side, both have had incredible effects on growth

Are people criticizing him ? Really all the progress I have with my upper body is thanks to his sciences basic tips and very well explained videos. I'm 60 years old , soooooo.
The only criticism here is that it's literally only 1/2 an inch on the eccentric that it's changing from a normal lateral raise.
@@peterman8848and you're wasting time cause you can't do both simultaneously. I think I'll just stay with the usual standing one
He's good but he also says there's nothing wrong with the standard standing variation. Also among any serious lifters it's already known there's no tension at the bottom, not just for this but for any similar lift. There's even one school of thought that eliminates out the lower tension portions of lifts entirely, practically making them all holds instead of lifts.
I like Jeff's videos, he's a great resource. Good luck on your fitness journey. You can't go wrong looking at his videos but also other sources too and finding what works best for you personally.
OK you wanna know and I'll tell you why Jeff's tips are not ideal, he classify himself as a science based content creator, but this tips are almost always draw from experience, and more his personal experience, take this lateral raise as example, that little angle on the bottom DOES NOT MATTER AT ALL, because at that angle your side delts simply doesn't work to support the weight on your arm, yes you and create some tension leaning sideways, but why? That's just some old time pump chasing, which does not add any mechanical tension only adding a tiny bit more metabolic stress, for normal people that will not give you gains, unless you are enhanced, but then Jeff is not enhanced he is natural.
You got results because you worked hard, this is what working out like, even if you do it the "wrong" way you will still get better, does not mean tips you followed did wonder, you did wonders to yourself.
And if you really value science bases tips, go see RP, a far better arsenal of knowledge.
@therocklau I strongly believe tgat working hard it's absolutely necessary to get good results, however a proper form and good technique are the key . How you can do it wrong and get the results you want , when may you will be working in different muscles.
The "menno henselmans " lateral raise! The Menno!

Ever since I started incorporating the DB Super ROM Lateral Raise that is shown by Dr. Mike from RP I haven't gone back to any other DB Lateral Variation. It's very challenging and I've seen better growth and carry over compared to the traditional ROM Lateral Raise. So for me, the Super ROM variation is best 💪
You mean bilateral with max ROM high to the sky? Love it. Also great traps exercise.
Personally never enjoyed it. I call them lu raises. But i have to reduce the load quite a bit in order to do the top part. Which isn’t much side delts anyway. And then after I can still crank about a few more reps but can’t get it to the top and now have burning traps with little Delt burn. Felt like a waste of time and energy.
However I did start going slightly above parallel which has helped drastically
I didn’t understand a single thing you said

One more tip to get more stretch, you don't have to stop at your torso on the bottom. You can pass the dumbbell in front of you at the bottom (lean forward a bit if necessary) to get even more stretch with tension.
I love to listen to this little guy he knows so much about muscle and nutrition 💪🏾
This little guy lmaoo
Low-key a helluva work out tip.
Leveraging the strength curve. My man
But would you opt for the lean-in lateral raise over a cable lateral raise?
Lean-in is just the dumbbell equivalent of standing cable lateral raise, if you place the cable position correctly
lean in on the cable lateral raise too
Guess it depends on how you have your cable positioned
Cables are vastly superior and no one can change my mind.
