Where Do Our Thoughts Come From?

  • In this video a woman questions Rupert about the origin of thoughts and the concept of freedom. Rupert suggests that thoughts arise in the self and that the self must be inherently free of thoughts. Additionally, he mentions how the experience of love and freedom are not individual experiences, but rather belong to a larger space of infinite consciousness. The discussion also touches on the nature of precepts in Buddhism and how they are inherent actions that come from oneself.

Nisargadatta Maharaj said we are not even the thinkers of our thoughts. If we were, we would know what our next thought would be!! In other words we don't think our thoughts, they come to us!!
    Here is a clue.
Tell the mind, "ok let me have some thought now!". The mind will go blank for a moment.
Similarly if we tell someone "keep your mind free of thought and especially don't think of a monkey"
What does the mind do? It will give us a monkey thought. So it's like there is a flow of a thought vibration coming to us so long we are identified with the body mind world. As the thoughts are of the body mind world only.

You are pure consciousness. For example think of an onion, one needs to peel the various layers, first layer is of the thoughts arising in your mind, second layer is of all the emotions you feel because of your thoughts, third layer is the sensations you feel in your body. Shine the light of awareness on who is this "I" who is receiving these thoughts? Then you will realise the real "I" is free of thoughts, emotions, etc. THE REAL I is the absolute truth. You are not your mind, your body, your emotions etc. You are just THAT. You are pure awareness. Use you mind only as a tool when required for work etc. THE other times just keep your tool box aka mind stored away. Be present in this moment
Also whenever someone has used their thoughts too much it's negative. Purity, love, joy, creativity arises from beyond the mind
We only have two choices to make- either to choose our mind, or to choose the so called pure awareness which we all have. The mind is a liar, it lies a lot. You don't have to buy that lie and analyse it . Let the lies go. The mind is good when it's required for tasks, otherwise it's not required. The thoughts are generated because you are tuning into a particular vibration just like you use a radio to tune into a FM station. Tune into only what you want.

Image and sound waves in our TV do not originate IN IT. The same might happen with thoughts. I don't know, but it is a possibility. I do not KNOW for sure that thoughts arise in me. If our gist and very essence is Consciousness then perhaps thoughts can arise within AND without. ALSO: what I am may not be LIMITED to my physical body. For example, our Aura is an extension of the body. Emotions are vibes that can travel (telepathy). Maybe we should not be so quick to reach conclusions about these very elusive phenomena.

Ahhh, such a better video than Eckhart Tolles video of the same name.
Eckhart goes off on some weird tangent about collective mind and energy fields and yadda yadda yadda. Unverifiable hoopla.
At least Rupert goes in the practical direction of liberation without trying to sound pompous and New Agey.
That is, of course, until later when he talks about channeling consciousness and is probably then making a concession to the woman's point of view. He wouldn't want to imply that we could go shoot people now after realization. Not that we would necessarily want to.
Strange how we concede absolute freedom and then tell people how to use it. The organism continues to be an apparently genetically and environmentally conditioned organism after enlightenment. Viewed alternatively, all of our behaviors arise spontaneously out of "no-thing" anyway and it is realized there is no separation between subject and object and no doer and controller.
There is no telling what sort of behavior enlightenment will produce in any given organism. Or any sort of behavior before or after realization for that matter. But this generates fear of lack of control in an ordinary person and fear is not an expedient means to enlightenment lol.
The most we can say is that many of the most egotistical and neurotic behaviors tend to be attenuated in most of the individuals that realize no separation and lack of doership. But theoretically that doesn't disqualify any particular behaviors from spontaneously erupting from the individual that we would maybe consider "immoral" or "unsavory."
Further, morality itself is an attempt by the apparently separate individual to control his own future behavior and/or control the future behavior of society which is impossible and why it often creates the very neurotic behavior it attempts to monitor.
The great irony has always been that the person who realizes there has never been a doer often manifests more significantly moral behavior because he can accept that circumstances are outside of his control and only reacts spontaneously as the situation demands without neurosis. Otherwise he tends to be content.. And this contentedness is where our often kind, compassionate and generous behaviors often tend to manifest from.
But if you want an example of someone who realized no-doership and no separation but whose tendencies were more critical and even temperamental, check out UG Krishnamurti.
Compassion, kindness, etc. Arise in individuals who already have a sympathetic/empathetic nature before and after realization. Realizing the Absolute may or may not affect the Relative in any fashion.
After all, Consciousness as the Absolute IS already complete in itself regardless of the manifestation. The "evil", or "immoral" are just as much a play of consciousness as the "good" or "moral".
    Thank you for your time.

Enlightenment probably most often happens to people who are already compassionate and evolved. As you say, fear isn’t a great conductor to enlightenment and with fear often comes insecurity, greed, power, excessive desire, all things that take the mind away from an empty state, which is needed for enlightenment (from what I’ve studied).

That was only part of what Augustine said. Leaving it there makes it sound more like Aleister Crowley.
“Love and do what you want” Augustine wrote in his Homilies on the First Epistle of John, but he also describes sin as misdirected or disordered love, and humanity as characterized by sin. The long explanation of how he differentiates between that which we ought to 'use', and that which we ought to 'enjoy' is very complex, but worth researching for anyone interested.

Odd that he thinks we have free will. We do not choose the thoughts that enter our mind because that would require that thoughts come from thought. They do not. Now, when a thought arrives, we choose whether to dwell on that thought or not, however, that choice also comes from a thought that we did not bring about ourselves. All thoughts are served to us, even when we want to train our minds, that in itself is also a thought that we are not responsible for.

At about 8:30 min things become very confusing. Up until that point, it was very clearly established that thoughts arise from some unknown place and that we don't create them. Because of that, we are not capable of making choices ourselves because choices are made with thinking processes and we are not producing those thoughts that are involved in the choice. At about 8:30 min, Rupert says that it is our job to "channel" our thoughts so as to aim our life in the right direction or something to that effect. While, "channel" is another word for "choose" isn't it?? To me, there seems to be a lack of clarity at that point. It seems like Rupert is saying the exact opposite of what the first part of the video established. Your thoughts??

Many times I perceive or experience thoughts coming "from somewhere else", coming "into me" or "through me" and are not "mine" or "of me". Thoughts have no dimensions of space or time, no charge, no mass, are immaterial, invisible and can come at any time and from anywhere. I believe the "force carrier" of thoughts, as photons are the force carrier of light or the graviton is the force carrier of gravity, is or are neutrinos. Constantly flowing into and through everything in the universe as mere, infinite potential.

However, this is what I learned so far: they are mainly composed electrons and a few elements depending on the region and function at the time of occurence. The master switch or what you believe you command at when you think is directly associated with emotions so even though it feels like your in control and having free will, it is in fact a type of response to a stimulus, but the chain reaction and mechanism is so complex that we all feel as if we made the decision freely. Why are we all like this? Most probably a surviving mechanism to cope with stress and in this guys's case for the sake of his sanity.

I am beginning to feel as if thoughts are not in our brains, head, or up here (pointing at my forehead). I am beginning to truly feel, within my heart, that thoughts are universal, from the outside... as if we are narrating our lives. Is there actual proof that thoughts really come from within our brain, head, skull, or even any part of our body? Like does imagination or dialoguing thoughts have anything to do with the Human anatomy or body?
I feel the same way with imagination. When we visualize something; does this come from our mind, as well? or everything we imagine or say in our quote on quote "head" is just here already in this physical-realm?

Why does a thought have to originate from within? Why couldn't our consciousness be like a radio, receiving thoughts that are somehow being transmitted to us, that we then process and make a decision on how to process . In my experience, many thoughts, particularly both bad thoughts and very inspirational thoughts, seem to come "to" me, not "from" me. We are dealing with an unknown, and while Rubert may have a very qualified opinion on the subject, it's still just an opinion, not a fact.

    • @alwaysbeeurself
      @alwaysbeeurself Před 4 lety +5

From my understanding, all thoughts come from your mind. I'm assuming thoughts are created through genetic code to determine how to identify what it is perceiving, such as hearing a sound and if you noticed it, your mind identifies it or tries to, so the mind somehow is coded to know that it is experiencing something and just tries to identify what it is experiencing. Our perceptions are innate, and all of our experiences influence our thoughts to identify what something is, and from there trying to figure it out, ect. What this gentleman is speaking of is consciousness, being aware of your thoughts, realizing you are having thought and therefore realize you don't have to have any thought, deciding to experience or not, free will, and to come from a place of consciousness instead of just being how your mind is.

The Universe is a Mental Energy Field.
This Mental Field is the Mind of THAT that we call God.
      This Field is Consciousness.
Consciousness is the "I Am "
The I Am is who is Dreaming all the content.
Consciousness use this Dream to Acknowledge Itself through all the characters.
Consciousness with content is the egoic mind state of THAT/God. Consciousness without content is Pure Consciousness.
There is only One Consciousness, but when It realizes Itself it is known as Pure Consciousness.
You are God Dreaming that is a having a human life, God but in an egoic state.
Enlightenment is when Consciousness Awakens Itself.
The importance to realize your true nature is because the egoic state is the one that believes in everything and it loves to experience all kinds of suffering and pain, although the ego is only an imaginary mental energy.
It's part of this movie-illusion, it's an illusion, our Reality but nonexistent.

I Am is God when It is Dreaming, it believes to be something, a rock, a plant, an insect, a human body or whatever.
When It realizes Itself it acknowledged the Absolute.
      The Absolute doesn't know Itself.
      That's why
      Consciousness is Dreaming.
      Consciousness becomes Conscious of Itself.
      Pure Consciousness is Awareness.

Every Spiritual Master who claims to have realized the ultimate truth as the Self should be asked, from where the whole manifested world or human mind comes from?
If he replies that everything is manifested out of the self then he should be asked if this is in fact and truly his experience?
If he says yes, he should be asked if he CONSCIOUSLY invented e.g. the frog or created the sun?
If he says yes, well.... And if he says "no I didn't CONSCIOUSLY invented nor created anything" then ask him what "higher force" did so, that he is not aware of? And why on earth he claims to have realized the ultimate truth?

Brilliant! The attutide of your comment though, looks as if the search for understanding was a competition. Meaning it's a bit harsh. But it's brilliant and it points to what only few of those who teach understanding ever try to highlight. It could be that they dont highlight it with a reason. To understand what for example Rupert is saying you dont need to kill the ego first. But then, you dont need to kill it at all. When someone trully understands what teacher is talking about your seeing it will disclose that truth to you which you so brilliantly expressed in a concise simple way. That recognition will simply disclose egoic viewpoint and render it redundant. A part of the whole "appearence". I hope i made sence at all

    • @Erik-V
      @Erik-V Před 5 lety +1

Just because anything is created, does not mean that it is consciously created. It is possible to evolve a virtual reality like ours just by setting initial conditions, then pushing the start button and see what it evolves into. Eventually the sun and frogs may evolve out of it, but that is just a result of "dumb/unconscious" evolution, and not a result of being "designed" by a consciousness. Indeed, even God himself might not have consciously invented the frog or the sun, simply because it might not have been consciously invented. He might say though "Well, I created some initial conditions for the big bang, and then I pushed the "run" button, and then all of this came out of it. Pretty neat, huh? And now I can play these cool bodies, but don't ask me how they work."
Also, realizing the ultimate truth does not mean being omniscient. It just means realizing what you fundamentally are, and thus what is fundamentally the true essence of life. That doesn't mean that you then know what everybody had for breakfast this morning.

Think evolution, if our free thoughts and will are mearly a trick of the mind and always have been, would we not be capeable to discover new things and ways of thinking?
      We would never progress?
Wouldnt we still be primates in caves?
Or better yet, if our thoughts are just our brains stimulating these things due to the external stimuli around us, wouldnt everyones thoughts be exactly the same?

Apparently the brain synthesizes existing thoughts and produces a new thought out of the two. Thoughts come from the world I would say. Imprints coming 'from the outside'. Or you say the body is part of the world and was never extracted from the world. The body together with its thought never left the world. Then thoughts are a refined evolutionary form. Only consciousness would be out of the world.
