I've had mine for about 3 months and I haven't met a car I couldn't smoke. It's not even so much that it's fast, it's just nimble af. Drives like it's on rails. I can take a traffic circle at 40mph. Absolutely love this car.

9:18 MKV Supra pulls away on the front straight like the EN is at a full 🛑 yet with only the front wheels, the EN ended up right back on his tail after a few hard corners. Impressive AF

@@joesisler3411 well yeah the supras definitely much faster on the track then the EN and would take him in the corners as well if he was actually going hard or was a serious driver... But I still think the EN (for the price) is really hard to beat as a practical daily and track toy right out the box

    • @Daveyboy_GolfR

@@madrx2 yeah if you would have read my last reply, I stated very clearly that a 3.0T GR Supra on the track will pull away from the EN on all parts of any track.
But these are two different classes of cars. The Supra 6cyl turbo, is a 2seat dedicated track car that also costs almost 30k more (well equipped) than the four-door Elantra compact sedan.
It just so happens they were on the track together so that's why both were discussed.
The EN isn't meant to compete with the 382 HP BMYota Supra.
Only point that I'm making is the EN is a super high performance compact sedan while being quite practical, roomy, and comfortable DD, coming right out of the box pretty much ready for the track. And it's level of performance customization is far beyond what any car offers until you get up to things like the $90,000 m4 or $100,000 Plus CT5-V.
All For about 33k. it is today's ultimate performance bargain.
(Well actually the type R is if it was actually attainable and sold at MSRP which neither are the case 99% of the time.
Coming from a 2015 mk7 Golf R, I've had it for almost 8 years now and time for a change. If I could get a new Type R at least somewhere near the list price then I would do it, but that won't be happening at any dealer I can think of.
Sure the Elantra does not have the refinement or interior materials that my car has, but I never rub my hands along the roof, the surface part of the dash or interior lower part of the door, so if it's made of less than the highest quality of materials, than I'll survive it.
However the touch points that I would consistently interact with in the Elantra N are pretty fantastic, including the seats, the steering wheel, shift knob and handbrake. And that massive 10.3 inch instrument cluster with it's interactive graphics looks sick the way it AMGs it's way to the infotainment system making it seem like it's all one unit.
I think the design is fantastic while also being super responsive and real user friendly. Especially the N modes.
The N division made it so even a 5 year old could figure it out. And finally, the climate controls are very simple knobs and buttons and easy to use as they should be
So yeah of course the Supra would would give the N cars a pretty decent whooping on any track, but it's smaller than an RF Miata in that vabin.. or at least it feels like it.
Even feels smaller than my old AP1 S2000 in the cabin.
You might get better lap times and turn more heads in the Supra No doubt.
Saw one on the road yesterday pull up next to me and it is absolutely stunning in person!! Combined with it's blistering performance and you got a true monster.
A single guy like me in his mid-30s living in South Florida where the roads are smooth as glass with no potholes, and sticky rubber can be kept on all year round, this would be the place where you'd get yourself a Supra, c8 vette, new Z, or any other very low slung dedicated sports car as we don't have to worry about having a stiff suspension, or tons of road undulations and bumps and cracks in the roads cuz they're all nice n smooth . A sports car enthusiasts Paradise.

I own an Elantra N with the DCT and it's really, really fast! In N mode the shifts from the DCT are an absolute hammer and it corners hard - tests put it right at 1g - and the seats do a great job of keeping you upright! I also haul kids around and commute comfortably getting over 30 mpg. I would say that with the DCT the auto creep is too strong which makes coming to a smooth stop difficult, and you can only turn that off in sport or sport + transmission settings, and you have to turn it off every time you start the car. Beyond that I'm not sure what else to complain about. For a performance daily it's as close to perfect a car as I've ever driven. I can feel the eyerolls now but make no mistake and as the leaderboard shows, this is a serious car.
I was very skeptical about a FWD car with this much power and RWD is a blast to be sure but I 100% agree about the behavior when powering out of a corner - it just goes and gathers pace at "I'm going to jail immediately" speeds. Hyundai has created a brilliant car with the Elantra N and having owned one for a while now I can attest that the specialness is always there, it never goes away and you always want to get in it again.

Great review as always. Just wanted to add my personal thoughts on my 2022 Elantra N. 1/4 of my current miles are track miles and I've done around ~10 events this season. The car has been absolutely bulletproof, but beyond that things that are normally accepted to be "required" for track use (pads, fluid) have proven to be perfectly adequate for HPDE4+ levels of track use. I have not yet encountered a scenario that has justified the purchase of track pads, even though it's something I originally budgeted for. It is appearing to be an extremely capable car, and has proven to be very optimized for competition use. I re-broke the SCCA S3 track record at Gingerman this weekend and handedly took home first (granted, only a regional event) beating out a Type R. It's a really great car that keeps on surprising me everyday (in a good way)

Brakes doesn't bite as hard as my old 2017 Civic Sedan which had EBC Yellow stuff (Civic is a lot lighter...which could attribute to better braking performance). I'm considering swapping pads for my first track day and keeping the OEM for dedicated street use. I find at about 160km/hr, it doesn't scrub down the speed as quickly as my old 2700lb Civic (perhaps engine braking from high revving NA engine is reason vs ultimate braking power...)

  • @nstylemotorsportsracing1471

You may have run a little quicker if you had been running 18 PSI of boost. The car has an octane learning system if you were only getting 15 psi the car was being safe. I haven’t taken the N to the track yet so I can’t compare it against my Type R but it’s very interesting to see this test. I will say even the updated Type R grille helps very little and the R still has the same transmission issues with locking out and gear grinds.

I think on a more power oriented track with more open, flowing corners the FK8 would be too fast for the Elantra N, but at this tight and technical track the e-diff and the stickier/wider tires on the Elantra N are a big advantage of the FK8's Ive tried (I've tested 3 stock FK8R's at this circuit as well as a few modified ones so have a pretty good idea how they work at this circuit).

Hey DP, love the channel, long time subscriber and lurker! Just want to let you know that when viewing on my phone (OnePlus 7 Pro), the lap time leaderboard looks small and it is really hard to read the car names and times.
Keep up the good work as you guys are my #1 source of info for car modification!

Need wagon version ASAP! (w/zero changes in trim/options, i.e. no diluting like the TSX wagon (of 2011), or Levorg (cvt only))...can the stiff suspension argument also be compared to James May's complaints about great sports being "ruined" because they were tuned for fast Nurburgring times? A fast street car on the track does not always make a comfortable street car on the street. .:R 🏁

I guess the Veloster N could be considered a wagon? 😆 Although I believe they are phasing our the Veloster as of next year.
