My TikTok For You Page has been lousy with Midwest Emo trends and memes. Which got me thinking: Uh...what's Midwest Emo?
On this episode, I'm joined by music content creator @MicTheSnare and PhD student and associate instructor at Indiana University Bloomington Kyle Fulford to hit rewind on the sounds, history and - yes - the memes of Midwest Emo.

I'm happy i found out about midwest emo without the memes but its still funny
I feel like caP'n Jazz are kinda essential listening in emo for how they bridge the gap between the OG Hardcore-based sound and the softer, mathier sound of Midwest Emo today, Even if they're not necessarily my favourite.
Anyway there definitely are some fantastic song titles out there in the Midwest Emo world. Some of my favourites gotta be "what are the 'whooky sack' lines off of VF(aE)IKPaBTW supposed to mean?" (Still trying to figure this one out..) and "brian tafazoli accidentally drives 9 hours to mt vernon ohio" (A relatable experience to all), Both by Brian Tafazoli.
That rascal Mike Kinsella, doubling up on influential Midwest emo bands. Greedy, if you ask me!

there’s currently both a 5th-wave of emo that is a complete rehash of 4th-wave and a skramz/hardcore revival that is both authentic and innovative

Great video! I never knew much about Midwest emo. I'm gonna check out some of the bands you listed. I honestly think certain elements of Midwest emo made it into my own garage band music without me knowing it. Haha! Also great channel name! I'm from flyover country as well 🤘🎸

you probably know this already but most of marietta's members moved onto a band called narra. it sounds kinda similar to as it were... nothing will ever match marietta but narra isnt half awful

I really love the musicality of mid west emo, it I desperately wish there was a masculine and less whiny mid west emo style band that had hopeful and positive lyrics.
"Real Emo" only consists of the dc Emotional Hardcore scene and the late 90's Screamo scene. What is known by "Midwest Emo" is nothing but Alternative Rock with questionable real emo influence. When people try to argue that bands like My Chemical Romance are not real emo, while saying that Sunny Day Real Estate is, I can't help not to cringe because they are just as fake emo as My Chemical Romance (plus the pretentiousness). Real emo sounds ENERGETIC, POWERFUL and somewhat HATEFUL. Fake emo is weak, self pity and a failed attempt to direct energy and emotion into music. Some examples of REAL EMO are Pg 99, Rites of Spring, Cap n Jazz (the only real emo band from the midwest scene) and Loma Prieta. Some examples of FAKE EMO are American Football, My Chemical Romance and Mineral EMO BELONGS TO HARDCORE NOT TO INDIE, POP PUNK, ALT ROCK OR ANY OTHER MAINSTREAM GENRE!!!!

Was walking the dog yesterday and my mind wandered to the Midwest Emo CZcams clips, and wondering just where the heck all these "memes" came from.
