  • From emotional beginnings in D.C. to the emo revival, emo has seen it all. Emo’s not dead. Let's be honest, we've all been a little emo at some point. In this video I go over the history of Midwest EMO. A cozy, soft, melodic sound that defined the 90s. From punk rock and hardcore roots, to mainstream success and rise and fall and the emo revival. From D.C to warped tour to When We Were Young. From Rites of Spring to American Football, to Sunny Day Real Estate, The Get Up Kids, the promise ring, braid, to Blink 182, Green Day, My Chemical Romance, Taking Back Sunday, Paramore to Modern Baseball, Title Fight, Touche Amore, Joyce Manor, Pool Kids, Oso Oso, Hot Mulligan, Neck Deep, Origami Angel, Spanish Love Songs, Alkaline Trio and Glass Beach. Embrace Midwest EMO and the 902s/2000s nostalgia and be an elder emo.

The 90s emo scene (if you want to call it a scene) had such a high density of amazing bands. Sunny Day Real Estate, Braid, Mineral, Texas is the Reason, Rainer Maria, The Get Up Kids, Cap n’ Jazz, Jimmy Eat World, The Promise Ring, Knapsack, Everyone Asked About You, Christie Front Drive, Boys Life, Jejune, American Football, Endive, and more.

It’s a good point that the Emo scene embraces the different sound. The first time I was introduced to them I was given a mix CD. The other kid said track 16 is the twinkle one I like by American football. The other half of the CD? Planes Mistaken for Stars.
I also saw Owen (Mike Kinsella solo project) in a show with planes mistaken for stars, from autumn to ashes, and Thursday). It was completely normal.

I've always loved the genre but never had the balls to jump into it haha. I kinda played around with a more midwest emo sound on my last album, Carpe Diem but it feels really good to just jump 10 toes deep into it now. @@NeverNormal i thought i was trippin when i read your response omg i was like “wait, wasnt there a similar video that i commented this on and got a similar response?” I had to look back 😂
To add on because I listened to some stuff today; Cap’n Jazz’s Little League, at the third verse you have:
      Hey Ringwald haze
We're using bruises like Bruce Lee
In a haste to bruise me
And I've given all I could give
I've taken all I could take
I've pushed all that I could push
I've pulled all that I could pull
This is one of those lyrics that make you wanna shout while driving after a breakup
Then I listened to The Appleseed Cast from Kansas, idk if they count but they’re close enough lol their song Steps and Numbers:
Do you feel alone in the secret?
Are you standing there just weeping?
Do you feel the light is gone?
Is it hard to remain strong?
In the face of all you know
In a world that's brought you low
      Stand there, dance with
Stand there, dance with a memory
The caption reads "it's all over now"
This whole song is an instant thousand stare no matter what im doing

It's pretty awesome to see that a Latino rock song like "A La Hora Señalada/Hermanita" has a style that predates an entire genre in another part of the world. I have recently been getting into Latino alternative rock because I am Venezuelan-American myself, and I have been wanting to brush up my Spanish. I highly recommend "Otro Dia Mas" by Bye Sami, "Apoyo Emocional" by Estoy Bien, and uklao's self-titled album.

It does predate midwest emo but it doesn't predate US and UK post punk, jangle pop and/or dream pop which was already incorporating that type of guitar style into its music in the early 80s. R.E.M. in the early to mid 80's was laying a foundation for a lot of what the midwest emo, indie and slowcore bands did later on. Cocteau Twins and the Cure were doing it too.
The style evolved from a ton of different genres probably as far back as the 60s with maybe The Beach Boys. It's fair to credit hardcore and punk because you can trace the lineage easily with band members and record labels, venues, etc but it's evident that there were much earlier examples of the sound. I'm sure eventually we'll find some finger style guitarist from the 50s who did a twinkle daddy riff at one point.
It's pretty fun to hear the evolution of music.

There is nothing more Midwest than these lyrics which succinctly summarizes my childhood from 1978-1983 in rural Ohio:
    Lemonade stands and memories
    Of innocence and purity
And the noonday sun at ninety degrees
The things I carry with me
The ice cream man at four or five
How'd we flag him down and ask for rides
And evenings when we'd sit outside
And name the cloud shapes in the sky
Those days are gone now and we must carry on
But I will not forget the things I learned on your front lawn
And how we rode those dusty trails
On Huffys and Schwinns from Christmas sales
Made forts out of crates with rusty nails
And only came home when our stomachs failed

6 years ago ended my relationship with my ex fiancé, drifted around for 6 months drinking, sleeping with random girls, and partying hard trying to get my head straight. Ran into a meme page with someone flipping off a house and everyone saying American Football, had to look it up and heard Never Meant and fell in love instantly. Later I heard a Ska Version from Skatune Network which I started to love as well which later on put out a version of Misery Business with the lead singer of Pool Kids and led me to Math Rock and more Midwest Emo and I was fully hooked. For as great and important as American Football is, I have trouble viewing that album as particular quintissential for the genre ('quintissential' in the sense of 'the MOST midwest emo thing,' rather than the best midwest emo thing). The jazz influences and lack of angsty breakup lyrics really make it feel very different from most other midwest emo albums to me. Which is great! I like that they clearly aren't like other bands in the genre. They really are as good as everyone says!
If I had to pick a quintissential album for the genre, I think either one of Mineral's albums would be candidates for the most pure refinement of that sound -- I think modern midwest emo bands resemble them more than anything else in the 90s. Texas Is the Reason's Do You Know Who You Are and The Promise Ring's Nothing Is Good would also be strong candidates in my book. (The Promise Ring is there for people who like the hypier elements of midwest emo -- I like those too, but when a band leans too much into them, I have trouble hearing it as emo anymore. This is why I wouldn't put Something to Write Home About or Frame and Canvas as candidates for the quintessential emo album, even though Frame and Canvas is my favorite album you mentioned in this video and one of the best albums of the 90s. I don't want to angst to most of those albums, I just want to headbang to them.)

i really see so few people talking about Mayday Parade online, i dont know if i would call them Midwest exactly, but they are very Midwest leaning .. even "is this band emo?" says they aren't emo, but wiki does, and they were big in my emo friend group in 2010-ish!

I saw them live in Berlin, February 1st, with State Champs and Simple Plan! That was fucking magical! They played Piece of Your Heart from Sunnyland, and one of their new songs, More Like A Crash, such a banger!
State Champs is also really good, it was the first time i heard about them when i booked the tickets, but now I'm hooked!

08:45 the reason it was adopted by the schmorgasborg that is indie, underground, DIY, hardcore kids is in the video that immediately preceeds. The Fireside Bowl was the venue, since 1994 was basically a garden of musical divesity with shows intentionally booked with bands that should never have, and today would never play with each other. Just Google Fireside Bowl fliers and look at any other the fliers lets see...

Would you really like a 5-hour video just listing off every single band thats ever been described as emo? I will say though, in a decade chock full of buried treasure, Slowdown Virginia and Commander Venus are some of the best hidden gems of the 90's!

When you talk about midwest emo pioneers I feel like there's a big misunderstanding here. Even Mike and Steve from the band said that they weren't labelled as emo at the time because it was so disjointed from the punk kind of sound. the band started to gain notoriety with the internet age and was labelled as emo after. so no one was comparing the sound of american football with what other midwest emo bands were doing, at least for a period of time.

    • @victorthiago5115
      @victorthiago5115 Před 5 měsíci

so i think cap'n jazz is kind of more important to the scene, it came way before and really defined the 90s emo sound, and american football defined the late 2000s emo sound
