The city was pretty but not well done. If you looked at the city without knowing it was supposed to be in china you wouldn’t think it was in china. Even the graffiti is in English.
Actually saw the walled city in December of 92’.
The government had just completed the eviction process (after trying to gain control of the place for years), and it was finally torn down a few months later.
Even though it was by all accounts a horrible place…As an OG cyberpunk junkie, seeing it was one of the defining moments of my life.
That's nuts. Probably a million times more visceral to see it in real life.

Labyrinthine stairways and halls leading to nothing…
Broken disused infrastructure in constant need of repair…
Whispers behind every corner…
It’s truly terrifying in this context.
Because unlike most games of this type…
This place was absolutely real.
For those interested, Jackie Chan (yes, THAT Jackie Chan) starred in one of the only movies ever filmed in the walled city…
1993s “Crime Story”, which was filming while I was there. Gives a pretty good look into what the place actually looked like.
One of his few “serious” films, highly recommended.

There are a small, small number of games that have a "yeah, fuck this" ending. One of them is even titled "Realistic Ending". The moment something weird happens, you can just nope the fuck out of there, like in Lixian's Late Night Mop.

Living in a cramped city already sounds horrible. They could’ve made this game about normal day-to-day living in the city and it probably would’ve been as scary.

The glass city is all about control. I hear they don't want anyone straying farther than a ridiculously small distance from home. They make it sound fantastic, but when you break it down, it's just about control. They're going to stack us like the people of Kowoon, down in the lower levels (if they cramp us together like the glass city implies), while the rich get to sit up at the top and actually see the outside.
Honestly the words give me liberty or give me death perfectly describe what I think of that idea
Oh yeah, kowloon, that was too difficult for even China to govern, is a prime example of how ultradense housing "is about control". /s They had to threaten to demolish the place and people still insisted on staying!
No, the "plan" is that everything you need is within a 5 minute walk of your home. And it's two long walls, with open sky and gardens in the middle so that you can be out in the open even if you live at the bottom.
But of course this city will never be finished since Saudi Arabia never finishes anything because their royal family all have severe ADHD and think they're the Jetsons

Kowloon Walled City was a horror setting just by itself.
It was not INTENDED to be that, but it became it. This is what happens when you shove a bunch of people into an area, and then say "we are not taking care of you, take care of yourself, or die, whatever."
i love how its knows when you calm down then throws out jumpscares in your face and at the same time how it builds up suspense only to find nothing happened
After watching a dozen players tackle this game, I'm pretty sure that end jumpscare happens only if you didn't find the dog food at the start... 🤔
With all the layers on layers of building Kowloon had built on it, and how densely populated it was, I'm surprised there weren't more ghosts and other supernatural things going on in the inner walls.
I guess, reality is already grim enough for those who lived at that place, they don't really need any supernatural things to experience horror itself.
Living a terrible life stray you away from supernatural events like that. Your perception will be also different so ghost haunts won't do anything if it can't give you money or fill your stomach.
If only such beings were real. Fuck science for disproving them

This video might have actually added some context to a weird encounter I had back in '06. I was on the way back to the US from the Philippines and had an overnight layover in Hong Kong. We decided to take a taxi to some touristy thing I can't remember except for the guidebook said it was in Kowloon (apparently a district, not Kowloon Walled City). The driver was super friendly, but didn't know much English. When we said we were trying to get to Kowloon, he seemed to get upset and basically told us "NO KOWLOON. ONLY HONG KONG", then basically kicked us out of the taxi and we ended up having to call a different one. This new guy got us to the mall/park thing we were trying to see, but we just showed him the page in the guidebook and were too scared to mention Kowloon in case it triggered him too, lol.
Kowloon was very unregulated, crime happened there often. It was dangerous as all hell to go to

In 2006? I think you have it wrong. Kowloon is just a district i find it strange they'd react that way. I grew up in HK and had friends who lived in kowloon... by then the walled city was long gone, and it wasnt any more sketchy than other parts of the city. More likely that this guy was only servicing a certain district in HK, (blue taxis only service certain parts whereas green taxis service other parts and so on) and he didn't want to leave the area he was supposed to service lol
I found myself yelling, "wait! Don't forget the dog food!" when you were leaving the store. Not gunna lie, it bothered me a lot more than I thought it would lmfao 🤣

Distopian horror is really cool and can be extremely terrifying in so many different ways if done correctly, this is a pretty rad game.
I woke up sick this morning and I haven’t been able to do anything all day, usually when I’m sick I’m just in a terrible mood until I’m not sick anymore but your videos never fail to make me feel better and take my mind off the sickness even if it’s just for a few minutes. ❤❤❤

The Kowloon Walled City is such a fascinating thing. An entire city that sprang up because of a treaty dispute that left a block of land unclaimed by either of the two Empires that bordered it.
And yeah "The Line" is such a nonsense thing. Like legitimately I watched the promo video they put out for it and I kept waiting for it to transition into a Horror Sequence. Like you just have the screen splash with blood and the camera pulls back to reveal you're watching a TV Screen playing the advert as the city around it has descended into carnage.
If you remember the movie Bloodsport with Jean-Claude Van Damn where he and Jackson are walking through the passage ways to the tournament. That was the real Kowloon Walled City. Lots of Reality in that movie scene.
I have not seen that one. Might have to check it out.
IGP if you think the walled off city is cool you need to check out the five-story amusement facility in Kawasaki, Japan. It's called: Warehouse Kawasaki. Sadly closed down but the images of this place it crazy intresting.
This game looks genuinely terrifying, such realistic lighting and the tight spaces and corners just add to the horror vibe. One could only imagine what it was like to live in the actual place.

LOVE when I learn about real locations from horror games. I learned about Centralia, PA and its spooky story after I played Silent Hill.
The atmosphere in this game is amazing, especially the flashlight mechanic!
The jumpscares/horror elements got old soon after their first appeared, but some few still got me good.

This game is honestly amazing. it really feels like a labyrinth of endless rooms. it's almost like you're in a maze of apartments and you feel like you'll never get out. Definitely feels like a backrooms level lol. i also like how well the game let's you know that no matter where you are, you're always in danger. One thing i hate about the game is that there's only 1 point where you're actually in danger which is during the Chase sequence. Other than that very good, but short horror game!

In a poverty-stricken place like the one in the game. Most people have to take out their own trash. Even though it means walking up and down the stairs to a designated trash area. There is even a chance that the trash will not be collected. Sometimes there isn't even a decent plumbing for a toilet. If hot water is not available. You have to boil your own water just to take a decent warm or hot bath.
This game got me just as bad as you bro, they bogus for that last one lol, always quality content IGP!

the pictures you looked up don't do it justice. Kowloon started as a military outpost and expanded over time as chino was taken over. but it was a lot bigger than what you saw. but in the center was empty (small section) but it has been demolished.
I looked a little more, it's absolutely insane.

i actually had the chance to go there before it was demolished. there was a lot of drugs and gangs going on but the people there would help one another when needed. it sounds super scary and stuff but they had there own system and EVERYONE new each other. stealing and violence only happened to people that did something wrong to begin with.

@@Hawk7886 not really. Alaska has over half a million people, while the walled city of Kowloon, touted as the densest population at the time, housed 33,000 people in the space of a city block. Whittier, however, has a population of under 300.
Fun fact: Alaska has actually moved out of the spot of the third least populated state. It now has a larger populace than D.C. (third), Vermont (second), and Wyoming (first).
This has gotta be one of the scariest horror games I’ve ever seen IGP play, every door had me anticipating a jump scare and when they happen I jumped so hard, I haven’t jumped this much from jump scares since I was like 12 watching FNAF gameplays lmfao
