    I saw ignorance not prejudice in this show. He never actually hated, he was fearful and whilst it was linguistically challenging, they always ended up socialising and being neighbourly.
    The hatred everyone attributes comes more from them than in the show. It's why it was so good, it was a mirror upon which personal values and ideologues where challenged.
    A great way to teach acceptance and demonstrate equality is not to condemn or humiliated, but to personally reflect and review. This like "Mind Your Language" and "Desmond's" did a good job demystifying the misapprehension and fear many had before international travel became far more popular.

    Well, in the early 1980's I lived on the Isle of Portland and had a Saturday evening bar job in the local football club's 'nightclub' (more of a local pub that stayed open until 2 a.m.). There was one black man on the island, Ivan, (adopted), 6' 4" and a local character. One night, he was bent over the bar just grinning at me, but I didn't know why. A few minutes later, he stood up suddenly and I got an eyeful of what looked no bigger - or smaller - than white man's 'bits' I'd seen. He had been standing with his trousers around his ankles, when one of his mates had pulled his underpants down 😂. The island had an annual carnival and decided to have a carnival king and the first year, he was elected carnival king. The following year, all his mates blacked up, wore Afro wigs and entered giving themselves names like 'Matt Black'. Everyone, including Ivan, thought it was hilarious because there was no malice and no-one had told anyone, including Ivan, they should be offended. Oh to be back in those innocent, happy times.

      why was he standing at a bar with trousers round his ankles in first place??

      What a great story. I will add that there was real racism that must have been hard to bare that's why this series resonated. BUT there was also humour, acceptance and real moments and friendships like you described. I wish you we could joke more as we did. Or had comedies like this that challenged ppl with smart humour.

    • @shirleyswaine4701
      @shirleyswaine4701 Před 5 měsíci

      @@Lioness_UTV Yes, of course there was real racism, there always will be - in all races, but back then, unless it was overtly nasty and malicious, it wasn't regarded as racism i.e. it was common, if there was just one black man in a work place, for him to be nicknamed, ironically, 'Chalkie'. And, at the time the 'Love they neighbour' was made, there was no internet and only three tv channels and many white people had never even seen a black man, let alone knew any more about them than they'd been taught in school or seen on tv programmes about Africa.

    Really glad you chose this one, but can't help noticing you backing off from the things Eddie comes out with. You're supposed to, and so was the 'white' audience when this was made. Racism was a major topic in Britain when this was made, and this - even though in the format of a sitcom - was one of the shows that addressed it. Being British TV, it doesn't hold back and make everything nice - just funny. Eddie is an ignorant bigot set up as a mouthpiece for every post-empire pr*ck Britain had available, strident but ultimately pathetic, and always ending up as the fall guy. Bill met him with wit and dignity, but also had his own male faults and odd political opinions. It was the two wives, Joan and Barbie, who were the wise heads in the series. It misfired a lot, true, and gets a lot of flak in these ''different' times, but you can see the intention.

    British tv during the 1970's had an abundance of great comedy, this show was NOT one of them. This was drivel from start to finish

    This show should not be available anywhere. It is horrible through & through. It was the 70's but still offensive.

    • @unclenogbad1509
      @unclenogbad1509 Před 6 měsíci +4

      This is exactly what I mean in my post, above. This was nowhere near the best of British sitcoms (it was ITV for f's sake) but it was a solid attempt to address a division existing in British society. If you're offended by Eddie's words, remember that they were common currency at the time. He's an ignorant bigot - and not meant to be sympathised with - so what language would you give him? The show attacked racism as an absurdity and a carry-over from Imperial Britain, with its demeaning stereotypes and patronising attitude of superiority. It would never work today, sure, because we genuinely have moved on from such times - fortunately - but back then, naiive as it may have been, it was part of the process of addressing this fault line in British society. Judge history by its times, not through a modern (and, frankly, equally patronising) lens.
