Grew up watching this show and still watch it. I think the beauty of this show and the Eddie character is that it highlights how ridiculous racism, and the misconceptions that drive racism are.

Back in those days, a with typical British irony, a black worker was often nicknamed 'Chalkie'. As others have said, back then it was just banter, people weren't offended because they hadn't been told they should be. In the early '80's I had a part-time job one night a week in a youth club and the group I was in charge of nicknamed me 'Olive Oyl' later shortened to just 'Olive'. My sensitive ego was less than flattered until the club leader said it was good they'd given me a nickname, it meant they'd accepted me and that was when I realised that is exactly what nicknames are about, they are not 'bullying' as we are told now, but a badge of honour.

Had tears of laughter rolling down my face with tissue in hand lol. Aussie here, I remember watching that on TV here when I was a child. That humour broke down so many barriers. We still need more now. Best way to help solve so many problems - through humour and laughter which makes you understand how ridiculous racism is. A brilliantly written tv show. Similar to the USA American show Archie Bunker, All in The Family with Carroll O’Connor

I fully agree, watched this and Archie Bunker, Welcome back Cotter ( or Kotter) can't remember, as well. You had four TV channels and no computers or mobile phones. And laugh with your mates at school the next day about last nights episode. Good times, which was also a funny TV show. All the best from Melbourne.

@@judyparsons1333 Reactionaries are snowflakes. They are up in arms about being asked to be considerate, kind and polite. They lack self awareness altogether. They need trigger warnings that trigger warnings may be used. And we are talking about protecting the vulnerable here. There isn't anything good about any of this hate for young people. I lived through the seventies too. And I am glad we have outgrown some of the values espoused then. Music was definitely better though. Some of the humour really hasn't aged well. The real problem we face now though is how easily people are manipulated by content creators. The same tactics that got us hooked on junk is being used to make us hate on each other. Standard reactionary nonsense we have suffered since forever - only now it is on steroids.

The more you watch this show the more you see how it’s a perfect example of how a lot of British people’s friendships are built off I insult you and you insult me and we both get to have a laugh with the thing eddie and bill share most in common being that love of winding each other up so much that they wouldn’t know what to do without each other not that either of them would ever admit it as insulting and messing with each other is a British form of showing affection because we respect those who can take it and enjoy a bit of back and forth which is something that seems to have been lost on some of the American influenced youngers!

First time I watched this I must admit I felt offended ( sexist , I’m a woman) and obviously racist but when the racism is back and forth it just makes it funny … I’m Scottish and my first time down south ( 33 years ago) I got called a sweaty sock from a bartender ( rhymes with Jock) if yiu don’t already know is slang for a Scott … anyway I wasn’t offended at all … fast forward 33 years and the ‘woke’ brigade tells us all to be offended … when in fact it’s the intention behind the word that constitutes it being offensive …. We are all one.
Let’s not let the woke brigade determine for us all what’s right and wrong. We know ourselves what’s right and wrong …. If anything it’s communism they promote. Fuck that !!!!

The entire British philosophy to tackle any subject is to absolutely rip the piss out of it.
Look at Carry on Films or Blackadder.
Look at Blackadder goes forth. Every household in the country lost someone in WW1 There are Cenotaphs all over the country with Names of the fallen on. The writers ripped the piss out of it but then gave us the greatest closing scene of any sitcom.
Nowadays it's cry and whine and whinge about everything.

I absolutely loved this show back in the day and still love it now it was way ahead of its time and neither side won. It's great to see that the women were reasonable with each other and how comedy can be used to portray ignorance, racism, perceptions and responses to it. My only complaint about YOUR videos are that your reaction to them would be better as the smaller one and y toge actual show should've been the bigger of the two. It's hard to see it on my phone 😩. As a kid I saw the 2 women as the heroes of the show because they had the brains while the 2 men were idiots.
The 2 male actors both got on off screen and detested the racism, as did the writers.
