Great and informative video. I love how you included the thermometer and air pump for new fish keepers to understand.
dude you are a life savor you know so much for someone who really loves fish but doesn't know much about it. Thankyou very much you got a SUB from me!!!
So glad I just found this playlist! I was just getting a list together for a tank. This helps get it in order.
This is a very educational video. I just have one question that you can't answer; who the hell is disliking these videos???? The information is pertinent, accurate and informative. I would like to see the tanks and hear an explanation from the 10 or so haters in this forum. Can we say "trolls"?????????
Fantastic advice for the beginner, helping us to better understand the basic bits and pieces required for the aquarium. Delivered in a simple to understand and highly interesting way. Thank you.
Paul
Hi John, I too am trying to read your 8/15 BLOG post about the 55 Gallon tanks, but keep getting "File Not Found" error on your site. Thanks for all your help, love the videos & Podcast!
Thank you so much for making this video!!!!!
great video,i started with one tank and it grow into two, love your videos
I was just starting in this hobby and this helped a LOT
Regarding heaters - I keep 5 gallon nano tanks for bettas and I tend to like my home on the cool side so I use a 50 watt heater in the winter (I live in Canada so winters are cold) and switch to a 25 watt heater in the summer. This way the heaters don't work too hard in the winter or over heat in the summer, plus if a heater fails I have a backup heater in a pinch. Have been doing this for years and it works for me. Have never had any problems maintaining the water temperature around 80 degrees year round.
These videos are so helpful
cheers john, another brilliant and informative video
The only thing I would disagree on is tank size. A 55g being long or tall does give many many options. It’s a great tank for the intermediate person who is becoming a hobbies. My op is the Marineland 29g kit is the single best starter for anyone. Smaller tanks are way way too difficult to deal with cycling. Larger tanks are always better here. But a 55g that is 36” or 48” long is a BIG tank for most people that are not dedicated. Between heating, lighting, and especially filtration costs become a lot more then most beginners are willing to spend. The result will be under-filtration requiring them to purchase better equipment and media sooner then some can afford. Probably several times over as they learn. With a smaller tank you can afford to have crap filtration with good flow like most boxed HOB filters provide. As people learn they will mod the filters for better cycling. But spending $8-900 on a 55g store bought everything for initial setup then learning the hard way as we all have... will result in a lot of broke people selling medium tanks and stands. Check out FB ship swap or Craig’s list and 90% of what you’ll find is someone selling a complete tank, filter, stand even fish for next to nothing in some sort of 55 size. This is a crawl before you walk scenario. Easier to learn on a smaller tank with less dead fish then a large tank with lots of dead fish needing a decent amount of reinvestment for proper equipment for said tank size. Imop you are recommending beginner hobbiest setups to beginner fish keepers who more then likely don’t even now their tap water needs to be treated before going into the tank. I helped a lady just last weekend who started with 30 normal goldfish in a 40g tank and until last week didn’t even know she need d to change or filter the water at all. She was literally just removing 80% of the tank water and replacing it straight from the tap and feeding 3x a day 2 Big pinches of standard flake food. In 2 weeks she went from 30 to 6 fish. The best way I explained things to her is pool water she had a pool and understood testing pool water so I was able to make that connection. I also helped her to stop buying bio filters for her filter and had her purchase regular sponges and some stability and prime. One to help start the cycle she was killing off and the other to detox while her tank cycled for the first time ever. We have all been at this a very very long time and forget how green many are to this hobby. Most don’t even know to detox their tap water.
I can kinda of agree with you to a point. I have been keeping aquariums on and off over the years, usually running 20 gallon tanks. But I didn't know what I thought I knew in the past, which resulted in many unexplained fish deaths and me quitting the hobby various times. I have since decided to stay with it, upgrading to a 55 gallon community tank, a 20 gallon tank and a 3.5 gallon tank with a Betta fish. I have since learned about the nitrogen cycle, something that I was unfamiliar with in the past. I have invested in better equipment, I now do regular tank maintenance and feed my fish an varied diet. The result? I now have 3 fish tanks with happy fish that are not constantly dying. But it took a lot of trial and error and I do not know if a 55 gallon tank is the right tank for a beginner aquarist. But I have graduated up to one and now I am doing my thing.
My old lady got me a 55 gallons tank and stand for an anniversary gift, came with a really nice looking fluval light the guy thought was broken. I took the power button off and cleaned it and now it works like new
Also LOVE the vids i am planinng on getting Fish So........... thx FOR the help
Woah! 55 gallons to start?
Brilliant
Another fantastic video from a fantastic you tuber . I am buying a 180 Rio 180 liters . Almost 50 gallons I have not decided on which fish . I want your suggestion of a colorful fish that are active and smart .
Great videos..very helpful..thank you..I have followed the entire series and have tank set up...how many fish can I add the first time..dont want the ammonia to spike..is 3 Cory cat fish..and 3 sword tails to many??
Stands are actually very important. You would want want one that will last forever as you don’t want it collapsing which will happen because of getting wet and degrading over time.
you didn't mention the submersible filter. I have a submersible in one side and a cascade on the other. 70g so far it works
Ill just keep lake Erie in my house so i can at best maybe hold 2 common plecos but that might even be pushing it might need to upgrade to lake superior so I can keep 3
I’m starting with a 20g planted. Wish I had the room for a 55g though. I can feel the limitations of a 20g
I have been into this for a little while but never to crazy and I have started to put a little more money into three system but wish I had a bigger tank. it is around a 45 50 gallon and don't have any real crazy fish just some koi . I purchased a Marineland canister filter that is over sided for the tank recommended for a 100 but flows 360gph so would I need a water pump and went with the led lights as I was told the one I purchased helps the plants grow . if there is any advice that would be great.
Hey, we are looking into getting our first fish tank. Do you think that an Oscar and African Chiclids could be in the same tank? Also as a bottom feeder can snails be in the tank?
Hello, I would like to know if a Aqua clear 50 would be ok for my upright 33 gallon aquarium or should I go with the Aqua clear 70?
Do fancy goldfish require a heater 🤔
Hi can i ask. Do i still need an air pump if i have a hang on the back filter? I have a 16 gal tank
The more your water moves the less mosquitoes 🦟
can i put the water almost to the edge with any filter?? im gonna buy a 55 gallon tank in this days
The blog links don't seem to be available today. Get the File Not Found page when I click your link above or on the web site.
+DPBradley That's strange, it works for me. I'll look into it.
+KGTropicals another fantastic video, thankyou so much
Heya I wanted to ask, if I live in a tropical climate (I live in Singapore), do we need a heater?
i just purchased a 75 gallon fish tank you would recommend the cylinder filter over the mounted filter?
It depends upon how much current you want in your tank.
That, in turn, will depend upon your fish. If you're going to fill your tank with Gouramis and other slow water fish, an over the back filter and maybe an airstone will suffice.
For faster water river fish, like Garras and Hillstream Loaches, a strong canister is more appropriate.
And it wouldn't hurt to use both
Should have added a test kit to the equipment list.
Anyone tell me if there is any reason a canister filter can't be sitting next to the tank vrs underneath??? As long as the tank is a little taller I just don't see a problem.... everything I read says must be underneath and my 75 gallon is going on a counter with no cabinets underneath...
I live in a tropical place, I think I don't need a heater
links not working for me today either
Good list ill probably use this list come February when I buy my 55 gallon. Thanks! Is there any reason why you like Marineland? they always seem to have 3 stars. I've been looking at aquaclear brand but I wanted to know what you liked about marineland filters.
+Sergio Vasquez I don't have an affiliation with Marineland or anything, I've just used their filters so much over the years and they've been good for me. For the money I think they are a great buy, you can get 2 Penguin 350s for the cost of 1 AC-110.
I always liked the wheel look on their filters but they always had 3 or 3 and half stars on amazon. But I do like them and I'm always looking for a cheaper option that's equally as good. I'll probably go for Marineland filet in February for my 55 gallon. Which one do you recommend for it? A topic that I haven't found on your videos is what are the best bottom feeders for an African cichlid tank?
+Sergio Vasquez I've known people to use Clown Loaches and been successful though I've never done it personally. It's hard to find some that wont get terrorized by the Africans, standard Plecos usually work well though.
I've heard of clown loaches but they require big big tanks. I have a white crayfish and she is doing good but she can't clean it all. I'm thinking plecos. Thanks for all your help John! Keep the awesome videos and podcasts coming I'll send you another video of my fish tank for your podvids.
is a 65 liter a good size?
Page not exist anymore. :(
the link on your website doesn't work. :(
I have 1 fish 1 vacuum cleaner and 1 window cleaner 🐠
Lol my apartment can only have 20 gallon
Will cats eat the fish or do anything
The cat will probably try eating the fish but if you have a lid there should be no problem except that the fish being a bit scared sometimes.
Dammit i dont have a stand :(
I really think that you use powerdirector?🤔🤔🤔🤭🤭
who know how big in centimetres 55 gallon tank is i am living in the netherlands we use 1 litres and 2 centimetres we don't use gallons or inches so i have no idea how big a 55 gallon tank even can be
