EGO - IT'S THE TESLA OF LAWNMOWERS - EGO 21" Select Cut Self-Propelled Lawn Mower Review

  • 6 years ago I was sick of running out of gas, having gas spill everywhere when tipping the mower over to clean it, having my starter cord break, and of course having it not start when I wanted to quickly mow the lawn - I bought my first EGO electric lawnmower and have never looked back.
6 years later and WOW - what a difference! It's made the chore of mowing the lawn almost enjoyable :)

Lightweight is good and what did I use it for it’s a lawnmower czcams.com/users/postUgkxTPN04aT-Qdjr_KS3ql7ng8wnU3wwsCqk also recommend Yes it is lightweight so hence not as robust as our old one. But if you take care it does the job really well.

I’ve watched a couple other reviews on this mower and after yours I’m sold. I’ve never owned a mower but am excited to do my yard myself. It’ll pay for itself in one or two seasons. I have St. Augustine that’s been neglected and I’ve learned the best thing you can do for it is mow it high and often. Thanks for the nice review. 🌿

It will not last you long enough to pay for itself, these are GARBAGE, had one for one year now, all was dandy and nice the first year, now i have to charge the battery 3 times to do a small yard, where I charged once at the beginning. DO NOT BUY THIS, AND DO NOT LISTEN to people who do a review of a BRAND NEW MACHINE.

I found a basket case mower that I put together from parts and I realized that it made me happy every time I mow (six years and counting). Self-propel is not necessary if you have a small lawn but ball bearing wheels is a must. Quiet design is also necessary. The Ego is a great choice if you are not mechanically inclined but I recommend not collapsing the handle often to save the wires from shorting out.

    • @brianwhoreadsobjectiveinfo1122
      @brianwhoreadsobjectiveinfo1122 Před rokem

Collapsing the handle pinches the black & red wires that stop the motor from starting and running. This connector can be separated and either the male or female side of the connector can have its red & black holes or pins connected with a jumper wire, any size that fits. several youtube vids show how to make this jumper wire, but I saw none for when the pins of the connector were on the motor (vs handle) side. The jump has to be on the motor side to fool the motor into thinking that the circuit has been completed up to the handle and back, something that does not happen when the handle is collapsed (so the motor cannot start).

What I found to be the most impressive thing about these mowers is the fact that the mower is light enough that it will actually propel itself without have to really push it. This has been very important with my bad back. If we hadn't moved to a yard that is smaller this year, I was going to purchase the zero turn rider.

Your review is about #25 of what I have watched today. It started with looking for string trimmers with telescoping shaft, but I also need a mower that I can use. I'm a 68 year old, 5'2" grandma with a bad back. But often my husband has other attachments on his John Deere mowing tractor, so the lawn has to wait. That's a nope for me. So, I want my own. All of our other products are DeWalt brand and didn't want to leave. I have an awesome 10" chainsaw, that fits me perfectly but can go through a 7" tree trunk like butter. Your review is great. The adjustable handle is perfect for me. I can see that this will be probably the easiest on my back. Thank you! Now if I could just find a robust string trimmer that is my height!

Agree Ego is thumbs up from our experience........
my wife and I bought an Ego self propelled mower 2 years ago when we moved and bought a house..... I had an Ego blower all ready so we decided to stay with the Ego battery system.....
if needed I can run the mower or blower on either batteries..... have to say we are happy with it..... quiet, no worries about gas and tune ups, mow, mulch, easy to adjust the height, self-propel works great mowing or as you say just moving it back to the garage or shed, can be stored up on it's rear..... no issues with it .. I want it to last so we don't abuse it, no issues with battery life so far.... my advice is to sharpen the blade when needed..... my wife isn't afraid to use it either.... I'd say to check this brand out for sure

I have the old one (non-self propelled) for about five years now. Today I had difficulty and started to bog down. Naturally (husbands) started complaining that’s it’s getting old. I convinced my finance committee (wife) that the new one has better technology. She agreed to get the latest self propelled model. But in reality I think it was my dull blade, aging battery, and wet grass that did it. Not the unit itself which will probably last more years. Regardless, I can benefit from the self propulsion and more torque motor anyway. We have two Tesla vehicles so I can relate to what you said. I needed the comparison between the old and new models so I’m glad I found this video. Needless to say I’m heading to Lowe’s tomorrow.

This will be the 7th summer for my 21" self propelled EGO. I will NEVER buy another brand. I've tried two other brands. The first one, a 19" Black and Decker battery mower, purchased in 2003. It did ok but took overnight to charge, ugh! And had no self propel. In four years, it would not finish the whole yard before dying, even after I had the batteries replaced. Off to auction it went. Then, right before I bought my EGO, I tried a Greenworks battery mower; pitiful. Returned it, went to HomeDepot and bought my EGO. It's been an awesome mower ever since. I will get another one when this one dies. I'm loving the new features noted in this video! The battery charges in real time, too, which is soooo helpful. 15 min of charge time gets you 15 min of mow time; no more overnight charging, yay!!!

I have been using Toro self pacers for around 20 years, The first on lasted for 11 years, I bought the second one it last maybe 7 or so years and the latest one that the transmission broke yesterday after 3 years or so . They seem to be building them with cheaper material and the engines seem to be getting smaller and smaller. However, I love the concept of using electrical power and going green However, Like you, I detest mowing yards and I grow whatever nature allows. Unless inflation has something to say about those sales. Lowes has them now. I got mine at home depot back then. I’m not going back to gas mowers again. Vehicles on the other hand is another story. At least I can replace this battery easily and much more cheaper than an EV. I don’t think self propelled mowers are worth it with ego. It will just eat up more battery. Battery is still holding up on its charge to date. One thing though as you are mowing the side discharge of the mower gets clogged up especially if you have that really thick green grass. So you will have to stop and clean it out frequently depending on your grass thickness etc. it’s more work but I still enjoy using the mower. @@cleverusername1894 I ended up buying electric lawn mower, Toro to be specific.
It was at some point last summer and I went electric because gas powered Toros were unavailable in the models that interested me. My last gas Toro lasted 11 or 12 years repair free, I bet my electric Toro battery will not last 11-12 years and I will have to buy a new one at some point wiping out all the gas savings and then some. Dont blindly believe that anything electric will save you money over gas powered in long run. It will not.

Actually, I have a new EGO mower, and my back yard is a jungle. So far, I've had a branch pull the green plastic viewing port off of the battery cover, had a vine tie onto the height adjustment lever and change the deck height without my knowledge, and also had a handle extension locking clip pull loose. These events are in the first two weeks of using the mower. I've also noticed that the EGO has not just less but SIGNIFICANTLY less blade torque than my previous gas mower. With the gas mower, anything you could get under the deck was mulch - no stalling or stopping. The EGO has a tendency to overload, trip its breaker, and you have to back out and then restart the mower. I also noticed when I was shopping that the cheapest EGO mower has the SAME blade torque as they're most expensive. So although you get bigger batteries as you move up the EGO mower line, you do NOT get any more powerful blade motor.
Now having said all the above, I'm still pleased with my EGO mower (my first electric). After a winter with no mowing, I don't have to clean the carburetor, and the mower just starts. I also don't have to replace the engine air filter often in dusty conditions. And finally, I don't have to change the crank oil. So I wouldn't go back to gas despite the minor shortcomings of the EGO.
My last beef with the Ego is that the grass bag is HUGE. I'm 6-foot two with good upper body strength and it's a challenge for me to empty that huge, heavy grass bag. So much so that I don't plan to bag anymore - just mulch. My two cents.

Besides the maintenance free aspects of EGO and no gasoline fumes, I love how much more quiet it is compared to gasoline mowers.

I've been using the same gas powered B&S 20" cut push mower to do my trim work for the last 22 years, but then I enjoy doing the maintenance work on a mower. I bought a battery powered mower (Poulan Pro 58 volt) 2 seasons ago and while I have no complaints at all about it's power or run time the main complaint I have is that it simply won't get into areas I can get the smaller framed old gas push mower into for doing my trimming. I don't use weed eaters and do all my trimming with the push mower. Looking at that ego it's frame looks comparable in size to the Poulan I have which is just too big. The wheels are way in front of and behind the blades instead of being parallel with the front and back sweep of the blade on a small gas push mower so I guess I'll be sticking with a gas push mower for the foreseeable future. After 22 years my old Briggs still runs fine but the deck is shot, the holes for the wheels are wallowed out, etc. The rest of the lawn I mow with a riding mower as it's about 1.5 acres and that mower is 12 years old and still going strong. If I had a small city lawn with little to trim around besides the house and a couple of trees I think that ego would be just fine though.

I liked your review... covered most everything... I to was tired of taking the gas mower in each year for carb fix, despite running it out at the end of the season with conditioner. I purchased the "newer" model last spring and it has performed well. I have a side lot and it will cut all in one charge, unless, it is wet and long. I recommend it.
I only mulch... go to a golf course... pristine. 1000's of acres, probably better than your lawn.. they don't bag, but mulch (cept for the greens)... mulch returns food for the lawn. I use the #4 setting, contrary to the video.. grass likes to shade itself, healthier... but then requires slightly more often cutting.
    But here's the rub.
I had an issue that the self propelled portion "seemed" to stop working. I took out the battery... replaced, no change.. charged no change... I finished cutting by pushing, not an issue.
I called the service center...after about an hour of tries, used the call back feature, i talked to a "service person". His first question was do you want to receive promotional information?... I want my mower fixed... NO.
"Would you like to take a short survey and extent the battery warranty"?... no, but ok... And I did.
Once again I described the problem.
He the then had to check for Service and went away for 5 minutes.
"We have no service center near you"... Huh? I live in the Detroit area, home of many battery powered vehicles.
His solution: "We will send you a new mower". Hard to argue about that! Still WTF? [he did not ask the right question or...solution woulda been found]
I had registered my warranty... what if I had not?
The "old" mower still works... and maybe I have found the problem...
I purchased it based on Consumer Reports rating... they were correct.
So... recommend purchase, check for local service, register machine, and battery warranty.
Received new mower today. Still in Box

I have an Ego 21" self propelled. This will be the 3rd season using it, if I keep it . I really like not having to get gas, oil, plugs, air filters, belts. But it just doesn't have the power, or maybe RPMs of gas powered. The wheels push down the grass , and the mower doesn't have the force or suction to pull the grass.back up and cut it. So on your next pass , you see all this grass that didn't get cut. I'm not willing to spend over 500.00 again on a newer model to see if they cut any better. So right now , I'm trying to decide which gas mower to buy.
