The volumes in salad dressing bottles plus the cost are going up drastically. Look at the ingredient lists on your favorite bottled salad dressing and salad dressing seasoning mixes. Then compare them to the ingredient lists of the recipies you find. I'm finding that the newer the recipies for both salad dressings and salads (potato, carrot, coleslaw, and the more) use a taste delectable number of ingredients but also an increasing number of expensive ingredients. I can assure you that the home cooks of the 1960's were not using upper-end chef and upper end restaurant recipies for the most part. The medium and lower priced dressings in the grocery store dint either. And, you can be assured that the regular grocery store, deli case salads aren't using top-end ingredients in quantity either; they may not be using the cheapest of ingredients, but they aren't using the most expensive either. Of course, you can perk the flavors with 0lemtynof the best ingredients but, you can get very nice and edible food with lesser ingredients.

A few years ago, I did an "international hot dog bar". I arranged French toppings, Mexican toppings, German toppings, and of course, good old all American toppings. Everyone fixed their own dog and sides, It was very successful! I've also done a baked potato bar for my son's wedding with different toppings like stroganoff, shrimp etouffee, etc.

Thanks for including us in your family barbeque! You have a lovely family! I am sure they are always eager to try your delicious recipes. Everything looked delicious and the salads looked super fresh! Pulled pork shoulder / butt is a great, frugal meat. I have gotten pork shoulder as cheap as 99 cents a pound. You can cook it in the crockpot or smoker (using a smoker is my recommendation, because it gives it a nice bark). Homemade coleslaw, baked beans, potato salad, 3 bean salad, and watermelon are great sides. Serve with some sun tea or water with lemon slices. You will never see me serving soda, because we just don't drink it, and usually anyone that prefers Coke, Dr. Pepper, etc. usually supplies their own. I think in addition to preparing the menu, it is also important to prepare your home for guests coming over - make sure you have a clean bathroom, your sitting area and table are clean and inviting. Maybe even have a game or two on hand for guests to play! Oh, and my last suggestion is to have a day off after your party is scheduled - for instance, schedule the party on a Saturday and have Sunday to clean up the house before starting your work week.

During the summer, when we have the family over for a bbq, my husband will bbq a few Tri-Tip steaks or a brisket. I make homemade ice cream. I have 4 children, three girls and a boy. One brings an appetizer. Another brings the drinks, and the other two kids bring sides. Where we live, it gets really hot, like 115 hot. We have a pool and swim. Play a game of volleyball and enjoy wonderful food with amazing company.

We used to have a Krispy Kreme in Milford, CT. I miss them. Now I have to go to Mohegan Sun if I want one. I used to have a big 4th of July picnic every year. I used to stock up on ribs, Hummels hot dogs, and hamburgers when they went on sale. I used to make my grandmother's Italian potato salad, garden salad and buffalo wings. Everyone else would bring traditional potato salad, pasta salad, etc. I would get watermelon for dessert if it was on sale. People would bring desserts.

We make a dump cake kind of like that trifle. We layer the cake, then pudding, whipped cream, crushed butterfingers or oreos, then layer again. It's our son's favorite dessert.
Ya'll know how to have a party ❤ You have a lovely family!
We all chip in when we have a family meal. We usually provide the meat and our kids bring sides. Sometimes our son our SIL will smoke the meat for the meal. My DIL makes the best cinnamon rolls and our daughter is the dessert queen. We love to do brunch in the winter because we all love bfast foods. Unfortunately, we don't have brothers, sisters, cousins but we do have four kids, spouses and two grands and we love to gather together.

That antipasto pasta salad looks delicious, easy and versatile. The last pasta salad we got from the deli was fairly good, but a lot of mayo and tart for my taste and expensive. Much healthier to make from scratch. The corn salad looks great too. The trifle looks delicious too and I was thinking that some canned cherry pie filling would be good layered in there too. This isn't strictly frugal, though we grow the produce, cook from scratch, and barter for some ingredients. We are planning a Red Salmon BBQ around the 18th of June. An adventurous cousin is going to Alaska to fish the first salmon run and will fly it back to St. Louis. This is his thing--epic fishing vacations! This is an annual family reunion for over 60 people, that we will host in this year. We'll have bison burgers, pulled pork, hot dogs, and lots of vegetarian options, too. I am eagerly looking forward to grilling the salmon over a campfire. Some of the family will get here early and we'll make quinoa salad, macaroni salad, potato salad, bean salad, last year's canned green beans, corn on the cob, collard greens, spinach, cornbread, tortillas, and whatever desserts they bring bring. Home brewed beer and wine, iced tea, lemonade, real ginger beer, and whatever family prefers to bring. I would dearly love some Krispy Kreme glazed donuts. I believe they have Alaska franchises. Wouldn't that be nice! I'll start hinting...

My favorite salad/dip for cook outs is a corn and black bean salsa/salad hybrid. It's frozen or fresh corn, chopped cherry tomatoes, a can of rotel tomatoes, cilantro, black beans, lime juice and seasonings to taste. Can enjoy as a salad or dipped with tortilla chips. It's so delicious. But, I will say a garden fresh tomato sliced with a bit of salt and pepper is nothing to scoff at either. It's my favorite part of the summer garden. We also enjoy cucumber salads with either dill and sour cream or a light vinegar sort of dressing. The other day we did cucumbers, vinegar, onion, basil and cilantro to make a sort of Asian cucumber salad. The possibilities are endless in the summer time. As for other cookout sides we tend to make, homemade baked beans, smoked pork butt or smoked brisket or sausage, potato salad, cole slaw and some sort of watermelon or other seasonal fruit. Pasta salads are made on occasion as well.

Hi Emmy and Paul. Those salads look so good. Thanks for sharing some of your post holiday festivities with us. Glad you are feeling better. I especially appreciated the info on the basil. We are growing that for the first time this year and learned from your video. I can already see where maybe we made a mistake ... it was potted in a regular clay pot instead of the bigger plastic buckets I saw your plant in. Hopefully, the smaller pot will still allow the plant to grow big. We have planted several new items this year so we are learning as we go. Enjoy your week.

Karen Schutte: No worries about growing basil in a clay pot. We did that the first time we planted basil and I harvested quite a bit from it,then I let it air dry out on t-towels,the ones alot of people dry dishes with because they are lint free, after it is dry,it can easily be crumbled up and kept in a spice container, small plastic containers,or zip loc bags,I use my home grown dried in my homemade pasta sauce, also if you have an over abundance of leave say like 2 cups worth a person can make basil pesto in a blender or food processor streaming in a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil! I love fresh and dried home grown basil,it is the best in flavor! May you have success!

We often offer to take the wilting veggie and fruit trays, salads, and the like which others are tossing at events. I spike the wilting veggies with a soak (or not), often cut or chop the veggied into smaller pieces, then turn them into a crockpot to make s soup or stew. For us, this often means adding some diced onion, maybe some minced garlic, spices and herbs, maybe some Bullion type flavoring in the least amount of water possible so concentrated, and maybe some meat with bones. - All of the veggies will produce quite a quantity of fluid.
My favorite use for pico de galeo and salsas is to pour them over either chicken breasts or very lean pork in a crockpot thennlet them cook on slow or low. As needed, ill add a kissmof tomato sauce or tomato based juice. Slivered cabbage (full rounds or half rounds, no need to cross cut) and a small amount of shredded carrot sweeten things up with no need to add sugar.
I have taken upto quantities of cole slaw and carrot salad and rinsed the dressing off them. Then I turn the cabbage into a crockpot soup or stew. I generally make carrot bread out of the carrot shreds. If I feel comfortable about the carrot salad dressing, I drain the excess fluid out of it and use it as is in the carrotmbread; all the more somif it contains pineapple and/ or rains.
Fruit salad often gets some items picked out. The fruit can be used in a cobbler type, cooked dish. It can also be minced and used to create fruit bread. We have cut it into smaller pieces then used it to make a moist, bread pudding too.

Also, have you thought about making your own Riccota cheese??
I do and what a taste difference.all you need is whole milk, half and half and white vinegar.
Homemade is the best. You can always freeze the milks, defrost and whip up your cheese.
My container garden is thriving. I’ve got one jalapeño pepper and several tomatoes coming up. I’m so excited. Thank you both for all your support and encouragement. I love you both. I look forward to all your videos. You make a difference in my life. Thank you🌻

Such a delightful comment! Thank you! I had a bread machine but didn't care for it honestly. Gave it to a friend!

I always make my own salads. Potato salad, coleslaw, Greek salad, tabbouleh salad, garbanzo bean salad, etc. I prefer the salads more than the meats.

How have we always made summer BBQ's less expensive? Plenty of fresh, in season veggies and fruit with minimal dressings, sauces, and toppings. When fresh has seemed a little expensive or more work than time, no one admits it but flash frozen produce ends up on the table too. That extra chewing and fiber extends a sit-down meal but not too long, lives without refrigeration better than mayo or sour cream dishes, and satisfies.

Lovely family . When meat was cheaper I usually served up cold roast meat like lamb, beef or chicken . My favourite salad is potato salad but European style ( Polish background) made with mayo, eggs, potato and peas . Another one is cucumber salad made with a sour cream dressing . A cheap one is pasta, mayo and cut up celery . With prices the way they are here now in Australia I think it will be just barbecue chickens . Lettuce was $9.00 aud in a supermarket and capsicum no better . Major reviews will be needed . Thankfully canned beetroot and dill pickles are ok . Keep the gardening and dishes coming . You both are an inspiration .

We always made a big pan of baked beans using a name brand or a store brand of beans and added ketchup, dry mustard, Ken's country French salad dressing and honey. We refrigerated it over night and then baked it for a few minutes before the meal. That along with some red potato salad and chicken made for a very filling and delicious meal!

In a recent video you mentioned buying a different brand of pasta if on sale (instead of your loyal brand that has gotten more expensive). I thought of you when at my local Kroger this week! They had $2 bags of pasta on clearance for 50 cents....you bet I stocked up!!

I'm vegetarian, too, so I grill/barbeque vegetarian burgers, sausages and hot dogs. I'm likely to serve potato salad or macaroni salad. I'm likely to slice up a platter of fruit, with a dollop of vanilla yogurt on top of each piece. For dessert, I'll think of something simple and creamy, like use cream or frozen yogurt.

I can’t remember the last time I bought salads. Not only are they expensive, but they don’t taste good lol. When my son got married they wanted a bbq for their rehearsal dinner. We rented a beautiful room at a local brewery and my Dh grilled burgers, brats, and hotdogs. Dil wanted me to buy salads but I said gosh no, I will make them. I did buy desserts because I had no desire to do everything from scratch for 75 people, but salads I could do. I don’t know that we saved any money by doing a bbq vs a sit down dinner, but it’s what they wanted, so it’s what we did. I know one thing-it was a lot more work for us, but everyone had a great time, and it was the perfect start to their weekend.
