- Hey guys, hope your holidays have been going better than mine! 😂 This is a Scandinavian game I played on my Twitch stream on Dec. 26, 2023. It features a main line of the 3...Qa5 variation that I'll be discussing in my course, 4.d4 Nf6 5.Nf3 Bf5 6.Bc4 e6 7.Bd2 Bb4. My opponent tries a savvy move order with 10.Qe2 and an e-file pin facilitating11.d5, but Black can neutralize this idea with a counter-pin!

Yes, it's true, it just happened to me! The unjust ?! dubious evaluation appears next to the ...d5 move! Apparently Lichess is as annoyed by this opening as e4 players!!

I've been studying the Qa5 Scandi lines pretty intensely recently. Have played it for a couple of years now but finding out I wasn't playing it as well as I could...good enough to get by against weaker players (I'm around 1700-1800 on lichess) but having lots of trouble against higher rated players. Hoping you''ll be posting more Scandi games especially those where black plays Bd2 fairly early. I still get messed up by move orders at times.

Opponent offers a draw on move 9, resigns after move 15. Declining the draw offer was a good decision, but your opening move was an inaccuracy. Happy holidays John!

This was very instructive. Scandi players should offer a draw after move one, because the first move is an inaccuracy :)

John! I catch your streams when I can, but when I miss them I usually check out the vods. It's always entertaining to watch you late join a bullet arena and go for gold by berserking, or just generally interacting with people live----you're great at it! A little late to reply, but thanks a lot for your feedback. I gotta admit, I *love* berserking and trying to play "catch up" in the arenas as well 😀 A bad habit, but sooo much fun.
I'll keep that in mind about the clips and VODs on CZcams. I might be able to get around to implementing that in the first half of this year.

Lol my favorite arena streamer loves the Scandi! He plays it almost exclusively against e4 but you would still probably crush him! You know what I think at least half the time I've played Ng5 it's a blunder, as was the case here.

Your ...Qd8 Scandi was my "first love" as far as Black openings go. It was with that repertoire that I felt 100% at ease with the black pieces against 1.e4. I've since switched to the Pirc-KID complex to complement my KIA... but the Bartholomew Scandi is a rock you can rely on when things feel shaky.

John, have you spoken about the big picture differences between the Scandi and the Modern Scandi? Is there an article or a link you can share? I’ve started playing the Modern Scandi, and I’m enjoying it, but I don’t want to sink too much time into something that’s fundamentally unviable. I mean, I never see any of the top players play it, and they play some wild stuff 🤣🤷🏻♂️🙏 is there something intrinsically problematic with 2.Nf6? The engine doesn’t think so, but human experts seem to shy away from it…

3. Bb5+ is The theoretical discussion and you can look that up. But the main issue is that after 3. d4 Nxd5 white will be able to get c2-c4 easily and you are playing a Caro pawn structure. One of the main perks of the Scandi is that the knight on c3 blocks the c pawn which is instrumental in White's play in the resulting structure. If you allow white to develop with c4 and then Nc3 then you are just playing a bad Caro-Kann. Not necessarily bad for us patzer but certainly bad for master players
I discuss the differences a bit in my upcoming course. To be brief, I'll say that for most players, both 2...Qxd5 and 2...Nf6 are completely playable, and if you're enjoying it and having good results, you're fine! That out of the way, I'm not as big a fan of 2...Nf6 for a couple reasons. First, White players usually just avoid the fun gambit lines like the Icelandic/Portuguese. Then, you're often playing a position that feels more akin to an Alekhine's Defense than a Scandinavian, with White sometimes getting in c2-c4 (as odysseas573 points out), which can be annoying. Second, I do think it's theoretically a little sketchier than 2...Qxd5 if White *does* go into some of those gambit lines with engine prep. I don't have an article/video I can share on the topic, but maybe I'll make one some time!
Sorry to hear you got Covid, but at least it doesn't sound like it was too severe. Sucks that you couldn't be physically present with family on Christmas, though. Hope you have a happy holiday season nonetheless!
