@@nikkihayes5411 to give you some idea of what is going on in a rugby union scrum, A good international level pack of 8 forwards should get aroung 3,500 pounds of force. of course the opponents are trying to match this, so yes they are pushing against one another quite a lot, but also there is a lot more going on, the 3 players in the front row are also trying to twist and destabilise their opponents within certain rules

I’m English but I’ve enjoyed the Scottish resurgence in recent years. Finn is just great to watch, and it’s nice to have good sporting competition between us again - given the games I grew up watching (England battering Scotland 😉)

  • @Badgersj

One reason for the ban on forward passing is to make the game more fluid, American football looks very static to us - the forward pass seems to end play. A couple of things I don't remember hearing here - the ball carrier is the ONLY person who can be tackled, players aren't even allowed to block the ball carrier's team mates (though it's OK to intercept of course). Also, when a try (touchdown) is scored, the place where it is actually placed on the ground is important as the subsequent conversion will take place directly opposite. So if the ball carrier manages to touch down between the posts that makes it easier for the kicker, if the ball is touched down on the wings (more common) it's more difficult. That's why you will sometimes see the ball carrier not touch down immediately, and tackles taking place after the try line is crossed. If the "defence" (that's not a specialised team, merely the team that does not have possession of the ball at that moment) manages to hold the ball carrier up and stop him/her from placing the ball on the ground - the try has not been scored - very entertaining to watch, as is physically picking the ball carrier up and throwing him/her into touch.

Also if your intrested in a full rugby union game than the biggest rivalry in rugby is south-africa vs new-zealand so if you can find any full match of these 2 teams playing against each other that always makes for a good game

One thing not mentioned is that there are no seperate offence and defence teams.
The same players stay on the field throughout the game unless they are seriously injured, dead or they want to give a substitute player some play time.
One always gets bruised, cut or chunks taken out of them, sometimes slightly concussed, but the injury has to be pretty bad for someone to leave the field.
I played at school and the teacher had to order me off the field because my eye was completely closed and swollen after taking a knee to the face.
Nobody wants to leave the field.
Come home from school and mum is horrified, but dad just says "had a good game then"?
And a fun day was had by all.

7:15 There was a tweak to how many points a field goal is worth in the National Rugby League, Australia/New Zealand's domestic competition, back in 2021 to reward players kicking. It's still worth a single point if the kicker has kicked it from inside 40 metres/44 yards of the goal but it's now worth 2 points if it's kicked from farther out then 40 metres because it's harder to kick.

Rugby is basic trench warfare. Any player must pass the ball backwards so each inch of the ground must be gained by someone carrying the ball.
If a kick is made; it is in opposition territory and any fellow player must come from behind the kicker.
    That’s the basics.

1- Forward pass in rugby is like "what are you doing mate?" (you can move the ball forward only by running or kicking it)
2- A ruck is very much comparable to a snap in NFL but without commercial advertisement and team switching after the tackle. Directly after the tackle, on the fly, set plays can happen here. (League not using the Ruck and probably a reason why Union is more popular, the Ruck is a very technical and vital aspect to the pace of the game) Looks messy and chaotic but is in fact the opposite (technically, again)
3- You can tackle only the ball carrier. No blockers, remember ("what are you doing mate?")...
These are the main differences between Rugby and USA Football. Fundamentals changes that make the two sports very different, so it's not "like football but without pads" it's Rugby.
I can enjoy both and will not trash NFL cause it's a very thought sport still, but I could bet a testicle that a NFL fan can become crazy about Rugby, when a Rugby fan won't about NFL despite respecting it.
    Vive la France.
Your hair is gorgeous. At last an afro rooted woman who doesn't wear stupid wigs.
any way better start by learning a bit of the rules, than by watching "most brutal hits and tackles in rugby" like the usual.
Next step would be match highlights better than entire matches. You can do reaction videos and appreciate what you learnt here. Rugby Union of course.

Harvard university and Mcgill university were the first schools to play rugby in America in14 May 1874. Rugby was very popular in the early 1900s. Oddly, this was because American football at the time was deemed too violent and by 1905 American football was in crises. At the 19020 summer Olympics in Antwerp an American team beat France to win the first ever gold medal. They then beat France again at the Paris Olympics in France. So, America actually has to Olympic Gold medals for rugby and by memory I think that they may be the only country to hold this record as the only country to win a medal for a full-size rugby team. I say that because there is a 7 aside version that has 2 7-minute halves that has been played in the Olympics since 2016. Bothe the American men's and women's teams do well in 7s and have taken some big scalps. Rugby history in America is on CZcams as well as the 7s games. The American teams are known as the USA Eagles. Rugby has had a growth spurt in the last few years and recently signed a deal with Fox sports. Rugby League was played in Las Vegas about 2 months ago, which is also on CZcams

I'm English, in my 70s, and a lifelong Rugby Union devotee. In the last 5 or 6 years, I have really embraced women's rugby union and love it. It's very competitive and skilful, but also played with the right sporting attitude, which has always been a big part of rugby union.
The biggest games in Women's Rugby Union are England (Red Roses) versus New Zealand (Black Ferns), or either of those versus France. Just this😮 week, Canada have overtaken New Zealand in the world rankings with their first ever victory over them. So currently, the top women's teams are 1) England, 2) Canada, 3) New Zealand, 4) France, 5) Australia, 6) Scotland, 7) USA.
I would definitely recommend you checking out Women's rugby union.

Hi, you said back in medieval times of football it looked like they are tearing each other apart,, well in the UK there is still such a game, it is called Royal Shrovetide Football, originally played with a head from an execution it is now played with a ball. there is really only one rule, you are not allowed to kill anyone. There are two teams (with no limit to the amount of players) the goals are 3 miles apart and they will play up hills and even across rivers and i think it is over two days. The local shops board up their windows for the event. At the end when the hooter sounds if the score it tied then the team that has possession of the ball wins, so they will defend the ball at all costs, Here is a link to a video of a game, czcams.com/video/OhKcw27Hf7I/video.html We have lots of silly games over here, Cheese rolling competition, bog snorkelling and shin kicking to name just a few lol.

One thing i think the otherwise very good video missed, is that unlike American and Canadian Football, you can not block the opposition in either Rugby. Thats called obstruction, and is a penalty.
The schism of Rugby along class based lines is core to each sports lore and identity. Both very rich, yet i believe a net negative which has hindered the growth or appeal of the 2 sports.
Its said that Rugby Union is Chess, Rugby League is Checkers.
Rugby League is certainly a streamlined sport, which to Union fans is a bit too bash and crash monotonous.
Rugby Union has a wider variety of body shapes playing. It is certainly the more complex game. Sone love it for that, while many other find its amount of rules frankly byzantine. Rugby Union's complexity has been causing issue were there is debate about amateur era laws not keeping up in the bigger faster professional era. Many love the technical game of the forward packs, while Union loses many other viewers to League because of the constant delays, scrum resets, extended advantages, penalty shootouts etc

Union is much faster as its continuous and is only 80 minutes duration overtime play can occur if one side keeps the ball in play after the hooter with the game ending when the ball goes out of play.
