Hi just to clarify a few cricket terms:
1. Spin has to do with rotations on the ball caused by the bowlers wrist/fingers. When the ball lands it grips the surface and turns. (often requires that the bowler keep it under 55mph)
2. Swing is the movement of the ball in the air caused by maintaining the different sides of the ball correctly. (the Fielding team will polish one side of the ball so that bowlers who can keep the seam straight in delivery can get the polished side to travel quicker through the air than the rough side... There are some changes to bowling action as well but that's the basic idea)
3. Seam is when a bowler can get the ball to land on the seam of the ball (this seam is approx. 1/8 inch taller than the rest of the ball). This will cause movement upon landing.
Some bowlers can use swing to get the ball to move one way and the seam to get it to move back - often catching a batsman by surprise.

Agree withn all that, but there are acouple of other dimensions. The new ball swings away from the shiny side but as the ball wears it may begin to swing the other way. Both swings can be early or late - obviously late swing is harder for the batsmen to recignise and that is why they either don't play or they play down the wrong line. Reverse swing is often later and often swings further. Wasim Akram was famous for it; I think he bowled the sixth bal - a left arm late reverse swing. - that wasn;t the only wicket he took like that. Right handed batsmen sometimes open their stance so they don't have move their head while the ball is bowled. Swing bowling and movement off the pitch (sometimes called a cutter) vary with weather conditions. Essex have a ground next to the sea and the state of the tide has a great effect on the ball. Visting capains need their tide tables ! The better swing bowlers are bowling at about 83-87 mph with the odd one a bit faster, whereas pure fast bowlers are hitting low90s whn fresh. he television someiimes makes it difficult to tell whether ball has swung late or moved off the pitch. The first bolwer, jimmy Anderson is very skilful and has the variations - the frist ball in this video swung in and cut away! He cand do it the other way around to. Bowlers can bowl over the wicket or around which changes the line for the batsman OVer the wicket means that the bowler bowls with the wicket next to his bowling arm, Round the wicket means the ball has to be directed from a different direction with the bowler's arm on the outside (if you like) Bowlers can also choose to bowl from close to the stumps of from the edge of the crease - more variables for the batsmen. Finally, wickets often come because the bowler has bowled a series of balls which lure the batsman into overconfidence. eg three good length balls outside the offstump moving away slightly followed by a slightly quicker fuller length brt=utal inswinger will decive the batsman into playingan aggressive shot and missing ! Some bowlers get a lot of swing, but sometimes the harder one to hit is the one that swings a little bit very late. The other thing is that with the seam upright, you will get some swing initially through the air, but then the ball can deviate further or go back the other way off the ground. The best ball can be one that deviates half the width of the bat as you are hitting for the middle of the bat.
I had the opportunity of playing internationally for Namibia. I was a left handed opening sewing bowler. Could swing the ball at least 2 to 3 meters in the air. The trick was to make sure 1 side of the ball was always shinny as it would allow the ball to swing. If the shine was on the inside the ball would swing into the batsman and if on the outside would swing away from the Batsmen. If you held the ball across the seam of th ball it would rise sharply into the batsman head high
You also need to point the seam in the right direction and cock or push in your wrist. Jimmy does a great masterclass on this. I used to bowl away swing as a teenager but lost that after my first disc problem at 19. I had to remodel my action after that and became an inswing bowler if i wanted wether reverse or normal and a lot had to do with arm height or wrist position. I was mid 80s to, my problem was i was 5’8” and skiddy.
That depends a bit on the ball that you're using. It requires a slightly different technique to swing a Kookaburra vs a Duke's ball.
Mitchell Starc was the last bowler, from Australia, he was also 2 and 4. He has an amazing yorker (bowled basically at the toes of the batsman) and that give the ball the most time to swing. He's also bowling 90+ mph. The problem with Mitch is he's sometimes a bit wayward, but when he's on song, he's unstoppable. One and three was Jimmy Anderson from England, another fantastic bowler, although not nearly as quick, but very accurate. He's also nearly 42 years old and has nearly 700 test wickets, for a fast bowler that's unheard of, for any bowler really. A freak of nature.
Jimmy is poised to become the second highest wicket taker ever and has second most Test caps. Absolutely ridiculous for a seam bowler. Most have a 10-12 year career. He has been playing Tests longer than some of his teammates have been alive.
@@colinmorrison5119 TBH, I don't know how he is still playing. I'm not just talking physically, but also mentally. Many players would have just had enough by this stage, for Jimmy to keep on fronting up with an aging body and still being able to maintain the right attitude and concentration is nothing shorter than commendable.
Jimmy the greatest fast bowler, bar none. No other fast bowler has had that much success, been that consistent, over that period of time. Its a shame Stuart Broad retired because with those 2 together, there was a constant feeling that something was about to happen.

That is why the ball is only changed after 90 overs. The ball softening after prolonged used and been shined on one side by the bowler causes it to swing like that.
Also a smart bowler knows how to use the cracks on the ground.

To answer your question regarding the different hands release,
For some context I’m a right handed pace bowler who grew up bowling leggies. I have played some good level cricket in Australia through school and on a club and representative level. Toured India playing for 2 weeks when I was 15, I’ve played a lot of and love the game.
To put it simply yes it does make a difference for the batsmen but it goes both ways, some bowlers prefer bowling to different handed batsmen as well.
Most bowlers will alter the angle of their run up when bowling to Left v Right batsmen. They also may change bowling ‘Over’ or ‘Around’ the wicket. This refers to the bowlers bowling arm and it’s relation to the stumps as they bowl the ball.
If they are a left handed bowler and coming in past the right hand side of the stumps they would be bowling left arm over as the bowling arm passes ‘over’ the stumps as you bowl. If they came from the other side of the stumps it would be left arm around as the non bowling arm is closest to the stumps and the bowling arm is coming around the stumps.
There’s also ‘going through the gate’ and that refers to passing between the umpire and the stumps during your run up. Spinners use this more frequently but isn’t often seen unless maybe in the case of a mismatched bowler and batsmen hand combo.
Essentially cricket is is a game of angles and trajectory for everyone involved. Slight alterations in the angle of the ball Delivered/Received depending how you want to look at it essentially just produces an individuality of every ball bowled. Similar to baseball with switch hitters, some in cricket but not alot. They are changing their stance to favour their own reception of the ball. Similar case here.

Bit of a weird video this one supplied as several of those outs didn't swing at all - swing is all about in the air movement but if it hits the pitch and moves off it it's technically a seam delivery (the ball pitches on the stitching on the ball i.e the seam and alters trajectory off that).
There's a basic phrase for all bowlers - aim for the top of off stump which is considered the best way to do - which you saw several times here and imagine the skill level involved needed to be able to do this on the regular especially when you're bowling at speeds of 120-145Kph and then imagine being a batter when this happens.

Swing deliveries are the ones which moves in the air before pitching on the pitch, if the ball pitches and bounce with different movement than it is called seam bowling bcz it is mainly due to seam ( stitches on the leather of the ball ) it depends on the position of the seam or stitches on the ball when it hit the ground.
but swing is used for seam too technically both are swing

The one at 10:45 I remember well. Mitchell Starc (Aus) , left-arm fast, 90+mph at James Vince (Eng) as he was closing on his first Test match century. If you want to see an unplayable delivery that was as good as any.
Most swing bowling dismissals are more subtle. A cricket bat is 4.25 inches wide, so if you can get the ball to deviate by 2 - 2.5 inches laterally, late in the trajectory, you have a chance to get an edge to the keeper or slip catchers, beat the bat to hit the stumps, or get an LBW decision. On days when it swings a lot more it can be difficult for some swing bowlers to control it, as they have to keep adjusting the starting point in the line of trajectory to be in the right place when it reaches the batsman. As a former wicket-keeper, I have seen bowlers struggling a lot of times.
To answer your question : Your stance matters in terms of playing offside or leg side. Technically perfect would be a neutral stance and then having enough fitness to rock on the back foot and go on front based on where it pitches. Where most batsman struggle even the elite one's is if there is late swing as they more then likely have committed already in the fraction of a second they have to react. There is a lot that goes into cricket. Your stance has to be wide enough to counter expected bounce. Your head is the heaviest part of the body. Your legs follow where your head goes. Once you have a set neutral base/stance batsman make minor adjustments based on left or right hand bowlers. This could be the way you grip the bat, the way you take guard based on stump. It also depends on how the pitch is playing the bounce and how much it is swinging. Also the last one hit a crack on the pitch and then went the other way. In test match pitch crumbles towards the end because it is played over 5 days. Bowlers sometimes make use of pitching on the crack. The ball can move in the air, off the seam and off the pitch. Once in the right position, it is only then that relevance to hitting the ball applies, to stroke the ball into a gap in the field. The emphasis is to focus on what is required to execute proper movement to a moving ball. Therefore, the essential role of the stance is to be poised and ready to move athletically.
To move athletically, you must use your feet. To get the best out of your feet, the weight must be on the ball of each foot, for that is where the energy, the springy muscle, is, not the arch or the heel. Often the toes are referred to, yet it is in fact the ball of the foot, the round, sinewy area at the base of the big toe, that is the most vital part of the body when it comes to batting.
As you stand awaiting the bowler's delivery, the balls of the feet are priority, poised, ready to move quickly and efficiently.
So, If u r not fit enough u can't switch b/w frontfoot and backfoot fast enough to counter bowlers who bowl fast and swing...Take Shahzad from Afg as an example he is a chubby guy and always play from within the crease and whenever ball does something he is caught in the crease and get out...If he can get fit he can easily counter that with his feet movements..I can give u example of Paul Sterling too watch how he plays and u will get ur ans.

to your question: its all a part of strategy of where to bowl from, from how wide they want to bow. but there is a limit to how wide you can be when you deliver the ball.. left handed are certainly rare and are generally difficult to face comparatively. but that also depends on batsman. there are lot of variables in cricket.

When the Aussies beat us 5-0 in Australia he was ferocious, I shat myself just watching, the bowling spells he had throughout that series were apocalyptic!!
Look for Bob Willis taking 8 wickets for 43 runs off Australia who only needed 83 to win the match. Possibly the most awesome bowling, I was lucky enough to watch it on television as it was happening. He did not swing the ball but relied on movement caused by the seem of the ball hitting the wicket, and hand positioning as the ball was released.

In answer to your question, yes it makes a massive difference which arm and which side of the wicket a bowler bowls from (a bowler no matter left or right handed can bowl from either side of the non defended stumps at any time but the umpire must be told and the batsman made aware of the change).
A right handed bowler coming around the wicket (to the right) to a right handed batter is primarily only for 2 reasons. There is a stacked leg side field and a plan to get him out trying to hit that way....or a faster bowler has decided to try and intimidate and physically injure by bowling from the angle straight at his body.
Remember unlike Baseball pitchers..., Cricket bowlers are allowed to attack the body.
"If you can't get him out, knock him out"..
In the air: swing, off the pitch (turf) seam. If the ball swings in to batsman it is an inswinger, if it moves away from him it is an outswinger. Swing is created by carefully keeping the shine on one side of the ball while allowing other side to buff. This created an aerodynamic effect pushing the ball sideways towards the rough side while in the air. For this to happen bowlers has to be very precise with ball release keeping the seam upright (perpendicular to the pitch surface) but angling the ball slightly towards the rough side (toward the side he wants it to swing). To make the matters even more complicated, when the ball gets old it will start to 'reverse swing', but for this to happen you have to ball around 140km (90m)/h. It wasn't a test match, but I'd rather be a County side taking that beating than an International Test side taking a 400 beating. Mike Atherton said it was like "Death by 1000 cuts" in that Test match. He made captains look silly because he could put the ball wherever he wanted no matter what field you set.
The ball moves in the air with swing bowling. Part of the art of any bowling is using the width of pitch to help to change the angle. The lines down either side limit angle that can be achieved. I used to bowl out swing and I used to get as close to the stumps as possible and with my slingy action it was like a left arm over the wicket bowler when I was bowling right arm over. As a batsman I hated right arm round and left arm over because angle is very different, you have to open the stance up . For left arm round and right arm over allowed to keep side on to the bowler and bring the bat down straight through the line of the ball. I would have been a lot more dangerous if I could move the ball both ways with the same arm action.
Jimmy Anderson is one of the best swing bowlers and he is only 82 to 86 mph but he can choose to move the ball in either direction with the same arm action making it hard to pick.
Re, batters facing left handed bowlers, the bowler can bowl from either side of the wicket.
The umpires must inform the batters what is happening and if the bowler will change sides.
Bowling "over the wicket" means your bowling arm is the one nearest the wicket, and bowling round the wicket is the opposite.
So you can bowl right arm over, right arm round, left arm over, or left arm round.
And yes, batters tend to change their stance to face different bowlers.
Batters place the bat upright, sideways, infeont of the wickets and ask the umpire to line up the bat with one of the stumps.
Most choose the middle stump.
The ump guides you to put the bat in the right place, and then the batter will scrape a line on the ground and take their stance on that line.
The leg stump is the wicket (those three sticks behind the batter) closest to the batters leg. So it swaps when a left handed batter takes guard.
Indeed, that whole side of the field is called the legside, or the onside, as the other side is known as the offside (and that wicket is known as the off stump).

As well as swinging (changing direction in the air) and cutting (changing after the bounce), which side of the wicket you bowl from can make a difference: if you bowl arm over the wicket, it tends to be a straighter ball in general, while bowling around the wicket means it’s coming in from wider out.
The toughest one to play is the In-Swinging ball aimed at the Toes, it is called a Yorker.

From a batsman's perspective, I played my cricket as a left handed batsman. Often batting with a right handed partner at the other end. This threw a lot of bowlers off, since many like to get into a rhythm bowling, say, right arm over the wicket ball after ball, varying speed, swing,, length. With right/left batters changing ends, the whole field and bowlers thinking is constantly changing. In terms of bowling I preferred lefties but rarely faced them (opp of right handed batsman).

Agree. It’s the one that goes late that is the problem for me. I’m a right hander and I HATE late in-swing. A full and straight late inswinger is my nemesis. A bowler who gets it swinging early is fine, as I can anticipate it unless it moves off the wicket. So I bat out of my crease to negate it. But if it’s moving late, I’m in trouble

Bob Massie's 16 wickets on debut versus England in England is the best example of swing bowling you'll ever see. He got 8 wickets in each innings with both inswingers and outswingers. What also helps swing bowlers is moisture or humidity in the air so England is a great place for swing bowlers whereas dry countries like Australia make it a little harder. Bob Massie failed to repeat his great performance in the Carribean because of the conditions.
Terry Alderman was also amazing at that slower speed. So much so that Graham Gooch once had his answering machine, "I'm out, probably LBW Alderman."
Ian Botham was a very fine swing bowler of a similar vintage. He complained about changes to the ball that caused them to swing much, much less.
Same for cricket, left hand fast bowlers (pitchers) are considered most dangerous. Provided that their line (the curve control) and length (control over where to bouce) is good.
Being a right or left hand bowler you can bowl from the left of the umpire or the right which changes the angle of release. In addition you can move a feet or two on each side to change the angle more. Which changes the point of release again. So there are many variations.

Lance was a medium pace bowler, but he could swing it ha;f the width of the pitch AND get turn off the bounce if the conditions were right. And, being medium pace, you can *see* it the whole way. It's mesmerising to watch it start from the quarterline of the pitch, bowled out to the edge, and then it just swings back into the centre of the stumps, hits the pitch and turns and 30-45 degrees behind the batsman.

The strain put on a fast bowlers body during a five day test match should not be underestimated. The fact that he is still going, and still one of the hardest bowlers to hit, is a testament to his fitness, skill and knowledge of the game.

In general,right arm bowlers look to swing the ball away from the right handed batters and use the one that swings in or moves in off the pitch as the surprise ball or variation. That could also be why some of the batters didn't play at some of the inswingers in this clip.

I much preferred facing a left handed bowler as a R/H batsman, I liked the hook and generally playing off my legs so it made it easier. R/H bowlers putting the ball between a nice cutting range and close to the stumps was my weak spot early, once I got my eye in I was alright, but those were dangerous balls for me.

The science is when the ball starts to lose its shine you try to keep one side of the ball shiny so the air resists the shiny side less causing the ball to swing. You also have to hold the ball correctly so the seam is facing across and not straight on and also to do an outswinger your body has to be side-on. To do an inswinger you bowl with your body more front on facing the batsman.
On number 4, 6, 9 and 10, right handed bowler to right handed batter from that angle, most common balls are expected to be moving away. These balls are known as reverse swing, much harder to bowl and face as a batter. Thats why both batters seem baffled, they expected the ball to move away but the ball came back in. Number 8 as well, lefty bowler is expected to move the ball away from lefty batter but the ball comes in
The last one (number 10) where it starts on your legs (right handed Batsman) and then moves away from you is known as "reverse swing". That is a very difficult art to achieve !
I have played cricket as a fast bowler with this seam/leather ball in my teens and as an adult, watching a new ball move in the air before it hits the ground, it just gives goosebumps. I would suggest you buy a new cricket ball from a good brand and sniff at the damn thing. Even today when I get a chance, the first thing I do is hold it at the seam, roll my fingers over, Chuck it in the air catch it again and smell it.
Number 1 and 4 were the great James Anderson, who has more test wickets than any other fast bowler. He made his debut for England in 2003. He is still playing now, and is still one of the top bowlers at the age of 41.
Some of these were more off of seam movement than actual swing, particularly number 11 and 12. It just goes to show that even cricket fans can get confused between seam movement and swing movement. Seam movement is when it deviates after hitting the pitch, while swing movement is when it moves through the air before hitting the pitch.
A bowler's action is also paramount to causing it to swing, it's why some are better at it than others. Wasim Akram (number 8) was arguably the best at it in the last 40-50 years, perhaps the best ever.
I don’t know if you guys have already seen him but there’s a guy called “Lasith Malinga” and you should definitely check his bowling out. If you need any incentive, he’s the only bowler in the history to take 4 wickets in 4 deliveries and he did it twice. 😁
It's easier to change bowlers (pitchers) in cricket. Each bowler bowls a set of 6 (called an 'over') - then play switches to the other end and a different bowler bowls his set of 6. At the end of any 'over', the captain can call on anyone in the team to bowl, so for the batsmen, the bowler they face up to can be constantly changing.
A bowler can bowl on both sides of the stumps. Left arm bowler over the wicket to a right hand batsman can be deadly because he can angle the ball across the right hand batsman's body and cause the ball to swing in late or swing out a little,both are dangerous balls.👍🏏
Interesting compilation, but a few were actually seam bowlers rather than swing bowlers. It's unexciting really, but I'm gonna tell you anyway ;) Seam bowlers are typically very tall and bounce the ball hard in to the ground using the angle of the seam of the ball to make it move after it bounces. Swing bowlers are usually shorter and while still have the seam at an angle, use the air more to make it wobble or swing in different directions. Swing also needs atmospheric conditions to works best, whereas seam needs a greener deck (not quite as dry). Non-humid dry air and a dry hard pitch are the complete enemy of any fast bowler. That's the best explanation I can come up with between the two - sorry....
It's also something worth trying to find if you can, but that overhead view does NOT do justice to how fast these guys are. When you view it side on, you really do get to appreciate how very little time, and how terrifying a fast bowler really is. For a moderate fast bowler it's about 1/2 second between the bowler releasing it, and it arriving at the bat. Add the swing or seam to the equation, and the guy at the other end has to earn their wages that day...

If you look closely at no 4 you will see the seam of the ball is directly vertical and doesn't change. This is what creates the swing in the air and the cut off the pitch when the hard seam hits the ground

Its generally hard for right handed batters vs left arm pacers. Especially the ball that comes back in. Most Right handed batters have a weakness against that.

Baseballls don’t have a seam. Angle that and also shine one side of the ball so it moves faster than the other. It’s physics, ball will swing... Plus bowlers action. And the patience game of swinging it one way for several overs just to frustrate the batsman. Getting in his head that it will swing away for example so they play outside the line. Then once you have them thinking it’s going one way. You swing it in and they are totally out of position and not expecting it. All mind games. I was a swing bowler myself when I was younger, had trials for Yorkshire but did t make the cut unfortunately. But I loved frustrating batsmen with out swingers, playing and missing. Then after a few overs when you see they are pissed off, change the position of seam, and shiny side of ball and go for an in swinging Yorker. Darren gough was the master at that.
If you want to watch sone of best spin bowling look at Shane warned best wickets. That’s totally different and requires rotation of the ball in the air so when it lands it’s spinning and will turn once it’s bounced.

So that last one wasn't actually swing, one of the other challenges batsmen sometimes face in test cricket is that by the 4th or 5th day cracks can start to open up on the pitch as it dries out and that ball hit a massive crack and perfectly straightened to hit the stumps. On the coverage they showed a projection of where the ball would have gone if it didn't hit the crack and it was missing leg stump by about a foot. A lot of luck involved from the bowler but as an Aussie I was cheering when it happened 😅 felt a bit bad for the batsman because he was on 70 I believe and batting well, just got a ball that was genuinely unplayable.
5:08 Yes it is confusing. Batsmen have to realign their guard and possibly their playstyle for left vs right handers. You need to learn a whole new rhythm for what is safe to leave and so on. And on top of that, the bowlers don't have to deliver from the same line. They can move tight into the stumps or wide from the stumps (there is a limit how wide but still a decent amount of variation occurs). They can also bowl over or around the wicket. A left hander going around the wicket (bowling on the left side of the stumps) has a far wider release point than a right hander bowling on the same side of the stumps. So you need to be mentally prepared for these changes in trajectory and not let it unsettle you.

Lot of cricket players leave the ball like that because they know its gonna be an outswinger. As it could touch the bat and result in catch out. But in his case it was a secret inswinger which came to his stumps

Test cricket goes for 5 days the pitch they play on can sometimes dry up and cracks will appear ,when the ball hits a crack it can do some weird shit,it might take off and take the batsmans head off or it might stay alot lower than the batsman thinks and then it could deviate a bit more left or right,,not much time to adjust your shot when its coming at you at 140 clicks an hour

Typically a right handed bowler with a side on action will bowl an outswinger - so away from the right handed batter and toward the slips. A more open chested action is more conducive to bowling the inswinger - toward the batter. Typically shine one side of the ball and let the other side get a bit rougher, and that will get the ball swinging more (try taping up one side of a tennis ball and see what happens.) Don't start me on "reverse swing" when the ball gets a bit older. That's a bit of magic that the fast bowling fraternity know about. The best bowlers can make the ball swing either way (and late).
Not only do you have the left and right arm but also any bowler can change and bowl over or around the wicket which will change the angles yet again, but they can't just change in run up has to be flagged before

First ball landed on a good length and line, went down the off side and out of reach, second ball landed on the same line and length and went down the leg side and again out of reach. For people who haven't watched a lot of cricket, it is hard to see the intricacies of bowling. Seeing that amount of movement in a delivery, before the bounce, is like seeing a 105 mph pitch or a ludricrous amount of speed and movement from a Spencer Strider slider. Most deliveries are straight on or have most of their movement come from the spin of the ball shooting off from the bounce. These guys who deliver it with swing or, even more wild, reverse-swing, are fucking magic.
how much the ball swings in the air is very much down to the weather, more likely to swing with cloud cover, same applies to movement of the ball off the pitch and moisture in the wicket
