Sovol SV04 IDEX 3D Printer Review: Independent Dual Extruder, Single, dual, copy, and mirror mode

- Welcome back to Aurora Tech Channel. Today, I will review the Sovol SV04 IDEX 3D Printer. This box is huge! IDEX stands for Independent Dual Extruder, which means that we can print 2 colors at the same time, and we can double the print speed by using duplicate mode to make both extruders work together and print 2 of the same models at the same time. I would like to thank Sovol for sending me this printer to review. I will go through the assembly real quick and do some test prints and see what else we can do on this IDEX printer.

You should let the personality that is seen in the blooper section come out more often elsewhere. You're clearly a cheery and sparkly individual in real life, so embrace that instead of the very serious and subdued persona from some mandatory fire safety training video. Your content is truly awesome btw! I'd love to see more software tutorials as well as tips and tricks on how to fine-tune and squeeze maximum quality and performance out of the most common printers.

WOW! Thank you for this video! This is the video I've been needing to finally get going with this printer. There wasn't many videos for this printer and the ones that were made were similar generic review videos. None went into depth like you did using the slicer and actually printing the models demonstrating each mode.

I've seen like 12 different videos both in spanish and english... and NONE of them manage to cover the amount of details of this short video even Including the thing of printing PTEG with PLA as supports, something that I had to look in other IDEX printer videos. Many thanks for this one. Coming from a CR-10V3 I wish to be able to buy this one, I have so many Firmware ideas in mind 🙂

Thanks for the dual material hack I will try that in future. I have a Tronxy X5SA-E2 but with 2 nozzles instead of the usual 1 so it should work.

Awesome review and video on setting up the printer. I bought the printer, and I'm working to set it up. Your video explains things better than the manual. Something I noticed you didn't cover is the adjusting of the x axis, as mentioned in the manual. The manual does mention a video from the manufacturer on how to deal with this part, so I'll take a look at that. Besides that, I still enjoyed the level of detail you put into the video. Please keep that up! After watching your video, I feel more confident about assembly, bed leveling, calibration, etc. I'm looking forward to checking out your other videos. Thank you for putting this video together!

Never owned a 3d printer before. Bought one with a dual extruder like this. It's on the way thru FedEx. Suddenly I'm like I wonder if someone somewhere has done any reviews to show me what I just got myself into. I'm saving this video.

I really appreciate this review - it showed a few things that other reviews didn't cover (such as the enormous retraction number required to cut down on stringing). My impression from all of the reviews is that this is a very solid printer with nowhere to go but up when the community has developed more support for tuning the printer profiles. I'm also strongly leaning towards funding the purchase of one by selling my venerable Artillery Sidewinder X1, as the SV04 and Sidewinder family have comparable sizes, hardware, and other general features, yet the SV04 has a rather nice IDEX setup and comes with the belt tensioners, large SD card, and a flex plate system.
The only negatives I've seen so far are that the flex plate isn't that great and that the printer uses Mk8 hot ends instead of the Volcano as on the Sidewinder. I have a collection of Mk8 nozzles for my Ender 3, so that's not a real problem, but I would be interested in hearing about anyone who found a way to retrofit Volcano hot ends onto an SV04 because I do like how well the Volcano handles printing with larger-diameter nozzles and other high flow rate applications.

@@justinchamberlin4195 that’s what I’m holding out for although I suspect they won’t discount it in Europe. Prime day here is not as big as it should be and it seems an excuse to dump old tech really! Good luck il be ordering mine that for sure. I’ve read a lot of reviews and watched some as well and it just seems to get better all the time. I have a good selection of printers already for general work but I am very keen to get an Idex now as I get a good few orders for raised lettering on a mono background and this fits the bill and beats fusing filament

god i'm so tempted. But this loooks like exactly like the kind of unreliable 3dprinter that'd make you cry in frustration :D
Also, great review! I love how you actually tried to use the printer as a normal person (actually improved the retraction instead of going "If I tuned the setting it'll probably work, but it sucks right now, that's it, that's the review!")
no offense to other creators tho xD it's hard to review something.
btw PVA supports are so fun, try the Hilbert cube with pva if you ever want to :) you can do ABS/PVA if you tune stuff right and you can throw it in 80c hot water to dissolve
PS: the stringing support material can easily get in-between your layers and cause a VERY SEVERE weakpoint in that point. so I really recommend doing something about that if you make mechanical parts. for me i'd have to fix that!
also wish you tested the tolerances! for people like me (mostly practical parts used for mechanical parts etc) tolerances and accuracy matter a lot! maker's muse has a cool castell etc for testing
Nice video.
Some comments:
1. Two ABL-sensors would not help, as the bed has only one mesh anyway. You only measure the bed with the sensor. ABL corrects z-hight to compensate, moving the x-axis a bit up or down - but with two heads you need different z-correction value for each head. Actually a "tiltable x-axis" would be needed, so you can have different z-correction on each head by adjusting z0 and z1 so both heads at their actual position get their individual z-correction. While technical possible I know no firmware actually supporting this (and no hardware with tiltable x...).
2. You can do manual filament changes inside a layer - simply use m600 as custom g-code for toolchange in prusa slicer and edit profile for using multiple "virtual" extruders (practical same setup as using MMU2 but without actually using a MMU and a whipe tower). Works quite well. Of course manual filament change only makes sense if only a few top or buttom layers should change. So not for a full coloured object - but perfect for embedding text and logos to the botom layer. For me thats sufficient most time - I barely use my IDEX, as I use 3 colours if printing multicolour anyways.
3. Best potential use for two printheads: Different nozzle size. 0.4 Nozzle for more detailed parts, 0.8mm for less detailed parts should speed up the total printtime on massive parts a lot. This in combination with an ERCF on each toolhead...
4. More details for the printheads please... Maybe changing heatbreaks to bimetal ones and nozzles to Bondtech CHT might solve the stringing problems.
Can the svo4 be upgraded to print with nylon and the filaments that require high temperatures? And also carbon fibre?
About the stringing, remove the Z-hop option ! You will be free from this issue !
Where do you remove that from? Trying to decide between this printer and the SZ03...

Is it necesary to do a paper leveling test during every callibration? Or just every second time?
I'm having a problem with extruder one gear not rotating correctly when the print head goes beyond +/-230mm on the X axis. It starts to jump as though it is slipping and sounds terrible. I've moved the print head one mm at a time to try and pinpoint exactly when it starts happening, but it changes each time. That makes me wonder if it is a firmware issue? I first noticed it with a print last night. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Since you have two print head you could level both sides at the same time.
Is there a idex belt printer?
I see a potential issue with the gantry on this printer. The vertical rails are just bolted to the lower horizontal rails. With only 2 bolts on each side I see a potential for the gantry not staying square with the base. Probably not a big issue unless you print taller prints where the vibration from the heads could cause the gantry to loosen. This issue could be lessened with some bracing from the top of the gantry to the base.
Ender style printers have that problem and it is definitely true that adding bracing is a good idea. You can print mounts for threaded rods that allow you to make a hypotenuse on each side and get it square. The frame is probably not square out of the box anyway.
I thought the same thing when I saw only two screws on each side. Seems pretty lackluster. Might even go as far as to say it's a design flaw. Adding z braces could potentially fix the problem and there is a good looking one on cults3d.
I’m trying to decide between this at $380 or the a1 mini with ams at $580 the $200 is a big difference to me because It will take multiple more months for it

How would you compate this printer to the MakerPi P3 Pro IDEX 3D Printer?
I like the Sovol SV04 more than the MakerPi P3, when printing with multiple colors, I just print PLA, so I don't need the excessive number of tool heads from the MakerPi. The overall build quality of this SV04 is also better.
How are the Z stepper motors kept in sync?
I'd guess by being stepper motors. Unless you load one so it skips steps, they SHOULD stay in sync.
@@seanroach899 Problem is when the machine is powered down you could accidentally rotate one of the stepper motors and then the x gantry will not be aligned from then forward. Creality solved this problem by connecting the two motors with a timing belt .
Have you needed to reflash the firmware? If so how? Sovol cant do a good job.

See all the scratches on the build plate? It's the nozel digging into it. The calibration on this machine doesn't work.
It clogs so often that its nearly unusable. Taco shaped bed, bad printhead 2 offset adjustment, Weird issue with software, and it just doesn't have a great extruder, gets stuck all the time.
